Travels through Arabia, and other countries in the East [...]. Translated into English by Robert Heron. With notes by the translator [...].

Edinburgh, printed for R. Morison and son, Perth; G. Mudie, Edinburgh; and T. Vernor, London, 1792.. 2 volumes. 8vo in 4s. With 10 full-page plates and 3 folding maps: of Yemen (605 x 400 mm), the Red Sea (785 x 230 mm) and the Persian Gulf (250 x 310 mm). XX, "454" [= 408], [2]; XII, "439" [= 437] [3 blank] pp. Early 19th-century gold-tooled sheepskin (decorated in a so-called "tree marbled" pattern), Stormont marbled endpapers.. First edition in English of Niebuhr's excellent account of his travels in the Middle East, Egypt, Persia, India and Arabia, the first scientific expedition to this area, subsidised by the Danish king. Of the five scientists, Carsten Niebuhr (1733-1815) was the sole survivor, and his work represents an important contribution to the study of the Middle East. The maps Niebuhr drew in the course of the expedition were remarkably detailed and accurate. Indeed, his map of Yemen was the first exact map of the area ever, remaining the standard for the next 200 years. The volumes include authentic descriptions of life and customs in Yemen, Oman and elsewhere, with detailed descriptions of Mecca and Medina, Sana'a and Mocha as well as several references to coffee and coffeehouses. The first volume was adapted from Niebuhr's Reisebeschreibung nach Arabien (1774) and the second from his Beschreibung von Arabien (1772). Each volume with modern bookplate on pastedown. In good condition with some browning and soiling, and each map with a small tear. The bindings show some light wear, with the spine-label of the first volume slightly damaged, otherwise also in very good condition. English edition of a reliable and influential account of Arabia. - ESTC T51605. Howgego, to 1800, N24. Hünersdorff, p. 1081. Weber II, 550. Cf. Atabey 873-874 (other eds).         Institutiones Juris Naturae et Gentium in Quibus ex Ipsa Hominis...

1792. Wolff Summarizes His Classic Work on International Law Wolff, Christian, Frieherr von [1679-1754]. Institutiones Juris Naturae et Gentium in Quibus ex Ipsa Hominis Natura Continuo Nexu Omnes Obligationes et Jura Omnia Deducuntur. Venice: Apud Josephum Orlandelli, 1792. [xii], 460 pp. Signatures K and L (pp. 145-176) bound in reverse order. Octavo (7-1/4" x 4-1/2"). Contemporary three-quarter calf over marbled boards, lettering piece and gilt fillets to spine, speckled edges. Light rubbing to boards, moderate rubbing to extremities, corners bumped, small chip to head of spine. Moderate toning, occasional faint dampspotting, light foxing to a few leaves, internally clean. An attractive copy. * Later edition. To quote Quincy Wright, "Christian Wolff was perhaps the most influential writer on international law of the eighteenth century. His influence flowed not only from his reputation in other fields - mathematics, philosophy and theology - from the voluminousness of his writings, from the notoriety of his philosophical controversies, but also from the logic, completeness and definiteness of his treatise on international law, first published in 1749, as the ninth volume of his Jus Naturae et Gentium [1740-1749]. A major work on its jurisprudence and basis in the law of nature, it is an important document of Enlightenment-era legal theory and an undisputed classic in its field. As Wolff recognized, it is also a rather daunting work, which prompted him to produce the Institutiones, an introductory guide and summary of his larger work. A well-received work that was soon translated into French and German, it went though several editions. All are rather scarce, however. OCLC locates 1 copy of the 1792 Venice edition in North America (at Yale Law School). Wright, American Journal of International Law 29/3 (July 1935) 552-554. This edition not in the British Museum Catalogue..

        Autograph letter signed.

