img{max-width:100%} ITEM DESCRIPTION Jack Lord ESTATE personal 1788 Keate's Pelew Islands book maps,1803 supplement$600.00 NOTE--shipping is free TO THE USA. Foreign countries will cost $50 or more.I am selling several items that belonged to Jack Lord of Hawaii 5-0 and Stoney Burke fame on EBAY right now. Absolutely guaranteed to originate from the estate of Jack Lord ! Bought directly from the estate in 2007 on EBAY and I have the First Hawaiian Bank COA to prove it. ABOUT THE JACK LORD ESTATE Some things about how the estate was handled----First Hawaiian bank was the executor of the estate or at the very least they were commissioned to dispose of Jack and Marie Lord's personal belongings and I believe the proceeds were donated to some designated charity. The bank hired a woman in CA who was already an established EBAY seller to handle the estate sales on EBAY. Their EBAY seller account----jacklordauc--- is no longer active. I was told in 2012 by another person who bought a lot of material from the estate that she was already familiar in 2007 with the seller and that the seller had sold other celebrity estates previously. The seller was overwhelmed with the number of questions and demands from EBAY buyers, with getting items shipped in a timely manner, with the amount of material from the estate etc. They also refused to speak to anyone on the phone and wanted everything done via email. In personal communications to me they expressed the enormity of the task and the difficulties they were having. They also wanted everything to go through PAYPAL for "paper trail" purposes a … [Click Below for Full Description]

William Shakespeare
London: John Bell. The collection includes all of his major dramatic works, with plates throughout. The first two volumes here are a remarkably comprehensive and broad prolegomena to his works, and offer interesting analysis of Shakespeare from an era where many of his plays were often interpreted differently, both in their production and in their critical reception. They include Mr Pope's Preface, Mr Theobald's Preface, Sir T. Hanmer's Preface, Dr Warburton's Preface, Dr Johnson's Preface, Mr Stevens's Advertisement to the Second Edition, the unattributed essay On The Origin of The English Stage, the text of the Globe's company's License for Acting, a list of the original actors, and extracts from entries of the Stationer's Company, Mr Malone's Chronology, Rowe's Life of Shakespeare, and other fascinating arcana. The subsequent eighteen volumes contain on the plays themselves, along with annotations by Samuel Johnson and George Stevens. These annotations are one of the joys of this particular work, preserving as they do the learned comments of two of 18th century England's foremost scholars in their reading of the plays. From Copac: The general title pages are dated 1788, but the plays have separate pagination and title-pages, with dates 1785, 1786, and 1788. The annotations at the ends of the plays also have separate title-pages all with the date 1787. A landmark in the cultural and critical reception of England's greatest author. Adams, John
Volumes two and three only (of three). [4],451; [2],528,[36]pp. Contemporary calf, gilt morocco labels. All boards present, but front board detached from second volume and rear board detached from third volume. Lightly age-toned. Good. Lacks the first volume. In a half morocco and cloth clamshell case, spine gilt. This set bears the ownership signature of Charles Adams (1770-1800), second son of President John Adams, the author of this work. The second volume bears a presentation inscription from Charles Adams on the front pastedown. There is also an inscription on a front fly leaf of the third volume reading, "Uranian Society from Charles Adams," likely in the hand of another person. Though we cannot be certain, it is quite possible that President Adams himself gave these volumes to his son, Charles. At the age of nine Charles Adams travelled with his father and his older brother, John Quincy, to Europe, returning to America two years later. He graduated from Harvard in 1789 and moved to New York, where his father had assumed the position of George Washington's vice president. Charles lived with his parents for a time when he initially moved to New York, studied law for three years (for a brief period in the office of Alexander Hamilton), established a practice in New York in 1792, and married in 1795. Ultimately, Charles was a disappointment to his father, living a dissolute life and dying of complications of alcoholism at the age of thirty. The Uranian Society, to which these volumes were at some point given by Charles Adams, was a debating society under the auspices of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Front board has been sewn onto binding. No spine label. Leather scraped, light foxing and toning. Early owner names in period ink on ffep and what appears to be a different name (also in period ink) on the title page (see pics). Error in paging: p. 210-216 mis-numbered 110-116 (though an early owner in period ink wrote over the "1" with a "2" on these pages to correct this). Text is complete! Evans 21472. Sabin 88013. Turnbull, I:263. While a 1799 edition is currently available on the market for over $13K, I can find no auction records for the 1788 edition, nor any record of a copy ever offered for sale at a major auction. I also have an incomplete copy of this title (a interleaved Volume One only) available as a separate listing on eBay. Worldcat locates only four copies of this title. Incredibly SCARCE title, again never seen at a major auction. An important item of South Carolina history! Not Ex-Lib. KIPPIS, Andrew.
Beddie 37 (other issue); Forbes 169 (other issue); Sabin 37955 4to (issue ambiguous). First French edition of the first biography of James Cook, "which, despite its many disappointing aspects, should be included in any comprehensive collection" (Davidson). The present copy is in the rarer of two simultaneous issues, without the translator's name on the title-page (this issue not recorded in the literature, though in some descriptions the issue remains ambiguous). Kippis first published his biography in London in 1788 as The life of Captain James Cook. Although it contains some significant errors and is primarily concerned with Cook's naval career, it provides a valuable account of his three voyages, remaining the standard biography until Young's Life and voyages of Captain James Cook (1836). IKippis derived his account of Cook's death at Kealakekua Bay from Samwell's Narrative of the death of Captain James Cook (1786). The appendix contains Helen Maria Williams's ode to Tahiti, "the Morai".The present copy is enhanced with two portraits of Cook, engraved soon after the book's publication. With an occasional minor spot and in the second half an unobtrusive small worm hole in the upper outside corner but still in very good condition and with large margins. The binding is rubbed and the corners and spine damaged, with much of the gold tooling on the spine lost. First French edition of the standard early biography of Captain Cook, with 2 portraits extra added.

