BELL, John
William Creech, 1788. With 2 large folding maps. Contemporary calf, rebacked, spine with elaborate gilt design and labels, covers lightly rubbed; text is somewhat toned with minor repairs to maps. Generally a very good copy. Third edition of a fascinating narrative vividly detailing Bell's account of his journey through Russia to Serbia, Persia, and into China on behalf of the Russian tsar. This remarkable journey is of extreme importance as one of the most complete and interesting descriptions of travel to Asia in the late eighteenth century. Of particular importance are Bell's notes of the Dalai Lama and the Great Wall of China, as well as his astute observations on the cultures, people, customs, and government in China. Volume II also contains the lengthy journal of Mr. Lorenz de Lange, a Swedish engineer and Russian diplomat stationed at the Court of Peking from 1721-1722, which Bell calls a "curious and authentic piece" (223). Positioned in China at the request of Peter the Great, de Lange saw to it that trade and commerce negotiations went in Russia's favor. The journal provides a unique perspective on relations between Russia and China and the problems that the two countries faced over borders, trade, and commerce. His reports on the border skirmishes between Siberia, Mongolia, and China were invaluable to the Russian empire and had a profound affect on Russian foreign policy. Bell (1691-1780), a Scottish physician and traveler, became the medical attendant to Russian diplomat Artemy Petrovich Volynsky in 1714 and as a result accompanied him on a series of expedition … [Click Below for Full Description]

TOPHAM, Edward, editor.
Printed by John Bell, British Library, Strand, Bookseller to His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales,, London 1788 - First edition of these poetical selections from Topham's popular and frequently scandalous journal, the World and Fashionable Advertiser, the first English appearance in book form of the so-called Della Cruscan poets (who included Robert Merry, Berty Greatheed, Willam Parson, Hannah Cowley and Hester Piozzi).'Originally it was designed to puff Mrs ['Becky'] Wells [Topham's actress-lover], but . she took over a large part of its conduct over several years . Other associates on the paper included Miles Peter Andrews, the Revd Charles Este, and the publisher John Bell, who had a share in the management. Hannah More, referring to its emphasis on "elopements, divorces, and suicides", described the paper as full of "elegant periods and sublimated nonsense" . The first productions of the mainly Florentine-based band of English poets noted for their flamboyant sentimental verse, known as the Della Cruscans, made their first appearance in the World'.The final piece, the anononymous 'Lady T[y]rc[onel]l's Ring', is typical of the questionable taste which found Topham in frequent trouble with his fashionable readers.Later editions were entitled The British Album, of which the Cambridge History of English Literature says: 'Even the widest reading of English verse could hardly enable anyone to collect from the accumulated poetry of the last three centuries an anthology of folly and bad taste surpassing the two volumes of The British Album, the crop of a very few years and t … [Click Below for Full Description]

Staehlin
ORIGINAL ANECDOTES OF PETER THE GREAT First English Edition1788 Period tree calf binding and recently professionally re-backed to style, remains of ink inscription on the title page at the top not affecting text. Complete 448pp no engraved title page as found in later editions. First English edition of this celebration of Peter III, in form of the 'ana' in fashion at that time. Stählin (1709 - 1785) had a deep knowledge of Russia and was an important academic figure, spending most of his life in St. Petersburg as Secretary of the Academy of Sciences. His present work also includes "An Alphabetical Account of the Persons on whose Authority the Anecdotes are Given, and of the Eye-Witnesses by whom they were related".Famous collection of anecdotes about Peter the Great, based on eye-witness accounts which he collected for over twenty years during his life at the Imperial court in Saint Petersburg. Staehlin had a lot of opportunities to assemble a nice collection of stories about Peter the Great: he was the teacher of the heir to the Russian throne Peter Fedorovich, and after the latter had become Peter III of Russia, Staehlin was appointed the Emperor's librarian. Staehlin's book was published only after his death in 1785. And quickly became popular: it was translated into Russian (1786; went through 5 editions in the 18th century), French (1787) and English (1788). The anecdotes describe different events in official and private life of Peter the Great, showing his personality and often sense of humor: what he did in Paris, Danzig, or Wittenberg at Luther's tomb; what was his … [Click Below for Full Description]

GORDON, William.
(1788). GORDON, William. The History of the Rise, Progress, and Establishment, of the Independence of the United States of America: Including An Account of the Late War; and Of the Thirteen Colonies, from their Origin to that Period. London: Printed for the Author..., 1788. Four volumes. [26],504; [8],584; [8],499; [8],445,[35]pp., plus nine engraved folding maps. Contemporary tree calf, neatly rebacked in matching style, leather labels. Light tanning, occasional foxing. A very good set. A handsome set of the "first full-scale history of this war by an American; to its preparation Jefferson contributed some aid" (Howes). "Gordon is deservedly reckoned as the most impartial and reliable of the numerous historians of the American Revolution" - Sabin. Gordon was a dissenting minister in England, who like many of his class sympathized with the contention of the Thirteen Colonies. Going to America during the disturbances and becoming pastor of the church at Jamaica Plain, now a district of Boston, he was throughout the Revolution a spectator close at hand of many important events, and the associate of many of the chief patriots. Later scholarship has shown that a good part of Gordon's history was taken from the ANNUAL REGISTER. This work is noted for its folding maps, engraved by T. Conder, which include a general map of the United States as well as maps of New England, New Jersey, Virginia, the Carolinas, and the areas surrounding Boston and New York City, plus battle plans of Fort Moultrie and Yorktown. Smith, Charlotte Turner
Dublin: Published for Messrs. White, Wogan, Byrne, Moore, Jones, and Halpen, 1788. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. A Cinderella story in which the heroine stands outside the traditional economic structures of English society and ends up wealthy and happy, the novel is a fantasy. At the same time, it criticises the traditional marriage arrangements of the 18th century, which allowed women little choice and prioritised the needs of the family. Complete in 2 volumes. Vol. I: 317pp; front endpaper removed, light wear to the edges of the covers; Vol. II: 425pp, moderate wear to the edges and hinges of the covers. Both volumes are in the original full calf leather binding and are in good to good+ condition. A nice example of the rare first edition..

LAGRANGE, J.L. -- H.C. SCHUMACHER'S COPY
La Veuve DeSaint, 1788. Contemporary polished calf, spine with morocco label and gilt floriated compartmental designs, covers with gilt borders, gilt dentelles and marbled edges; a3 with small stain in paper, and other than some occasional soiling and browning, interior clean. From the library of H.C. Schumacher with his small ownership inscription dated 1810 on the verso of half-title. First edition of the author's masterpiece which laid the foundation of modern mechanics. "Perhaps the most beautiful mathematical treatise in existence; called by Hamilton, 'a kind of scientific poem.' It contains the discovery of the general equations of motion, the first epochal contribution to theoretical dynamics after Newton's Principia, next to which it has been ranked" (Evans). The book is divided into two parts: statics and dynamics, each of which addresses the subdivisions of solid bodies and fluids. Lagrange presents his discovery of the general equations of motions applicable to any system of bodies, having improved upon the calculus of variation set forth by the Bernoullis and Euler by substituting analytical treatment for their geometrical one. Lagrange (1763-1813) was born in Turin and studied under Beccaria. He is noted for his contributions to mathematics, celestial mechanics and astronomy. Ball considered him the foremost mathematician of his period. Schumacher (1780-1850), who studied astronomy under the direction of his good friend Gauss, established an observatory in Altona in 1821. He also founded the journal Astronomische Nachrichten in 1823, which is still published to … [Click Below for Full Description]
