Cedula de S. M. para el Establecimiento de la Real Compañia Maritima de 19 de Setiembre de 1789

de Orden Superior, Madrid 1789 - Bound to style in vellum, manuscript lettering to spine The printed version of the Spanish Royal decree establishing the Real Compañía Marítima (Royal Maritime Company) This fascinating work is beautifully printed, and includes a carefully engraved and coloured image of the flag that was granted to the Real Compañía Maritima. The text includes detailed instructions for what was to prove to be a hort-lived venture. The intention was that the Compañía Maritima should spear-head a revival of the Spanish fishing and whaling industries, which had foundered by the late 18th century. The Compañía Marítima was initially well-funded with its financial backers including the Spanish King himself, but was not a success and was dissolved early in the nineteenth century. [i-ii], 1-44pp. letterpress title with large wood-cut vignette of the Spanish Royal arms, text in Spanish, signed at the end with the paraph of Antonio Valdés, minister of the Spanish Navy. 1 small format (5 1/2 x 7 1/4 inches) hand-coloured engraving of the Real Compañia Maritima flag. Mechanischer verbesserter Wind-Regen-und Trockenheitsbeobachter

Freyburg & Annaberg, 1789. First Edition. Contemp. marbled wrappers. A very good copy; small, inoffensive 19th cent. lib. stamp on the title. 8vo., There are 4 numbered plates on two sheets illus. the devices. This pamphlet is a description of an elaborate an innovative automatic recording device for rain, wind direction and humidity. Each of the measurement systems devised by Herrmann were clock driven and appear to be the refinement of a similar system designed by Leupold in 1726. Herrmann's genius, however, is revealed in his design for the wind recorder. This device consisted of a wheel with 12 sector shaped compartments. Once and hour a clock driven hammer ejected a numbered cube from a magazine into the appropriate sector. After a fixed time cycle the observer would have a clear record of changing wind conditions. Kokesai kyuho (Emergency remedies for the benefit of the people).

[n.p.], 1789-90., Kyoto: - 3 vols. Approximately 300 double pages, including nearly 150 woodblock illustrations. Original wrappers with printed labels; interior with minor browning and occasional wormholes, otherwise a fine and complete copy preserved in a folding box. Probably one of the earliest illustrated accounts of Japanese medicine, compiled by the famous court physician Tamba Gentoku, also known as Taki Angen. The work is intended to promulgate medical knowledge among the common people, describing how to remedy maladies of various kinds without the aide of a physician. The illustrations, many botanical in nature, cover every phase of emergency treatment, including revival of the drowned or intoxicated by artificial respiration and treatment by massage (see illustrations in Castiglioni in his History of Medicine). Of particular interest is an illustration of the most famous of all moxa spots ("sanri"), located on the antero-lateral aspect of the (left) leg, with detailed directions on how to "know" it. Among the many aspects of emergency medicine, the author treats the following: Vol. I. Loss of consciousness, including apoplexy, sexual intercourse, paralysis, sunstroke, cholera, epilepsy, intoxication, etc.; Vol. II Vomiting blood, blood in urine, jaundice, deafness, obstructed urethra, lockjaw, wounds, cuts, contususions, eye injury, scalds and burns, frostbite, etc.; Vol. III. Death and violent death, suffocation, starvation, hanging, drowning, freezing and lightning, foreign objects in parts of the body, accidental poising, plants, grains, alcohol and ptomaine, prenatal emergencies, fetal movement, hemorhage, eclampsia, difficult births, postnatal emergencies, septicemia and menorrhagia, infantgile emergencies, stillbirth, convultions, roseola, infamtum, etc.

A Voyage Round The World; But More Particularly To The North-West Coast Of America: Performed In 1785, 1786, 1787, And 1788, In The King George And Queen Charlotte, Captains Portlock And Dixon…

London: Printed For John Stockdale & George Goulding, 1789., 1789. 4to. pp. xii, 384, xl. 1 large folding engraved general chart, 5 other folding engraved charts & plans, engraved frontis. portrait & 13 engraved plates. contemporary calf, rebacked (slight staining along folds of 2 maps & to top edge of 2 plates – supplied). First Edition. Nathaniel Portlock and William Dixon, both veterans of Captain Cook’s third voyage to the Pacific in 1776-80, were engaged in 1785 by the King George’s Sound Company, to investigate reports of the lucrative fur trade on the northwest American coast and establish a trade on their behalf. Their major accomplishment, however, was the more detailed exploration and mapping of the coast and improving of Cook’s charts of the region. On the voyage out, visits were made to the Falkland and Hawaiian Islands. The two ships later separated and sailed independently for a major part of the expedition, Portlock exploring northward up along the Alaskan coast, Dixon proceeding south to Nootka Sound, and discovering Queen Charlotte Island, Port Mulgrave and Norfolk Bay. Both Dixon and Portlock published accounts of the voyage, but Portlock’s, as Hill points out, is of particular interest and value for his vivid descriptions of encounters with the Russians and American Indians. Several Indian vocabularies are also included. The maps and plans comprise a chart of the North West Coast of America, and sketches of Graham’s Harbour and Coal Bay, McLeod’s Harbour, Part of the West Side of Montague Island, Port Etches and Brooks Harbour, and Portlock’s and Gopulding’s Harbours. Cadell, in the Strand, 1793. [4],179pp. In this copy the third title in our description is bound first, with the next two following it. Quarto. Contemporary marbled paper boards with new calf backstrip and corners, gilt leather spine label. A few leaves with light foxing, else quite clean internally. Very good. This is the complete complement of works arising out of the long-standing dispute between England and Spain over the English colonization of the Mosquito Coast in Central America. Latin America had historically been controlled by Spain (for the most part) though the English established a presence in Central America in the seventeenth century, represented mostly by buccaneers or logwood cutters. By the mid-eighteenth century the region had several hundred British settlers, and their right to live in the area was seemingly affirmed by Spain in the 1763 Treaty of Paris, which ended the Seven Years' War. However, in 1779 Spain entered the American Revolutionary War as an ally of France, which had just made a treaty of alliance with the United States. This precipitated a Spanish attack on British settlements in the Mosquito Coast, in which a large amount of British property was destroyed. The Convention of London of 1786 between England and Spain called for the evacuation of British subjects from the Mosquito Coast. The arguments of the English claimants to losses that resulted from the 1779 attack and the 1786 treaty are laid out in great detail in this group of texts. Included are a historical sketch of the region and of the English presence there, a detailed chronological description of the conflict with Spain, and an account of English monetary damages and losses. Robert White was the lead counselor on behalf of the claimants. A search of OCLC reveals only three institutions that have all three of the titles listed above, the British Library, the National Library of Scotland, and the Huntington Library. Rare, and quite interesting with regard to this manifestation of the Anglo- Spanish rivalry in America. SABIN 103448, 103447, 51077. PALAU 375018, 375017.
