Abbad y Lasierra, Iñigo; Antonio Valladares de Sotomayor, ed.
En la Imprenta de Don Antonio Espinosa, 1788. Abbad y Lasierra, a Benedictine monk, was born in Spain, lived in Puerto Rico from 1771 to 1778, and is credited as being the first historian to extensively document Puerto Rico's history, nationality, and culture. The Library of Congress catalogue record for the 1866 reprint reiterates this, saying it "is considered the first modern historical work on Puerto Rico," and then summarizes the book's contents: "It begins with the Spanish discovery and conquest of the island and ends in the late eighteenth century. Chapters twenty through forty are devoted to the study of the island's climate, economy, population, geography and natural history."

Walenta, J(oseph).
1788. Small oblong folio (318 x 192 mm). 2 parts in 1 volume. 60 pp. With engraved title, 12 views and 4 plans, all engraved and in original hand colour. (2), 68 pp. With 13 views and 6 plans, one of which folded, all engraved and in original hand colour. Contemporary marbled boards. A rare and appealing, ambitiously illustrated volume about the Austro-Turkish and Russo-Turkish Wars taking place concurrently between 1787 and 1792, when the Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II and Russian empress Catherine the Great fought as allies against the Ottoman Empire. The text gives an account of the military operations; the 35 coloured engravings by Anton Balzer show plans and views of towns, fortresses, field camps and battles near Belgrade, Gradiska, Bucarest, Khotyn, Dreznik castle, Dubica, Foksan, Calafat, Novi Sad, Orsova, Ochakiv, Zemun and other places, as well as on the Black Sea. - The trigger for the escalation of the conflict was the Russian annexation of the Crimea in 1783: the peninsula was part of the Ottoman Empire, and when Russia was pressured again to surrender it along with its possessions near the Black Sea, Catherine declared war. After years of fighting which involved heavy losses, Joseph's younger brother and successor Leopold II made peace with the Ottoman Empire in 1791 by the Treaty of Sistova. Austria gave up all conquered territories, keeping only Orsowa on the northern shore of the Danube. In the following year, Russia and the Ottoman Empire signed the Treaty of Jassy, recognizing the Russian annexation of the Crimea and other formerly Ottoman territories along … [Click Below for Full Description]

Second, enlarged edition, published posthumously: a treatise on the projected creation of a provincial administration in France, urged by the problem of tax collection. MÜLLER, JOHANN HELFRICH.
Frankfurt am Main, Varrentrapp & Wenner, 1788. 8vo. In contemporary modest paper covered board with paper titel-label to spine. Wear to extremities and circular press-mark to back board. Internally fine. (4), 222, (4) pp. ¶ The rare first edition of Müller's set of tables created by his famous universal calculating machine (described in his seminal 1786-publication), predating Charles Babbage's differential engine by 40 years. Thereby Müller became the first in the history of mathematics to construct mathematical tables by a computing machine, the present publication being the very first appearance of these. In the beginning of 1780ies Müller was asked by the local superintendent's office to check and recalculate some tables relating to the volumes of trees. To shorten this task he had come up with the idea of a machine for the purpose. Soon he realized however that with a few small changes, he could get the machine to perform subtraction, division and multiplication as well. Müller's calculating machine is very similar to the machine of Hahn and was based on the Stepped Drum of Leibniz, but considerably larger. It was in the form of a round box with a handle placed centrally and the number wheels concentrically arranged around the handle. It could calculate with 14 figures and its number and gear wheels could be altered to enable it to operate with non-decimal number systems."When Müller heard about Hahn's machine and its difficulties, he built his own version. This was a modest four-function calculating machine based on a design first created by G. W. Leibniz over a hundr … [Click Below for Full Description]

