A Voyage to the South Sea, undertaken by command of His Majesty,

London: for George Nicol,, 1792. for the purpose of conveying the bread-fruit tree to the West Indies, in His Majesty's Ship The Bounty ... including an account of the mutiny on board the said ship, and the subsequent voyage of part of the crew, in the ship's boat... Quarto (271 × 219 mm). Near-contemporary half calf (perhaps Irish), skilfully rebacked with original spine laid down, red morocco label, spine decorated in gilt and in blind in compartments, marbled sides and edges. Stipple-engraved oval portrait frontispiece of Bligh by Conde after Russell, folding plan of the Bounty, folding plan of the Bounty's launch, plate of a breadfruit, and 4 plans and charts (3 folding). Ownership inscription of Charles Henry Tandy, Trinity College Dublin, to flyleaf; bookplate of C. S. Tandy. Rubbed, portrait lightly foxed towards head, one plate with small waterstains, withal a very good copy. First edition of Bligh's own full account of his voyage which led to the most famous mutiny in the history of the sea. In mid-1787 Bligh received the command of the Bounty, then being fitted to transport breadfruit and other plants from the South Seas to the West Indies, part of an elaborate scheme to establish large-scale cotton cultivation in the West Indies by transplanting breadfruit and other fruits and vegetables so that plantation owners might feed slaves more cheaply. The Bounty reached Tahiti, loaded up with breadfruit, and set sail again at the beginning of April 1789. In the early morning of 28 April 1789, when off the island of Tonga, Fletcher Christian led part of the crew in mutiny. The rebels set Bligh and eighteen men adrift in the ship's 23 foot long launch, with little food and only minimal navigational tools. Incredibly Bligh managed to reach Kupang in Timor two months later with the loss of only one man, after a harrowing 3500 mile voyage. Embarrassingly Bligh found himself having to defend his own conduct. He had already published a shorter Narrative of the Mutiny in 1790. The Advertisement explains that "the reason of the Narrative appearing first, was for the purpose of communicating early information concerning an event which attracted the public notice: and being drawn up in a hasty manner, it required many corrections." This is the first appearance of Bligh's account of the entire expedition. It did not achieve his aim of rehabilitating his reputation, which was later further damaged by another mutiny and other serious insubordinations. History's verdict has overwhelmingly been that Bligh was clearly a superior navigator and a brave man, but an abysmal leader otherwise. Interestingly, it was his habit of intemperate verbal abuse that upset his subordinates: research has shown that Bligh actually flogged less than any other British commander in the Pacific Ocean in the later eighteenth century.

Ziegenhagen, a merchant from Hamburg who belonged to a lodge in Regensburg, commissioned this setting of his own text for solo voice and piano from Mozart. The six movements of the "little German cantata" are brief and continuous, mixing arioso and recitative, and passing through a variety of moods. The style both of this work and of K.623 shares the clarity, directness, and euphony of The Magic Flute." Zaslaw and Cowdery: The Compleat Mozart, p. 38. & & The present study is an early and important treatise on utopian socialism, proposing the establishment of self-sufficient agricultural/educational colonies; the fine engravings by Chodowiecki illustrate daily life in these idealized colonies and include classroom and agricultural scenes. & & The text of the cantata relates to the ideals proposed in Ziegenhagen's study.

