1788. n.d.. Appears to be a receipt or something scribbled by King George as his health declined. On 5th November, 1788, the king attacked his eldest son, George, Prince of Wales and tried to smash his head against the wall. One observer claimed that foam was coming from the king's mouth and his eyes were so bloodshot that they looked like currant jelly. George was placed in a strait-jacket and eventually his doctors had a special iron chair made to restrain their patient. Other treatment included putting poultices of Spanish Fly and mustard all over the King's body; the idea was that the painful blisters which resulted would draw out the "evil humours". By April 1789, George's doctors came to the conclusion that he had recovered from his madness and he was allowed to carry on with his royal duties. George continued to suffer ill-health and had further mental breakdowns in 1801 and 1804. In 1810 George III's insanity became permanent. George, Prince of Wales, was appointed regent, and carried out his father's official royal duties. George III died on 29th January 1820.

ADAMS, John (1735-1826)
1788. One and a half pages, 4to, with integral address panel. Loss where seal removed just touching signature. A very fine letter shedding light on the political conflict arising several months after the Massachusetts ratification of the constitution and the establishment of the so-called "new government." Here John Adams asks, or more specifically "begs," to be taken out of consideration for the position of senator, which appears to have been thrust upon him by Parsons and "other gentlemen." "Dear Sir From the conversation that passed between you and me when I had the pleasure to see you for a few moment at this place, I am apprehensive that you may think of me for a Senator, as I find that some other gentlemen have done and continue to do. You know very well how ungracious and odious the non acceptance of an appointment by Election is, and therefore let me beg of you, not to expose me to the necessity of incurring the censure of the public and the obloquy of individuals by so unpopular a measure. I have long revolved in an anxious mind the Duties of the Man and the Citizen, and without entering into Details at present, the result of all my reflections on the place of a Senator in the New Government is an unchangeable Determination to refuse it. With much respect and sincere affection, I am dear Sir your most obedient and most humble servant John Adams" As related in Parsons' memoir, Adams expressed "'some difficulties and doubts respecting parts of the proposed Constitution,' but, as a member for Boston in his assembly, was by his constituents expected to sustain … [Click Below for Full Description]

PAETS VAN TROOSTWYK, Adriaan and Cornelius Rudolph KRAYENHOFF.
1788. 4to, pp. xii, 319, [1] blank; with appealing engraved title-page vignette, and four folding engraved plates; title-page a little soiled and browned, light foxing and browning throughout, small stain affecting fore edge of last couple of leaves, and of outer margin of plates; First edition of this detailed, rational and erudite dissertation on the applications of electricity to physics and medicine, written in response to a prize question posed by the Royal and Patriotic Society of Valence. A contemporary review in the Monthly Review of the same year provides a useful summation: 'We are informed, in the preface, that this dissertation (originally written in Latin) was translated into French by the ingenious and learned Professor Van Swinden of Amsterdam, and that it is now published in this language at the desire of the Society for which it was written. The question, which gave occasion to it, was proposed in the following terms: Has artificial electricity, from its discovery to the present time, really contributed to the progress of physics? And has it, considered in a medical view, been of more service than prejudice to mankind? It can scarcely be supposed that such a question could admit of a negative; nor can we imagine that it was proposed as a matter of doubt. We must therefore conclude that this learned body wished to facilitate the study of electricity, by means of a general, historical, and critical, view of the several discoveries that have hitherto been made in this branch of physics, - of the meteorological theories to which they have given occasion, and of … [Click Below for Full Description]

(AUCTION CATALOGUE: [MONTESQUIOU-FÉZENSAC, Anne Pierre, marquis de])
1788. 126 pp. 8vo (195 x 130 mm.), late 19th-cent. blue sheep-backed marbled boards, spine gilt. Paris: Lebrun, 1788.A rare auction catalogue, priced throughout in a contemporary hand, of a formidable collection of paintings. Although Lugt attributes this to Montesquiou (1739-98), it seems that most of the lots did not belong to him. Jean Baptiste Pierre Lebrun (1748-1813), this sale's expert, was known to add his inventory and lesser consignments to prestigious sales for which he was responsible. Montesquiou, member of the Académie Française and a general, was close to many of the physiocrats. The present catalogue describes 276 lots of paintings by artists such as Giulio Romano, Guercino, Tintoretto, Veronese, Albani, Velazquez, Panini, J. Brueghel the Elder, Bril, Rembrandt, Brauwer, Hals, Teniers, Rubens, A. van Dyck, J. Ruysdael, Potter, Jordaens, A. & I. van Ostade, Metsu, Wynants, Wouwerman, C. Netscher, Miel, N. Robert, Greuze, Fragonard, Norblin, etc., etc. The remaining lots consist of ceramics, sculpture, Japanese lacquer and porcelain, ornate pieces of furniture, chandeliers, clocks, and girandoles (for a grand total of 417 lots). The Dutch and Flemish paintings sold for extremely high prices. The annotations also show which lots were bought-in.A very good copy. A few leaves with minor foxing.