Grosier, Jean-Baptiste Gabriel Alexandre:
London: G. G. J. and J. Robinson, 1788. First English Edition. Band 1: 1 Karte, VII, XVI, 582 Seiten. Jahrhundert. Modern cloth re-binding with one map and 15 copper-plates. Clean book in a good condition from a non smoking environment. The 2nd volume has some light waterdamage on the upper part of the first and last 25 pages, which includes 6 of the plates. In spite of wear, a nice and tight copy, which is completely unrestored. XII,512 pp. ¶ First edition of Lagrange's masterpiece, "which laid the foundation of modern mechanics, and which occupies a place in the history of the subject second only to that of Newton's Principia". (Wolf). In "Méchanique Analytique" Lagrange reformulated classical Newtonian mechanics in a purely analytical manner, whereas Newton derived his results geometrically, or synthetically, with the aid of figures. "Lagrange proposed to reduce the theory of mechanics and the art of solving problems in that field to general formulas, the mere development of which would yield all the equations necessary for the solution of every problem." (DSB). In his preface, Lagrange draws attention to the absence of diagrams in the book, which he believed the lucidity of his own presentation had rendered superfluous. JONES, WILLIAM. - [FOUNDING COMPARATIVE PHILOLOGY - PMM 235]

Extracted and bound in a recent vey nice marbled dark blue paper-binding w. matching gilt burgundy leather title-label to front board. A very nice and clean copy. Pp. 415-431 ¶ The seminal first edition of this groundbreaking paper which determined the connection between the Indo-European languages and thereby founded comparative philology and Indo-European studies. "This slim paper read to the Bengal Asiatic Society and published in its "Transaction" marks a turning-point in the history of linguistics and signaled the birth of comparative philology." (PMM 235).Sir William Jones (1746-1794) was an English philologist and judge who was stationed in India in 1780. He is the founder of the Asiatic Society and now famous as the discoverer and propounder of the existence of a relationship between the Indo-European languages. As he was stationed in India, he set out to master the ancient Sanskrit language, among other things in order to study native Indian law codes, which were written in this language. Due to his excellent language skills and his already perfect mastering of Greek and Latin, Jones discovered a shocking similarity between the languages in a huge number of words. By this discovery of the connection between Latin, Greek and Sanskrit, Jones had, without realizing it initially, discovered what was to be known as proto-Indo-European, -the lost mother tongue of almost all European, Indian and Russian languages as well as some Middle Eastern ones. And thus, with this breakthrou … [Click Below for Full Description]

DOLIVIER (Pierre).
Sans lieu, ni nom d'imprimeur, 1788. in-8. 1f. 34pp. Cartonnage moderne genre ancien.
In contemporary modest paper covered board with paper titel-label to spine. Wear to extremities and circular press-mark to back board. Internally fine. (4), 222, (4) pp. The rare first edition of Müller's set of tables created by his famous universal calculating machine (described in his seminal 1786-publication), predating Charles Babbage's differential engine by 40 years. W. Leibniz over a hundred … [Click Below for Full Description]

(Einaudi, 3185. Goldsmiths, 13642. INED, 2556. Kress, B.1437. Rumsey, James
Philadelphia: Printed by Joseph James, 1788. 26pp. Small octavo. Contemporary paper wrappers, uncut. Wrappers split, else very good. Provenance: W.H.H. Newman (Buffalo, New York, bookplate and signature on title). Second edition, second issue of this important early pamphlet on steam navigation by one of the two American steam pioneers. James Rumsey's pamphlet was first published under a slightly different title (A PLAN WHEREIN THE POWER OF STEAM IS FULLY SHEWN...) in 1788. It was then reprinted with this title, in two different issues (the first with the word "chep" on the title, the second with the word correctly spelled, as here). Rumsey states in the "Advertisement" on the verso of the title that this pamphlet is reprinted from "a pamphlet published in Virginia, to prove the authors prior right of applying steam, to propel boats &c. as well as to establish the principles on which he has done it, a few copies were then thought sufficient for that purpose, but as Mr. Fitch intends to answer the pamphlet, it is therefore necessary to re-publish as much of it as respects Mr. Fitch, which is done with no other variation, from the original, than to correct a few of the omissions and mistakes that were introduced into the first publication." Rumsey and John Fitch entered into a controversy over whose steam-powered boat had priority. Fitch was the first to publicize his invention and obtained a fourteen- year privilege for the manufacture of steam vessels, giving him a virtual monopoly on its production in America. Rumsey's pamphlet prompted John Fitch to reply by publish … [Click Below for Full Description]
