Bibliotheca Americana; or, a chronological catalogue of the most curious and interesting books, pamphlets, state papers, &c. upon the subject of North and South America, from the earliest period to the present, in print and manuscript ... with an introductory discourse on the present state of literature in those countries

London: printed for J. Debrett, J. Sewell, R. Baldwin & J. Bew and E. Harlowe, 1789. Quarto. Expertly bound to style in half calf over contemporary marbled paper-covered boards, spine gilt in compartments, red morocco lettering piece Provenance: New Jersey College Library (early ink stamp to upper margin of title). First edition of this important work on early printed and manuscript Americana, with a valuable introductory essay This anonymous work has in the past been ascribed variously to "[Alexander] Dalrymple, Homer, Long, and Reid" (Church), but is now known to have been written by the miscellaneous writer Leman Thomas Rede, a student of the Middle Temple (cf. Stuart C. Sherman The William and Mary Quarterly , 3rd Ser., Vol. 4, No. 3 (Jul., 1947), pp. 332-349). According to the title Rede compiled the work from the holdings of the British Museum "and the most celebrated public and private libraries, reviews, catalogues, &c.". It is of particular value as it includes manuscript material in addition to printed works, and also for the 17pp. "Introductory Discourse on the State of Literature in North and South America," which includes musings on the benefits of freedom of the press to the development of "Genius," as well as interesting details of bookselling in the United States. The demand was for small format works on practical matters; imported books were generally cheaper than home-produced editions (even with the hefty premiums that booksellers were able to place on the imports) because of the cost of materials and printers' wages. Church 1235; Sabin 5198. (10 x 8 inches). (Expert repairs to title page, some spotting).

Dissertatio de Fractura Patellae et Olecrani, Figuris illustrata [vignet]

Hagea Comitum ('s-Gravenhage),: Apud Isaacum van Cleef,, 1789.. [iv], 75, [i, blank] pp. 4to (21 x 25,5 cm.). Bound in early (German?)19th century boards, red spickled edges (sides rubbed). With two very fine folded plates (22 x37,5 & 21,5 x 40,5 cm.) by Pieter Hendrik Jonix after the drawings by Petrus Camper. ¶ Rare. A nice clean copy with ample margins. Probably the FIRST of a series of Camper's posthumously published works by the latter's son, Adriaan Gilles Camper (1759-1820). A the same time it is Camper's "opus ultimum". The first part of this work is a revised edition (with a new illustration) of Jacobus Koole' "Dissertatio de patellae fractura, praes. P. Camper" (Franeker, 1754). despite Koole's name on the title-page, this work was entirely written by Camper (c.f. the preface by Gilles Camper). The second work appears to be one of his last works. The drawing for this paper was finished at 21 February 1789, just a few weeks before his dead (7 April 1789). Garrison & Morton 4409; Visser, "Camper" (1985), p. 178.

An account of the Pelew Islands, situated in the western part of the Pacific Ocean, composed from the journals and communications of Captain Henry Wilson, and some of his officers, who, in august 1783, were there shipwrecked, in the Antelope, a packet belonging to the Honourable East India Company. Third edition.

      - London, G. Nicol, 1789.4to. Contemporary tree calf, spine richly gilt with red morocco title-label. With folding engraved chart (with small tear) and 16 engraved portraits and plates (some foxing). XXVIII,378 pp.* First edition published in London in 1788. - In 1783 the East India Packet Antelope under command of Henry Wilson, ran onto a reef near one of the Palau Islands, a previously unexplored group, and was wrecked. The crew reached shore and were well treated by the natives. From the wreck they built a small boat which they managed to get to Macao, taking with them Prince Lee Boo, the son of king Abba Thule. Lee Boo soon died of smallpox in England. Captain Wilson allowed Keate (1729-97) to write a faithful account of the events from Wilson's journals and communications. This account did much to reinforce the idea of the noble savage and it is one of the most popular 18th century books on the Pacific and also the main source of early knowledge of the Palau Islands, the most western group of the Caroline archipelago. Includes a vocabulary of the Pelew language. - A fine copy.Hill 907; Huntress 107C. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

An Account of the Pelew Islands Situated in the Western Part of the Pacific Ocean Composed from the Journals and Communications of Captain Henry Wilson and Some of His Officers Who in August 1783 Were There Shipwrecked in the Antelope, a Packet Belonging

