Among his more prominent appointments, Boschi was cardinal of the Roman basilica Santi Giovanni e Paolo and held the role of Major Penitentiary of the Apostolic Penitentiary, which was responsible for the internal forum and indulgences of the Roman Curia. According to the Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani, Cardinal Boschi participated in the papal conclaves of 1774 and 1775, but was vetoed on an election to the papacy by the Jesuit Bourbon courts. Lavater, John Caspar. Blake, William.
London: J. Johnson, 1788. Small 8vo, vi, i (errata), 224 pp, with the frontispiece designed by Fuseli and engraved by Blake. Very Good in original drab paper-covered boards, slightly worn on paper spine and at one corner : a firm and clean copy with George Goyder's bookplate and a clean copy of the engraving in the first state. Scarce in boards in this condition. First edition, first state of the plate. The frontispiece is after a drawing by Fuseli (see Essick, Blake and His Contemporaries..., 43 for the original drawing) and is a powerful image. The text notes “End of Vol. I” but no further volumes appeared as a fire destroyed Lavater’s manuscript at the printer. The Huntington Library has Blake’s own copy, extensively annotated throughout. NECKER JACQUES
chez G. Regnault, 1788. Cm. 20, pp. (4) 544. Con bel ritratto dell'A. inciso in rame all'antiporta. Cfr. Kvk; Cat. Einaudi, 4098..

WORLD MAP/(CLOUET, JEAN BAPTISTE LOUIS)
Paris, Jean Mondhare 1788. Rare world map showing a double hemisphere, richly decorated with allegorical and classical scenes. All late-handcoulored in a very attractive way. The western hempisphere is supported by Hercules who is draped in his traditional lion skin, the eastern hemisphere is supported by Atlas. The two allegorical figures are flanked by polar celestial maps and are separated by an armillary sphere with a Ptolemaic solar system on the left and a Copernician solar system on the right. Richly decorated title cartouche with the French royal arms on top, surrounded by angels. The hemispheres provide a fine depiction of the most up-to-date information derived from contemporary explorations, showing the tracks of numerous routes of exploration. Mounted in a modern blue passe partout and framed in a modern gilt frame. Map: H. 70 x L. 140 cm. Including frame: H. 130 x L. 160 cm. The Clouet / Mondhare world map is one of the most decorative double hemisphere wall maps of the world published in the second half of the eighteenth century. It was designed to be both a spectacular object and a statement of the worldliness of the owners, as it was utilized by the French Aristocracy in decorating libraries and salons and depicting the progress of the exploration of the world and scientific models of the known universe, decorated with imagery from the classical world.

HAMILTON, ALEXANDER, JAMES MADISON & JOHN JAY
New York: John and Andrew M’Lean, 1788. A spectacular association copy of The Federalist in original boards. Two volumes. Original boards, rebacked in paper, untrimmed. Title reinserted in volume one, light foxing, a few stains, minor repair to last leaf. An outstanding set. First edition of The Federalist, the most sought-after of all American books. An exceptional copy in the original boards, with the edges untrimmed. A splendid association copy from the library of Major Roger Alden. Alden enlisted as a soldier in Benedict Arnold’s expedition to Quebec in September 1776. He fought at Germantown in October 1777, and spent the winter at Valley Forge. He rose through the ranks, ultimately serving as aide-de camp, with the brevet rank of Major, to Brigadier General Jedediah Huntington. After the war Alden was elected deputy secretary of the Continental Congress, became deputy secretary of Foreign Affairs under Washington, and was the man entrusted with the original Constitution after its signing. “On September 18, 1787, the morning after it had been signed, the [Constitution] was placed on the 11:00 a.m. stagecoach for delivery to the Congress in New York City. There all the papers of the Convention were entrusted to Roger Alden, deputy secretary of the Congress” (Kammen, A Machine That Would Go of Itself: The Constitution in American Culture, p. 72). Two years later, Alden was again entrusted with the great state papers, this time including the Declaration of Independence. When the new government was formed in 1789, President Washington ordered Charles Thomson, secretary of … [Click Below for Full Description]