John Fauchereaud Grimke & Thomas Pinckney
Philadelphia: : Printed by R. Aitken & Son, at Pope's Head in Market-Street., M.DCC.LXXXVIII. [1788]. FIRST EDITION. viii, 256 pp. Pages interleaved. Volume 1 only. Original leather binding with beautiful gilt title on leather label. Last few pages of text and endpaper loosening. Leather scraped, light foxing and toning. Owner name in period ink on ffep and what appears to be a different name (also in period ink) on the upper right corner of the title page (see pics). Error in paging: p. 210-216 misnumbered 110-116. While one source lists that issued as a 3-volume set, the pagination on this volume does not line up with that set ( that set lists as Vol. 1: viii, 168 p.; v. 2: [2], 169-344 p.; v. 3: [2], 345-510, [2] p.). Could have been that this one was bound as a 2-volume set instead? Evans 21472. Sabin 88013. Turnbull, I:263. While a 1799 edition is currently available on the market for over $13K, I can find no auction records for the 1788 edition, nor any record of a copy ever offered for sale at a major auction. Worldcat locates only four copies of which only one is interleaved as is this copy and that in three rather than four volumes. An interleaved copy, with two blank leaves inserted between each printed leaf; in addition, each volume has a separate printed title page designating Volume I, etc. Incredibly SCARCE title, again never seen at a major auction. An important item of South Carolina history! Not Ex-Lib. I've done my best to describe the book, but if you have additional questions, please don't hesitate to send me an e-mail.