Rome, 18. XI. 1792. - 4to. 2 pp. on bifolium. To Christoph Martin Wieland in Weimar, who had asked her for illustrations: Kauffmann's only known letter to Wieland, long considered lost. - Duchess Anna Amalia of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach had travelled Italy between 1788 and 1790; she had been Kauffmann's neighbor in Rome. It was through her intermediation that Wieland wrote to Kauffmann on 6 September 1792, asking her for "one or two" drawings for his "Oberon", to be published in his Collected Works. While Maierhofer (A. K., Gesammelte Briefe [Lengwil 2001]) maintained that nothing was known of an answer to this request (cf. p. 432), the present letter shows that the artist was most happy to collaborate on the project. Nothing was to come of all this: although Wieland's publisher Göschen duly suggested two subjects for Kauffmann, the illustrator Johann Heinrich Ramberg threatened to withdraw his efforts if any other artists were employed. - Provenance: collection of Count Victor Wimpffen, Rome, in 1900. In July of that year, Eduard Fischer von Röslerstamm obtained permission for the Graz scholar Bernhard Seuffert to copy the letter; this copy, now in the Wieland-Museum in Biberach, served as the basis for the text published by the critical edition. Perfectly preserved. Wielands Briefwechsel (ed. S. Scheibe), vol. 11, no. 359 ("location unknown").

A Voyage to the South Sea, undertaken by command of His Majesty, for the purpose of conveying the bread-fruit tree to the West Indies, in His Majesty's Ship the Bounty including an account of the mutiny on board the said ship, and the subsequent voyage of part of the crew

London: George Nicol, 1792. First edition. Frontispiece portrait, 7 engraved charts, plates and plans (5 folding). [x], 264 pp. Uncut in original boards, rebacked in calf, loan slip for the Salisbury Reading Society with the names of the members printed and added in manuscript together with inked dates of borrowing from August 10th 1792, some offsetting to plates. First edition. Frontispiece portrait, 7 engraved charts, plates and plans (5 folding). [x], 264 pp. A noteworthy copy of the first edition of the full official narrative of Bligh's voyage in the Bounty, the mutiny, and the subsequent open-boat voyage: one of the most famous stories in the history of the sea. At the time of publication Bligh was on his second breadfruit voyage, and the work was edited for the press by James Burney, with the assistance of Sir Joseph Banks, both of whom had also sailed with Cook. This gives the full account of the voyage, including a slightly altered version of Bligh's account of the mutiny, which had been separately published two years earlier, in some haste as Bligh notes here, "for the purpose of communicating early information concerning an event which had attracted the public notice: and being drawn up in a hasty manner, it required many corrections." The Bounty mutiny and its ramifications would haunt Bligh always, although his reputation was also forever redeemed by the epic open-boat voyage of 4000 miles across the Pacific. One of the most famous of all feats of seamanship, it was also notable for the coastal discoveries made almost accidentally in the course of the desperate voyage. Bligh's description here is accompanied by his important engraved chart of discoveries made on the coast of present-day Queensland. His achievement in charting large sections of the coast under conditions of terrible hardship partly completed the work of Cook himself on the Australian east coast. Bligh was justifiably proud of his achievements in mapping and charting during his travails, and each of the printed charts features his name prominently: the sketch of Matavai Bay in Tahiti even features his signature in facsimile (particularly notable given Bligh's fury that his work on the charts of Cook's third voyage was not recognised). This is a remarkable copy of this great book, in original condition in its papered boards binding from the publisher, with the addition of A remarkable copy of this great book, in original condition in its publisher's papered boards, with a calf leather spine. The printed slip pasted to the front cover lists the names of the ten members of a small reading group in Salisbury, a provincial market town in southern England (two further names are crossed out: deceased or moved away?). A further slip pasted to the lower cover lists another fourteen members of the group. The loans of the book to the individual readers date from August to December in the year of publication with a couple on the following January 1793: the fact that it was quickly read by at least the members with dates noted is testament to the popular interest in Bligh's story. The list of readers would not look out of place in a novel by Jane Austen. Such clear evidence of readership of 18th century books is of great interest.         Eigenh. Brief mit U.

Rom, 18. XI. 1792.. 2 SS. auf gefalt. Doppelblatt. 4to..

