Morris, Lewis
Morrisania, 1788. [1]p. plus integral address leaf. Folio. Old fold lines. Light soiling and toning. Slight separation at some folds. About very good. In a blue half morocco and cloth clamshell case. Affectionate letter written by Lewis Morris to his son, Jacob, congratulating him on the birth of a daughter. Lewis Morris, the brother of Gouverneur Morris, was one of the few members of the landed gentry of the state of New York who supported the colonial cause. He served in the Continental Congress, was a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and served in both the New York State Militia and its Senate. His son, Jacob, though educated for a mercantile career, was moved by the patriotic fervor of the times and served as aide to both generals Charles Lee and Nathanael Greene; he served with distinction at Fort Moultrie. After the war he served in the New York legislature; the town of Morris, New York, which he settled, is named for him. Lewis Morris writes: "My dear Son, I most sincerely congratulate you on Polly's safe delivery of as fine a girl as ever you saw, it looks like your Mother, the finest feature in her face is her nose, which is very large; Polly was delivered on the 21st instant, a little after four o'clock in the afternoon, by old Mother Sickels, and she had a very fine time of it, and the old woman went away well pleased after tea with her fee. She is now very well, and has her nurse with her who seems a good creature, so that we expect in a short time she will be down again and making her boys winter cloaks, which she was very busy about just befor … [Click Below for Full Description]

Locke, John; Nikolai Nikitich Popovskii
v Tipografii Kompanii Tipograficheskoi, Moscow 1788 - Octavo (22 × 14 cm). Contemporary calf; red and gilt-lettered spine label; VIII, 323 pp. Bookplate of the distinguished collector Martin Winkler. Boards rubbed; front free end paper lightly soiled; one leaf with small tear to margin, not affecting text; still about very good. First part (of two) of the first Russian translation of Locke's famous pedagogical reflections, first published 1759, and very rare. "Despite the fact that Locke occupied a central place in European Enlightenment thought, his works were little known in Russia. Prokopovich, Kantemir, Tatishchev and perhaps Peter himself were acquainted with Locke's ideas, but for most Russians in the eighteenth century Locke was little more than an illustrious name. Locke's one book that did have a palpable impact was his Some Thoughts Concerning Education. Yet though Locke as pedagogue was popular, his reception in Russia, as Marc Raeff has noted, was overshadowed by the then current 'infatuation with Rousseau's pedagogical ideas'" (Marcus C. Levitt, "On Locke's Reception in Eighteenth-Century Russia," 219). Moreover, moralist literature as such was only scarcely represented in Russian publications of the second half of the century. Originally written for a close friend, Locke's 1693 text sets out a system for training noblemen by fostering healthy bodies and virtuous minds, based on the philosopher's assumption that all children are born without innate ideas or characteristics. The work was perhaps the most influential work on education of the eighteenth century, w … [Click Below for Full Description]

PRESENT STATE]
London G. Kearsley MDCCLXXXVIII, 1788. 12mo., xii + 262 + (2)pp., including the final errata leaf, with the old blindstamp of Worcester Public Library on title-page and occasionally elsewhere, and with the fine 19th century bookplate of the old Worcester Library> on pastedown, old, probably original, marbled boards, these rather rubbed, neatly rebacked and labelled, entirely uncut. A good copy. First edition. It is not listed (not noticed?) in either Pine-Coffin (Bibl. of British and American travel in Italy>) or Olschki (Viaggi in Europa secoli XVI-XIX>). Although self evidently this is substantially a distillation of the observations already made by Patrick Brydone in his Tour through Sicily and Malta> (1773), on the one hand, and by Henry Swinburne in his Travels in the two Sicilies> (1783-5), on the other, the author claims rather more than that in his preliminary Advertisement. 'The following work was originally compiled by a person of distinguished abilities, for the use of some young people, and contains all that is interesting in Mr. Brydone's Tour>, and Mr. Swinburne's Travels>; the very curious Observations> of Sir W. Hamilton, on the earthquake at Messina; the substance of Vertot's Knights of Malta>, &c. The publisher flatters himself that it will be found not only one of the most entertaining books for young persons, but a complete guide to the curious traveller who intends to visit those regions, so remarkable for all the wonders of art and nature'. COOK (James). KIPPIS (Andrew):
Basil: Printed by J. J. Tourneisen, 1788, 1788. FIRST CONTINENTAL EDITION. 2 volumes. 8vo, 203 x 128 mms., pp. xii, 302 [303 adverts, 304 blank]; [iv], 326, contemporary half calf, slightly orange/lemon coloured boards, spines gilt to a botanical motif, morocco labels; fore-edges of binding very slight affected by damp, spines and corners a bit worn, tops and bases of spines very slightly chipped, most of numberng label on spine of volume 2 missing. "There are numerous statues and monuments to Cook in many parts of the world, but the monument erected by Palliser in the grounds of The Vache, his country house in Chalfont St Giles, is perhaps the most significant. It consists of a square plinth, within a square tower, open on all sides, with a lengthy eulogy to Cook inscribed on the four sides of the plinth, beginning with the words 'To the Memory of Captain James Cook The ablest and most renowned Navigator this or any country hath produced'. In 1874 an obelisk to Cook's memory was erected near the spot where he fell, but the best memorial to him is the present-day map of the Pacific, which he did so much to shape" (ODNB). The Analytical Review for September, 1788, reviewing the London edition, concluded with this endorsement: "The language would, probably, in some places admit of a higher polish, but in general it is perspicuous, easy, and natural, and, in our opinion, more agreeable to the standard of classical simplicity, than the verbose, tumid, and highly figurative style so fashionable at present."