LOVE (John), compiler
Waymouth: Printed for, and sold by J. Love, at his Repertory, on the Esplanace..., no date, [1788]. Waymouth: Printed for, and sold by J. Love, at his Repertory, on the Esplanace..., no date, [1788]. FIRST EDITION. 8vo (in 4s), 178 x 122 mms., pp. [5] 6 - 67 [68 advert for Phoenix Fire Office), including half-title, later wrappers. A very good copy. At some time after 1762 the engraver and and (later) forger William Wynne Ryland (1733 - 1783) took John Love (1751/2 - 1793) as an apprentice. Unfortunately, in his 50th year, Ryland issued two forged bills drawn on the East India Company, and he was hanged. Love might have left his apprenticeship when Ryland went bankrupt in 1777, but by 1783 he was no longer associated with Ryland. The advert on the verso of the last leaf suggests that he had acquired some financial nous, as he was insuring "Houses, Buildings, and Ships" at this time. He was also noted for his corpulence: The New Wonderful Museum, and Extraordinary Magazine (London, 1805) described him as follows: "About this time he was remarkably thin, and became at last so lean and puny that his friends dreaded a consumption. According to the advice of his physicians he had every kind of delicious nutriment, which gave him such a habit of ease and indulgence, that Mr. Love gave himself up entirely to wine and dainties. When he became a bookseller in Weymouth, he gave full scope to his desires; through over eating and drinking he now grew as remarkably heavy and corpulent as he was before light and thin—his weight and bulk were the astonishment of all beholders; … [Click Below for Full Description]

BELL, John
William Creech, 1788. With 2 large folding maps. Contemporary calf, rebacked, spine with elaborate gilt design and labels, covers lightly rubbed; text is somewhat toned with minor repairs to maps. Generally a very good copy. Third edition of a fascinating narrative vividly detailing Bell's account of his journey through Russia to Serbia, Persia, and into China on behalf of the Russian tsar. This remarkable journey is of extreme importance as one of the most complete and interesting descriptions of travel to Asia in the late eighteenth century. Of particular importance are Bell's notes of the Dalai Lama and the Great Wall of China, as well as his astute observations on the cultures, people, customs, and government in China. Volume II also contains the lengthy journal of Mr. Lorenz de Lange, a Swedish engineer and Russian diplomat stationed at the Court of Peking from 1721-1722, which Bell calls a "curious and authentic piece" (223). Positioned in China at the request of Peter the Great, de Lange saw to it that trade and commerce negotiations went in Russia's favor. The journal provides a unique perspective on relations between Russia and China and the problems that the two countries faced over borders, trade, and commerce. His reports on the border skirmishes between Siberia, Mongolia, and China were invaluable to the Russian empire and had a profound affect on Russian foreign policy. Bell (1691-1780), a Scottish physician and traveler, became the medical attendant to Russian diplomat Artemy Petrovich Volynsky in 1714 and as a result accompanied him on a series of expedition … [Click Below for Full Description]

TOPHAM, Edward, editor.
Printed by John Bell, British Library, Strand, Bookseller to His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales,, London 1788 - First edition of these poetical selections from Topham's popular and frequently scandalous journal, the World and Fashionable Advertiser, the first English appearance in book form of the so-called Della Cruscan poets (who included Robert Merry, Berty Greatheed, Willam Parson, Hannah Cowley and Hester Piozzi).'Originally it was designed to puff Mrs ['Becky'] Wells [Topham's actress-lover], but . she took over a large part of its conduct over several years . Other associates on the paper included Miles Peter Andrews, the Revd Charles Este, and the publisher John Bell, who had a share in the management. Hannah More, referring to its emphasis on "elopements, divorces, and suicides", described the paper as full of "elegant periods and sublimated nonsense" . The first productions of the mainly Florentine-based band of English poets noted for their flamboyant sentimental verse, known as the Della Cruscans, made their first appearance in the World'.The final piece, the anononymous 'Lady T[y]rc[onel]l's Ring', is typical of the questionable taste which found Topham in frequent trouble with his fashionable readers.Later editions were entitled The British Album, of which the Cambridge History of English Literature says: 'Even the widest reading of English verse could hardly enable anyone to collect from the accumulated poetry of the last three centuries an anthology of folly and bad taste surpassing the two volumes of The British Album, the crop of a very few years and t … [Click Below for Full Description]
