George Eunson
Newcastle upon Tyne: Printed for the Author, 1788 A good copy of the scarce 1st edition. Written as a protest - the author's preface states 'the design of publishing....is rather to make more clearly known the hardships and unconstitutional government of this Burgh'. Eunson has an interesting history: some accounts state that he was a smuggler who turned 'gamekeeper' being made an Officer of Excise by an influential patron. His zeal made him enemies who then had him arrested and locked up. The book is said to be his revenge and he does not hold back - accusing the nobility of rigging elections in favour of their cronies; and that the legal profession were involved in smuggling. This copy is in a half leather binding with raised bands and title label to spine and marbled boards. It is in good clean condition with some wear to the front spine joint and general rubbing and wear to corners and edges. There is the bookplate of John Davie Manson Robertson, a noted Orcadian, to the front pastedown and a pencilled signature to the fep. Contents: blank; title page; dedication; general preface 4pp; and text to p127 - which includes some poetry (eg 'Petty Tyrants, or Grinders of the Poor'); finis. The title page has some paper repair; there are a couple of small repaired edge tears at pp 30 and 82; the corner tip of p99 is missing; there is small loss to the bottom of p109; and light worming notice from p102 with very slight loss of text.

STOLL, Caspar (c.1730-1791)
Jan Christaan Sepp, Amsterdam, 1788. Hand colored illustrated titles to each volume, 70 hand coloured engraved plates (29 Cicaden and 41 Wantzen), illustrating 471 figures. Text in Dutch and French. The first volume with general title page preceding the sectional one. Contemporary marbled calf, covers with wide borders in gilt, flat spines tooled in gilt, marbled endpapers, gilt edges, expert repairs to joints Beautifully illustrated and colored work on insects from the order Hemiptera, including cicadas: complete with both parts. Published in twelve parts, this work was "the first serious scientific work on these groups of insects" (Landwehr). The work describes the cicadidae and insects of the order heteroptera of all parts of the world, but with many from the Dutch colonies of Surinam, the Cape of Good Hope and the Coromandel coast. Stoll worked with Pieter Cramer on his monumental work on butterflies, becoming its principal author after Cramer's death. Contemporary records describe him as being a clerk in the Admiralty of Amsterdam, but was evidently well regarded as an amateur entomologist and collector of specimens. The beautiful work is published by Jan Christiaan Sepp, the most acclaimed Dutch publisher of colored natural history books of the 18th century. Bradley Martin The expansion of trade and growing exploration of the world, during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, brought about a growing interest in the exotic with wild animals being captured and returned to Europe as both objects of curiosity and scientific specimens. In Britain, the eminent doctor William Hunter led the way in the study of these animals, acquiring not only living specimens but also assembling a considerable collection of paintings. The field was also aided by the foundation of the Linnaean Society in 1788, named after the creator of the now universal system of nomenclature for plants and animals. This institution expressly encouraged ‘the cultivation of the Science of Natural History in all its branches.’ Interest extended beyond scientific study to the general public at large and a menagerie was established at Exeter Change in the Strand by Pidock, a trader in wild animals. This proved to be exceptionally popular with the London public and artists frequently used it as a source for their paintings and drawings. Publications also fed the public interest in the exotic and perhaps Samuel Howitt’s Oriental Field Sports, is the finest example of this kind. Howitt, along with Charles Hamilton Smith, contributed to the stunning images of cats to be found in the manuscript Felidae. Well printed in brown ink, cleaned and titles mounted below the prints, in very good condition. § Second state of The Idle Laundress, third state of Industrious Cottager, good impressions. These two prints were designed to be issued together but they are extremely rarely found so. I have had two copies of the first plate (third state) and one copy of any state of the second plate. The second plate is known in one copy each of the first and second states, and 4 copies of the third state. Essick, The Separate Plates of William Blake, XXX and XXXI.

Wurzbach II, 229.
(vergl. [Click Below for Full Description]

Scotti Marcello Eusebio
Naples Di Simone 1788. 8° (182x110 mm). XLIV, 281, [3] pages. Complete with the last blank leaf. Contemporary vellum, over pasteboards. Smooth spine, title and imprint on double morocco lettering-piece. Covers and spine somewhat worn and rubbed. A good, genuine copy; some staining and foxing due to the quality of the paper.Extremely rare first edition of this catechism written – as signalled by its title, Nautical Catechism – for the education of seamen. No longer allowed to preach from the pulpit, Scotti undertook the writing of his Nautical Catechism. The text focuses on the duties of seamen, insisting on the importance of being educated in navigation and commerce, practic … [Click Below for Full Description]

Erotica.) D***, Médecin [pseud., i.e. Vital Puissant]
aux Sources de l'Amour, 1788. LIMITED EDITION, 1/125 on Papier Vélin fort, out of a total of 151 (the odd 1 on vellum), small woodcut vignette on title, this repeated on divisional title, and 2 others as tailpieces, a few tears thanks to the brittleness of the paper, but no loss, pp. vi, [7-] 71, [1], 8vo, uncut in late 19th-century half brown morocco, spine gilt, spine a little defective at either end. A sort of pharmacopeia of love potions, advice on kissing, &c. The only copy of this we have been able to locate is BL, but it does not appear in 'The Private Case.' The imprint, though nice, is false (Vital Puissant, however, is a real name). Printed in Brussels, 1876? The Greeks agreed that Aphrodite landed at the site of Paphos when she rose from the sea.
