Printed for G. G. J. and J. Robinson London: Printed for G. G. J. and J. Robinson, 1791. Third Edition, with additions . Hardcover. 210 x 133 mm (8 1/4 x 5 1/4"). 2 p.l., xiii, [2], 16-*205, [1], 203-342 [i.e., 378] pp. (p. 378 misnumbered "342"). Third Edition, with additions. Excellent contemporary speckled half calf over marbled boards, flat spine pleasingly gilt in compartments with urn and garland centerpiece and floral spray cornerpieces, red morocco label. Front pastedown with armorial bookplate of Sir Henry Paston-Bedingfeld, Bart. ESTC T-58807. Paper on the covers a bit faded as well as chafed and abraded, isolated mild foxing, one page with small marginal stain, but AN ESPECIALLY FINE COPY, the text unusually clean, fresh, and bright, and in a remarkably well-preserved contemporary binding. This is a virtually unused copy, in an inexpensive period binding, of an important rebuttal to Edmond Burke's "Reflections on the Revolution in France." Burke feared revolution within Britain and railed against any support whatsoever for the cause of the French rebels. In the present measured response, Mackintosh, a whig and a member of the Holland House circle, skillfully shows the weakness of Burke's analysis and evidence, at the same time arguing for reforms in Britain that would preclude the need for any rebellion. While a lifelong proponent of democratic reform, Mackintosh was understandably horrified by the excesses of the Reign of Terror and was reconciled to Burke before the latter's death.

        The Life of Samuel Johnson, LL.D. Comprehending an Account of his Studies and Numerous Works, In Chronological Order;

      London: Printed by Henry Baldwin, for Charles Dilly,, 1791. A Series of his Epistolary Correspondence and Conversations with Many Eminent Persons; and Various Original Pieces of His Composition, Never Before Published. The Whole Exhibiting a View of Literature and Literary Men in Great-Britain, for Near Half a Century, During Which He Flourished. In Two Volumes. 2 volumes, quarto (268 × 205 mm). Contemporary tan calf, red and black morocco labels, gilt rules either side of low raised bands. Engraved frontispiece, engraved round-robin, text printed on pale blue stock. Contemporary ownership inscriptions of Charles Kerr of Abbotrule written longitudinally in the inner margin of the first leaf of text in each volume; bookplates of William Binns Cowper. Light rubbing to spines, rear joint just started at head of vol. II, the others intact, a very handsome copy. First edition, first state, of the most famous biography in any language. The immense task of compiling the thousands of notes Boswell had recorded on "the great man's talk, habits and opinions" was begun after Johnson's death in 1784. Made up of trifling incidents as well as the significant events in Johnson's life, the work remains a masterpiece of portraiture. "Homer is not more decidedly the first of heroic poets, Shakespeare is not more decidedly the first of dramatists, Demosthenes is not more decidedly the first of orators, than Boswell is the first of biographers" (Macaulay). Boswell's reputation was further enhanced by the discovery in the early part of the 20th century of the Boswell Papers, which were stored in the Malahide Castle of Ireland for generations. What resulted from this discovery was the revelation of Boswell as an extraordinary personality in his own right; a far more complex, eccentric genius than the mere recorder of Johnson's conversations. This copy has p. 135, vol. 1, in the uncorrected first state, reading "gve". Some copies were corrected in the press to "give", and 1,750 copies in either state were available on publication day, 16 May 1791 (800 were sold in the first two weeks). The volumes have the rather unusual contemporary ownership inscriptions of Charles Kerr of Abbotrule (1767–1821), Writer to the Signet; he was apprenticed to Walter Scott's father; after misadventures he succeeded to his estate in 1791, the year of publication.

