(FOSCOLO UGO). VERGILIUS MARO.
Lipsia, Caspar Fritsch, 1788-1789. Foscolo, Opere, Einaudi-Gallimard, 1994, vol. I, pp. 65-66).

The entire crew managed to get safely ashore, where they were well treated by the natives and eventually managed to build a small vessel from the wreck, in which they reached Macao. Original watercolor created for the manuscript folio The Felidae. Cat Kind 19th Century Watercolor over graphite Each numbered and annotated in pencil Framed size: 15 measuring 27" x 24"; 2 measuring 24" x 27" Provenance: H. Bradley Martin The expansion of trade and growing exploration of the world, during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, brought about a growing interest in the exotic with wild animals being captured and returned to Europe as both objects of curiosity and scientific specimens. In Britain, the eminent doctor William Hunter led the way in the study of these animals, acquiring not only living specimens but also assembling a considerable collection of paintings. The field was also aided by the foundation of the Linnaean Society in 1788, named after the creator of the now universal system of nomenclature for plants and animals. This institution expressly encouraged ‘the cultivation of the Science of Natural History in all its branches.’ Interest extended beyond scientific study to the general public at large and a menagerie was established at Exeter Change in the Strand by Pidock, a trader in wild animals. This proved to be exceptionally popular with the London public and artists frequently used it as a source for their paintings and drawings. Publications also fed the public interest in the exotic and perhaps Samuel Howitt’s Oriental Field Sports, is the finest example of this kind. Howitt, along with Charles Hamilton Smith, contributed to the stunning images of cats to be found in the manuscript Felidae. Smith, a lieutenant colonel in the army, seems t … [Click Below for Full Description]

More, Hannah
London: Printed for T. Cadell, in the Strand, 1788. First Edition. An excellent copy of this exceptionally rare abolitionist work. Quarter calf with marbled boards; text block is tight and internally clean, with only occasional mild foxing not affecting text. Slavery: A Poem has not appeared at auction since 1956, and according to OCLC the only known copy in an institution is housed at the British Library. Hannah More, one of the leading activists of her time, firmly believed in applying education to improve the lives of women and minorities. Composed to support William Wilberforce's parliamentary campaign for abolition, her poem Slavery was read aloud at rallies and meetings, and its use of sound was designed to strike at its audience mentally and emotionally, encouraging listeners to question the importance of skin color. Drawing on religious doctrines and political philosophy, she urged listeners to consider the illogic of their own racism; and she powerfully blended these arguments into a tragic narrative depicting a female slave being torn from her children. "Does then th' immortal principle within Change with the casual colour of a skin? Does matter govern spirit? or is mind Degraded by the form to which tis join'd? No: they have heads to think, and hearts to feel, And souls to act with firm, tho' erring zeal; For they have keen affections, kind desires, Love strong as death, and active patriot fires." The Broadview Anthology suggests that More's poem was widely read among abolitionists, and in its own time it was considered successful for its ability to "force pro-sl … [Click Below for Full Description]

REID Thomas
1788. First edition. 4to (272 x 218mm). vii, [1], 493, [3], pp. Contemporary tree calf, boards with a blind double-fillet border, spine divided into six panels by gilt rules, the second panel lettered in gilt on red morocco label (neatly rebacked, retaining the original spine, with a ?Restored by Aquarius London? label to front pastedown front cover). Edinburgh: for John Bell, and G.G.G. and G.J. Robinson, London, Reid followed Adam Smith and Francis Hutcheson at the chair of moral philosophy at Glasgow. In this work, with its central theme of the Philosophy of Common Sense, Reid distinguished himself from both his predecessors; from Hutcheson's claim that a moral sense and benevolent action were equatable, and from Smith who seemed to Reid to ally sympathy and moral relations too closely. However, Reid's true opponent was Hume. Reid's assertion that morality was a rational form of duty (in this case to God) was in direct contradistinction to Hume's reduction of morals to the whims of human nature. In this both prepared the ground for the later debate between Dugald Stewart and Francis Jeffrey. Provenance: Light booksellers pencil notes. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

