      1789 - (Berlin, F. Vieweg), 1789. 8:o. (8),344,1-44 pp. Mid 19th-century brown half cloth with sparsely gilt spine and red sprinkled edges. Spine faded. A few stains on pp. 51-52 and a minor tear in the upper margin on p. 185. From the library of Biby manor. Translated from the English by Ludwig Schubart. Jeanne de Valois-Saint-Rémy, "Comtesse de la Motte" (1756-91) was a notorious French adventuress and thief; she was married to Nicholas de la Motte whose family's claim to nobility is dubious. She herself was an impoverished descendant of the Valois royal family through an illegitimate son of King Henry II. She is known for her prominent role in the "Affair of the Diamond Necklace", one of many scandals that led to the French Revolution. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        The natural history and antiquities of Selborne, in the county of Southampton: with engravings, and an appendix

      Printed by T. Bensley: for B. White and Son, at Horace’s Head, Fleet-Street M,DCC,LXXXIX [1789], London - 4to: [2],vi,468 [i.e. 466],[14]pp, with two copper-engraved titles and seven plates (including the folding frontispiece) from drawings by Samuel Hieronymus Grimm, plus index and list of errata. Advertisement signed and dated: Gil. White. January 1st, 1788. Signature Ppp2 misnumbered Pp2; page 292 misnumbered 262; pp. 441-2 lacking in numbering only—text is continuous. Bound by Bayntun in full red levant morocco, spine gilt in six compartments (central ornament in four, lettering in two), boards framed in gilt filet with dominant gilt diamond centerpiece, elaborate gilt turn-ins, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers, two red silk page markera laid in. A Fine wide-margined example, vritually pristine (folding frontispiece lightly soiled, typical cross-toning from engravings). Provenance: Philadelphia bibliophile Herman Blum, with his gilt stamp, dated 10/30/51, on front fly leaf. Martin 90. Rothschild 2550. Grolier English 62. First Edition. "Selborne" is comprised of three epistolary sequences—the letters addressed to Thomas Pennant (who, when White met him, was preparing the second edition of his British Zoology) and Daines Barrington (who had devised the design for a naturalist's annual notebook that White adopted for his own recorded-keeping) form the natural history portion, while the remainder, unaddressed, make up the account of parish antiquities. "In contrast to White's [earlier] observations of the natural world . . . Selborne is a literary work . . . [His] attention ran counter to the spirit of leading contemporaries, many of whom sought the generalization of knowledge . . . [Yet it] was precisely White's resistance to generalization, together with his unending flow of rich particularity, that enabled him to fulfill his main aim, that of encouraging his readers to give ‘a more ready attention’ to the flora and fauna of their daily world. . . . [A]lthough he has had many imitators . . . nobody has managed to rival the grace and ease of White's writing, [which] has delighted readers for more than two centuries, and unites the cabinet (of specimens), the laboratory, and the study, not only with the open field and the leafy canopy of a wooded valley but also with the bare roof ledge outside the window, where pigeons coo, sparrows squabble, or the local robin taps for food." (ODNB). "Our chief interest in the volume, as a piece of bookmaking, centers in the illustrations, engraved by Peter Mazell and Daniel Lerpiniere. These comprise a vignette on the title-page to The Natural History, with a line from White's own poem, 'The Invitation to the Selborne"; seven plates, one, the large folding frontispiece, which is said to contain portrait of four of White's friends; and a vignette on the title-page of The Antiquities.         Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne in the County of Southampton: With Engravings, and an Appendix

      London Printed by T. Bensley for B. White and Son 1789 - With Engraved Plates [WHITE, Gilbert]. The Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne. in the County of Southampton: With Engravings, and an Appendix London: Printed by T. Bensley for B. White and Son, 1789. First edition. Quarto. v, [1, blank], 468 (i.e., 466), [12, index], [1, errata], [1, blank] pp. Folding engraved frontispiece, two engraved title vignettes, and six engraved plates (one folding). Engravings by Peter Mazell and Daniel Lerpinire after drawing by Samuel Grimm. Bound by Riviere & Son in full olive morocco. Boards ruled in gilt. Spine decoratively stamped and lettered in gilt. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. A very good copy. "That White’s Selborne is the only work on natural history which has retained the rank of an English classic is admitted by general acclamation, as well as by competent critics, and numerous have been the attempts to discover the secret of its ever-growing reputation. Scarcely two of them agree, and no explanation whatever offered of the charm which invests it can be accepted as in itself satisfactory. If we grant what is partially true, that it was the first book of its kind to appear in this country, and therefore had no rivals to encounter before its reputation was established, we find that alone insufficient to account for the way in which it is still welcomed by thousands of readers, to many of whom—and this especially applies to its American admirers—scarcely a plant or an animal mentioned in it is familiar, or even known but by name" (D.N.B.).         Oliver Cromwell dissolving the Long Parliament

