"This classification of the cranial nerves superseded that of Willis. Soemmerrings is notable for his accuracy in anatomical illustration." - - Samuel Thomas von Soemmering (1755-1830), "who began his anatomical studies under Wrisberg, was also an artist, inventor, paleontologist and clinical investigator. His 1778 masterly thesis on the origin and classification of the twelve cranial nerves was based on numerous brain dissections. Soemmerring believed that the cranial nerves originated from the walls of the ventricles or from the cavities themselves, and that the ventricular fluid was the seat of sensation and nerve impulses were motions in the fluid. In addition to numbering the cranial nerves, Soemmerring also described the optic chiasm, the pineal glands and the topography of the cerebral hemispheres. He was followed by his son, Philipp Friedrich Theodor, and later by two grandsons. Meckel studied medicine at Göttingen where he was graduated in 1748. He returned to Berlin, became prosector in anatomy, and was the first to teach obstetrics at the Charite in Paris. He became professor of anatomy, botany, and obstetrics at Berlin in 1751. Meckel devoted much of his time to the study of anatomy and was the first to describe the submandibular ganglion. He also made important studies of the nerve supply of the face and the terminal visceral branches of the veins and lymphatics." Heirs of Hippocrates 601 (1748). - - Lobstein, Joh.         Common Sense; Addressed to the Inhabitants of America, on the following interesting subjects: I. Of the Origin and Design of Government in general, with concise Remarks on the English Constitution. II. Of Monarchy and Hereditary Succession. III. Thoughts on the Present State of American Affairs. IV. Of the Present Ability of America... A New Edition

London: H.D. Symonds, 1792.. 8vo, 36 pp. Portrait frontispiece by Peel of Philadelphia cut slightly close to the top edge without loss of image, some foxing and a few marks throughout. Plain modern grey boards. Paine's first major work, originally published in Philadelphia at the beginning of 1776. Attacking the Monarchy and government by the English, he proposes a Congress of "at least 390 [members]" to choose a President and points out the notional strength of America compared to European powers. "...the independency of America should have been considered as dating its era from... the first musket that was fired against her. This line is a line of consistency; neither drawn by caprice, nor extended by ambition; but produced by a chain of events, of which the colonies were not the authors." Gimbel pp52-3.         DRAMAS for the use of Young Ladies.

[2], 178, [2] pages. Engraved vignette on title. Contemporary half calf over marbled boards, recently re-backed. 12mo. First edition. Title vignette had offset onto free endpaper and title-leaf of first play; corners and edges rubbed and worn; gift inscription on endpaper; later inscription on title: [Los Angeles 1902]; small ink stamp beneath vignette on title and again, at the end of the book; else very good. The book consists of two plays, 'The Fortunate Disappointment' and 'Domestic Woe', written by Miss C Short for a Society of young Ladies. The final leaf is a statement of gratitude to the author's friend, Miss Seward [Anna Seward] for her contribution of the Prologue and Epilogue to the 'Fortunate Disappointment.' 'These little Dramas were written for a Society of Young Ladies, in whose welfare and improvement I am warmly interested; and a they have proved beneficial to this small circle, in promoting the habit of speaking with grace and propriety, I conceived they might be useful to others in similar situations, and therefore determined to present them to the public.'         The Works of The Right Hounourable Edmund Burke

London: Printed for J. Dodsley, Pall Mall 1792, 1792. 6 volumes; Quarto. FIRST COLLECTED EDITION. Three volumes published in 1792, extended to four volumes in 1802 (that volume being published by Rivington). Volumes five (as 'Miscellaneous') and six (also by Rivington) followed in 1812 and 1813. Two further volumes (not collected here) were published up to 1827. A clean, presentable and, importantly, early uniform set, bound in the same full tan calf with twin labels and extra gilt, presumably around 1802; given its protracted publication, sets are often found in mixed bindings or much later uniform leather. Some marginal worming to volume six, else internally clean. Bindings have been neatly rebacked with original spines laid down (some small chips and rubs in places). Generally a tidy and attractive library set of Burke's philosophical and political writings. Todd 79a (1)-(3).

De ovi mammalium et hominis genesi. . . .