He began a long friendship with Thomas Jefferson and became acquainted with John Adams and Benjamin Franklin. Mazzei was in favor of the cause of American independence "...one of the largest and probably the most reliable works of the period on the United States. Much of the author's knowledge of American affairs had been gained from his former neighbor (Thomas Jefferson) in the first place, and the historical value of his work was considerably if not primarily due to his reliance on this invaluable source." [Mazzei, Filippo]
Paris, 1788. Four volumes bound in two. Contemporary vellum backed boards, contemporary manuscript labels. Very good. Uncut. The author emigrated to America from Italy in 1773 to introduce the cultivation of grapes and olives to the United States. He became a neighbor of Thomas Jefferson in Virginia, settling near Monticello at Jefferson's request, and this association led to their long friendship and the author's acquaintance with Franklin and Adams. A staunch Republican, he took an active role in the Independence movement. In this work Mazzei outlines the history of the American colonies, the causes of the Revolution, and the economy and government of the United States. Also discussed are Indians, slavery, emigration, and the Society of the Cincinnati. An important work which Dumas Malone characterizes as "probably the most reliable of all the works of the period on the United States." Jefferson aided Mazzei in the compilation of the work while acting as American minister in Paris. HOWES M456. SABIN 47206. MALONE, THOMAS JEFFERSON II, pp.109-10. REESE, REVOLUTIONARY HUNDRED 87.

SCOTTI, Marcello Eusebio (1742-1800)
Stamperia Simoniana, 1788. In 8vo (mm 182x110); pp. XLIV, 281, (3). [Click Below for Full Description]

Beckford, William
London: Printed for T. and J. Egerton, 1788. viii,99pp. Modern black cloth, spine gilt. Contemporary ownership inscription on titlepage, scattered manuscript annotations. Light toning and dampstaining. Very good. William Beckford was a historian and sugar planter in Jamaica, whose cousin of the same name authored the Gothic novel VATHEK. "At the death of his father in 1756 Beckford inherited the greater of part of his estate in Great Britain and Jamaica. It consisted chiefly of four sugar estates and 910 slaves in Jamaica. The total value of the estate was approximately 120,000 sterling. Beckford and his wife (about whom nothing is known) went to Jamaica in February 1774 and remained there for thirteen years.... Beckford returned to England in 1786. Within a few days of his landing he was intercepted by a bailiff and incarcerated in the Fleet prison as a debtor.... In the confines of the Fleet prison he took up his pen, partly to gain the attention of men of influence who might intervene on his behalf, partly to relieve his pecuniary embarrassment, and partly to defend the institution of slavery at the same time that he urged a course of amelioration upon his planter friends in the West Indies" - DNB. This scarce work was one of the fruits of his prison labor. CUNDALL, BIBLIOGRAPHIA JAMAICENSIS 19. SABIN 4251.

Extremities rubbed, joints cracked, small library label to front cover, faint pencil notes on title-pages identifying authors, note on flyleaf in 19th-century hand listing contents, bookplate. First edition. 27, [1] pp. 8vo. [in:] A Volume of Plays, as They are Acted at the Theatre-Royal, Smoke-Alley. Dublin. Containing The Young Quaker, The Castle of Andalusia, St Patrick's Day, The Mogul Tale, Belphegor; or, The Wishes, The Son in Law. [Dublin]: Printed for the Booksellers, 1788. The first edition, unauthorized, of Sheridan's St. Patrick's Day, bound with five other contemporary plays, each with its own title page and a general title ("A Volume of Plays"). The other plays include three by John O'Keeffe (The Young Quaker, The Castle of Andulsia, and The Son-in-Law), Elizabeth Inchbald's The Mogul Tale and Miles Peter Andrews' Belphegor. The Rothschild catalogue conjectures that the plays "were probably printed together with the intention of separating them for sale," though the presence of the general title in this copy argues that the plays were also to be sold together. The plays were certainly printed together, as the registration is continuous (for example, the first three leaves of St. Patrick's Day are unsigned E4-6). St. Patrick's Day was first performed at Covent Garden on 2 May 1775, but no authorized edition was printed in Sheridan's lifetim … [Click Below for Full Description]
