WIDEGREN, GUSTAF.
1788 - Stockholm, J. A. Carlbohm, 1788. 4:o. (10),897,(1) pp. Contemporary half calf with raised bands, brown title label and sprinkled edges. Spine somewhat dry and blotchy. Lower corner of front board bumped. Minor foxing. Old mendings in the lower margin on p. (5) and some dampstains in the inner margin on pp. 286-314 and 398-410. Small tear in the outer margin on p. 721. Old signatures. Gustaf Widegren's (1742-1802) "Lexicon" filled the gap created when the Swedish-English dictionary by Serenius had disappeared from the market. In the preface Widegren underlines the importance of the English language in commerce and for the understanding of the many scientific discoveries made in England during that time. Many words and phrases have their respective sources mentioned. Widegren not only used expressions from the written language but also more humorous expressions and colloquial language. He emphasises terms linked to natural science, commerce and shipping. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

POUPART DE BEAUBOURG (Jean-Baptiste)]

[Click Below for Full Description]

LAGRANGE, Joseph Louis
Paris, Veuve Desaint, 1788. "Perhaps the most beautiful mathematical treatise in existence." Horblit 61. "Lagrange proposed to reduce the theory of mecanics and the art of solving problems in that field to general formulas, the mere development of which would yield all the equations necessary for the solution of every problem (...) The [book] united and presented from a single point of view the various principles of mecanics, demonstrated their connection and mutal dependence, and made it possible to judge their validity and scope. It is divided into two parts, statics and dynamics, each of which treats solid bodies and fluid separately. There are no diagrams. The methods presented require only analytic operations subordinated to a regular and uniform development. Each of the four sections begins with a historical account which is a model of the kind." DSB, VII, 570. In-4. Collation : XII, 512 pp. Veau marbré, dos à nerfs orné, tranches rouges. (Reliure de l'époque.).

PEART (Edward)
Gainsbrough: Printed by H. Mozley. First edition, [2], xxix, [1, blank], [31]-114, [2, errata leaf]pp., old faint neat stamp to title-page, recent quarter calf over marbled paper boards. Edward Peart (1755/6–1824), physician and writer on science and medicine. chiefly known for his works on physical and chemical theory. In his first work, 'The Generation of Animal Heat' (1788), Peart explained all chemical and physical phenomena by assuming the existence of four elements—aether, phlogiston, the acid principle, and earth. [He] revives the idea of John Mayow that animal combustion takes place in the substance of the muscle and not in the lung, as Lavoisier thought. In the same book he sees clearly that the constant temperature of animals in exercise and at rest must be due to a correlation of various functions, and investigates the matter experimentally in a somewhat rough way. The formula 'excitability of the muscular fibres is the great characteristic of life in animals' is still accepted. (DNB). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

KANT, Immanuel.
Riga: Johann Friedrich Hartknoch, 1788. Riga: Johann Friedrich Hartknoch,, 1788. Octavo (230 x 135 mm). Contemporary interim decorated paper wrappers printed in black and white, uncut edges. Woodcut device to title, woodcut headpiece. Printed in Gothic type. A couple of small ink marks to lower edge of title page. First edition of Kant's Critique of Practical Reason, the second of his critical works, in which he develops the concept of categorical imperative. This work established Kant's moral thinking as a cardinal reference in the successive development of ethics. "The influence of Kant is paramount in the critical method of modern philosophy. No other thinker has been able to hold with such firmness the balance between speculative and empirical ideas. His penetrating analysis of the elements involved in synthesis, and the subjective process by which these elements are realized in the individual consciousness, demonstrated the operation of 'pure reason'; and the simplicity and cogency of his arguments achieved immediate fame" (PMM).
