Abbad y Lasierra, Iñigo; Antonio Valladares de Sotomayor, ed.
En la Imprenta de Don Antonio Espinosa, 1788. Abbad y Lasierra, a Benedictine monk, was born in Spain, lived in Puerto Rico from 1771 to 1778, and is credited as being the first historian to extensively document Puerto Rico's history, nationality, and culture. The Library of Congress catalogue record for the 1866 reprint reiterates this, saying it "is considered the first modern historical work on Puerto Rico," and then summarizes the book's contents: "It begins with the Spanish discovery and conquest of the island and ends in the late eighteenth century. Chapters twenty through forty are devoted to the study of the island's climate, economy, population, geography and natural history."

Susannah Harrison (1752-1784) was an English working-class religious poet. Her 1780 collection Songs in the Night went through at least twenty-one editions in Britain and America, making it 'one of the best selling collections written by a laboring-class poet in the late eighteenth century' (Bridget Keenan, 'Mysticims and Mystifications: The Demands of Laboring-Class Religious Poetry', Criticism, Vol. 47, No. 4 (Fall 2005), pp. 471-91). 'Probably born at Ipswich, of poor parents, [Harrison] entered domestic service when she was sixteen. Four years later illness permanently invalided her. Although without regular education, she taught herself to write, and developed much poetic power and piety. She reluctantly consented to the publication of the verses which she sang at home while awaiting death and called Songs in the Night (after Job 35:10). In the first edition (1780) they are stated to be 'by a young woman under deep afflictions', and were edited by Dr John Conder, a Congregationalist minister. A second edition was issued in 1781, with eleven additional pages. Dr Conder supplied several pages of 'Recommendation', and Susannah added an acrostic to show her name. GORDON, William (1728-1807)
London: Printed for the Author, 1788. 4 volumes, 8vo. 9 engraved folding maps and plates. Repaired tear to map of Yorktown. Contemporary tree calf, rebacked. The first edition of the "first full-scale history of this war by an American; to its preparation Jefferson contributed some aid" (Howes). Gordon was a dissenting minister in England, who like many of his class sympathized with the contention of the Thirteen Colonies. Going to America during the disturbances, and becoming pastor of the church at Jamaica Plain, now a district of Boston, he was throughout the Revolution a spectator close at hand of many important events, and the associate of many of the chief patriots. "Gordon is deservedly reckoned as the most impartial and reliable of the numerous historians of the American Revolution" (Sabin). The work is noted for its folding maps, engraved by T. Conder, which include a general map of the United States, as well as maps of New England, New Jersey, Virginia, the Carolinas, maps of the areas surrounding Boston and New York City, plus battle plans of Fort Moultrie and Yorktown. Howes G256; Sabin 28011; Larned 134; Gephart 996; Nebenzahl, Battle Plans of the American Revolution 23, 63, 86, 105, 201.

KANT, Immanuel.
Riga: Johann Friedrich Hartknoch, 1788. Octavo (195 x 118 mm). Recent half sprinkled calf and decorated boards, spine ruled in blind and in gilt in compartments, red morocco label, red edges. Original free endpapers preserved, with an ink ownership inscription to the front one; occasional light spotting as usual, final leaf with a small ink annotation; a very good copy. Printer's woodcut vignette on title, printed in Gothic type. Ownership inscription to front free endpaper. First edition of Kant's Critique of practical reason, the second of his critical works, in which he develops the concept of categorical imperative. This work established Kant's moral thinking as a cardinal reference in the successive development of ethics. "The influence of Kant is paramount in the critical method of modern philosophy. No other thinker has been able to hold with such firmness the balance between speculative and empirical ideas. His penetrating analysis of the elements involved in synthesis, and the subjective process by which these elements are realized in the individual consciousness, demonstrated the operation of 'pure reason'; and the simplicity and cogency of his arguments achieved immediate fame" (PMM). Joseph Priestley
J. Johnson 1788 - Second Edition. xv, 204, (4)pp. Author's catalogue to the rear. Rebound in full calf with new endpapers. Joseph Priestley (1733¿1804) was a theologian and natural philosopher. "Priestley's greatest contribution in making Warrington the most notable of dissenting academies was, however, in his restructuring of its curriculum. In his 'Essay on a Course of Liberal Education' (1765) he argued that the standard course of studies had been designed for pupils entering the learned professions. Most of the students at Warrington and other dissenting academies were intended, instead, for civil, active, and commercial life. A different plan should be adopted and that plan, outlined in the 'Essay' and later developed in his 'Miscellaneous Observations Relating to Education' (1778), showed Priestley as an innovative educational philosopher. Probably the most important of his innovations was the minimizing of language study, except for English, and an emphasis on that of natural history, natural philosophy, and modern history." - ODNB Condition: Very good. REID, Thomas.
Edinburgh: for John Bell; and G. G. J. & J. Robinson, London, , 1788. Quarto (262 x 203 mm). Contemporary tree calf, red morocco label, gilt rules either side of raised bands, red sprinkled edges. With the half-title. Engraved armorial bookplate of McKenzie of Coul to front pastedown. A little minor surface and edge wear; occasional light spotting; a very good copy in an unrestored contemporary binding. First Edition. Reid succeeded Adam Smith and Hutcheson at the chair of moral philosophy at Glasgow. His Essays on the Active Powers of Man "combined a defence of the concept of human free will with an attack on aspects of Hume's theory of morals. [Reid's two Essays] shaped the teaching of moral philosophy in Britain and America well into the nineteenth century, partly thanks to the influence of his disciple Dugald Stewart, but also because they provided the basis for a systematic account of the faculties of the mind which was both well suited to the practicalities of pedagogy and consistent with most variants of protestant theology" (ODNB). His advocacy of common sense as a philosophical method was given fresh currency by G. E. Moore early in the 20th century, and more recently contemporary philosophers such as William Alston and Alvin Plantinga have paid careful attention to Reid.