A Voyage to the South Sea

London,: Printed for George Nicol, 1792.. Quarto, with frontispiece portrait, and seven plans and charts, a very fine copy, clean and large, with almost none of the offsetting normally endemic to this work; modern half crimson morocco, by the Parisian binder Devauchelle, cloth slipcase with morocco edges. First edition of one of the most famous of all voyage books: "extremely important" (Hill). This is the full official narrative of Bligh's voyage in the Bounty and the mutiny. At the time of publication Bligh was on his second breadfruit voyage, and the work was edited for the press by James Burney, with the assistance of Sir Joseph Banks, both of whom had also sailed with Cook. This full account of the voyage includes a slightly altered version of Bligh's own account of the mutiny, which had first been published two years earlier. This extended and revised text makes this the fundamental published account of the Bounty saga, and an important eighteenth-century document of Pacific voyaging, most especially for the second phase of European relations with Tahiti. This is a particularly good copy of this great book, in a most attractive binding. The Bounty mutiny and its ramifications would haunt Bligh always, although his reputation was for ever redeemed by the epic open-boat journey across 4,000 miles of the Pacific. The open-boat voyage, one of the most famous feats of seamanship of all time, was also notable for the coastal discoveries made almost accidentally in the course of the desperate voyage. Bligh's description here is accompanied by his important engraved chart of discoveries made on the coast of present-day Queensland. His achievement in charting large sections of the coast under conditions of terrible hardship partly completed the work of Cook himself on the Australian east coast. Bligh was justifiably proud of his achievements in mapping and charting during his travails, and each of the printed charts features his name prominently: the sketch of Matavai Bay in Tahiti even features his signature in facsimile (particularly notable given Bligh's fury that his work on the charts of Cook's third voyage was not recognised). The advertisement to this work not only notes the publication of the rare partial edition for those who had already purchased the 1790 Narrative separately, it also comments that Bligh had originally intended to issue his account of the first part of the voyage of the Bounty as a separate work. Bligh had, of course, issued the Narrative quickly, noting here that this haste 'was for the purpose of communicating early information concerning an event which had attracted the public notice: and being drawn up in a hasty manner, it required many corrections.'.Ferguson, 125; Hill, 135; Kroepelien, 93; O'Reilly-Reitman, 550; Sabin, 5910; Wantrup, 62a.

[Various places, including Boston. 1792-1829, 1880-1948, 1958-62].. 109 issues. Ninety-three issues bound in eleven volumes, plus fifteen separate issues. Bound volumes in modern three quarter morocco and boards, gilt-lettered spines. Separate issues in original wrappers. One wrapper issue with front wrapper detached and rear lacking, another with both wrappers detached but present. A few issues in bound volumes trimmed and mounted on stiff paper. Others with occasional archival repairs. All with old library marks, bound volumes with library attribution at toe of spine. Overall quite clean. Very good. A massive 109-issue run, beginning with the first issue, of this most durable and popular American almanac. The almanac was often the only reference work found in many American homes, and it provided both essential agricultural information and casual diversion. These issues contain notices regarding the courts of New England, calendars of college vacations, current events, poesy, literary bits, history, and planting, weather, and road conditions. The helpful hints regarding agriculture include articles on cultivation of corn, potatoes, carrots, and fruit trees; manuring; cure of diseases in crops and trees, and more. As times change, the text of the almanac keeps pace, offering insight into the evolution of the American domestic scene. As the almanac gained in popularity, sundry issue points were introduced as the almanac was printed in several different locations. While the vast majority of the present offering were printed in Boston, other places of publication include Brookline, Providence, and Dublin, New Hampshire. The title was formally changed to THE OLD FARMER'S ALMANAC... beginning with the issue for 1848. While many institutions possess runs of equal or greater size, they are uncommon in the market.

Piatti in cartone marmorizzato. Brunet, I,1283. Nissen, Z.B.I., 618. Cox, p. 389: "The result of his travels was a very great enrichment of the knowledge of geography and ethnography". Blackmer, 221. Nissen, 6127. Chadenat, 1062 e 4725. Hallet, Africa to 1875, p. 110: "One of the most splendid narratives in the litterature of African exploration". Cfr. Blackmer Sale, 434: "Bruce stayed in Abyssinia for two years before finally reaching the source of the Blue Nile, and in 1771 he also found its confluence with the White Nile having surmounted numerous difficulties. This work is particularly important for its portrayal of Abyssinia, little-known to his contemporaries, for its literary merits and for the final volume on natural history, in spite of the incredulity with which his account was originally received".