      1789 - Incisione di mm 489 x 624 alla battuta. Buoni margini. Carta inglese vergata molto spessa. Da un famoso quadro di Benjamin West (Springfield, Pennsylvania, 10 ottobre 1738 – Londra, 11 marzo 1820). Originario della Pennsylvania, si formò in patria come ritrattista: si trasferì poi in Italia, dove si specializzò nella realizzazione di dipinti a soggetto storico. Nel 1763 si stabilì in Gran Bretagna, dove ottenne un grande successo e numerosi incarichi ufficiali: nel 1772 succedette a Joshua Reynolds come presidente della Royal Academy. Notevole fu anche la sua influenza nello sviluppo della pittura negli Stati Uniti: presso il suo studio di Londra si formarono, infatti, numerosi artisti americani. La collaborazione con John Hall (Colchester, Essex, 21 Dec 1739; Londra, 7 April 1797) fu fortemente voluta dall'editore John Boydell, che ne aveva fatto l'incisore di punta della sua calcografia. Effettivamente le cinque lastre che riprodusse da dipinti di West furono grandemente apprezzate dal mondo culturale inglese, tanto che presto Hall venne fatto da Giorgio III incisore di corte.

        JOURNAL OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE UNITED STATES.

      New York: Printed by Francis Childs and John Swaine, [1789]. - 164,clxv-clxxvii pp. Folio. Contemporary half calf and marbled boards. Extremities worn. Contemporary ownership inscription on titlepage. Some light dampstaining along foredge. Very good, in original condition. In a blue half morocco and cloth box, spine gilt. The original collected printing of the Journal for the very first session of the House of Representatives. The first session covers the activities of the House from March 4 to Sept. 29, 1789, a period in which many important legislative events took place. Foremost among these was the discussion of the proposed Bill of Rights. Pages 102-105 contain some fine tuning of the language of some of the seventeen amendments originally proposed by the House (a preliminary version of the Bill of Rights is printed on pages 107-108), adoption of which was later defeated by the Senate. Numerous references to individual parts of the Bill of Rights are made throughout the first volume as well. The remainder of the Journal for the first session contains much of the important legislative foundation for the machinery of government, establishing the Treasury and War departments, regulating the Customs, Judiciary, Post Office, Mint, and the like. An important and valuable volume in the history of American government, recording all manner of legislative activities from the earliest days of the federal government. This copy bears the ownership inscription of Jeremiah Van Rensselaer (1738-1810), who served as a representative for New York during the First Congress. Van Rensselaer was a graduate of the College of New Jersey (later Princeton), who settled in his hometown of Albany. He was active in local politics and was an early supporter of the American cause against Britain. He served as a paymaster during the Revolution and was an Anti-Federalist after the war, opposing the new constitution. After serving in the First Congress, he went on to direct the Bank of Albany and serve as lieutenant governor under George Clinton. EVANS 22208. NAIP w027498.

      S.l. [Paris], s.d., (1789), - 23 livraisons en un vol. in-8, pagination multiple, basane fauve marbrée, dos lisse cloisonné et fleuronné, encadrement de triple filet doré sur les plats, simple filet doré sur les coupes, tranches dorées (reliure de l'époque). Coupes et coins frottés, petit travail de ver au mors supérieur mais bon exemplaire. Edition originale rare. Première série seule de ce périodique né de la collaboration de Sabatier de Castres et de Rivarol, mais dans lequel la plume de Rivarol est prépondérante : il sortit d'abord en juillet-août 1789 (notre série), puis en décembre de la même année (24 numéros, débordant sur janvier 1790) ; enfin, une dernière fois en mai-juin 1790 (seulement 8 numéros). Le mauvais vouloir des libraires à assurer la distribution de cette feuille non patriotique explique cette histoire chaotique, en fait très mal connue, qui conduisit les auteurs à espacer les abonnements, et à imprimer à Bruxelles plutôt que Versailles ou Paris, où avait pourtant débuté le journal. Chaque livraison fait environ 8 pages. Dans notre exemplaire, le numéro 18 se trouve par erreur relié après le 19. De surcroît, l'on a inséré, entre les numéros 8 et 9, la pièce : Lettre sur la capture de l'abbé Maury, à Péronne. S.l.n.d. [1789], 11 pp. Martin & Walter, Journaux, 859. Hatin, pp. 136-137. Their voyages were important for the supplementary detail to be added to the geographical explorations of Cook.

