Travels through North and South Carolina, Georgia, east and west Florida, the Cherokee country, the extensive territories of the Muscogulges or Creek confederacy, and the country of the Chactaws. Containing an account of the soil and natural productions of those regions; together with observations on the manners of the Indians.

Reprinted for J. Johnson, London 1792 - 8vo. xxiv, 520, [12] pp. With frontispiece portrait, folding map and 7 engraved plates (1 folding). Later half morocco and marbled boards with gold tooled spine, raised bands, and black title label; a very clean copy with minor stains only affecting just the edges of the end papers. First London edition. An important volume that combines an account of the author’s travels and his natural history observations of the southeastern United states, this work is noted by Sabin as "unequalled for the vivid picturesqueness of its descriptions of nature, scenery, and productions." Based on five years of study in the Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida, Bartram’s work includes significant commentary on the Cherokee and Creek Indian tribes as well as descriptions of the flora, fauna, and geography of the region. In fact, had it not been for considerable publication delays (not the least of which was due to the American Revolution), Bartram would have been recognized as having discovered a number of species; nevertheless, this work secured his reputation and influenced a wide range of thinkers from the scientific community to writers like Henry David Thoreau. "Beyond its scientific importance, the Travels exerted a profound influence on travel literature and on the Romantic movement: Fagin described the work as ‘the first genuine and artistic interpretation of the American landscape’ (Fagin, 10). Its florid, luxuriant style and vivid imagery caught the attention of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, William Wordsworth, and François-August Chateaubriand, who extracted portions into their notebooks" (ODNB). Stevenson similarly called it "a minor monument of American literature, with vigor of style and excellent pictorial detail." Bartram (1739–1823) was an American botanist and ornithologist, son of the naturalist and explorer John Bartram. As a young man William Bartram worked closely with his father, who had been named Royal Botanist to George III, and accompanied him on several trips to various regions of the eastern United States - excursions that would lay the foundation for his later work. Bartram was an influential figure in the careers of several notable naturalists, including Thomas Nuttall, Thomas Say, and Alexander Wilson.

A New Law Dictionary, Intended for General Use, as Well as For

1792. Irish Issue of Only Edition of Burn's Dictionary with Interesting Pennsylvania Connections Burn, Richard [1709-1785]. Burn, John [1744?-1802], Editor. A New Law Dictionary, Intended for General Use, as Well as For Gentlemen of the Profession, and Continued to the Present Time by John Burn. Dublin: Printed by Brett Smith, 1792. vii, 739 pp. Octavo (8-1/2" x 5-1/2"). Contemporary calf, blind rules to boards, crude early calf rebacking with hand-lettered title. Light rubbing to boards, somewhat heavier rubbing to extremities, corners bumped and somewhat worn, early bookplate to front pastedown, clean tear to front endleaf, a few partial cracks to text block, a signature partially detached, eighteenth-century bookplate of Galbreath Patterson to front pastedown. Light toning to text, occasional foxing, faint dampstaining to upper corners of some leaves at end of text. Later owner signatures H. Woodward, Samuel Laird, and Edward P. Pearson to front endleaf and title page, interior otherwise clean. * Irish issue of only edition, published the same year as the (two-volume) London edition. Intended to be a practical tool, Burn eliminated most of the definitions in Law-French found in earlier dictionaries. (They became obsolete when George II ordered the exclusive use of English in 1733.) This elimination cleared space for other material and longer entries. Indeed, Burn's articles on such subjects as judgment, jury, purchase and will are broader, more detailed and better organized than they are in earlier dictionaries of this kind. It is unclear whether Burn intended to publish this book; it was edited, expanded and published posthumously by his son, John Burn. This copy was owned by four prominent attorneys from counties near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania's capital. Patterson, lived in Dauphin County. Woodward and Laird lived in Lebanon and Dauphin Counties; Pearson in Berks and Lebanon Counties. Sweet & Maxwell, A Legal Bibliography of the British Commonwealth 1:7 (13).

[Pamphlet]: The Duties and Powers of Public Officers and Private Persons with, respect to Violations of the Public Peace

[London. 1792]. First. First edition, first issue. Octavo. 5, [1]pp. Unbound. A very good copy of the scarce first issue, without the list of contents on the title verso. An important legal tract setting forth acts, writings, and related conduct that would constitute a Breach of Peace. Attributed to Spencer Perceval, First Lord of the Treasury and British Prime Minister. A professional lawyer, Perceval made his mark soon after the publication of this pamphlet, by holding down the senior posts of Solicitor and Attorney-General, and Chancellor of the Exchequer. He is best known today for being the only British Prime Minister to have been assassinated; thus making his authorship of this pamphlet strangely prophetic. Scarce. OCLC locates only three copies.         An original Smithsonian artifact and exceptional piece of American history, this steel bolt was part of the original White House, removed during Teddy Roosevelt?s 1902 renovation!

