        Errotika Biblion. Derniere edition.

Paris, Le Jay, 1792.. (Gay, II, 150 sq. Peignot, 'Livres condamnes', I, 321. Pia, 'Enfer', I, 414. B.N., 'Enfer', 1411).

Astrology: The Wisdom of Solomon in Miniature, being a New Doctrine of Nativities, Reduced to Accuracy and Certainty; or The Art of determining Future Events by the only True Method, The Radical Figure of Birth. A Science by many years intense Study and Labour, brought to a Degree of Perfection hitherto unknown, The Whole Containing The Essence, Beauties, and Substance of all Pieces, Ancient and Modern, conjoined; a Variety of new Matter added; the Jargon of obsolete, and the Errors of Modern Authors expunged; and digested in a Manner so plain, familiar, and easy, that a Person of the meanest Capacity may become Proficient in it. Demonstrating to a Certainty Every Person's future Rise or Fall in the World, And shewing him whether he is subj

      A. Hamilton, London 1792 - Hardcover. Small octavo. viii + 222pp + (2pp of adverts.) Modern quarter leather over marbled boards. Gilt rules to top & bottom and of the spine and black gilt-lettered leather titlelabel. New endpapers. Charts & tables. A curious introductory work on astrology - with a particular focus on Nativities and their interpretation - that was issued to meet the renewed interest in the subject that emerged in England in the late eighteenth century. The author - or his publisher - apparently tried to take advantage of the renown of soldier, Member of Parliament, and author of the famous work "A Defence of Judiciall Astrologie" (1603), Sir Christopher Heydon (1561- 1623), by publishing it under the pseudonym C. Heydon. The ploy evidently worked, and indeed continues to work, as a number of cataloguers attribute the book to Sir Christopher Heydon, apparently oblivious of the fact that all the sample nativities at the rear of the book are of individuals who were born over a century after he died. One other interesting facet of the book is that it makes open reference to homosexuality and paederasty, and suggests that sexual-orientation (in men, anyway) is strongly influenced by the stars: "If Mars and Venus are alone in aspect together, or if Jupiter bears testimony to them, the native will be openly lascivious, indulging himself in all excesses with women; but if one of these stars be occidental, and the other oriental, in Quartile or Opposition, he will then be disposed to both men and women, but not above measure; if both these planets be found occidental, configurated, the native's company should be avoided, for he will burn with unnatural lust after men and boys; if the aspect falls in masculine signs, the inclination is most astonishingly inclined to this very infamous, abominable, and most shocking practice" (p. 182 - 183). Lacks first leaf, which was probably a half-title page. Fresh binding is fine. Interestingly the text block has never been trimmed by a binder, so the margins and page sizes are not uniform at the front or bottom edge. Some chipping to page edges, first half-a-dozen leaves have considerable pale foxing, occasional browning throughout, including some marginal staining. Still a VG copy of a very scarce edition.       1792 - Dedicated By L'Abbe to "Lady Emilia Spencer, Youngest Daughter Of His Grace The Duke Of Marlborough." The rules of the game are on p.vi. Rule I: "The Instructor, while he teaches, must lay aside all magisterial authority, menaces, and reprimands, as incompatible with the very idea of the Game; let him rather become the friend and companion of his pupils, and cheerfully place himself round the table with them." When played, this game with its many lessons would have encouraged intensive learning. "Sold by Mr Elmsley, in the Strand; And Mrs Harlow, in St. James's Street." Dampstaining at beginning of book. Two maps, out of a total of nine are dampstained. Front board detached. Abbe Gaultier, otherwise A.E.Camille, c.1745-1818 was a Piedmontese cartographer who worked in England during the French Revolution, subsequently dying in Paris. Fiedler 246. The genuine account of the proceedings of a general court-martial, on the trial of Serjeant Samuel George Grant.