With half - title, corrigenda, and 1 full - page hand - coloured engraved plate. Contemporary half calf over marbled boards; a fine copy on bright white paper from the library of Tho. Wainwright, with his armorial book plate. First edition of Baer's famous discovery of the mammalian ovum, a classic in the history of embryology. "The notion that all animals come from eggs was pronounced by Harvey, and de Graaf proclaimed that the follicle named after him was really the mammalian egg. It remained for Baer to plot the course of ovulation and fertilisation from its later stages back to the ovary and there to identify the minute cell which was the ovum. These discoveries were published in the present paper" (PMM). Baer (1792 - 1876) studied in Vienna and later went to Königsberg as professor of anatomy. He finally moved to St. Petersburg, where he was a brilliant success and won many honours. It is interesting to note that this paper went almost unnoticed until Baer met Anders Retzius (1796 - 1860) at a meeting of naturalists and physicians in Berlin, and Retzius asked Baer to demonstrate his discovery.         SUPPLEMENT TO Dunlap's American Daily Advertiser, No. 4191 [caption title, containing] "AUTHENTIC. A CONSTITUTION OR FORM OF GOVERNMENT FOR THE STATE OF KENTUCKY."

[Philadelphia]. July 2, 1792. - [2]pp. Large folio broadsheet. Light toning and minor wear. Very good. Broadsheet newspaper Extra from DUNLAP'S AMERICAN DAILY ADVERTISER containing the final draft of the first Constitution of the State of Kentucky, dated at Danville, Kentucky, April 19, 1792. A constitutional convention was first called at Danville in 1784 to discuss the separation of the western part of Virginia into its own state. Nine further conventions were held, culminating in a vote to statehood in 1792. Kentucky joined the Union on June 1st that year, becoming the fifteenth state. The constitution contains terms and conditions for dealing with the separation of the Kentucky County from the state of Virginia. McMurtrie and Evans both record a Lexington printing of the Constitution for 1792, which only survives in two copies (at Library of Congress and the Historical Society of Pennsylvania). After this impossibly rare printing, this extra is the earliest printed version. This first Constitution was only in effect until 1799, when a new constitution was passed.

1792?. Così la descrive Caproni Guasti / Bertarelli ?L?aeronautica italiana nell?immagine 1487 - 1875?, p. 27 e tav - 50: ?1792, 12 Agosto. Prima ascensione in Spagna, a Madrid. .

        Le Fédéraliste

Paris: Buisson,, 1792. 2 volumes, octavo (195 × 115 mm). Contemporary sheep backed marbled boards, vellum tips. Spines ruled gilt, red morocco labels, worn, sprinkled edges. Library stamps of the Marseille Labour Exchange to endpapers and leaf edges, repeated on vol. 1 page 89 and vol. 2 p, 161. Spine gilding largely eroded, the label to volume 1 missing, spines worn at head. Closed tear to pages 135-136 of volume 2. Occasional spotting and staining, still a good copy. First edition in French, variant issue, of "the most famous and influential American political work" (Howes), and "one of the new nation's most important contributions to the theory of government" (PMM). The collection of 85 essays that came to be known as the Federalist Papers originated in the drive to ratify the Constitution, which was intended to replace the Articles of Confederation and create a more powerful and stable federal government. Ratification occurred on a state-by-state basis, and the essays were conceived by Alexander Hamilton as propaganda in support of the Constitution within New York State. The majority were written by Hamilton, later to become Secretary of the Treasury, and James Madison, "the father of the Constitution" who served as secretary of state under Jefferson and as president between 1809 and 1817. Published under the pseudonym Publius, the first essay in the series appeared on 27 October 1787 in the Independent Journal and continued in that and three other newspapers until 2 April the following year. The first 36 essays were published in book form on 22 March 1788, with the second volume appearing on 28 May, so that essays 78?-85 were published as a book before their appearance in the press. The Federalist Papers have profoundly influenced the interpretation of the Constitution, and have been described by historian Richard B. Morris as an "incomparable exposition of the Constitution, a classic in political science unsurpassed in both breadth and depth by the product of any later American writer" (The Forging of the Union, p. 309). The French translation was the first to appear after the original English language first edition of 1788 and was the first edition to identify the otherwise anonymous authors. Buisson published two versions of this title in 1792, the other one with a lengthy introduction of xxi pages, written by Trudaine de la Sablière. The present copy has that introduction removed, the "Avertissement" leaf being a cancel, reprinted with the verso numbered xxii, beginning the printing of the Constitution. Unusually, in this copy, pages xvii to xxii (leaves b1-3) of Trudaine's introduction have been left in.