First edition. Large folio, 30 x 21 cm, pp [20], 605, [8]. Arricivita is an important source on the history of Texas and Arizona, which were both served by the Franciscan misionary efforts deriving from this "college" at Queretaro. Included is a life of Fr. Antonio Margil who was being considered for beatification at the time of the book's writing. There are also long descriptions of the work of Fathers Francisco Hidalgo and Francisco Garces in the Southwest missions, as well as much on the Sonoran missions. Howes B337 lists is as "a major source on the early southwest." Arricivita takes up where Espinosa's Chronica Apostolica left off, which explains the "Segunda Parte" on the title page, and a later volume by another author picks up where Arricivita left off. It is a rare book: except for this copy, it hasn't appeared at auction since 1994. This copy is from the library of the noted Mexicanist Michael Mathes, with his inconspicuous stamp on verso of title page. Contemporary vellum binding, title in old ink on spine. The first few leaves have been expertly repaired, at the bottom, not affecting text and barely noticeable;otherwise a fresh, clean copy in an excellent binding from the period.

Della Specola Astronomica de' Regi Studi di Palermo. Palermo, Reale Stamperia, 1792-1794[with:] Praecipuarium Stellarum Inerrantium positiones mediae ineunte seculo XIX ex observationibus habitis in Speculo Panormitana ab anno 1792 ad annum 1802

Palermo, Reale Stamperia, 1803 1792-1803 - 2 vols in three, folio (350 x 238 mm), I: 5 parts in 2 vols, pp xxxii 240, with four folding engraved plates; viii 232; II: pp xl [704] [2, blank] 76, with engraved vignette featuring a medallion of Ferdinand III and of the Observatory on title and engraved headpiece of the Ramsden circle; together three volumes, fine, clean copies uniformly bound in fine contemporary mottled calf, gilt fillets on sides, spines gilt with red and green morocco labels, slight loss to head of one spine. £8500First editions of two major works of Piazzi. The first is his account of the Palermo Observatory, which he established, along with a series of observations. It includes his description of the astronomical instruments he had commissioned and assembled, the most famous of which was Ramsden's vertical circle, illustrated in the plates in the first volume. '|Another large theodolite-type instrument was the 5-foot vertical circle which Ramsden made for Piazzi's new observatory at Palermo. Both Ramsden and Piazzi worked at this instrument, twice abandoned before its completion in August, 1789. The horizontal circle gave readings in azimuth read by a micrometer microscope, and the vertical, readings in altitude by two diametrically opposed microscopes. The divisions on the circles were illuminated by an inclined silver mirror fixed to each microscope, and the wires in the telescope eyepiece by transmitting light from a small instrument through the hollow tube-axis - two Ramsden innovations. This instrument, the finest complete circle hitherto made, formed the basis of Piazzi's astronomical work. With it, he catalogued nearly 8000 stars, compiled a valuable table of refractions, and attempted to measure the parallax of several bright stars. The great labour involved in the catalogue is the more remarkable when we consider that each star was observed several times before its position was decided' (King, History of the telescope, pp 166-8, with the circle illustrated).Summoned in 1780 by the viceroy of Sicily to fill the chair of higher mathematics at the Academy of Palermo, Piazzi was encouraged to establish an astronomical observatory, 'and toward the end of the 1780s Piazzi went to England in order to obtain the best possible equipment.'In England, Piazzi met Maskelyne, William Herschel, and Ramsden. The most important result of Piazzi's English visit. was the great five-foot vertical circle, a masterpiece of eighteenth-century technology, that he commissioned from Ramsden. It was installed in the new observatory in the Santa Ninfa tower of the royal palace of Palermo in 1789, and is still preserved there. The Palermo observatory opened in 1790, and Piazzi was appointed its director, a post that he retained for most of the rest of his life.'Having returned to Palermo, Piazzi took up the problem of the precise determination of the astronomical coordinates (direct ascension and declination) of the principal stars. Palermo was then the southernmost European observatory, and the favorable climatic conditions that it provided allowed him to study more stars than had been previously catalogued, with a greater degree of accuracy' (DSB). These observations led him to the discovery, on January 1, 1801, of the planet Ceres. All bibliographies consulted record only the two volumes (five parts) of the Specola Astronomica as above. However, a further sixth part of observations, paginated [iv] 80, was published in 1806. It is exceptionally rare, and OCLC records only the National Library of Scotland. The Praecipuarium Stellarum Inerrantium is Piazzi's masterwork. 'In 1792 Piazzi returned to making precise determinations of the coordinates of the fixed stars. After ten years of intense and fatiguing work, he published, at Palermo, in 1803, a catalog of the medial positions of 6,748 stars, under the title Praecipuarium Stellarum Inerrantium. This catalog was more accurate than any of its predecessors; Zach pronounced it epochal, and the Institut de France awarded it