LAGRANGE, Joseph Louis de
Veuve Desaint; de l’Imprimerie de la République 1788; An V [1797], Paris; Paris. An exceptional volume, in a fine contemporary binding, containing the first edition of Lagrange?s masterpiece, the Méchanique, ?one of the outstanding landmarks in the history of both mathematics and mechanics? (Sarton, p. 470) and ?perhaps the most beautiful mathematical treatise in existence, together with the corrected second printing of the Théorie, containing Lagrange?s formulation of calculus in terms of infinite series, which provided the basis for Augustin-Louis Cauchy?s development of complex function theory in the first decades of the next century. The Méchanique contains the discovery of the general equations of motion, the first epochal contribution to theoretical dynamics after Newton?s Principia? (Evans). ?Lagrange?s masterpiece, the Méchanique Analitique (Paris, 1788), laid the foundations of modern mechanics, and occupies a place in the history of the subject second only to that of Newton?s Principia? (Wolf). ?The year 1797 ? saw the appearance of the famous work of Lagrange, Théorie des fonctions analytiques ? This book developed with care and completeness the characteristic definition and method in terms of ?fonctions dérivées,? based upon Taylor?s series, which Lagrange had proposed in 1772 ? Lagrange?s Théorie des fonctions was only one, but by far the most important, of many attempts made about this time to furnish the calculus with a basis which would logically modify or supplant those given in terms of limits and infinitesimals? Wesley, John
Printed for the Author, London, 1788. Fifth edition of Reverend John Wesley's Methodist doctrinal standard. Quarto, bound in three quarters morocco, black morocco spine label, gilt titles to the spine, engraved frontispiece portrait of Wesley by Ridley from an original drawing by Edridge. In near fine condition. An exceptional example. One of the three founders of Methodism, English minister John Wesley wrote, edited and abridged over 400 theological and political publications. A clear and concise writer, his Forty-Four Sermons and Notes Upon the New Testament became Methodist doctrinal standards distinguished by Wesley's theological focus on the primacy of Scripture, assurance of salvation, imparted righteousness, and the possibility of perfection in love. A key step in the development of Wesley's ministry was travelling and preaching outdoors; moving across England and Ireland Wesley appointed hundreds of unordained evangelists who, in turn, traveled and preached as he did, becoming leaders in resolving many social issues of the day including the abolition of slavery. Moritz, Karl Philipp.
Braunschweig, Schulbuchhandlung, 1788. MOZART, Wolfgang Amadeus 1756-1791
We believe this to be the only autograph manuscript of a complete work by Mozart offered for sale within the last 25 years. The present manuscript is also interesting for its reference to "Turkish music," also employed in the composer's Die Entführing aus dem Serail K.384 and the Alla Turca piano rondo K.331. The piece, quite programmatic in nature, dates from Mozart's "annus mirabilis," 1788, the year in which he also composed the last of the three symphonies (K.543, K.550 and K.551, the Jupiter) and the string trio K.563. "La Bataille" was associated with events in Austria's military campaign against the Turks in 1788-1791; its instrumentation is particularly notable in calling for various combinations including trumpet, fife, and drum and, in the coda, war-like sound effects created by the methods in which the basses are struck. "Mozart composed dance music throughout his life. His first surviving dances, a set of minuets composed in Salzburg, dated from 1769; between that date and 1791 he composed over thirty sets of dances, as well as a number of independent works, around 200 single dances in all, for Prague and Vienna, as well as Salzburg. Mozart was an enthusiastic and accomplished dancer himself..." "... In Vienna in the 1780s Mozart's enthusiasm for dancing coincided with a general upsurge in the popularity of the pastime... Dancing took place in inns, parks and dance halls but the highpoint of the year was the series of Carnival balls held under the auspices of the court in the Redoutensall... Followed by contemporary ink manuscript index on four succeeding blank pages. Bound in modern quarter calf and marbled boards. Light to moderate foxing, Good+. An early printing of the proposed Constitution appears at pages 3-19, followed by the Resolution of Submission and the Letter to Congress dated September 17, 1787, the day on which the delegates signed the Constitution. The Debates and other proceedings, commencing January 9, 1788, begin at page 23, and are reported in detail. Included are, not only the yeas and nays, but also the debates and speeches [summarized in varying degrees] of the delegates. Hancock, Adams, Gerry, Ames, King, Sedgwick, Minot, and other luminaries participated in one of the most thoughtful recorded discussions on the foundations of a just republican society, the nature of good government, and the means of protecting citizens against its encroachments. Massachusetts ratified the Constitution on February 6, 1788, proposing amendments that would explicitly guarantee the reserved rights of the States, trial by jury, and other protections. The minority's concerns-- about the absence of a Bill of Rights, the overshadowing of local governments-- and their final gracious assent to the ultimate verdict against them, are also reported here. Gordon, William
London: Printed for the Author and sold by Charles Dilly and James Buckland, 1788. First edition. 8vo. 4 volumes: (26), 504; (8), 584; (8), 499; (8), 446, (34, index) pp. Nine engraved folding maps and plans; errata. Gordon sympathized with the Colonials so much that he resigned his pastorate in England and emigrated to America. According to Justin Windsor in his "Narrative and Critical History of America," he interviewed Nathanael Greene, which may explain a more thorough reading of the southern campaign. The details of the maps are exceptional. Howes G-256: "First full-scale history of this war by an American; to its preparation Jefferson contributed some aid." Sabin 28011: "Gordon is deservedly reckoned as the most impartial and reliable of the numerous historians of the American Revolution." Gephart 996. Reese Revolutionary Hundred 86. Larned 1341: "Becoming pastor of the church at Jamaica Plain, now a district of Boston, [Gordon] was throughout the Revolution a spectator close at hand of many important events, and the associate of many of the chief patriots. Returning to England he published his history, which has been held to be a source of value for more than a hundred years." Sowerby 487, a 4-page entry showing correspondence between Gordon and Jefferson and outlining Jefferson's contributions. An attractive copy, the text crisp and clean, in a lovely new binding. Period-style calf, gilt rules and leather labels on spine, gilt scroll on edges, by Philip Dusel. (9753).

Gordon, William:
London: Printed for the Author..., 1788. Four volumes. [26],504; [8],584; [8],499; [8],445,[35]pp., plus nine engraved folding maps and plates. Contemporary tree calf, expertly rebacked to style retaining original labels. Very good. A handsome set of the "first full-scale history of this war by an American; to its preparation Jefferson contributed some aid" (Howes). "Gordon is deservedly reckoned as the most impartial and reliable of the numerous historians of the American Revolution" - Sabin. Gordon was a dissenting minister in England, who like many of his class sympathized with the contention of the Thirteen Colonies. Going to America during the disturbances and becoming pastor of the church at Jamaica Plain, now a district of Boston, he was throughout the Revolution a spectator close at hand of many important events, and the associate of many of the chief patriots. Later scholarship has shown that a good part of Gordon's history was taken from the ANNUAL REGISTER. This work is noted for its folding maps, engraved by T. Conder, which include a general map of the United States as well as maps of New England, New Jersey, Virginia, the Carolinas, and the areas surrounding Boston and New York City, plus battle plans of Fort Moultrie and Yorktown. HOWES G256, "aa." SABIN 28011. LARNED 1341. GEPHART 996. NEBENZAHL, BATTLE PLANS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION 23, 63, 86, 105, 201. REESE, REVOLUTIONARY HUNDRED 86.
