Campe, Joachim Heinrich
Half-leather. Spine of vol 1 and 2 and edges damaged, some stains inside, else a reasonable copy. With a folding b/w map. Rare edition of Campe collection; no copy available in the Netherlands. Reprinted after the first edition of 1788. The German teacher Campe based his adaptation of the famous adventures of Willem IJsbrantsz Bontekoe on the earlier German adaptation in the Allgemeine Historie der Reisen zu wasser und Lande (Leipzig 1751, vol. VIII). He was especially interested in true stories that could learn something to children and yet were attractive for the youth. Bontekoe's spectacular survival after the massive explosion of his ship the Nieuw Hoorn, fitted extremely well in Campe's ideas.B0013

[Click Below for Full Description]

Walker, John
Robert Jackson, Dublin, 1788. Leather boards, maroon title with gilt letters on spine; 216 + 167 pp., 10 copperplate fold-out illus., one is color tinted. On spine: Walkers Geography. An interesting early geography textbook, compiled and written by English author, physician, and vaccination advocate John Walker (1759-1830). Divided into two books: "Principles of Philosophy and Sketches of General History," and "Description of the Earth under its Political Divisions." Makes for entertaining browsing. Right off the bat, the opening world map shows "Florida" smack-dab in the middle of North America. Includes ten copperplate fold-outs that are mostly maps. One is instead a color-tinted chart outlining the origins of the empires of Asia and Europe. A nifty old book written in colloquial narrative style. This copy includes this inscription on the opening flyleaf: "Mary Marshall, December 18th 1829. Please to return this when read." Oops. G- (Leather has moderate wear; both hinges are loosening, the front one more than the back; about a square inch of top spine material is missing; book is intact; pages have occasionally light foxing; fold-out edges have browned and have average wear; has inscription of early owner on first flyleaf; overall nice for its age, and a possible rebinding candidate, if the crafts-folk are careful.) DUPONT DE NEMOURS (Pierre-Samuel)
(Einaudi, 1667. Frère, I, 406. Goldsmiths, 13576. Kress, B.1404. December 1728 zu Brugg im heutigen Kanton Aargau geboren als Sohn des Rathsherrn Johann Z. und der Johanna Pache. (...) October 1795 … [Click Below for Full Description]

KANT, IMMANUEL. - [THE FOUNDING OF MODERN ETHICS]
- Riga, Hartknoch, 1788. 8vo. A bit later (1840'ies) half cloth with gilding to spine. Old allegorical stamp to title-page; another stamp at lower margin removed, likewise old owner's name.Otherwise a very nice copy. Woodcut title-vignette. 292 pp. First edition of Kant's second main work, the second of his critical works, and his main work on practical philosophy. Together Kant's three critiques, that of pure reason, that of practical reason and that of judgement, make up the most important contribution to philosophy since Aristotle and Plato. Kant's influence on modern philosophy is primarily due to his critical works, and with them he gives to philosophy a new and comprehensive way of dealing systematically with the problems of philosophy. In his "Critique of Practical reason" Kant establishes the "Categorical Imperative", which was to found modern ethics, and with it he establishes the moral philosophy that ties together all of his critical philosophy. The work has dominated Western ethical thought decisively from the time of its appearance.Warda: 112. See also Printing and the Mind of Man 226 (Critik der reinen Vernunft). SCHRÄMBL, Franz Anton (1751-1803)
Vienna 1788 - Copper-engraved map, with original outline colour, on four unjoined sheets, with full natural margins, in excellent condition. Sheet size of each 24 1/3 x 33 inches. A finely engraved monumental map of North America depicted shortly after the American Revolution, by a great Austrian cartographer. This is one of the largest depictions of North America made during the eighteenth-century. Schrämbl, who was by then one of Austria's most prominent cartographers, directly based this work on the map by Thomas Pownall. Pownall, a British MP, and formerly the governor of New Hampshire and Massachusetts, first produced this map in 1777. Schrämbl based his work on Pownall's 1783 second state, which showcases the former thirteen colonies as the newly independent United States of America. It was included as one of the principal maps of his grand work, the Allgemeiner Grosser Atlas . The immense scope of Schrämbl map's takes in all of the territory from James Bay, all the way down into the Spanish Main of South America. The map shows the newly independent American republic to be a small nation hugging the Atlantic seaboard, while the vast lands of the Ohio and Mississippi basins are shown to be largely uninhabited. The map covers all regions in great geographic detail. One of the most attractive features of the map is its pictorial representation of Native American villages, trading posts, mines and other features. Mexico, Central America, and the broad chain of the West Indian archipelago are also elegantly portrayed. The map features two fascinating cartographic insets; t … [Click Below for Full Description]

DENHAM, Thomas]
London: J. Johnson. MDCCLXXXVIII 1788 - 8vo., xii + 268pp., wanting front free endpaper, contemporary calf, spine simply gilt and labelled. A very good copy. First edition: scarce. A comprehensive, damning, and seemingly reasonably objective survey of the civil administration and political economy of the Vatican State during the papacy of Pius VI (1775-1799). The book was dedicated by the author to Frederick Augustus Hervey, 4th Earl of Bristol, eccentric absentee Bishop of Derry, and serial visitor to Italy (see, e.g. Ingamells p.126 et seq.]. The thirty chapters examine the inner workings of an influential but generally unpopular Papacy. Subjects examined, and objectively commented upon, include Papal finance, departments of state and the relevant officers and officials, including ministers, the governor of Rome, the Pope's auditor, the Cardinal Vicar, Rota, treasurer, the Sagra Consulta, the President of the public streets, the prefect of the Archives, the President of the Mint, of the Quays and of the Prisons, the Majordomo of the Pontifical Palace, of the Congregation del Buon Governo, &c. &c. There are other chapters on agriculture and 'bad air', manufactures, commerce, justice, and even nepotism. The name of Pope Pius VI is associated with many and often unpopular attempts to revive the splendour of Pope Leo X in the promotion of art and public works. He is best remembered in connection with the establishment of the Vatican Museum, and with an impractical and expensive attempt to drain the Pontine marshes, He has been accused of having led a futile and immoral life, … [Click Below for Full Description]

HUME, David.
London: 1788. 7 volumes bound in 5, octavo (160 x 98 mm). Contemporary sprinkled calf, triple rule gilt border to covers, spines elaborately decorated gilt, red and green morocco labels, yellow edges. Neat repair to head of spine of volume 1, small chip at foot, very occasional light spotting, one leaf with short closed tear; a very attractive set. Titles printed in red and black, woodcut vignette head- and tailpieces. Most complete edition, by virtue of the inclusion of Hume's writings on economics, being the third, enlarged edition of the second French collected works of Hume, first published in 1759-64. "The contents are differently ordered and vol. 7. is an addition, containing seven of the Political Discourses of 1752 trans[lated] by Mlle. de la Chaux" in 1767 (Jessop). The other volumes contain the Treatise concerning Human Understanding (vol. I-II), Four Dissertations (vol. II), Dialogues concerning Natural Religion (vol. III), the essays on the passions, tragedy, and taste (vol. IV), Enquiry concerning the Principles of Morals (vol. V), and Essays Moral and Political (vol. VI). The first collected edition in French was published in five volumes in 1758-60 (it was preceded by a German edition in four volumes in 1754-6; the first collected works in English, Hume's own edition, had appeared in 1753-6). Hume's works were quickly translated into French, reflecting the high regard in which he was held by a considerable number of French philosophes.
