JONES, Sir William.
Calcutta: Printed and sold by Manuel Cantopher, 1788. FIRST EDITION. "This slim paper, read to the Bengal Asiatic Society in 1786 and published in its Transactions, marks a turning-point in the history of linguistics and signalled the birth of comparative philology... "In 1786 Jones made his epoch-making discovery of the relationship between the Sanskrit, Gothic, Greek and Latin languages -- to which he later, erroneously, thought he could add Egyptian. His clear understanding of the basic principles of scientific linguistics provided the foundation on which Rask, Bopp and Grimm built the imposing structure of comparative Indo-European studies" (PMM). Jones (1746-1794)had established his reputation as an orientalist by his Grammar of the Persian language (1771). In 1783 he was knighted and appointed a judge of the high court in Calcutta, the administrative seat of the East India Company, an office he held until his death. Here he indulged in his oriental studies, founded the Asiatic Society of Bengal, of which he was president, and edited its journal. The first paper in this, the first volume of its journal, is "A dissertation on the orthography of Asiatick words in Roman letters", also by Jones, with 7 plates. Printing and the Mind of Man 235. The London reprint of this journal is common, but this original edition, printed in Calcutta, is much scarcer. Neither Jones's name nor the title of his paper are given on its first page.Large 4to, 1 leaf, pp. xvi, 465, (1), and 33 engraved plates. Modern half calf. Light spotting on pp. 423-431, otherwise a fine copy. The whole v … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Peter the Great]; Staehlin, (Jakob von)
London: Printed for J. Murray, No. 32, Fleet Street; J. Sewell, No. 32, Cornhill; and W. Creech, at Edinburgh, 1788. First edition in English of this lively oral history of Peter I of Russia (1672-1725), first published in German in 1785. Peter the Great overhauled the Russian military, introduced compulsory education for children of the nobility, and replaced the ranking of officials by birth with a merit-based system. Many of his policies, which elevated Western values over traditional Russian ones, proved deeply antagonistic to the political and religious establishment of his day. The English, however, tended toward "Petrolatry," viewing Peter the Great as a modern and enlightened philosopher king (Cross, Peter the Great Through British Eyes). Author Jakob von Staehlin came to Petersburg in 1735, where he headed the arts department at the Imperial Academy of Sciences (now the Russian Academy of Arts), eventually serving as tutor and librarian to Peter's grandson. In this volume, he collects eyewitness accounts of Peter the Great, gathered during his decades among the Russian nobility and royal family: "But for the pains I have taken, the facts here contained would have been buried in oblivion; and I conceive I have done an action both useful and agreeable to my contemporaries and posterity, by preserving a thousand traits that mark the character of the Russian hero." One account tells of how, eager to support Russian industry, Peter spent a month learning to work the iron forges near Moscow; another tells of his leniency to an unsuccessful assassin; and another recounts … [Click Below for Full Description]

MANUSCRIPTS)
1788 - "The Beatification of Juan Palafox y Mendoza: 2 Eighteenth-Century Manuscripts". Two manuscripts (20 x 28cm) 39ll. + 3bll. and 52ll. en Latin, Spanish and Italian in a bordeaux cloth box. The manuscripts belong to the lawsuit brought by the "devil's advocate" against Palafox. They consist of a detailed reading of Palafox's writings in search of possible offences against orthodoxy. The texts by Palafox in Spanish or Latin are accompanied by the comments of the devil's advocate in Latin. There are some notes in Italian. The case for the beatification of Palafox y Mendoza (b. Fitero, Navarra 24 June 1600, d. Osma 1 October 1659) was initiated in 1726 under Benedicto XIII and continued under the papacies of Benedict XIV, Clemente XIII, Clemente XIV and Pío VI. It became a political question since it was opposed by the Jesuits whose exemptions and privileges Palafox, as Bishop of Puebla and Viceroy of New Spain, had denounced. A vote by the Congregation then responsible for the cause was taken on 28 February 1777 and twenty-six out of forty one prelates favoured the continuation of Palafox's cause of beatification but the final decision was suspended by Pope Pius VI. As this manuscript record of the examination of Palafox's orthodoxy demonstrates the matter was far from being settled. In fact it was not resumed until 2003 under Pope John Paul II. On 17 January 2009 Pope Benedict XVI approved the decree of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints recognizing Palafox's heroic virtue, thus granting him the title of Venerable. On 27 March 2010 Pope Benedict XVI promulgated t … [Click Below for Full Description]