Thomas Martyn is known for the excellent quality of his plates. In order to achieve this he founded the 'Academy for Illustrating and Painting Natural History', a group of talented youngsters. Some of the finest natural history works ever were produced such as 'The Universal Conchologist' probably the most beautifully illustrated work on shells.

Wien, R. Sammer, 1792-1804. 3 volumes, bound in two. Folio (390 x 250mm). pp. (6), vi, 116, (2, separate title 'Abbildung der blätterlosen Zweige'; (2), 104, (2, separate title 'Abbildung der...'); (2), 112, (2, separate title 'Abbildung der...'). With 3 engraved title-vignettes and 300 handcoloured engraved plates of trees (shrubs, flowers etc) and 31 handcoloured engraved unnumbered plates depicting buds. Contemporary calf, gilt ornamented spines in 7 compartments with red and green gilt lettered labels, sides with gilt border fillet (one volume a bit rubbed). The work is complete in 3 volumes and the text gives explanations from plates 1 to 300. A 4th volume was planned but never published. A few copies exist which have a number of plates of this unpublished volume. The present work is very rare and the only bibliographies which mention the book are Nissen, Pritzel and Rehder (The Bradley Bibliography). Nissen copies Pritzel and both are calling for 400 plates, 360 numbered, with additional 40 unnumbered plates illustrating buds. Pritzel bases his description on a copy in the Royal Library in Vienna. This is certainly in error as this copy, now in the Oesterreichische Nationalbibliothek, has only 328 plates and has the same number of text-pages as our copy. Our copy has one more plate on buds in the third volume than other copies. Publication of the work must have been problematic due to the 'Napoleonic pause' in book production. Three of the plates on buds in the third volume are original watercolours and it is most likely that the engraved plates were never made. This beautifully illustrated work devoted to the native, foreign and exotic trees and shrubs is splendidly executed in the tradition of the Austrian Golden Period of botanical book illustration. Franz Johann Schulz was an Austrian botanist and artist. The description of the ornamental trees, of the fruit trees and of the shrubbery are presented first by means of an introduction with nomenclature in Latin, German and French, followed by information on the cultivation and blooming seasons. The images provide scientific information on flowers, leaves and seeds with a double definition in Latin and German. Provenance: Small stamp on verso of title 'Ex Bibl. Mavr. Com. Fries' Nissen BBI, 1815; Pritzel 8463: Rehder, The Bradley Bibliography I, 293, quoting a copy with 327 plates.

An uncommon map, published in the 'Nuovo Atlante Geografico Universale', with a decorative title cartouche, by Giovanni Maria Cassini, a Somasco monk. He was geographer and cartographer but he was also good at engraving architectural items and perspectives ? he was one of the best disciples Giovanni Battista Piranesi had. Moreover, Cassini was one of the last artists to engrave spheres in the XVIII century and his globes were quite famous and widespread, and realized the most important Italian Atlas of the XVIII century; his maps always bear a cartouche, extremely rich in colours and details. Copperplate with fine later hand colour, in very good condition. Roma Rome

[Pamphlet]: The Duties and Powers of Public Officers and Private Persons with, respect to Violations of the Public Peace

