Valmont-Bomare, M

Burke, Edmund:
London: printed: New York: Re-printed by Hugh Gaine, 1791.. [4],196pp. Octavo. Extracted from bound volume. Some inevitable scattered foxing and tanning, some occasional neat early ink marginalia and commentary, two early ink ownership signatures on title (one crossed through), but a good copy, the fore-edges largely untrimmed. First American edition of Burke's spirited fusillade against the revolutionary fervor across the channel, described by PMM as "one of the most brilliant of all polemics." The second owner was at distinct disagreement with some of the opinions of the first: on page 106, the first owner has written, in part: "This sentence, though too long, is a very fine one...." The second owner has neatly crossed through those comments, and responded simply "fudge." PRINTING AND THE MIND OF MAN 239. TODD 53ff. EVANS 23238. ESTC W36398.

JOHNSTON, William
London, Digested and Published by W. Faden, Geographer to the King, Jan[uar]y 1st, 1791. - Madeira Two engraved charts, on two sheets joined, fine original hand-colour, inset plan of Funchal, first chart with view of Funchal and plan of the road of Funchal. Large and detailed plan of Madeira. The British had particularly strong links with Madeira. The island had been under Portuguese rule since its discovery in 1418 - Portugal being the country with which England had (and still has) its oldest diplomatic alliance - based on the Treaty of Windsor of 1386. This alliance was further strengthened when, in 1662, Charles II married Catherine of Braganza. As a result Englishmen were allowed to settle on the island. Many of the new arrivals would later become involved in the lucrative Madeira port trade. It is likely that William Johnston, the author of the present chart, was involved in the industry, as one William Johnston is recorded as a partner in Newton, Gordon, and Johnston from 1777-1791. The company - now trading as Cossart, Gordon & Co. - was established by Francis Newton in 1745 and is the oldest company in the Madeira wine trade. These strong links were coupled with the island's strategic significance as a principal port of call for the burgeoning transatlantic trade. Attached to the left of the chart is a 'Plan of the Road of Funchal', with detailed soundings, anchorages, and observations made by Thomas Howe in 1762; whose observations were communicated by Alexander Dalrymple to the admiralty. We are aware of only one other recorded example of the charts together joine … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

Vicesimus Knox
London - Rivingtons, Longman, Law et al. 1791. Hardcover. Book, An extensive educational selection of eminent literary authors. With an engraved title page. Vicesimus Knox, 1752-1821, was an English headmaster and writer. Knox's motivation was the education and improvement of a youthful and middling readershipthe man of a liberal profession [and] the mercantile classesotherwise too busy to study classical literature in full (Extracts in Poetry, 1805, vi). As in his own writing, the non-fiction essay and its modern exponents, among them Addison, Johnson, Richard Steele, and Hugh Blair, featured prominently in his selection of prose writers. While not ignoring classical writers, one of Knox's principal aims was to identify and introduce to the canon those elements of modern literature he believed of particular benefit for the commerce of ordinary life. His focus also resulted in a noticeably generous coverage of eighteenth-century women writers -ODNB. Condition: In a full calf binding. Externally, rubbed. With a gilt reference number to the spine. The front joint is cracked and the rear joint starting. Internally, firmly bound, with light browning and the occasional spot or mark, prominent to the first and last few pages. The first eight leaves are only partially attached. With a blank label to the front pastedown. Overall: GOOD ONLY. GOOD ONLY.

Lima. 1791-1794.. Lima. 1791-1794.. 190 issues, plus two duplicate issues; generally 8 to 16pp. in length. Small quarto. Five bound volumes, plus twenty- four loose issues. First thirty-four issues bound in modern red half calf and cloth, the other volumes bound in contemporary vellum. Light foxing; one volume with some slight worming, minutely affecting text. The first issue was published on January 2, 1791, and the paper subsequently ran on a semi-weekly basis for 411 issues, until 1795. A significant portion - almost half - of the periodical's complete run is represented here, beginning with the very first issue. Each volume also contains subscribers lists, meteorological observations, and numerous folding tables. The contents are as follow: 1) First bound volume contains issues for January through April 1791, thirty-four in all, totaling approximately 316pp., plus numerous folding tables. 2) Eight loose issues, covering the entire month of August 1791. 3) The second bound volume contains issues for September through December 1791, thirty- five in all, totaling approximately 311pp., plus folding tables. 4) The third bound volume contains issues for January through April 1792, thirty … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

[Fleurieu, Charles Pierre Claret]:
London: Printed for John Stockdale, 1791.. xxiv,323,[1]pp. plus nine folding maps, two folding views, and a folding plate. Lacks the half title. Quarto. Modern three-quarter speckled calf and marbled boards, spine richly gilt, gilt morocco label. Offsetting from the maps, some slight age toning, but a handsome, very good copy. First English edition, following the French edition of the previous year. Writing during a period of intense international rivalry over discoveries in the Pacific, Fleurieu (a French politician and scientist) promotes the discoveries of Bougainville and Jean de Surville at the expense of British claims, though he does acknowledge some of Captain Cook's discoveries. To bolster his claims for the French, Fleurieu uses unpublished manuscripts, as well as the printed accounts of several Spanish and British navigators. An appendix prints Buache's "Extract from a memoir concerning the existence and situation of Solomon's Islands...." The twelve folding maps and plates relate to New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. "The maps are interesting, since they were based both on actual discoveries and on Fleurieu's theories. When d'Entrecasteaux returned from his fruitless search for La Perouse, he confirmed that Fleurieu's theories appeared to be generally correct" - Hill. HILL 611. BEDDIE 1302. FERGUSON 105.