He enlisted at 18, and was part of Rochambeau's force which came to the aid of Newport in 1780 and in 1781 was at Yorktown as part of the army under the overall control of General Washington. Nancrede stayed in the newly independent United States for a while before returning to France in 1783. He left the French army and returned to the U.S. in late 1785. By 1787 he was serving as 'master of French' at Harvard - the first language instructor ever appointed at Harvard. His intention for the present work was that it should serve as a teaching aid, and an introduction to the glories of French literature. Evidently encouraged by the experience of authoring / editing this work, Nancrede turned to publishing and bookselling as a career in 1794. he published a catalogue of his bookselling stock in 1796. Ultimately unsuccessful, Nancrede sold up and returned to France in 1803, with his children, but without his American wife. He returned to live in Philadelphia in 1812, eventually becoming part of the social circle surrounding Joseph Bonaparte. Nancrede lived on until 1841, having returned to France permanently in 1825. A total of 237 copies were subscribed for, as recorded in list at the back of the present work: the list includes a number of important names, probably headed by future-President John Q. Adams and 'His Excellency John Hancock'. Unsurprisingly, members of many of the 'Boston Brahmin' families (both male and female) are also included.

Elements of the Philosophy of the Human Mind

London, Strahan etc.; Edinburgh, Constable; London, Murray 1792 - 3 volumes, 4to, 1792, 1814, 1827. 569, 554, 521, 46 p., half-title in vol.III, errata at end of vol.I, small library stamps on titles, a few pages dust-soiled, minor foxing, a good clean set, modern half-calf First edition throughout, and (not surprisingly, in view of the long period over which they were issued) very scarce thus. The volumes are not uniform in size, vol.II, the Edinburgh volume, being markedly smaller (as issued). The first volume was Stewart's first book, and is today the commonest of the three , both in library holdings and in commerce. It is frequently listed as complete, though Stewart himself begins 'In various parts of the following Work, references are made to subsequent speculations, which are not contained in it.' Dugald Stewart may not be one of the great original philosophers, but through his writings and lectures he was principally responsible for making the 'Scottish philosophy' predominant in Europe and America as well as Great Britain during the first half of the nineteenth century. Hunter & Macalpine 640. Heavy book, will need additional postage. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Petri Artedi sueci Genera piscium. In quibus systema totum ichthyologiae proponitur cum classibus, ordinibus, generum characteribus, specierum differentiis, observationibus plurimis. Redactis speciebus 242 ad Genera 52. Ichthyologiae pars. III. Emendata et aucta a Iohanne Iulio Walbaum

Grypeswaldiae: Ant. Ferdin. Roese, 1792. Second edition (first ed., 1738). [iv], 723 pp. 8vo. Quarter calf and boards, spine laid down. Library bookplate, with release. Peter Artedi or Petrus Arctaedius (February 22, 1705 - September 27, 1735) was a Swedish naturalist and is known as the "father of Ichthyology." Artedi was born in the province of Ångermanland. Intending to become a clergyman, he went, in 1724, to study theology at Uppsala University, but he turned his attention to medicine and natural history, especially fishes. In 1728 his countryman Carolus Linnaeus arrived in Uppsala, and a lasting friendship was formed between the two. In 1732 both left Uppsala, Artedi for England, and Linnaeus for Lappland; before parting they reciprocally bequeathed to each other their manuscripts and books in the event of death. Artedi accidentally drowned at Amsterdam, where he was engaged in cataloguing the collections of Albertus Seba, a wealthy Dutchman, who had formed what was perhaps the richest museum of his time. According to agreement, his manuscripts came into the hands of Linnaeus, and his Bibliotheca Ichthyologica and Philosophia Ichthyologica, together with a life of the author, were published at Leiden in 1738. On his grave, an epitaph by George Shaw is engraved: Here lies poor Artedi, in foreign land pyx'd Not a man nor a fish, but something betwixt, Not a man, for his life among fishes he past, Not a fish, for he perished by water at last.

Memoirs of the life of the late Charles Lee, Esq. Lieutenant Colonel of the Forty Fourth Regiment, Colonel in the Portuguese service, Major General, and aide-de-camp to the King of Poland, and second in command in the service of the United States of America during the Revolution: to which are added his political and military essays; also, letters to, and from many distinguished characters, both in Europe and America