London: Printed for John Wilson , 1789 xxx+408 pages with frontispiece, one additional plate and vocabulary of the Pelew language. Octavo (8 1/4" x 5 1/4") Original 3/4 leather with marbled boards and gilt lettering and red label to spine. (Hill 907 & 816) Fourth edition. In 1783, the East India Company packet, the Antelope out of Macao was shipwrecked on the Pelew islands (now Pelau or Belau in the western Carolines, in Micronesia). All the crew were saved and were the first Europeans to make contact with these islanders. They were lucky in that there was a Malay there, shipwrecked the year before, who was able to act as interpreter. Captain Henry Wilson and his crew developed unusually amicable relations with the Palauan inhabitants and participated in expeditions against their enemies. They were able to recover a great deal from the wreck and to build a new vessel, with which they sailed to Macau after a stay of just over three months. They took with them Lee Boo, who became a figure of fashionable interest in London. Using extensive interviews with Captain Wilson and other participants, including Lee Boo, George Keate wrote "An Account of the Pelew Islands". This work is distinctive in its account of the encounter between two cultures, for its anthropologically-minded account of Palauan culture and society, and as one of the fullest 18th-century accounts of a Pacific society. Condition:Large folding map in need of repair but complete. Corners bumped, edge wear, spine rubbed, light worming to back cover, book plate on front paste down, previous owner's name on title in neat inscription dated 1802, some shelf wear, else a good to very good copy.

A Voyage Round the World; but more particularly to the North-West Coast of America: performed in 1785, 1786, 1787, and 1788, in the King George and Queen Charlotte, Captains Portlock and Dixon.

London: John Stockdale and George Goulding, 1789 - Quarto (284 × 222 mm). Contemporary calf-backed sprinkled boards, leather tips, red morocco label. Just a little rubbed on the boards, lightly toned, some off-set from the plates, but overall a very good, clean copy. With engraved portrait frontispiece of Portlock by Mazell after Dodd, large folding map of northwest America, 5 folding charts, 5 plates of birds, 5 plates of views, 2 plates of artefacts from the Sandwich Islands, portrait of Tyaana (an Atoui chieftain). Large folding map torn at folds (without loss), some foxing, some offsetting from plates to text, one or two repairs to paper. Armorial bookplate of Charles de Constant Rebecque to the front pastedown. An excellent provenance: cousin of the political philosopher Benjamin Constant, Rebecque was known as the "le Chinois" because of his extensive travels in the Far East. After a successful mercantile career he became a member of the Representative Council of Geneva, later settling in London. First edition of Portlock's interesting circumnavigation, the principal, and successful, object of which was the opening of the fur trade in northwest America. Expedition leader Portlock sailed with Captain Dixon as co-commander; their two ships sailed part of the way independently. Though often confused, the published accounts of the two captains are also independent of each other: "the present account is also important for the supplementary details added to the geographical explorations of Captain Cook. Portlock's vivid encounters with the American Indians and the Russians serve to broaden the perspective provided by the William Beresford/George Dixon account" (Hill). Portlock appends some native vocabularies to his account of the American Indians. Portlock also discovered Portlock's Harbour, visited Hawaii three times, gave a good account of the Bengal vessel of Captain John Meares, and sailed home by way of Macao and St Helena. Two years later he served as commander of the second vessel of the second breadfruit voyage of Captain Bligh. Hill 1376; Howgego P141; NMM catalogue, Voyages & Travel, 141; Sabin 64389.         Ode aux Bougres

NP (1789). 8pp - NP (1789). 8pp. A quite rare evolutionary pamphlet which violently lambasts "sodomites". The writer frames his assault on the "execrable, unworthy race" of bardaches as a "Hymn au Con." ("bardache" was a word implying a male prostitute or catamite.) A number of such pamphlets appeared during this period, including Les Enfants de Sodome à l'Assemblée nationale, which appeared the following year. These vitriolic works were often used as political tools to discredit former elites and to make them appear depraved. See Merrick, Homosexuality in Modern France. Pastorello, La sodomie masculine dans les pamphlets révolutionnaires. Pia Enfer, 1004; Gay-Lemmonyer III, 444.Very good in 1/4 morocco binding, marbled boards and endpapers, light wear to edges.       Aux depens de L'auteur, The Hague - viii+x+254 pages with illustrations. Octavo (8 1/2" x 5 1/4") bound half leather with marbled boards and gilt lettering to spine. This first edition was not for sale and intended for subscribers only, of which an interesting list is added with 196 names. The princes themselves subscribed for 24 copies. With some copies for the author about 250 copies would have been printed. (Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana: 547) First edition. Elias Stein was a Dutch chess master, born in Lorraine into a Jewish family, he settled in The Hague. There he became the royal court's player. He explicitly related the experience of playing chess to military strategic ability. He was teacher of the princes of Orange to whom the book is dedicated in print, among them the later King William I. He recommended the Dutch Defence as the best reply to 1.d4 in his book Nouvel essai sur le jeu des échecs, avec des réflexions militaires relatives à ce jeu (1789), later published in Dutch (1834). His biography was written by F.W. von Mauvillon in a book Anweisung zur Erlernung des Schachspiels. Condition: Wear to boards, corners bumped and rubbed, spine ends rubbed with some chips, slight crack at front head hinge, previous owner's label to front pasted down else a good copy of a scarce item.         A Voyage Round The World; But More Particularly To The North-West Coast Of America: Performed In 1785, 1786, 1787, And 1788, In The King George And Queen Charlotte, Captains Portlock And Dixon

