___________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________ENGLISH_DESCRIPTION______________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ Contemporary full green stiff vellum, flat spine, title and volume number in gilt on lettering-pieces. The rare early printing of the U.S. Constitution in Great Britain in its original paper wraps. It is now known that William Godlin wrote not only the History of Henry VIII but also the other parts of the volume which are history. The earlier historian in the annual volumes prior to 1783 were written by Dr. Gilbert Stuart who asked Godwin to finish and continue the series. This was to continue until 1791 which is found in Godwin's journals (Jack W. Marken, "William Godwin's Annual Register" Modern Language Notes, Vol. 68:7, Nov, 1953)). As early as page 95 Arthur St. Clair who was elected President of the Continental Congress on April 17, 1787, addresses the states as "the 13 Independent Sovereign States" (yet on May 25th the Constitutional Convention convened with every state represented except the recalcitrant Rhode Island and instead of noting the independent states are the key opening words We The People). Then, immediately following this report is George Washington's often neglected introduction to the Constitution (p. 99-100) in the Public Papers section. What follows is the very early printing of the U.S. Constitution in Great Britain. Next is Jonathan Penrose's appeal for the abolition of slavery. Throughout the volume which covers the history of the world with the focus on England, France and the United States, we find Thomas Jefferson's "History of the Virginia Mountains" from his Notes on the State of Virginia and references to science from Benjamin Franklin … [Click Below for Full Description]

PETER STUART
(FIRST NATIONS TRIBES). ALS. 1pg. September 5, 1788. Beauport (Quebec City). An autograph letter signed “Peter Stuart” and written to “Messrs. Davidson & Lees”. Stuart was a Quebecois businessman, and his letter concerns debts due to him and his business partners by First Nations tribes. “Gentlemen As you seem to apprehend that in the suit brought by Messrs Tho. Dunn Wm. Grant & myself, for payment of the debts due by the Indians on the posts of the Domain & Mingan an argument may be raised against you from my having ordered the Clerks of the different Posts, On the Commencement of the new lease to bring to the debit of the different Indians, the amot. of the debt due to the Old Compy I think it Justice to declare that such entries were made in the Books by my Orders, with out your knowledge, which I did not think necessary to inform you of till lately. And in Justice to the old Compy, I thought it equitable that the am’ts should be recpt so as the said amot. could not be paid but to the New Compy at the same time I never understood or intended that any order given by me for the benefit of the old Compy in which I was aparty, and for whom I then acted, could have any effect on the New Compy who were ignorant of such orders…Peter Stuart”. Peter Stuart, Thomas Dunn, and William Grant together owned substantial amounts of land on the Mingan Archipelago in Quebec. This area has historically been home to Innu (First Nations) groups, who now have a reservation there. This probably accounts for the mentions for “debts due by the Indians”. The letter is in very … [Click Below for Full Description]

First edition. (4), xvi, 383, (1); (4), 259, (1); (4), 292; (4), 366 pp. 4 vols. 8vo. Mazzei emigrated to America from Italy in 1773 and introduced the cultivation of grapes and olives to the United States. He became a neighbor of Jefferson in Virginia, settling near Monticello at Jefferson's request, and this association led to their long friendship and the author's acquaintance with Franklin and Adams. A staunch Republican, Mazzei took an active role in the Independence movement. In this work he outlines the history of the American colonies, the causes of the Revolution, and the economy and government of the United States. Also discussed are Indians, slavery, emigration, and the Society of the Cincinnati. The book was a contemporary success and remains an important work which Malone characterizes as "probably the most reliable of all the works of the period on the United States" (Thomas Jefferson 2:109-110). Jefferson aided Mazzei in the compilation of the work while acting as American minister in Paris. TENON, [Jacques René].
FIRST EDITION. G&M 1600. Tenon's major monograph on the hospitals of Paris, in which he described the appalling conditions prevailing there, resulted in rapid reforms being made. He had wanted to achieve this for forty years, and when the King commissioned him to report on the hospitals of Paris, he did so in great detail. Contemporary with Howard in England, Tenon was the most important of the early French hospital reformers, and was instrumental in founding a special hospital for children. See Garrison p. 400. JONES, Sir William.
FIRST EDITION. "This slim paper, read to the Bengal Asiatic Society in 1786 and published in its Transactions, marks a turning-point in the history of linguistics and signalled the birth of comparative philology... "In 1786 Jones made his epoch-making discovery of the relationship between the Sanskrit, Gothic, Greek and Latin languages -- to which he later, erroneously, thought he could add Egyptian. His clear understanding of the basic principles of scientific linguistics provided the foundation on which Rask, Bopp and Grimm built the imposing structure of comparative Indo-European studies" (PMM). Jones (1746-1794)had established his reputation as an orientalist by his Grammar of the Persian language (1771). In 1783 he was knighted and appointed a judge of the high court in Calcutta, the administrative seat of the East India Company, an office he held until his death. Here he indulged in his oriental studies, founded the Asiatic Society of Bengal, of which he was president, and edited its journal. The first paper in this, the first volume of its journal, is "A dissertation on the orthography of Asiatick words in Roman letters", also by Jones, with 7 plates. Printing and the Mind of Man 235. The London reprint of this journal is common, but this original edition, printed in Calcutta, is much scarcer. Neither Jones's name nor the title of his paper are given on its first page.