      Leipzig und Jena: bei Adam Gottlieb Schneider, 1791. FIRST EDITION . Hardcover. 197 x 127 mm (7 3/4 x 5"). 9 p.l., 358. FIRST EDITION. Attractive contemporary half calf over pink paper boards, raised bands, spine densely gilt in compartments with tulip centerpiece, fleuron sidepieces, and scrolling floral cornerpieces, two tan morocco labels, marbled pastedowns. With hand-colored title page vignette and 11 FINE ENGRAVED FOLDING PLATES, ALL COLORED BY HAND. Insignificant fading to covers, minor foxing confined to short portions of the text, other trivial imperfections, but AN OUTSTANDING COPY, the binding with virtually no wear, the text unusually clean and fresh, and the intriguing colored plates in a remarkable state of preservation. If there had been infomercials in 1800, the Nuremberg polymath Johann Gütle (1747-1827) would have been actively involved in this kind of promotion. Self taught in physics and mathematics, Gütle was an active entrepreneur who fabricated and sold everything from etched glass to cleaning and beautifying products (among them hair restorer and coloring) to lightning rods--including the first one in his home town. He wrote more than two dozen books dealing with, among other things, mechanics, electricity, surveying, and magic. He ran an active distribution center for his books and products, and he was a travelling showman whose efforts to succeed in retailing had a component of entertainment--a significant fraction of his writings dealing with the diverting amusement of magic tricks. Despite evidence that he could justifiably be labeled a huckster, he was also a talented and versatile handworker mentioned by contemporaries as an important artisan and author (the poet Jean Paul, for example, alludes, with pleasure, to the use of his hair dye), and he made serious efforts to contribute to the scientific betterment of daily life. Chief among his accomplishments was the construction of the original Nuremberg lightning rod, which brought him considerable acclaim. At the same time, Gütle was decried in Heilbronn as a fraud for his unsuccessful medical applications of electricity, which had to have been viewed at the time as macabre. The present work contains sections on "Electrical Arts," "Mechanical Arts," and "Colorful Magic," with the plates at the end of the book depicting the various devices and experiments explained in the text (these plates, in addition to being very detailed and attractively colored, are in almost unbelievably fine condition for a work of this sort). All of Gütle's early publication are quite rare, including the present one: OCLC locates only a dozen copies of our book, and ABPC records just one copy at auction since 1975.

His younger brother, also Rafael (1865–1930), was born at the Spanish Embassy in London and became a Roman Catholic cardinal; he served as secretary to the conclave of 1903 that elected Pope Pius X and was nominated for canonization in 1953.

        Alexandros Mavrokordatos. "Alexandros Mavrokordatos.President of the Greek Government

      Philhellenic: London "now in course of A Friedal, 34, Surrey Street, Strand and Sold by the principal Book & Printsellers in Town & Country." . Black & white lithograph portrait of Alexandros Mavrokordatos from the fourth edtion of Friedals "Series of Greek Portraits (4th part)" verso blank. Printed on India paper, mounted. Printed signature in Greek Full length portrait of Mavrocordato, standing in his office; the first time this image was published. Text below in English & French The first time this image was published Alexandros Mavrokordatos ( 1791- 1865, ) He was a member of the Filiki Eteria and was among the Phanariot Greeks who hastened to the Morea on the outbreak of the War of Independence in 1821. He was active in endeavouring to establish a regular government, and in January, 1822 he was elected by the First National Assembly at Epidaurus as the "President of the Executive". He commanded the advance of the Greeks into western Central Greece the same year, and suffered a serious defeat at Peta on July 16, but retrieved this disaster somewhat by his successful resistance to the First Siege of Missolonghi (Nov. 1822 to Jan. 1823). His English sympathies brought him, in the subsequent strife of factions, into opposition to the "Russian" party headed by Demetrius Ypsilanti and Kolokotronis; and though he held the portfolio of foreign affairs for a short while under the presidency of Petrobey (Petros Mavromichalis), he was compelled to withdraw from affairs until February 1825, when he again became a Secretary of State. The landing of Ibrahim Pasha followed, and Mavrocordatos again joined the army, barely escaping capture in the disaster at Sphacteria, on May 9, 1825, by swimming to Navarino. After the fall of Missolonghi (April 22, 1826) he went into retirement, until President John Capodistria made him a member of the committee for the administration of war material, a position he resigned in 1828. After Kapodistria's murder (October 9, 1831) and the resignation of his brother and successor, Augustinos Kapodistrias (April 13, 1832), Mavrocordatos became Minister of Finance. He was Vice-President of the National Assembly at Argos (July, 1832), and was appointed by King Otto as his Minister of Finance, and in 1833 Premier. Spotted particularly to India paper; short tear repaired to lower blank margin. Adam [de] Friedal, there is much confusion about Friedal's origins, He is supposed to be a Danish Phihellene and apparently passed himself off as a Baron. St Clair tells us that Friedal carried a lithographic press on his back whilst in Greece where he seems to have been between 1821-24.. He was at Missolonghi for a while with Lord Byron and married the sister of one of Byron's artificers, John Hodges. Byron wrote a letter introducing Friedal to the notice of the London Greek Commitee. Friedal returned and settled in London and produced his first portrait of Mavrocordato dated September 1824. "The Greeks. Twenty-four Portraits (In Four Parts Of Six Portraits Each,) of the Principal Leaders and Personages Who Have Made Themseves Most Conspicuous in the Greek Revolution.." 1st edition 1824. thereafter there are a number of editions, with differences to the portraits. The portraits in the 1st Edition, probably after Friedal's original drawings are fairly primitive, with each new edition they became more refined. A second edition of the first 2 parts was issued in 1826. Some of these plates are marked 'second edition', others merely have anew date on the plate surface. In most cases a completely new portrait replaces that of the previous ediion; parts 3 & 4 are unchanged. In 1827 two editions appeared with the imprint "London and Paris, 1827", some on India paper. one in which the portraits had no, or a very simple background, the other with full complex backgrounds. A French edition appeared the same year. In 1828-9 Dean & Munday brought out another series of Friedal plates, some but not all marked 'fourth edition', their most distinguishing feature being that they are full length. They re- issued a number of plates in 1830, marked fifth and sixth edition. There exist wrappers for a 'sixth edition 'appearing in 1832. [Navari]. The History of the American Revolution