        A Voyage Round the World;

      London: published by Geo. Goulding,, 1789. But more particularly to the North-West Coast of America: performed in 1785, 1786, 1787, and 1788, in the King George and Queen Charlotte, Captains Portlock and Dixon. Quarto (279 × 210 mm). Contemporary tree calf, smooth spine with red morocco label, gilt bands. 17 plates (of which 3 are folding) and 5 folding maps. Engraved bookplate of Joseph Grote; early bookseller's ticket of J. B. Smith, Old Compton St. Skilful restoration to joints and spine-ends, some occasional foxing, stamp skilfully removed from title. First edition of a voyage of which two distinct accounts were published, those of the two Captains Portlock and Dixon. The bulk of Dixon's text was actually written by the supercargo of the Queen Charlotte, William Beresford; Dixon added the introduction, two significant appendices and the valuable maps. The voyage was rich in geographical results, though primarily intended to advance the fur trade, in which object it was fully successful. Dixon had served on James Cook's last voyage in 1776. He wrote to Sir Joseph Banks in August 1784, urging the overland exploration of Canada from Quebec to the north-west coast of North America, and a year later set sail in command of the Queen Charlotte in company with the King George, whose captain, Nathaniel Portlock, had been his shipmate in the Resolution and was now the commander of the expedition. They doubled Cape Horn and touched at the Sandwich (Hawaiian) Islands, reaching north-west America, near the mouth of Cook Inlet, on 18 July 1786. They remained there for several weeks, but bad weather prevented them entering King George's Sound (Nootka Sound), and they returned to winter at the Sandwich Islands. They reached the north-west coast of North America again in April 1787 and explored independently of each other, before sailing home via Macao. "Dixon was employed as far south as Nootka Sound (in mid-August), purchasing sea otter pelts from the Haida, taking eager note of Native American manners and customs, as well as of the trade facilities, and making a careful survey of the several points which came within his reach. James Cook had already denoted the general outline of the coast but the detail was still wanting, much of which Dixon now provided. Of these additions the most important was the large archipelago that he named Queen Charlotte Islands and later described as having surpassed 'our most sanguine expectations, and afforded a greater quantity of furs than perhaps any place hitherto known'" (ODNB). "Dixon's voyage is important as a supplement to Captain Cook and for its contributions to the natural history of the Pacific Northwest" (Hill).

        An Abridgement of Portlock and Dixon's Voyage Round the World

      London: Printed for John Stockdale - and George Goulding, 1789 - A contemporary abridged edition of the principal account of the first commercial voyage to the Northwest Coast and the first English voyage to visit Hawaii after that of Captain James Cook. Contains a large map bound in the front. Front free endpaper is detached, foxing throughout. A very rare abridgement of the classic book. In September 1785 Portlock and Dixon sailed from England. Portlock was in command of the larger vessel, the 320 ton (BOM) King George, with a crew of 59. Dixon's was in command of the 200 ton (BOM) Queen Charlotte, with a crew of 33. Dixon and Portlock sailed together for most of their three year voyage. They crossed the Atlantic Ocean, reaching the Falkland Islands in January 1786, and transited Cape Horn to enter the Pacific Ocean. They reached the Hawaiian islands on 24 May and anchored in Kealakekua Bay (where Cook had been killed in 1779), but did not go ashore. They took on fresh food at other Hawaiian islands and proceeded on to what is now Alaska. After two years of plying the waters, Portlock and Dixon departed North America, reaching Macao in November 1788. On their return Portlock and Dixon published an account of the voyage, based in part on letters written by William Beresford, the trader on the expedition. Housed in a custom-made collector's slipcase. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        A General History of Music

      London - Payne and Son 1789 - A set of Burney's influential history of music. Spanning from the music of ancient Greece, Rome and Egypt, through to the operas of the late eighteenth century. The second edition. In 1776 appeared the first volume (in quarto) of his long-projected History of Music. In 1782 Burney published his second volume; and in 1789 the third and fourth. The fourth volume covers the birth and development of opera and the musical scene in England in Burney's time. Burney's first tour was translated into German by Ebeling, and printed at Hamburg in 1772; and his second tour, translated into German by Bode, was published at Hamburg in 1773. A Dutch translation of his second tour, with notes by J. W. Lustig, organist at Groningen, was published there in 1786. The Dissertation on the Music of the Ancients, in the first volume of Burney's History, was translated into German by Johann Joachim Eschenburg, and printed at Leipzig, 1781. Burney derived much aid from the first two volumes of Padre Martini's very learned Storia della Musica (Bologna, 17571770). Burneys General History of Music established him as the foremost writer on music in the country and contributed greatly to burgeoning interest in ancient music. Yet his was not an antiquarians history but a readable account catering to amateurs as well as professionals. What most interested Burneyand his subscriberswas contemporary music; he was an enthusiastic champion of Haydn and devoted a long chapter to Italian opera in England. Burney also wrote sympathetically on the music of the Renaissance; nevertheless, it is principally for its insight into fashionable musical taste in 18th-century London that Burneys History is indispensable. (Encyclopaedia Britannica). Including many pages of musical notation. Witheleven plates, many of which are folding (collated complete). Complete in four volumes. Condition: Rebound in half-morocco with marbled boards. Externally generally smart, although a little rubbed. Internally, firmly bound. Bookplate of Altenburg Reference Library to front pastedowns. Ink signatures to title pages. Institutional ink stamps throughout. Pages are quite bright, with just the odd spot. Overall: VERY GOOD. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        The Antiquities of Scotland