Wild et Altheer,, Utrecht, 1792 - Due opere in un volume in-4° (cm 27), ritratto inciso dell'autore in antiporta, pp. (2), VIII, 107, 11 tavole incise rip., 168, 11 tavole incise rip., legatura in piena pelle con fregi e titolo in oro al dorso. Cuffia superiore restaurata, lieve gora di umidità all'angolo inferiore interno. A major treatise on the laws of inheritance as well an important work on many levels, so much so, that Medina, in his Biblioteca Hispano-Chilena, devoted over eight pages to it. Rezabal y Ugarte provides the history of the court system in the Viceroyalty of Peru; it relates the court system in Peru to that of Spain; it provides an alphabetical list of all titles of nobility in Peru, along with their origins; and it supplies an inventory of all regulations relating to inheritances. The author was one of the most distinguished judges in both Chile and Peru. He became Honorary Judge of the Real Audiencia, Lima, in 1786, having spent some years following 1777, in Santiago de Chile as a criminal judge. At the time he published this classic compilation, he was the Senior Judge of the Royal Audiencia in Cuzco. He was also the author of "Bibliotheca de los escritores que han sido individuos de los seis Colegios Mayores" (Madrid, 1805). Provenance: Bookplate of Ex Museo del Montino.         A Voyage to the South Sea, undertaken by Command of His Majesty, for the purpose of conveying the Bread-fruit Tree to the West Indies, in His Majesty's Ship the Bounty... including an account of the mutiny on board the said ship

London: Printed for George Nicol, 1792. Quarto, pp. [x], 264, with a frontispiece portrait and seven plans and charts, some offsetting to the plates (as often), the large folding Chart of the N E coast of New Holland particularly fine, large margins, uncut; original papered boards; loan slip for the Salisbury Reading Society with the names of the members printed and added in manuscript together with inked dates of borrowing from August 10th 1792, calf spine, with the bookplate of an early owner; preserved in a modern slipcase. This gives the full account of the voyage, including a slightly altered version of Bligh's account of the mutiny, which had been separately published two years earlier, in some haste as Bligh notes here, 'for the purpose of communicating early information concerning an event which had attracted the public notice: and being drawn up in a hasty manner, it required many corrections.'The Bounty mutiny and its ramifications would haunt Bligh always, although his reputation was also forever redeemed by the epic open-boat voyage of 4000 miles across the Pacific. This is a remarkable copy of this great book, in original condition in its papered boards binding from the publisher, with the addition of a calf leather spine. Reflections on the Revolution in France., and on the Proceedings in Certain Societies in London relative to that Event. In a Letter intended to have been sent to a Gentleman in Paris

Philadelphia: Printed for D. Humphreys, for Young, Dobson, Carey, and Rice, 1792. Second American edition. The first edition was published the first of November 1790. [iv], [5]-256 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Publisher's paper-backed boards, front hinge off, uncut. Signature of John Clapp on title page. Second American edition. The first edition was published the first of November 1790. [iv], [5]-256 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. M. Dupont, Burke's friend, had requested Burke's opinion on the French revolutionary movement, apparently assuming that the response would be encouraging. The "Reflections" carried his response and comments which he intended as a warning for those of the English who were in agreement with the revolutionary policies and especially to the Revolutionary Society and the Constitutional Society. He spent a year writing the work and within a year of its publication it had been through eleven editions. Its reception was mixed, the King liked it, the Whigs, being pro-Revolutionary didn't and the nation generally looked at the Revolution with a more critical eye. As time proved his warnings correct he was credited with being somewhat of a prophet. There were several written responses including Thomas Paine's "Rights of Man." The American people had initially seen the revolution as a similar one to the American Revolution and been encouraging but as the French Revolution progressed and the religious doctrines were changed as well as political dogma, the United States became less and less enamoured with the Revolution.         A Vindication of the Rights of Women:

