There all the papers of the Convention were entrusted to Roger Alden, deputy secretary of the Congress” (Kammen, A Machine That Would Go of Itself: The Constitution in American Culture, p. 72). HELMAN, Isidore-Stanislaus-Henri.
Paris Chez l'Auteur n.d 1788 - Landscape folio (54 x 40 cm.), engraved title, engraved dedication, 24 engraved plates accompanied by engraved text, contemporary cartonnage binding, later manuscript label to upper cover, a little light foxing, a very good example. In this edition, the plates and the engraved text are printed on recto only next to each other on the same sheet. The plates are reductions of large plates engraved from drawings by Jesuit Attiret, on orders of the Emperor of China and the intervention of the East India Company. Cochin the French engraver was charged by M. de Marigny to oversea the work, and the plates were actually done by Aliamet, Choffard, Le Bas, Nee, Prevost and Saint-Aubin. Distribution was very strictly limited to China, and only one or two rare copies were found in Europe. It was after these sets that Helman made his fine engravings. LONDON - PHARMACOPOEIA]. [ROYAL COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS].
1788. Bell, Historical sketch of the progress of pharmacy in Great Britain, pp. 41-43; Wellcome IV, p. 364; Worldcat (3 copies). "Editio altera" of the seventh edition of the London pharmacopoeia. The sixth edition of 1788 had been the first edition influenced by enlightenment science, including the adoption of Linnaeus's system of binomial plant nomenclature. In the seventh edition of 1809, more recent insights were incorporated which had often appeared earlier in the Edinburgh and Dublin pharmacopoeias. The modern French chemical nomenclature, based on the work of Lavoisier, was finally incorporated and several other nomenclatures were reviewed and replaced. Nevertheless, the use of nomenclature and weights and the contents of recipes in the pharmacopoeia were heavily criticized. The most outspoken critique came from the London chemist Richard Phillips (1778-1851), who in an 1810 review citized 73 recipes and found 20 ambiguous measurements. Several of Philips's suggestions, as well as those of other commentators, were adopted for a revised edition which appeared in 1815 but nevertheless contained numerous errors. With a contemporary annotation on the back flyleaf and a second loosely inserted. Some spotting throughout; binding worn, most notably at the hinges; a good copy. [Attributes: First Edition]

William Shakespeare
London-John Bell, 1788 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A complete set of the famous 'Bell edition' of Shakespeare's works, includingthe two volume Prolegomena. The collection includes all of his majordramaticworks, with plates throughout. The first two volumes here are aremarkably comprehensive and broadprolegomena to his works, and offer interesting analysis of Shakespeare from an era where many of his plays were ofteninterpreted differently, both in their production and in their critical reception. They include Mr Pope's Preface, Mr Theobald's Preface, Sir T. Hanmer's Preface, Dr Warburton's Preface, Dr Johnson's Preface, Mr Stevens's Advertisement to the Second Edition, the unattributed essay On The Origin of The English Stage, the text of the Globe's company's License for Acting, a list of the original actors, and extracts from entries of the Stationer's Company, Mr Malone's Chronology, Rowe's Life of Shakespeare, and otherfascinating arcana. The subsequent eighteen volumescontain on theplays themselves, along with annotations by Samuel Johnson and George Stevens. These annotations are one of the joys of this particular work, preserving as they do the learned comments of two of 18th century England's foremost scholars in their reading of the plays. From Copac: The general title pages are dated 1788, but the plays have separate pagination and title-pages, with dates 1785, 1786, and 1788. The annotations at the ends of the plays also have separate title-pages all with the date 1787. A landmark in the cultural and critical reception of England's greatest author. Stamperia Simoniana, 1788. In 8vo (mm 182x110); pp. XLIV, 281, (3). [Click Below for Full Description]

The text, a precis of the government Report, with additional notes and a table, is sometimes attributed to William Rowley. The other variant is dated by ESTC to a year later, i.e. 1789. 2) One of 2 variants, this one, according to ESTC, held at Birmingham Central, BL, CU, NL of S, Harvard, Huntington, McMaster, Princeton & Yale. A fascinating glimpse into one of the more arresting concerns of the day, namely the sanity of the British Monarch, George III. Until recent times, every schoolboy was taught about King George's penchant for talking to the oak trees in Windsor Great Park, but the issue had far more profound constitutional and other implications. Different branches and factions of the medical profession were hence under extreme duress, and medicine became politicised in hitherto unfamiliar ways. At a safe distance in time, the subject was dramatised, to much acclaim, and made into the Oscar-winning film, "The Madness of King George", with a screenplay [1994] by Alan Bennett.

Vincenzo PAZZINI CARLI
[Click Below for Full Description]

Campe, Joachim Heinrich
Half-leather. Spine of vol 1 and 2 and edges damaged, some stains inside, else a reasonable copy. With a folding b/w map. Rare edition of Campe collection; no copy available in the Netherlands. Reprinted after the first edition of 1788. The German teacher Campe based his adaptation of the famous adventures of Willem IJsbrantsz Bontekoe on the earlier German adaptation in the Allgemeine Historie der Reisen zu wasser und Lande (Leipzig 1751, vol. VIII). He was especially interested in true stories that could learn something to children and yet were attractive for the youth. Bontekoe's spectacular survival after the massive explosion of his ship the Nieuw Hoorn, fitted extremely well in Campe's ideas.B0013

[Click Below for Full Description]
