Keate, George; Wilson, Captain Henry
London: Printed for Captain Wilson..., 1788. Second edition. Hardcover. Very Good+. Tree calf, handsomely rebacked, with gilt-stamped ornate rules and details on spine, gilt-stamped lettering in red leather spine label; 4to (9.5 x 12 inches); pp. xxvii, [1] (directions to the binder), 378, plus frontis., folding map, and 12 plates (one of which is folding). Spine, corners, and edges of boards a bit scuffed. Some off-setting of the plates onto facing pages, some interesting marginalia (see below), and a little worming in the gutter; otherwise, text block is nice and clean, with side margins. Armorial bookplates of John Thurlow Dering (front paste-down) and Sir Samuel Hoare, Baronet (FFEP). Ticket of "Pigge Binder, Lynn" on front paste-down. A feather has been laid-in at pp. 364-5, marking the beginning of "A Vocabulary of the Pelew Language," and a lengthy manuscript addition across the bottom margins of both pages -- an early hand, and trimmed close along the bottom edge, it records an account from an officer on board the Panther, describing the Pelew monarch's devastated response to the news of the death of his son, Le Boo. A few more instances of discreet notations alongside the printed marginalia, all of it tidy (even pleasing), in black ink. An unique, handsome copy.

Dorothy Jordan, (Mrs Jordan) as 'Peggy'' in David Garrick's 'The Country Girl. Dorothy Bland (1761-1816) Born Dorothea (sometimes called Dorothy or Dora) was born near Waterford, Ireland. Dorothy was the daughter of Francis Bland (d. 1778) and his mistress, Grace Phillips. She was an Irish actress, courtesan, and the mistress and companion of the future King William IV of the United Kingdom for 20 years while he was Duke of Clarence. When she left for England she first started using the name Jordan. It's a reference to her escape across the Irish Sea, likened to the River Jordan. She took the stage name "Mrs. Jordan" as it was slightly more respectable for a married woman to be on the stage. There was no Mr. Jordan and Dorothea (Bland) Jordan never married. EISNER, Josef, [and others?].
- Bobins 1037; KVK & WorldCat (8 copies, incl. at least 2 with less than 100 pl.); Nebehay & Wagner 193; not in Abbey, Travel. A series of charming views of Vienna and its environs in the middle of Beethoven's thirty-five years there, around the time Wagner was born there, and about eight years after it became the capital of the new Austrian Empire, including views of Baden, Klosterneuburg, Bratislava and other neighbouring sites, all attractively and artistically coloured by a contemporary hand. It shows palaces, castles and ruins, churches, chapels and the Vienna cathedral, gardens and pavilions, city streets and squares, the spa at Baden, Christoph de Bach's Circus Gymnasticus, the lavish Apollo Saal, views along the Danube and more. The famous streets, squares, buildings and interiors appear bustling with fashionable ladies and gentlemen, pedestrians and horse-drawn carriages, and the river full of boats. Four views are signed by the artist, Josef Eisner (1788-1861), and about a third by the engraver, mostly Johann Jaresch (but two by Johann Boehm (ca. 1770-post 1821), probably as engraver). All plates are captioned in French and German, and numbered in the centre. With early owner's name. Although this book can have 100 plates, there is no evidence that any have been removed and none is numbered higher than 73. The present copy may therefore have been issued before the series was complete. The fact that most plates are still in their first states supports that suggestion. With a small stain affecting a couple letters on the title-page, an occasional lighter spot in some … [Click Below for Full Description]

WOOL TRADE.
London: Stafford and Davenport, 1788. Quarto, half-title, title page, 8pp. text; half-title dust-stained, otherwise fine, uncut and unopened. An interesting document on the market for wool in Britain published coincidentally with the foundation of settlement in New South Wales. Wool became the first significant export of the newly established colony, and within a generation the Australian product eclipsed British wool thanks to the introduction of fine Spanish merino stock. Longstanding law prohibiting the export of British wool protected manufacturers and raised considerable revenue through a complex system of tariffs and charges. This publication discusses new amendments to these laws (then under consideration in parliament) with a view to protecting graziers and land-owners from wrongful prosecution in the courts. The issue of informers is of central importance, and reveals importance of paid information in an era lacking effective centralised law enforcement and customs regulation. No clear resolution is expressed in this publication regarding the 'Landed Interest' who duly concede the utility of informers 'it may be asked, How any Penal Laws can be expected to be executed without holding forth Rewards to Informers? And if they should be unprincipled, the depravity of Human Nature is to be lamented more than the Bill to be blamed.' Ultimately this conflict of interests was subsumed by the importation of wool from Australia (and later New Zealand) that provided the material for British textile manufacturing on a vast scale during the nineteenth-century.

MÜLLER, OTTO FREDERIK ET AL. - [THE ZOOLOGICAL COUNTERPART TO FLORA DANICA]
Havniae (København), N. Möller (et Filii) og N. Christensen, 1788-1806. Folio. Bound in two contemporary half calf bindings (vol. 1-4) with single gilt lines to spines. Gilt leather-title-label. Small tear to upper part of one hinge of vol. I. Marbled paper over boards. Spines with light signs of wear. Four engraved title-vignettes. (2),VI,52; (4),56; (4),71,(1); (6),46 pp. + 160 engraved plates (complete). Both plates and text have been printed on thick, heavy paper and are in excellent condition. Vol. II, however has a bit of marginal brownspotting to the first text-leaves. A few plates with minor, vague, marginal brownspotting. Apart from the 160 plates in b/w as issued, there is an unusual "appendix volume" that contains the first 120 plates (I-CXX) of the work, corresponding to the plates of vols. I-III, in beautiful ORIGINAL HAND-COLOURING. Furthermore, the binding has belonged to our famous zoologist OTTO FABRICIUS (internationally renowned for his "Fauna Groenlandica" (1780) ). At the foot of every plate, Fabricius has added species- and figure-determination in his own hand, outside of the print. That these denominations are in Fabricius' hand is evident from a handwritten note on the front free end-paper: "The designations here written are added by the zoologist professor Otto Fabricius, at whose auction this work is bought by H.B. Melcior." ("De her anførte skrevne benævnelser ere tilföiede af Zoologen professor Otto Fabricius, paa hvis Auktion dette værk er kiöbt af H.B. Melcior."). Melchior was a teacher at Herlufsholm and founded the natural history collection … [Click Below for Full Description]