      S. Hooper, London 1789 - Two-volumes (1789 & 1791). First Edition. The front pastedown of each volume bears the bookplate of Thomas Munro, with the clan motto "Dread God". Thomas Munro (1761-1827) was a Scotsman of some prominence being 1st Baronet of Linderits, a Governor of Madras, and serving as an Army officer and statesman for the East India Company. Both volumes in full brown leather bindings with decorated page-edges and marbled endpapers. Boards are bumped and worn at corner tips. Vol. I shows some separation starting at the lower third of the front joint and the rear joint of vol. II is similarly affected, though to a lesser degree. Internal hinges however are sound. There's the expected foxing to endpages, along with some mild and minor sporadic foxing to contents. No tissue guards present, resulting in some faint offsetting from the numerous engravings. Colour fold-out map in vol. I has a single small hole on the border and a short (approx. one-half-inch) tear at the center fold on the right edge. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Tratado general y matemático de reloxería, que comprende el módo de hacer reloxes de todas clases, y el de saberlos componer y arreglar por difíciles que séan ?.

      Madrid, Imprenta Real, 1789. - (3 ll.), xiv, 408 [i.e. 406] pp., 22 folding engraved plates. The pagination skips from 113 [leaf P1 recto] to 116 [leaf P1 verso]. There is no loss of text. Small folio (26.3 x 18.5 cm.), recent full antique crimson morocco, spine richly gilt with raised bands in six compartments, dark green morocco lettering piece, gilt letter, wide gilt border on covers, inner dentelles gilt, marbled endleaves, text-block edges rouged. Half-title has some soiling and spotting; minor soiling in margins of title-page; rubric in outer margin of each recto; light dampstains on final 5 plates and blank verso of last plate. Still, in fine condition. Two different early signatures in blank margins of plates 21 and 22. Contemporary ink rubric in outer blank margin of each leaf recto, with the exception of the half title and title page, as well as in the outer blank margin recto of each plate. ---- FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE of this early Spanish contribution to clock-making literature. A second issue with a new title page appeared in 1791, and there is a facsimile reprint, Valencia 1986. The plates, engraved by José Giraldo y García after designs by Zerelta, depict clocks, plans for their construction, and their machinery. "The book is original work and shows several novel constructions, including a two-wheel clock ? The drawings are beautifully executed" (Baillie). Relatively few original works by Spaniards devoted wholly to clock-making had been published in Spain before this time; this appears to be the most heavily illustrated, and therefore probably the most useful. The earliest work in Basanta Campos that deals with mechanical clocks seems to be Manuel del Rio's @Arte de reloxes, 1759, with 13 plates, which Baillie describes as "very comprehensive in subject matter, but quite inadequate in detail." Penna's @Compendio util, 1760, was apparently not illustrated, and Pedro Marechal's @L'arte de conservar y arreglar los reloxes, 1767, was an unacknowledged translation of Berthoud, with all the plates omitted.Zerella y Ycoaga describes how to make all sorts of watches, including pocket watches, clocks for the home and carriage, clocks to use at night and calendar clocks with pendulums. He gives details of their working parts and instructions for common repairs. The plates corresponding to this section show the gears and how they fit together, and various clock faces (showing seconds, minutes, hours, months, phases of the moon, etc.). The second section of the work (beginning on p. 191) contains the mathematical, geometrical, geographical and mechanical theory necessary for clock-makers. At the end (pp. 386-93) is a brief chapter on constructing music boxes, illustrated by the final plate. The @Tratado appeared again, essentially unchanged, at Madrid, 1791.Zerella y Ycoaga, clockmaker to Ferdinand VI, studied at Geneva and came to Spain hoping to establish an Escuela de Relojeria and a factory that would compete with those of France and England. Chapter XXIX of the first part was obviously written with that in mind: "Modo de hacer un relox de bolsillo y de sala, mejor que en Francia ni en Inglaterra ? "---- Palau 380316: calling for only 2 leaves at the front. Baillie, @Clocks & Watches p. 333: not mentioning the 3 unnumbered leaves at the front. Basanta Campos, @Bibliografia relojera española p. 62: not mentioning xiv pp. preceding the main text; reproducing the title-page on p. 61. Cf.
