CARDONNEL, Adam de.
London: Printed for the Author, and sold by Edwards also by Edwards's, in Halifax. 1788. Two parts, 4to., pp. iv, 27, [1] [25 leaves]; 11, [1], [25 leaves], the unnumbered leaves prints on rectos only, with an etched illustration at the head (all signed by Cardonnel) and a letterpress description below; a fine copy, with the etchings printed in sepia, in contemporary red morocco by Edwards of Halifax, covers gilt with a border of wheels and floral sprays, spine gilt in compartments and lettered direct.First edition, the very rare issue with the plates in sepia, printed directly onto thick wove paper.Picturesque Antiquities is the chief work of the Scottish doctor turned antiquarian Adam Cardonnel, who assisted Francis Grose with his studies on Scotland in 1788-91 (Burns wrote to Grose care of Cardonnel in 1789). Cardonnel provided both the delightful illustrations and the text here, his work having one foot in the Picturesque movement and one in the revival of interest in the Gothic. Shortly afterward, in 1791, he left Scotland, having succeeded to estates in Northumberland, and took the name Adam Mansfeldt de Cardonnel-Lawson.The work went through several forms. This, the first, is found more commonly with the illustrations on india paper, pasted above the letterpress text; we can find no record of a sepia printing, nor of a quarto issue with the engravings printed directly on the paper. An octavo issue followed, and then a reprint of the quarto with a new introduction, still dated '1788' but probably printed to coincide with the publication of two further parts in 1793.Se … [Click Below for Full Description]

DENON, Dominique Vivant;
[Click Below for Full Description]

HIPPOCRATES.
London: Printed by T. Bensley; for C. Elliot, 1788. First edition of this translation; the Prognostics had previously appeared in English in Clifton's translation of 1734. The Prognostics is one of the most important of the Hippocratic writings, and the first book of the Prorrhetics is the oldest. "The dignity of the Greek physician was based more upon his supposed ability to predict clinical and epidemiological happenings than upon his power to control them. To this end, Hippocrates instituted, for the first time, a careful, systematic and thorough-going examination of the patient's condition, including the facial appearance, pulse, temperature, respiration, excreta, sputum, localized pains, and movements of the body... He introduced the doctrines of the four humors (humoral pathology), coction of food in the stomach, healing by first intention; and divided diseases into acute and chronic, endemic and epidemic" (Garrison, pp. 96-97).8vo, pp. (iii)-xx, 292. Lacking the half-title, otherwise a good copy. Modern half calf antique.

PASTA GIUSEPPE.
dalla Stamperia Locatelli,, In Bergamo, 1788. Cm. 20,5, pp. 250 (2). Legatura coeva in cartoncino leggero azzurro.

AXEL FREDERIC CRONSTEDT [translated by GUSTAV VON ENGESTROM]
THE POULTRY, LONDON, ENGLAND, UK: CHARLES DILLY(1788). 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. On offer is an original, hardcover handprinted book from 1788, regarding the Natural Science of Mineralogy (the scientific study of chemistry, crystal structure, and physical properties of minerals and mineralized artifacts). The book comes at the end of the Scientific Revolution in the Western World, roughly from 1600-1800 and is a translation of a book written by Baron Axel Fredrik Cronstedt, the famous Swedish mineralogist and chemist who discovered nickel in 1751 and is regarded as one of the founders of modern mineralogy. The title page reads like many in the 17th and 18th century, long and with much information: "An ESSAY Towards A SYSTEM OF MINERALOGY By AXEL FREDERIC CRONSTEDT, Mine-Master Or Superintendent Of Mines In Sweden. Translated From The Original Swedish, With Annotations, And An Additional Treatise On The Blow-Pipe. By GUSTAV VON ENGESTROM, Counsellor Of The College Of Mines In Sweden. THE SECOND EDITION, Greatly Enlarged And Improved, By The Addition Of THe Modern Discoveries; And By A New Arrangement of the Articles By JOHN HYACINTHE de MAGELLAN...IN TWO VOLUMES... Printed For Charles Dilly, In The Poultry M DCC LXXXVIII." In short, this the title explains that the book is of the second edition of a translation by Gustav von Engestrom of a work by the Superintendent of Swedish Mines and Baron, Axel Frederic Cronstadt, with a "new arrangement of the articles" by Portuguese Natural Philosopher John Hyacinthe de Magellan. There are 5 lines of Latin text under Magellan's name i … [Click Below for Full Description]

Titi Lucretii Cari
Apud Remondini Prostant Venetiis, 1788. WIDEGREN, GUSTAF.
1788 - Stockholm, J. A. Carlbohm, 1788. 4:o. (10),897,(1) pp. Contemporary half calf with raised bands, brown title label and sprinkled edges. Spine somewhat dry and blotchy. Lower corner of front board bumped. Minor foxing. Old mendings in the lower margin on p. (5) and some dampstains in the inner margin on pp. 286-314 and 398-410. Small tear in the outer margin on p. 721. Old signatures. Gustaf Widegren's (1742-1802) "Lexicon" filled the gap created when the Swedish-English dictionary by Serenius had disappeared from the market. In the preface Widegren underlines the importance of the English language in commerce and for the understanding of the many scientific discoveries made in England during that time. Many words and phrases have their respective sources mentioned. Widegren not only used expressions from the written language but also more humorous expressions and colloquial language. He emphasises terms linked to natural science, commerce and shipping. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

POUPART DE BEAUBOURG (Jean-Baptiste)]