"Steel bolt approximately 17? long and 3? inches wide at its thicket point, with the words ?White House / 1792-1902? etched onto the bolt itself. Washington, DC, circa 1800. Display stand included. Fine Condition. Full color photocopy of the original tag included, on which reads, ?Smithso... / Was...? On the verso it has the list of previous owners, beginning with ?Mrs. Charles Walcott,? and including ?Mrs. Cole Younger,? and ?CJ Younger.?Relics gathered from the Truman administration?s renovation are relatively common and are likely of materials produced far later than this bolt, which was removed during Teddy Roosevelt?s renovations, forty-eight years earlier. This is the only one from Roosevelt?s renovation that we have seen.Charles Walcott (1850-1927) was a famous American paleontologist, who served as the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution from 1907 until his death, twenty years later. A staunch conservationist, Walcott served as an advisor to Teddy Roosevelt during his presidency, and thus developed a relationship which resulted in Roosevelt giving Walcott this piece of the original White House.Construction began on the White House in 1792, directed by the Irish-born architect James Hoban. However, it was burned during the War of 1812, in 1814. Hoban was selected to rebuild the Executive Mansion, and in 1817 James Monroe moved in. During Monroe?s tenure, the South Portico was constructed, and Andrew Jackson added the North Portico in 1829. Although there were many plans and designs to expand or even construct a new White House, none of these were realized until the it was renovated by Theodore Roosevelt in 1902, when this piece was removed, thus setting the age of the piece between one hundred eight-five and two hundred twenty-two years old.Roosevelt?s renovation relocated the president?s offices from the second floor to the new, but temporary, Executive Office Building, which is now known as the West Wing. The world-renowned New York architectural firm, McKim, Meade and White, executed Roosevelt?s renovation. Charles McKim personally oversaw the project, and in an effort to move away from Victorian architecture towards Federal, stripped the Mansion of the majority of its original floors as well as covered the old walls with new plaster. McKim also removed the original grand stair in Cross Hall ?" which in the modern era is the north part of the State Dining Room. To keep up with technology, he added bathrooms on the second floor as well as an elevator and electric lights to replace the ancient gas lamps."

Top edge to page 84-85 and 171-174 in volume II a bit darkened, not affecting text. Some light foxing throughout. Previous owner's signature dated 1861 on front free endpaper. Overall a very good set. Proclus, 410?–485, Neoplatonic philosopher, b. Constantinople. He studied at Alexandria and at Athens, where he was a pupil of the Platonist Syrianus, whom he succeeded as a teacher. "Proclus' distinctively non-empirical approach towards physics and astronomy also influences his philosophy of mathematics, which is set out in the two prologues to his commentary on the first book of Euclid's Elements. The first prologue deals with the mathematical sciences in general, while the second prologue focuses on geometry proper. Proclus argues in great detail that the objects of mathematical sciences cannot be derived from sensible particulars by means of abstraction. Because of the imperfect and deficient character of the sensible objects one cannot derive from them objects that are as perfect and as precise as mathematical objects are. Therefore, mathematical objects reside primarily in intellect and secondarily in souls (as logoi). As universal concepts (cf. 3.2) we can grasp mathematical objects by means of recollection (anamnêsis). Since geometrical objects are not universal, but particulars, and since by definition they possess extension, Proclus argues that their place is human imagination (phantasia). Imagination acts as a mirror and provides the mathematical objects which are projected into it by the soul with intelligible matter. By means of the latter geometrical objects gain extension and particularity. As with physics and astronomy, the ultimate aim of geometry is not the study of these extended, material objects. Rather, geometry serves an anagogical task (just as in Plato's Republic), leading the soul upwards to a study of the true and unextended causes of geometrical objects in the divine mind (In Eucl. 54.14–56.22). It is understood, however, that everything will be sung or played an octave lower). Two stanzas (marked "2" and "3") of a most probably original poem in ink to front pastedown in German cursive (possibly in the hand of Klara Germont): "Nachtigallen im einsamen Hain/Seine süße Stimme zu hören,/würde [illegible] nicht für mich seyn.
