        Inn Yard on Fire

London: T. Malton, 1791. - "Who'er has travell'd life's dull round,Through all its various paths hath been,Must oft have wondered to have foundHis warmest welcome at an inn!"ROWLANDSON, Thomas. MALTON, James. Inn Yard on Fire. Drawn & Etchd. by T. Rowlandson. Aquatinta by T. Malton. [London, 1791]. A Magnificent hand-colored aquatint (image size 20 1/2 x 15 3/4 inches; 397 x 518 mm.).Etched by Rowlandson, aquatinted by Malton. Matted, framed and glazed.(Frame size: 29 1/2 x 24 3/4 inches; 747 x 630 mm.)."The ardent house-warming prepared for the passengers at the Inn Yard on Fire barely justifies the rapture of the rhymer. From the notice-board we find the Dover, Deal, Margate and Canterbury Coaches are advertised to set out from the caravansary in question. The strangers are rudely disturbed, while the flames are lapping the old building and serpentining their way round the inflammable wooden balconies, as the suddenly awakened inmates take to flight with such solitary articles as come first to hand. The entire population of the building has fled into the coach yard - men and women in various (and amusing) states of dress and undress abound - wild horses - piglets and their mama sow stampede - fire roars from the windows at upper left. A sufferer from gout is being conveyed in a wheel barrow out of the imminent danger of being roasted alive an antiquated husband is holding a ladder for the escape of his pretty wife; the curmudgeon is furious that the personal attractions of his better half should be thus displayed to the less privileged males around, who are assisting her delicate descent. The dangers of the fire are increased by the reckless impulse characteristic of similar casualties, in which blazing objects are hurled out of the window, spreading the flames to places which have hitherto escaped ignition. Mirrors and tablets, sheets and other objects, are sent flying from the upper galleries on to the heads of the scared travellers below " (Joseph Grego, Rowlandson the Caricaturist).         Autograph Letter Signed, one page folio, Windsor, June 29, 1791

      - Ellsworth writes to William Patterson, Governor of New Jersey. In part, "You will have the goodness to excuse my troubling you a moment in behalf of an Ensign Brissel of my vicinity who has served in the Reg't. & has an arrear of pay due to him. He has been once to Philadelphia to receive it & was there informed that it had been paid to a May Heart. Mrs. Heart is now in Connecticut & informs that the money is in the hands of Capt. Beaty at New Brunswick & has drawn an order on him as you will see to pay it. I pray you to let one of your clerks call on Capt. Beaty with the order & if the money is paid upon it to transmit the money to me or keep it till I can draw for it." Written and signed in his large hand "Oliver Ellsworth." Tape repairs across two horizontal margin folds, slight edge tears, Ellsworth's most significant contribution is considered to have been accomplished while serving in the United States Senate, representing Connecticut, by drafting the Judiciary Act of 1789.         Promenades ou Itineraire Des Jardins De Chantilly

1791. MERIGOT, J. Promenades, ou Itinéraire des Jardins de Chantilly, orné d'un plan et de vingt Estampes qui représentent les principales vues, et gravées par Mérigot. [4], 60 pp. Illustrated with 20 full-page aquatints and 1 folding engraved plan of Chantilly. 8vo., 204 x 137 mm, bound in later French half morroco over contemporary boards. Paris: Desenne [et al.], 1791. |~||~||~| First Edition of Merigot's Promenades des Jardins de Chantilly, with twenty aquatints executed en mannier noire. These fine aquatint engravings are of very high quality and illustrate one of the most important projects ever attempted by André Le Nôtre. Berrall writes that: "Chantilly offered Le Nôtre his greatest problem. Because of the shape of the water surrounding the château his formula of a central axis in line with the dwelling and enclosed with trees could not be followed. Instead he designed a huge terrace with an impressive vista at one side of the château and gave it a monumental staircase that led down to the parterre. Because of the close proximity of a river and many natural springs there was no difficulty in obtaining water, which Le Nôtre made the central theme. With the rhythmic repetition of round basins and a channeled river crossing the gardens, the château is mirrored from all angles and seems to float on its surroundings. Woods were planned on either side of the parterre, and cascades, a pavilion, a menagerie, a hunting lodge, and a chapel were built in the park. Chantilly, one of Le Nôtre's earlier achievements, was also one of his finest; he himself always considered it one of his best" (The Garden: An Illustrated History p. 203). Slight soiling here and there, but overall a good copy of a scarce book. Berlin Katalog 3447. Cohen-De Ricci 439. Lewine 213. Rahir 443. De Ganay 130. Hunt 718. Prideaux, pp. 207-8 & 366.