RUMSEY, James.
FIRST EDITION (but see below), first impression with uncorrected title, of this incunable of steam navigation. During the 1780s James Rumsey and John Fitch each invented a steam-powered boat, Rumsey's propelled by jets of water through the stern and Fitch's by paddles. Fitch obtained a privilege for the manufacture of steam vessels, but Rumsey claimed priority for his steamboat, patented in 1791. These two vessels were the first successful steamboats in America. Although neither was financially successful, Fitch went on to inaugurate the first commercial steamboat service, on the Delaware River in 1790, which was, however, rather short-lived. Rumsey and Fitch never put aside their differences, but through their bitter rivalry they helped to bring an end to the patchwork state patent system, which was replaced by the first federal patent act in 1790. The Short Treatise includes a chronology of events, an explanation of the technical operation of the vessel, and affidavits. According to the "Advertisement" on the verso of the title, Rumsey states that this paper is reprinted with corrections and additions from "a pamphlet published in Virginia", of which "a few copies were then thought sufficient". However, neither Sabin nor ESTC records that pamphlet. Norman, citing NUC, states that it was reprinted from Rumsey's A plan wherein the power of steam is fully shewn (Philadelphia, 1788), but that is not recorded by ESTC either. Rink suggests that an edition was printed at Richmond. Rink, Technical Americana, 2925. Norman Catalogue 185 (issue with corrected title). Not in EST … [Click Below for Full Description]

JONES, Philip.
FIRST EDITION. Philip Jones's monograph on distortions of the spine was probably the third in England, after Percivall Pott in 1779 and Timothy Sheldrake in 1783. He worked closely with the Hunters, attending William Hunter's anatomical lectures (the portrait shows him holding a copy of "Minutes of Anatomical Lectures"), and working with him on occasions. He had many patients referred to him by John Hunter, and included in the book a facsimile letter of approbation from him. Two of the specimens illustrated in the plates are from William Hunter's museum.

MARTIN, Benjamin.
Fourth and last edition, expanded from the rare first edition of 1747 published at Reading, which was itself a greatly expanded version of his Course of Lectures in Natural and Experimental Philosophy (1743), written when he was trying to earn a living by giving lectures and demonstrations on Newtonian experimental philosophy similar to those given in London for many years by J. T. Desaguliers. Martin was one of the best known of the many popularisers of science of his day, and one of the first true retailers in the scientific instruments trade, holding an astonishingly large and varied stock. Lagrange's masterpiece was an extension on Newton's work on mechanics. In it he moulded theoretical mechanics into a system from which fundamental equations describing the motions of any systems of bodies could be derived. To achieve this Lagrange combined the principle of virtual velocities with d'Alembert's principle. He thereby set down the principle of virtual velocities as applied to mechanics. In his preface, Lagrange draws attention to the absence of diagrams in the book, which he believed the lucidity of his own presentation had rendered superfluous. "With the appearance of the Mechanique Analitique in 1788, Lagrange proposed to reduce the theory of mechanics and the art of solving problems in that field to genera … [Click Below for Full Description]