[London. 1792]. First. First edition, first issue. Octavo. 5, [1]pp. Unbound. A very good copy of the scarce first issue, without the list of contents on the title verso. An important legal tract setting forth acts, writings, and related conduct that would constitute a Breach of Peace. Attributed to Spencer Perceval, First Lord of the Treasury and British Prime Minister. A professional lawyer, Perceval made his mark soon after the publication of this pamphlet, by holding down the senior posts of Solicitor and Attorney-General, and Chancellor of the Exchequer. He is best known today for being the only British Prime Minister to have been assassinated; thus making his authorship of this pamphlet strangely prophetic. Scarce. OCLC locates only three copies. GOOD. Junius is the pseudonym of the still unidentified author of a series of letters contributed to Henry Sampson Woodfall's Public Advertiser, a popular English newspaper of the day, between January 21, 1769, and January 21, 1772. Junius' aims were to discredit the ministries of the Duke of Grafton and subsequently of Lord North and to draw attention to the political influence of George III, who was trying to establish his own "personal government" by selecting his ministers from a group of subservient friends. Junius used ferocious sarcasm in attacking the public and private lives of Grafton and his associates, the Duke of Bedford, the Earl of Bute, and Lord Mansfield. Finally, in his 35th letter, he attacked King George himself, causing a storm of indignation and prompting the government in 1770 to (unsuccessfully) prosecute Woodfall for seditious libel for having printed the letter. Junius' views were those of a radical Whig and an ardent supporter of William Pitt, Earl of Chatham, who had been succeeded in office by Grafton in 1768. But Junius failed in his aims, for the ineffectual Grafton's fall in 1770 merely signaled the advent of Lord North's ministry. Apart from their significance as a literary controversy and their importance in the history of the freedom of the press, Junius' letters are notable for their style and the unsolved mystery of their authorship. They display little stylistic variety, and their tone hardly ever changes from that of sustained personal invective and of bitter, merciless sarcasm, but the writing has a fine boldness and liveliness, an urgency and blunt eloquence that still arrest the reader. Many attempts to discover Junius' identity have been made, including claims for Sir Philip Francis, the chief candidate; William Petty-Fitzmaurice, 2nd Earl of Shelburne (later 1st Marquess of Lansdowne); and Laughlin Macleane, who was Shelburne's undersecretary. Some 45 other candidates have been proposed less convincingly. Current opinion favors Sir Philip Francis. Ex-Library. 12mo - over 6" - 7" tall

A Voyage to the South Sea, Undertaken by Command of His Majesty for the Purpose of Conveying the Breadfruit Tree to the West Indies in the H.M.S. Bounty, Commanded by Lieut. William Bligh. Including an Account of the Mutiny on Board the Said Ship, and the Subsequent Voyage of Part of the Crew in the Ship's Boat from Tofua, one of the Friendly Island to Timor, a Dutch Settlement in the East Indies.

4°. 10 n.n. - Sehr breitrandiges Exemplar. - First edition. - Bligh's travel descriptions belong to the most well-known discovery and seafaring literature. The Bounty left London and the end of 1787 for sea with the assignment of the British Government to bring the breadfruit tree from Tahiti to the West Indies. The ship landed in Tahiti in October 1788 with a delay of many months, loaded the breadfruit trees, and stayed anchored in port for a few months while awaiting the monsoon to leave. The well-known mutiny conducted by Fletcher Christian happened on the 28th of April 1789 during the continuation of the journey; Bligh was exposed with the other members of the crew on a launch. After more than three months this overloaded boat reached Timor which was 5800 km away. Back in England, Bligh strained to pursuit and denunciate the mutineers. Bligh, whose origins were modest, underestimated the influence of some of the mutineers, which came from the English upper class. The picture of an authoritative, irascible and sadistic captain survived, especially due to film interpretations although Bligh's seafaring and leadership abilities are long ago scientifically proven. The two plans show the loading plan of the breadfruit trees as well as the plan of the launch. With a plate picturing the breadfruit, three maps showing the islands discovered by Bligh and a folded map showing the route followed by Bligh in his launch leading from the Friendship Islands to Timor. - Side of the binding bumped and worn, inner folds strengthened with linen stripes. Portrait and title browned and with water stained margins. Maps browned and stained. - Copy with very large margins. [5 Warenabbildungen bei]

        Politiska antekningar.

Första stycket. Skrifvit på D---a af T- i december år 1792. Med några tilökningar sedermera. Skara, F. J. Leverentz, 1799. 4:o. 56 s. & 3 grav. plr, varav 2 utvikbara.