      London: J. Johnson and J. Stockdale,, 1791. 2 volumes, octavo (204 × 124 mm). Contemporary calf, red morocco lettering- and black morocco numbering-pieces, flat spine, compartments gilt with an urn to the first, floral motifs to the fourth and sixth, and olive branch tool to the fifth, attractive "paraph" tools as corner-pieces to all, as also to the numbering-piece, edges stained yellow. Errata leaf bound in at the rear of each volume. Minor rubbing at the extremities, upper joint of Volume I just started toward the head, tan-burn from the turn-ins to the prelims, foxing to the endpapers and fore-edge, some encroachment to the margins, but overall a very good set. First UK edition, two years after the Philadelphia-published American first, but in fact from American sheets with a cancel title, part of the original title still visible in Volume II of this set. A very pretty set of "almost the first and very probably the most accomplished of the many histories of the American Revolution and making of the Federal Constitution" (O'Brien). The present work and Ramsay's History of the Revolution in South Carolina were the first works to be copyrighted by the authority of the United States government. As no copyright law had yet been enacted, this was done by a special act of Congress on 20 April 1789. Ramsay studied medicine at the College of Pennsylvania, and practised for a year in Maryland before settling in Charleston: "He bore a letter from his preceptor and friend, Dr. Benjamin Rush, who declared that he was 'far superior to any person we ever graduated at our college'" (DAB). He was successful in practice, but his energies were soon absorbed in politics, from 1776 to the end of the War he represented Charleston in the legislature; in 1781 he was returned to the House of Representatives; during most of 1782 and 1785 he was a delegate to the Continental Congress; from 1784-90 he served in the state House of Representatives; and in 1792, 1794 and 1796 he was elected to the state Senate. In his preface he explains that the materials for his history "were collected in the year 1782, 1783, 1785, and 1786; in which years, as a member of Congress, I had access to all the official papers of the United States. Every letter written to Congress by General Washington, from the day he took the command of the American Army till he resigned it, was carefully perused, and it's [sic] contents noted. The same was done with the letters of other general officers, ministers of Congress, and others in public stations." Historiographically, Peter C. Messer considers Ramsay's history to reflect "the combination of anxiety and optimism that defined nationalistic sentiments in the 1780s," while Karen O'Brien identifies it as "almost the first and very probably the most accomplished of the many histories of the American Revolution and making of the Federal Constitution published in the immediate aftermath of those events … the last of the European Enlightenment histories rather than the first of the American historical epics". A very pretty set in an unrestored contemporary binding.

Large 4to, 297 x 222 mms., pp. vi, 259 [260 - 272 Index], 32, 22 folding engraved plates, no half-title, bound in late 19th century half blue hard grain morocco, blue linen boards, spine richly gilt; front joint a little rubbed, but a fine copy. The text includes an appendix, "containing observations concerning foreign prisons and hospitals: collected by Mr. Howard, in his concluding tour. Together with two letters to Mr. Howard, from John Haygarth M.D. edited by John Aikin." Howard published this in 1789, shortly before his death in January, 1790. R. W. England, in "Who Wrote John Howard's Text? The State of Prisons as a Dissenting Exercise" (British Journal of Criminology, 1993), notes that Howard makes no clear mention of writing the work himself, and that Aikin, in his account of Howard, acknowledged the assistance of "an old retired friend," who then passed the text to Richard Price. Quoting from many of Howard's letters and other documents, England argues that Howard was more than just assisted by various Dissenters in the production of his books, but that they were responsible for making them into clear English prose. One might add that the first known lazaretto, a kind of quarantine station for travellers, often none too salubrious, was established in Venice in 1403,