A PRACTICALLY UNKNOWN VERSION, WITH THE FOLLOWING IMPRINT: "À Boston, De l'imprimerie des Etats-Unis de l'Amérique". This edition does not appear in any of the bibliographies we have consulted, including WorldCat. Fifth edition of the French translation of Franklin's essay The Way to Wealth. Also includes French translations of Franklin's 1766 examination before the House of Commons, and the 1776 Pennsylvania constitution;despite indicating Boston (as in this case) or Philadelphia as the place of publication, it is widely known that all of the French editions were printed in France. The Way to Wealth is Franklin's seminal essay on work ethic and frugality, first published in English in 1758. It is a collection of adages and advice presented in Poor Richard's Almanac during its first 25 years of publication, and presented as a speech given by "Father Abraham" to a group of people. Many of the phrases Father Abraham cites continue to be familiar today. WorldCat: NO copies. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Later, in 1798, he was part of the naval force that occupied Corfu, Zante and Cephalonia. The work was endorsed by the Royal Academy of Science in Paris and deemed "well worthy of publication, both on account of the mathematical principles of manouevres which are therein explained with perspicuity and method, as well as the particular experiments and rules of practice with which it abounds; and we consider it as highly deserving the approbation of the Academy' [p. vi]. This is the first issue, identified by its dedication to Prince William Henry and a short errata; in a later issue the dedication is to the Duke of Clarence, the title Prince William Henry assumed later in 1788, and there is an additional leaf of errata. MARSHALL, William
1788. Two engraved maps (one folding & the other double-page). 4 p.l., 413, [1] pp.; 2 p.l., 366, [6] pp. Two vols. 8vo, orig. blue paper-backed boards (spines & corners a little worn & rubbed), uncut. London: T. Cadell, 1788. First edition. Marshall (1745-1818), wrote a series of studies of farming in various English countries published between 1787 and 1798. The present two volumes were the first in the series which eventually comprised twelve volumes. "Modern agricultural historians have generally held that Marshall's works on English farming are superior to those of his rival, Arthur Young, as they are more systematically arranged and based on a more thorough knowledge of a district by personal residence there. Unlike Young, Marshall was cautious about experimentation, preferring rather to advocate the best practices approved by experienced farmers. On the other hand, he lacked Young's pithy and more readable style, and acquired fewer close contacts with the leading farming figures of the time. Marshall's career, indeed, suffered in some degree from his native bluntness and acid tongue, his pride, and his sensibility to slights. Nevertheless, from the independence of his views arose his remarkably early support for agricultural education, and his belief in the necessity of studying agriculture on a regional basis, both of which were ideas well before their time."-ODNB. Marshall was interested in dialects and he was the first to form a collection of words peculiar to the Yorkshire dialect. It is appended here (pp. 314-66) and contains about eleven hundred … [Click Below for Full Description]

Gordon, William
London: Printed for the Author..., 1788. Four volumes. [26],504; [8],584; [8],499; [8],445,[35]pp., plus nine engraved folding maps and plates. Contemporary tree calf, expertly rebacked to style retaining original labels. Very good. A handsome set of the "first full-scale history of this war by an American; to its preparation Jefferson contributed some aid" (Howes). "Gordon is deservedly reckoned as the most impartial and reliable of the numerous historians of the American Revolution" - Sabin. Gordon was a dissenting minister in England, who like many of his class sympathized with the contention of the Thirteen Colonies. Going to America during the disturbances and becoming pastor of the church at Jamaica Plain, now a district of Boston, he was throughout the Revolution a spectator close at hand of many important events, and the associate of many of the chief patriots. Later scholarship has shown that a good part of Gordon's history was taken from the ANNUAL REGISTER. This work is noted for its folding maps, engraved by T. Conder, which include a general map of the United States as well as maps of New England, New Jersey, Virginia, the Carolinas, and the areas surrounding Boston and New York City, plus battle plans of Fort Moultrie and Yorktown. Howes C324; Sabin 12227. <br> "In its completed form constitutes the first trustworthy record of life in the United States" - Howes. "This journal is one of the most notable of American travel accounts of the Revolutionary period not only because of Chastellux's keen observation and directness of his narrative but also because of his acute comments on society and the character of the people in different walks of life," (Clark I, 212). Chastellux served in the American Revolution as a Major General in the French expeditionary forces of the Comte de Rochambeau. Chastellux acted as the principal liaison officer between the French commander in chief and George Washington. 1788 - its Situation, Produce, and the General Disposition of its Inhabitants. With an Inquiry into the Rise and Progress of the Slave Trade, its Nature and Lamentable Effects. New (4th) edition. 12mo. Later half red morocco, spine professionally rebacked, with marbled paper boards. Slight rubbing. Lacks half title page. Preliminary pages lightly foxed. Very good. xiii (of xv), 131pp. plus 1 page list of Tracts on Slavery. London, J. Phillips, First published in Philadelphia in 1771, this edition was published afterBenezet's death in 1784,with the4pp.?advertisement? before the introductionserving as a brief biography of the author. One of a series of pamphlets produced by Benezet explicating the horrors of slavery with a view to abolition. Though there is a certain amount of repetition of sources between these pamphlets, this title in particular was intended specifically as an ?impartial enquiry? to vindicate the oft cited pro-slave trade justification that ?the slavery of the Negroes took its rise from a desire, in the purchasers, to save the lives of such of them as were taken captives in war, who would otherwise have been sacrificed to the implacable revenge of their conquerors? By examining a variety of first hand accounts of trade and exploration on the African continent, Benezet sets out to fully discredit this assertion. He does this through outlining the influence of European factors and trading posts on local conflict, in particular emphasising the corrupting influence that tax on slave ships had on local rulers. Alongside this, the frank descriptions of African so … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]