Dublin: Printed for Messrs. P. Byrne, J. Moore, W. M'Kenzie, W. Jones, A Grueber, J. Rice and R. M'Alister, 1792. First Dublin edition. xii, 439 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Full blue morocco in period style. Sporadic staining and foxing to text. The Case of Charles Lee When the Revolutionary General Charles Lee (1832-1782) married the daughter of a Seneca chief, he was given the honorary name "Boiling Water," an apt sobriquet for this wild, eccentric, and contradictory man. Born in England, Lee served the King of Poland and the British army before eventually fighting for the American colonists against British rule. According to the DAB, "Early in the war, his military experience and radical Whig republicanism were useful in mobilizing Americans to resist the power of the mighty British Empire. However, as time went on, this same political radicalism, combined with Lee's erratic personality and the growing indications that his military genius was overrated, made him more of a liability than an asset." In fact, evidence eventually emerged in the 19th century which has led some historians to believe that, during his brief captivity by the British in 1776, Lee provided General Howe with information on how to defeat the Continental army, and in doing so, betrayed his country. Lee's erratic behavior, his open show of disrespect to Washington, and above all, his retreat at the Battle of Monmouth in 1778, led to his eventual court-martial and suspension for one year. Lee published his own "Vindication" in 1778, in which he was so abusive to Washington that he was challenged to a duel and wounded by Col. John Laurens. Soured on public service forever, he retired in disgrace to his Virginia farm and died in Philadelphia in 1782. This first Dublin edition of Langworthy's attempt to make sense of Lee was published in the same year as the London editions, and seems to be a paginary reprint. It contains a 70-page memoir of Lee by Edward Langworthy himself, and collects Lee's essays and correspondence with the various great men of his day - - including Hume, John Hancock, and George Washington. Howes attributes the editorship of this work to Thomas Paine, working under the direction of Langworthy. Whatever the case, it remains the first attempt to tell the still controversial story of "one of the most extraordinary and contradictory characters in American history." - DAB.

- II. Deux L.A.S. de l'éditeur Emile Bruylant à M.         Captain John Hunter

      J. Stockdale, London 1792 - Engraving, 280 x 215 mm. (sheet size), a little foxed, gentle tide-mark, good condition overall. Portrait of Captain Hunter seated, in naval uniform and holding papers in his left hand (one of which depicts a ship passing between two headlands). Captain John Hunter (1737 - 1821) was appointed second captain, under Governor Phillip, of the "Sirius", one of the First Fleet to Australia in 1787; and he later became second Governor of New South Wales (1795 - 1800). Upon first arriving at Botany Bay, the proposed site of the settlement, Hunter joined Philip in surveying the area before deciding upon Port Jackson as a preferred option for landing. Later, in an effort to obtain replacement grains for the starving colony at Cape of Good Hope, the Sirius under Hunter's command was lost on the treacherous reefs off Norfolk Island, causing him to be stranded there for eleven months. As Governor he was criticised for his lack of control over the rum trade that had gained a strong foothold amongst the New South Wales Corps. He left the Colony Sept.1800 (see p.155 Nan Kivell Portraits of the Famous and Infamous). This attractive mezzotint was published in September 1792 by John Stockdale, to form the frontispiece for Hunter's Historical Journal of the Transactions at Port Jackson, published the following year.       1792. 1792?". Così la descrive Caproni Guasti / Bertarelli ?"L?'aeronautica italiana nell?'immagine 1487-1875?", p. 27 e tav- 50: ?"1792, 12 Agosto. Prima ascensione in Spagna, a Madrid. .

The second part of the account is given over to the description of the giant triumphal arch designed by the architect and hofbauinspektor Jacob Axel, which is illustrated with a fine large hand coloured plate. The monumental arch, though only constructed of timber and painted cloth survived the visit for quite a while due to popular demand.         Imitations of Original Drawings... Portraits of Illustrious Persons of

1792. HOLBEIN, Hans. Imitations of Original Drawings by Hans Holbein, in the Collection of His Majesty, for the Portraits of Illustrious Persons of the court of Henry VIII. Biographical notices by Edmund Lodge. 2, 1, 69 ff. With 84 colour-printed stipple engravings on 83 leaves of plates executed by F. Bartolozzi (80), C. Metz (3), and C. Knight (1), after designs by Hans Holbein. Folio, 540 x 440 mm, bound in contemporary English tan calf, re-backed, a.e.g. London: W. Bulmer for John Chamberlaine, 1792 [-1800]. |~||~||~||~||~| First Edition. This magnificent work comes as close as one could imagine to replicating Holbein's sublime colour chalk drawings. It is "surely the finest early example of English color printing" (Ray). Eighty-four stipple engravings, of which eighty were executed by Bartolozzi, reproduce all but five of Holbein's drawings in Windsor Castle. In this copy, all but eighteen of the plates are printed on PINK PAPER. The originals, in chalk heightened with pen and metalpoint, were made by the German master during his two sojourns in England (1526-1528, 1532-1543). They constitute preliminary studies for a number of Holbein's most famous oil paintings, including his portrait of Sir Thomas More in the Frick Collection. K.T. Parker has observed that Bartolozzi's prints were the principal means through which the drawings reached a wider public. Abbey's great catalogue, which generally offers little comment, even on works of this magnitude, states: "In every way a splendid book, the colour printing reproducing with extraordinary fidelity the original designs." Some wear to binding extremities. PROVENANCE: H.C.M. Porter with his bookplate. Hardie, pp. 62-3 ("beautiful"). Prideaux, p. 56. Abbey, Life 205. Lowndes I, 405. Ray 19. K.T.
