Joseph Priestley
J. Johnson, 1788. 2nd Edition . Hardcover. Very Good. Second Edition. xv, 204, (4)pp. Author's catalogue to the rear. Rebound in full calf with new endpapers. Joseph Priestley (1733-1804) was a theologian and natural philosopher. "Priestley's greatest contribution in making Warrington the most notable of dissenting academies was, however, in his restructuring of its curriculum. In his 'Essay on a Course of Liberal Education' (1765) he argued that the standard course of studies had been designed for pupils entering the learned professions. Most of the students at Warrington and other dissenting academies were intended, instead, for civil, active, and commercial life. A different plan should be adopted and that plan, outlined in the 'Essay' and later developed in his 'Miscellaneous Observations Relating to Education' (1778), showed Priestley as an innovative educational philosopher. Probably the most important of his innovations was the minimizing of language study, except for English, and an emphasis on that of natural history, natural philosophy, and modern history." - ODNB Condition: Very good. Sunned cover. Title page browned. Scattered foxing throughout with the occasional tidemark.

Paris; Paris: Veuve Desaint; de l'Imprimerie de la Rpublique, 1788; An V [1797]. Paris; Paris: Veuve Desaint; de l'Imprimerie de la République, 1788; An V [1797]. <p>An exceptional volume, in a fine contemporary binding, containing the first edition of Lagrange's masterpiece, the <em>Méchanique,</em> "one of the outstanding landmarks in the history of both mathematics and mechanics" (Sarton, p. 470) and "perhaps the most beautiful mathematical treatise in existence, together with the corrected second printing of the <em>Théorie, </em>containing Lagrange's formulation of calculus in terms of infinite series, which provided the basis for Augustin-Louis Cauchy's development of complex function theory in the first decades of the next century. The <em>Méchanique</em> contains the discovery of the general equations of motion, the first epochal contribution to theoretical dynamics after Newton's <em>Principia</em>" (Evans). "Lagrange's masterpiece, the <em>Méchanique Analitique</em> (Paris, 1788), laid the foundations of modern mechanics, and occupies a place in the history of the subject second only to that of Newton's <em>Principia</em>" (Wolf). "The year 1797 ... saw the appearance of the famous work of Lagrange, <em>Théorie des fonctions analytiques</em> ... This book developed with care and completeness the characteristic definition and method in terms of 'fonctions dérivées,' based upon Taylor's series, which Lagrange had proposed in 1772 ... Lagrange's <em>Théorie des fonctions</em> was only one, but by far the most important, of many attempts made about this time to furn … [Click Below for Full Description]

2 cartes et 3 planches dépliantes in fine.Reliures en pleine basane racinée d'époque. [Wimpfen (Barone di) Félix]
s.n, 1788. [Click Below for Full Description]

JOSEPH ANGELS
BALTIMORE MARYLAND MD, 1788. Offered is a super, longish 4 page, 12 x 7 and a half inches, folded letter handwritten by Joseph Angels to Mrs Whitman, his sister, dated July 24th 1788 Baltimore [Maryland]. Mr Angels proves to be a bit of a prosaic writer and by being so paints a rather interesting picture of social inclinations and mores of the time in Baltimore: 'I cannot let go so good an opportunity pass without writing by Capt Wheaton fearful lest you might suppose that as soon as I was with one sister I would forget the other. You express a desire in your letter to be particularly acquainted with the situation of our intended sister and her connections; for your satisfaction, as it is ever my wish to inform you of everything.' He goes on to detail 'Miss Barney's' family: Capt. Joshua Barney a renowned Revolutionary War hero by capturing the ship General Monk for the Federalists. He explains how the merchants of Baltimore presented the ship to General Washington. He goes on to detail a horrific, terribly devastating storm and the sudden deaths he witnessed. There is an especially interesting passage wherein he describes a two story building housing 'Ladies of Pleasure' completed destroyed by lightning all dead in a moment. He waxes on somewhat philosophically but shows himself as a moral and decent man that may surprise some. . Very Good. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Manuscript.

[Mazzei, Filippo, and Jean-Antoine-Nicolas de Caritat Condorcet, marquis de]
Paris: Chez Froullé, libraire, quai des Augustins, 1788. First edition. (4), xvi, 383, (1); (4), 259, (1); (4), 292; (4), 366 pp. 4 vols. 8vo. Mazzei emigrated to America from Italy in 1773 and introduced the cultivation of grapes and olives to the United States. He became a neighbor of Jefferson in Virginia, settling near Monticello at Jefferson's request, and this association led to their long friendship and the author's acquaintance with Franklin and Adams. A staunch Republican, Mazzei took an active role in the Independence movement. In this work he outlines the history of the American colonies, the causes of the Revolution, and the economy and government of the United States. Also discussed are Indians, slavery, emigration, and the Society of the Cincinnati. The book was a contemporary success and remains an important work which Malone characterizes as "probably the most reliable of all the works of the period on the United States" (Thomas Jefferson 2:109-110). Jefferson aided Mazzei in the compilation of the work while acting as American minister in Paris. Edition originale rare. [Click Below for Full Description]