JOHN QUINCY ADAMS
Autograph Letter Signed, to James Bridge, November 21, 1788, Braintree, Massachusetts. 2 pp. "Surrounded by the learning and ingenuity of three thousand years, a mind in the least stimulated by curiosity or ambition cannot complain of the tediousness of time; yet I often wish, I could more effectually . mingle the pleasures of an intercourse with my living friends, to those of a participation in the speculations of the 'mighty dead.'"While a student at Harvard College, John Quincy Adams spent the break between semesters in December 1786 and January 1787 at the college to work on his graduation address for the commencement in July 1787. James Bridge, "whose character as a scholar and a gentleman is inferior to none," according to Adams, remained there as well, and "we agreed to chum together during the vacation." They lived at the College and boarded at Divinity Professor Edward Wigglesworth's home. After they graduated from Harvard College in 1787, both John Quincy Adams and James Bridge studied law with Theophilus Parsons in Newburyport, Massachusetts, from 1787 to 1790. There, they were good friends and roommates. Complete Transcript Braintree Novr 21st 1788.My dear Friend. 3 p.l., [41]-120 pp. (lacking pp. 1-40). 8vo, 19th-century blue pebbled cloth-backed marbled boards (spine a little worn), spine gilt. [Rotterdam: Burgvliet & Bothal, 1788].A very rare sale catalogue, annotated in a contemporary hand with buyers' names, that provides valuable insight into the growing French interest for 17th and 18th century Dutch art and the primary dealers and runners who acted as agents for the voracious collectors of France. The sections of books (303 lots) and coins were not bound in this copy, but the art portion of 863 lots is complete. The contemporary annotations in this copy reveal the names of Dutch dealers and collectors of the day, such as van Dongen, Cremer, Heybroek (likely the son of the consigner), van der Laan, van der Pals, Robbens, Burgvliet, Bothal, etc. Another name which frequently appears is that of Jan (or Jean) Yver (1747-1814), an important art dealer in Amsterdam. With his father, Pierre (or Pieter), who died in 1787, they were two of the earliest Dutch dealers to develop an international clientele, which included Louis XVI, Joshua Reynolds, and Stanislaw Poniatowski, King of Poland, as well as many other members of the European upper class. This sale also came at a time when, thanks to the efforts of the famous dealers Jean Baptiste Pierre Lebrun and Edmé Gersaint before him, the French had developed an almost extreme passion for Northern painting. French dealers, several of whom are named here, exploited this opportunity by purchasing directly at Dutch auctions and then importing them to France. This catalogue descr … [Click Below for Full Description]

The full set comprises of: Volume I: Prolegomena To The Dramatick Writings of Will. Shakespeare Volume II: Prolegomena To The Dramatick Writing … [Click Below for Full Description]

KANT Immanuel
bey Johann Friedrich Hartknoch, 1788. In-8 p. (mm. 218x122), cartonato muto mod., tit. oro su tassello al dorso, pp.num. 292, carattere gotico . Opere Bompiani,II, p. 499. Esemplare marginoso, ben conservato.

MARSDEN, William
1788. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "The most comprehensive book on the largest island of Indonesia!" After spending eight years in Sumatra, William Marsden came back to England in hopes of getting an important job. When he did not, he devoted his time to writing a historical book on the history the island of Sumatra. Shortly after his work was published in 1782, he received accolades from important members of the Royal Society such as Dalrymple, Rennel, Maskelyne, Solander, and Herschel. Marsden then became a member of the Society, thanks to his work. According to Hoefer, Marsden's book shows a proper history, an accurate picture of government, and paints a picture of the manners and laws of the natives to Sumatra. [Attributes: First Edition]

Peltier, dans son Orthopedics, a history and iconography explique « the first physician to approach the treatment of crippled children in a systematic fashion with attention to their social as well as their medical needs in an institutional setting was Jean-André Venel . Bruno Valentin considered him to be « the father of orthopedics » ». - - - - Jean-André Venel (28 May 1740 - 9 March 1791) was a Swiss doctor and a pioneer in the field of orthopedics. Venel was born in Morges, the son of a surgeon, Jean-François Venel. He studied medicine in Montpellier, Paris and Strasbourg, and practised at Orbe and Yverdon; between 1770 and 1775 he was attached to the court of Count Stanis?aw Potocki. Nicholas Andry, in his work Orthopaedia, or the Art of Preventing and Correcting Deformities in Children (English edition 1741), had been the first to use the term "orthopaedia", but Venel is regarded by many as the "father of orthopaedics" because of his development of the practical applications.