London: printed for T. and J. Egerton, Whitehall 1792 - [2],130p. 4to. Lacks initial leaf, probably a half title. Piece missing from top inner corner of title page, a long way from the text. Old round stamp of the Birmingham Society on the title page. First and last pages a little dusted otherwise a good copy. Lpro, D in ESTC. Samuel Grant was tried and convicted of persuading two drummers in the Coldstream regiment of Foot to desert the king's service and to enlist into the service of the East India Company. He was sentenced to be reduced to the rank of private soldier and received one thousand lashes on the bare back with a cat-o'nine tails. Grant claimed that he was not a soldier and therefore not liable to military discipline. The latter part of the pamphlet is made up of the prisoners appeal against sentence and the deliberations of the authorities. The summing up by Lord Loughborough is found at the end; he concluded that the prisoner had committed the offence and was susceptible to military discipline. As to the severity of the sentence Loughborough states that it is matter for the king's clemency. Although not in a position to make any recommendation, the form of words adopted suggest that he regarded clemency as appropriate.

An Act for Regulating Processes in the Courts of the United States

1792. [United States]. An Act for Regulating Processes in the Courts of the United States, and Providing Compensations for the Officers of the Said Courts, and for Jurors and Witnesses. [Philadelphia, Printed by Childs and Swaine, 1792]. [4] pp. Folio (13-1/2" x 8-1/2"). Removed, untrimmed edges. Toned, some browning to outer edges of margins, a few small damp spots, "No 15" in fine early hand to foot of p. 1., otherwise very good. * "Perhaps the most pressing judicial issue facing the Second Congress was the need for some more detailed regulation of federal process and procedure. The Process Act of 1789, which had been intended as a stopgap measure, left most of these questions to be settled by reference to the practice of the various states. This temporary solution resulted in inequities. Some of these inequities, such as the inadequacy of state fees for service of process, had been addressed by the Compensation and Circuit Court Act of 1791. But because the 1791 act had not established uniform federal fees for judicial personnel, such as clerks, their compensation still varied widely from state to state. Faced with the expiration of the 1791 act in May 1792, the Senate appointed a committee to draft a bill providing compensation for judicial officers, jurors, and witnesses on November 1, 1791. The committee consisted of John Henry of Maryland, Caleb Strong of Massachusetts, and James Monroe of Virginia. Despite the committee's limited mandate, on January 26, 1792, Henry reported a bill that also touched on judicial process. Its first two sections essentially reenacted the Process Act of 1789, with two changes. Section 1 directed that court seals were to be provided at the expense of the United States (a point not specified in the 1789 act), and section 2 Omitted the direction that fees in the federal courts were to be determined by the fees allowed in the highest courts of the respective states. The remaining section specified, among other things, some of the fees that were to prevail in the federal system" (Marcus and Perry). Two states noted. One, unrecorded, has the statement of deposition on p. [4]: "Deposited Among the Rolls in the Office of the Secretary of State: Secretary of State."

Versuch einer Critik aller Offenbarung (Attempt at a Critique of All Revelation).

Hartungschen Buchhandlung, Königsberg 1792 - TP + [1]-182, Octavo. First Edition, First Issue. (Lauth/Jacob 2a; Baumgartner/Jacobs A1.2?x)First Edition of Fichte's First Book - Popularly Attributed to Kant as His Fourth Critik. With title-vignette by Johann Wilhelm Meil. The first printing of the first edition, without the author's name on the title page and without the introduction. Fichte's first work, which was published anonymously. Fichte was impressed by Kant and strongly influenced by his transcendental philosophy. He went to meet the great philosopher in person but was inititally received very cooly. So he wrote the present work in five short weeks applying Kant's ethical theory of duty to the interpretation of religion and submitted it to Kant as a way of gaining the philosopher's favor. The book met with Kant's approval and he found a publisher for the manuscript. By mistake, Fichte's name and the preface were omitted in the first printing and the book was popularly attributed to Kant. It was thought that this was Kant's fourth Critik, a fact that helped gain Fichte a wide and admiring readership. Subsequently, the work was reviewed favorably in the "Jenaische Literaturzeitung" - the critic claiming that Kant's style was unmistakable. This prompted Kant to publish a statement on July 3, 1792 naming Fichte as the real author, who became instantly famous. Among those who admired the book was Goethe who in 1794 secured Fichte a position teaching philosophy at the University of Jena in Weimar. Contemproary speckled brown pasteboards titled with gilt lettering on a yellow field. The side of the rear board is filled with a contemporary handwritten quote from the Intelligentblatt of 1792 referring to this book. A remarkably well-preserved, tight and clean copy of Fichte's first book. PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. [Attributes: First Edition]