London: Printed For John Stockdale & George Goulding, 1789. - 4to. pp. xii, 384, xl. 1 large folding engraved general chart, 5 other folding engraved charts & plans, engraved frontis. portrait & 13 engraved plates. contemporary calf, rebacked (slight staining along folds of 2 maps & to top edge of 2 plates – supplied). First Edition. Nathaniel Portlock and William Dixon, both veterans of Captain Cook’s third voyage to the Pacific in 1776-80, were engaged in 1785 by the King George’s Sound Company, to investigate reports of the lucrative fur trade on the northwest American coast and establish a trade on their behalf. Their major accomplishment, however, was the more detailed exploration and mapping of the coast and improving of Cook’s charts of the region. On the voyage out, visits were made to the Falkland and Hawaiian Islands. The two ships later separated and sailed independently for a major part of the expedition, Portlock exploring northward up along the Alaskan coast, Dixon proceeding south to Nootka Sound, and discovering Queen Charlotte Island, Port Mulgrave and Norfolk Bay. Both Dixon and Portlock published accounts of the voyage, but Portlock’s, as Hill points out, is of particular interest and value for his vivid descriptions of encounters with the Russians and American Indians. Several Indian vocabularies are also included. The maps and plans comprise a chart of the North West Coast of America, and sketches of Graham’s Harbour and Coal Bay, McLeod’s Harbour, Part of the West Side of Montague Island, Port Etches and Brooks Harbour, and Portlock’s and Gopulding’s Harbours.

"The geography books which appeared in the closing decades of the eighteenth century. are of considerable significance to students of the history of ideas, for the light they shed on English interest in geography and geographical exploration at the end of the eighteenth century. One of the most imposing of these usually quite imposing books is Thomas Bankes, Edward Warren Blake, and Alexander Cook's A New Royal Authentic and Complete System of Universal Geography. A massive folio volume this was a popular work, running to six editions in the ten years from 1787 to 1797."(Frost, Thomas Bankes’s Complete System, The La Trobe Journal, 1971) [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Armorial bookplate of George Thornhill.</p><p>Reprints of parliamentary reports. Few illnesses of historic personages have been followed so closely and documented so well as the insanity of George III, king of Great Britain from 1760-1820. The king suffered five separate attacks of mental illness during his long reign, the first in 1765 and the last in 1810; this final breakdown, which ended only with the king&#39;s death, resulted in the establishment of the Regency. Of the remaining four attacks, the one that incapacitated the king between October 1788-March 1789 is the most interesting, not only because of the political turmoil it generated over the regency question, but also because of the stimulus it gave to the study of psychiatry. The question of the king&#39;s recovery was of such political importance that special committees from each house of Parliament were set up to interrogate the king&#39;s doctors about the progress and probable outcome of his illness. </p><p>These examinations, printed in the Parliamentary proceedings and republished in numerous cheap popular editions, advanced the cause of psychiatry by educating the public about mental illness and by giving an aura of respectability to the study of insanity. Guttmacher, pp. 1-15. Hunter & Macalpine, pp. 509-514. See Norman 890. </p>

        Autograph manuscript.

Versailles, May 19-July 18, 1789. - Folio and 8vo. 57 pp. Highly interesting, unpublished journal kept by either a member of the Assemblée nationale or an attendant, containing a first person account of the revolutionary events from May 19, 1789, when the clergy, nobility and third estate were negotiating amongst themselves how the French political body should be constructed. It offers a detailed account of current political debate and includes transcripts of letters from the King and other diplomats. The narrative covers the adoption of the idea of a National Assembly, the King's attempt to dissolve the assembly, and the Assembly's "tennis court oath." It closes on July 18 with news from Paris of the storming of the Bastille a few days earlier. - It is difficult to pinpoint the author of this manuscript: remarks throughout indicate that he had ties to the Dauphine region; he attends the meeting of the Dauphine committee and several times mentions Nyons. However, an apparent signature on p. 34 does not seem to match that of any of the known members from that region. - First 3 leaves with ink annotations in a modern hand; water damage and mildewing throughout (especially at upper right corners, with some loss particularly to final leaves). Extremely fragile. A rare, first-hand account of the birth of the French Revolution. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