London: for J. Johnson,, 1792. With Strictures on Political and Moral Subjects. Octavo (204 × 119 mm).. Contemporary speckled calf neatly rebacked, two-line blind tooled border on sides. Leather book label of W. A. Foyle, Beeleigh Abbey, on front pastedown.Without the half-title; joints rubbed and partially split but sound, a little wear to corners, paper flaw to Q6 neatly repaired (just touching catchword), scattered light spotting. First edition of the first great feminist treatise. Mary Wollstonecraft (1759?-1797) argued in her ground-breaking manifesto that the rights of man and of woman were one and the same thing. Her demand for "justice for one-half of the human race" was too revolutionary for her time, but she found a following among radicals and educated women, and succeeded in initiating a new regard for women as an important social force. Wollstonecraft preached that intellect will always govern, and she sought "to persuade women to endeavour to acquire strength, both of mind and body, and to convince them that the soft phrases, susceptibility of heart, delicacy of sentiment, and refinement of taste, are almost synonimous [sic] with epithets of weakness." A second edition was published the same year, but a planned second volume was never written, not least because Wollstonecraft's confidence had been severely shaken by her tumultuous affair with Gilbert Imlay. Five years later she met and married William Godwin and died giving birth to their daughter Mary, future author of Frankenstein.

The gardens at Betz were built by Marie-Catherine Brignolé, princess of Monaco, between 1780 and 1789. They formed an important parc à fabriques, created at least partly by a collaboration of Hubert Robert and the duc d'Harcourt. Cérutti visited the gardens in 1785 and composed this poem while there to recite as an entertainment for his host and fellow guests. It narrates a promenade through the park in the course of which each of its many picturesque fabriques and features is carefully described. It is easily the most detailed and complete contemporary account of this important jardin anglais, which was abandoned during the Revolution and later lost to neglect. Though not originally written for publication, the poem was eventually published shortly before the author's death together with the extensive footnotes on the gardens which more than double the text. The present copy is marked as "Seconde Édition," although its imprint gives a date of January 1792, the same date as the first. Ganay 538. 8vo (19.4 x 12.5 cm); 72 pp. including three pages listing Cerutti's other publications. Recently bound in marbled paper over boards with gilt leather titling piece on spine; recent endpapers; rubber stamp at bottom of final page of ads; some browning to text.

Bauer 1551-54, 1556-59. Engelmann 664-667, 672-675. Heinsius IV 512 nennt nur die Ausgabe Brauschweig, Vieweg, 1799. [Attributes: First Edition]

A correction of abuses in government, no encroachment upon the constitution of the country nobility, although proper, not only superfluous, when purchased to gratify the mere ostentation of individuals, but highly dangerous, as it may be rendered subservient to undue influence. Subordination, when gradually progressive, the solid cement of community; the grand political chain, whose several links depend upon one another, and make civilized society a cheerful co-operation of intellect and industry. Levelling philosophy, contradictory and absurd, when it extends beyond equality of right

London: printed for H.D. Symonds. 1792. 8vo., (6) + 132pp., including the half-title, emphasis marks in pencil and a few annotations, also in pencil, contemporary calf, now neatly rebacked and labelled to match. A very good copy with the contemporary ownership signature on half-title of G. Ricketts and the later armorial bookplate of Edwards Ricketts> on pastedown. Probably the only early edition and certainly very rare. [ESTC & OCLC find copies at only 4 libraries: BL + NLS + Rutgers + Un. of Victoria]. This is a complex essay on government by the army officer, poet and writer Charles James (d. 1821) who had already published poetry, including Petrarch to Laura: a poetical epistle> (1787), a two-volume collection of poems in 1789, dedicated to the Prince of Wales, and a military essay, Hints founded on facts, or, a view of our several military establishments> (1791). The Correction of abuses in government> is an attempt to evaluate the English system of government in a challenging, and often very critical, although certainly not in a revolutionary, way, while the author seems to be sitting firmly in the army officer's stable, traditional position comfortable in the general order of things.