The New York Presidential Electors Endorse the Ratification of "The Presidential Succession Act of 1792," the first comprehensive law establishing a line of succession to the Presidency of the United States, written in part due to George Washington's health crisis the previous year. Many historians refer to this amendment as the most important document guaranteeing the uninterrupted service of American Government. Outstanding and historically important original draft autographed document signed with five words corrected, comprising Sections: 2, 3, 6, 7, and 8 of the original amendment, endorsed by all eleven Presidential Electors from New York State, including signer William Floyd. Legal format with run-on sentences, 4to, 2 pages, 1792, New York. In part: " . . . In the case there shall be no President of the Senate at the seat of Government on the arrival of the person(s) entrusted with the lists of votes of the Electors, then such person(s) shall deliver the lists of the votes in their custody into the office of the Secretary of State.%u201D Signed in full by several prominent Revolutionary War patriots (the majority being Officers) including: William Floyd, a Revolutionary War General, member of the Continental Congress, and signer of the Declaration of Independence; Samuel Osgood, an Aide-de-Camp to General Artemas Ward, hero at Battle of Lexington & Concord, and First Postmaster General of the U.S.; Abraham Ten Eyck, an early protester of the Stamp Act, a member of the Committee of Correspondence, and Albany militia officer; David Van Ness %u2013 a Revolutionary War Officer and Brig. Octavo. Recent sprinkled half calf, marbled boards, red morocco label, low bands, foliate tool to the compartments. Folding plan of the Battle of Seringapatam, more properly Arakere, and 3 folding Orders of Battle. Uncommon, and detailed account drawn from official accounts of Cornwallis and Medows's campaigns against Tipu Sultan down to the Battle of Arakere in May 1791. Tipu's army was routed and retreated into Seringapatam, but the British forces were forced to return to Bangalore by the problems of supply that had dogged the entire campaign. The map referred to on the title page was issued separately, and is "lacking" from all copies listed on OCLC, which locates just a single copy, the India Office Records copy in BL. "The father of Indian geography", Rennell served with both the East India Company's marine and military as surveyor and draughtsman, in the 1780s producing a series of maps, atlases and memoranda which were much reprinted and set the standard for future works.

        Autographed Document Signed

New York 1792 - The New York Presidential Electors Endorse the Ratification of "The Presidential Succession Act of 1792," the first comprehensive law establishing a line of succession to the Presidency of the United States, written in part due to George Washington's health crisis the previous year. In part: " . . . Whereas it is provided by an act of the United States entitled "An act relative to the Election of the President and Vice President of the United States and declaring the officer who shall act as President in case of vacancies in the Offices both of President and Vice President, that the Electors in each State shall make and sign three certificates of all the votes by them given and shall seal up the same certifying on each that a list of the votes of such State - for President & Vice President is contained therein and shall by writing under their hands or under the hands of the majority of them - appoint a person to take charge of and deliver to the President of the Senate at the seat of Government before the first day of January - then next, ensuing one of the said Certificates . . . " In a subsequent section, the document says, "It is therein further provided that if any person appointed to deliver the votes of the Electors to the President of the Senate shall after accepting of his appointment neglect to perform the services required of him by this Act, he shall forfeit the sum of one thousand dollars . . General of the Duchess County militia; Volkert Veeder, a Lt. Colonel during the Revolutionary War taking part in battles in upstate New York; Abraham Yates, a member of the Continental Congress; Samuel Clark, who was listed in Hague%u2019s as being a Minuteman during the Revolutionary War; Jesse Woodhull, a distinguished Colonel during the Revolutionary War who later became a Brig. General; Johannis Bruyn, a Revolutionary War patriot, politiciana and distinguished judge. Also signed by John Bay and Edward Savage. All eleven Presidential Electors cast their votes for George Washington and Gov. George Clinton, no doubt because of the strong influence of the Society of the Cincinnati, to which many Electors had strong associations and allegiances. This remarkable and rare document is boldly signed and is in excellent condition.