An Historical Disquisition concerning the Knowledge which the Ancients had of India; and the Progress of Trade with that Country prior to the Discovery of the Passage to it by the Cape of Good Hope

London: A. Strathan and T. Cadell, 1791. Quarto, with two large folding maps; expertly rebacked in polished calf with gilt lettered label, original marbled boards retained, an attractive copy. Ancient seafaring contact between India and the West? Carefully researched history of contact between Europe and India, by Scottish parson and historian William Robertson 1721-1793. With both sons deployed in India, and a score of knowledgeable friends including the geographer James Rennell and Robert Orme; Robertson carefully collated all extant sources from the ancient Near East and classical literature through to the sixteenth century. Rennell is famously remembered for his treatise on the geographical knowledge of Herodotus, and is credited as the inspiration for this book.Core sections provide curious insights into navigation and seafaring in the ancient world. Robertson writes 'in order to give an accurate idea of the imperfection both of the theory and practice of navigation among the ancients, and to explain with scientific precision, the manner in which they ascertained the position of places, and calculated their latitude and longitude... my ingenious and respectable colleague, Mr. Playfair, Professor of Mathematics, has supplied.' Playfair also constructed the two maps; the first is based on Ptolemy, while the second is modern (both span the vast distance from Arabia to Sumatra).

        Icones stirpium rariorum descriptionibus illustratae

London: William Bulmer, 1791. Broadsheet. (21 3/4 x 17 1/4 inches). [6], 20pp. 10 hand-coloured engravings by and after Salisbury, being watercolour and gouache over thin etched line. Extra-illustrated with a duplicate of plate nine. Modern half black morocco over green cloth covered boards, spine lettered in gilt An extraordinary rare botanical work of great beauty. Richard Anthony Salisbury, botanist and botanical artist, was born Richard Markham. He was left a legacy by Miss Anna Salisbury to aid his botanical studies, on the condition that he change his name to honor the memory of her late brother. After completing his studies at the University of Edinburgh, he resided at Chapel Allerton, Yorkshire, where he cultivated a large collection of plants. "Salisbury was an enthusiastic and accomplished botanist. He was a Fellow of the Royal and Linnean Societies and one of the Founders of the Horticultural Society of London" (Henrey).Dedicated to Banks, this privately-printed work was originally issued in two parts, each containing five hand coloured plates. According to the author's preface, he was assisted by James Sowerby. The plates are extraordinary, being watercolour and gouache over very thin etched line. That process, coupled with the absence of any text, plate numbers, captions, etc. on the plates, give them the impression of original watercolours. Indeed even the plate marks are barely visible to that end. The plants depicted, most flowering, include several North and South American varieties. The work is quite rare, with no other complete example appearing in the auction records for the last thirty-five years, with no copies in the famed botanical collection of Plesch or De Belder. Of the three copies examined by Stafleu and Cowan, two are incomplete.Johnston 607 (this copy); Nissen BBI 1719 (incorrecty calling for 20 plates); Stafleu-Cowan TL2 10.118; Henrey 1298.

xiv, 374 pp. Small 8vo, cont. green sheep-backed green boards maroquiné, single gilt fillet round sides, flat spine gilt. Geneva: J.E. Didier, 1791. First edition and rather scarce. Bourrit (1735-1815), the son of a watchmaker in Geneva, was one of the first to systematically explore and record the Alps and their geological features. In the years 1784-85 he was the first to attempt the ascent of Mont Blanc (not conquered until 1786). In 1787 he reopened the route over the Col de Géant (11,060 ft.), which had fallen into oblivion. The first part of this book (pp. 1-158) is a description of the city of Geneva, written for refugees from the French Revolution. Each quarter is described, along with the educational institutions, museums, commercial activities, climate, and recreational facilities. Pages 159-88 contain an appendix with lists of hotels and pensions, language teachers, private tutors, printers, furniture makers, money changers, and the leading businessmen. Pages 189-205 provide a bibliography of Genevan authors. The remainder of the book describes, in a series of letters, Bourrit's walking tour to Chamonix. Fine copy, signed by Prince Dietrichstein on the free front endpaper. .