Leicht braunfleckig, insgesamt sehr gutes Exemplar!

        LE PARADIS PERDU

Paris: Chez Defer de Maisonneuve, 1792. First Edition with these Plates . Hardcover. Especially Pleasing Wide-Margined Contemporary Copy of a "Very Famous Beautiful" Edition of "Paradise Lost" 346 x 251 mm (13 5/8 x 9 7/8"). Two volumes. First Edition with these Plates. EXCELLENT CONTEMPORARY MARBLED CALF, covers with delicate gilt frame of flower-and-ribbon band flanked by cresting rolls, flat spines gilt in compartments with volute cornerpieces and large and ornate urn centerpiece inside a lozenge of gilt dots, each spine with a red and green morocco label, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt (tops of spines possibly with very expert repairs). 12 FINE STIPPLE-ENGRAVED PLATES PRINTED IN COLOR ON HEAVY TEXTURED PAPER AND FINISHED BY HAND, the plates engraved by various artists after Schall. Original tissue guards. With English text and French translation on facing pages. Cohen-de Ricci 708; Lewine, p. 358; Ray, p. 145; Fuerstenberg, p. 122. Joints and extremities with minor wear, covers with many superficial scratches, but the very attractive original bindings solid, lustrous, and generally well preserved. A few marginal tears of no consequence, one plate with small marginal ink stain, isolated rust spots, mild foxing, minor marginal smudges and other trivial imperfections, but an extremely pleasing copy internally, the leaves clean and fresh, the margins considerably more than ample, and the plates bright and richly colored. Fuerstenberg calls this a "very famous beautiful edition," and Ray says that it is one of the finest examples of color printing done at the end of the 18th century. The plates were produced using the poupée printing technique, also known as dolly printing. This process is described by Béguin as "an intaglio plate coulour printing technique" which "consists in applying some ink on the plate and spreading it out with one's finger tip wrapped up in a strip of cloth. This printing technique . . . allows the printer to put several colours on the same plate contemporaneously." According to the National Gallery of Art, "The method takes its name from the poupée (doll), the small ball-shaped wad of fabric that is used to ink the plate." The plates vary in their emotional intensity, but the illustration of Adam and Eve in their bower of bliss has a pleasing mixture of innocence and sensuality, and the final engraving, depicting the departure from paradise, conveys strong feelings of pathos, danger, and despair. The book's stately pages, high quality paper, and impressive illustrations appropriately reflect the content here, and the excellent condition of the present copy, especially with its spacious margins, is a bonus.

        Opera

London,: Payne and Edwards, 1792-, 1793.. Two volumes, quarto, with a portrait frontispiece; spine of one volume slightly chipped, joints a little split but quite firm, nonetheless a splendid set in contemporary tree calf, flat spines with gilt panelling, red and green morocco labels. Fine and scholarly printing of Horace: 'a very magnificent and valuable edition; the text of which is formed chiefly on that of Gesner' (Moss, Manual of Classical Bibliography).A contemporary evaluation in the Critical Review of 1796 applauds the quality of this edition: 'With regard to the typographical merits of the present work, they must be acknowledged to be great. It is printed on fine wove paper; the type is excellent, and the press-work is extremely clear and neat. The margin is also spacious, and the arrangement such as does the printers much credit.'One of the most beloved Roman poets, Horace is cherished for his elegant poetry and robust satire, combining humorous self-reflection with philosophy: 'His style is rather to tell the truth through laughter, and not only to show others the way but also to work at improving himself and making himself more acceptable to his fellow human beings (Oxford Classical Dictionary).Aside from the quality of its printing and composition, the London Horace of 1792-1793 is noted for its exhaustive commentaries. Accordingly, this 'variorum' edition compares and publishes known textual variations (in collating the known texts of Horace the editor consulted the first printed edition of 1470 alongside seven manuscript copies held in the Harleian Collection).
