1788. Intérieur des volumes frais. Charnière inférieure du tome 1 fendue sur 8 cm. Accroc sur le plat du tome 2. Quelques éraflures et menus accidents. SMITH (Adam) (1723-1790).
London: G.G.J. and J. Robinson, 1788. Second Edition. Hardcover. Very good. 2 vols.: xii, 418; iv, 500, [15] p. 22 cm. 5 engraved fold-out plates, including 2 maps. 1. Full tree-calf leather. Corners lightly bumped. Vol. 2. Small dent on bottom of rear board in vol. 1 as well as a bit of soiling to lower edge of text block. Vol. 2 has large horizontal tear in p. 327, chip in third plate, and dampstains to front pastedown and inner margins of first pages. Paper bright and clean. Title continues: "Containing The present Natural and Political State of those Countries, their Productions, Arts, Manufactures, and Commerce; with Observations on the Manners, Customs, and Government of the Turks and Arabs." Volney (1757-1820) was a well-travelled, learned man. He embarked on a journey to the Near East in late 1782 and spent nearly seven months in Ottoman Egypt. Afterwards, he lived for nearly two years in Greater Syria in what is today Lebanon and Israel in order to learn Arabic. He returned to France in 1785 where he spent the following two years compiling his notes and writing these volumes. He continued to travel in later years, being expelled from the U.S.A. as a suspected spy in 1797. It seems his life was always an adventure, for he narrowly escaped the guillotine during the French Revolution. Of interest in these well-preserved volumes is the account given of the Arabic press at the convent of Marhanna (vol. 2 pp. 190-191) with a catalogue of books printed there (p. 196). On the macabre side is the extensive discussion of diseases prevalent in Egypt, including smallbox, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Trapaud, Elisha
London John Stockdale, 1788. First edition, 8vo, pp.(iii)-vi, (7)-34, [6], 12, [1], [1, blank], frontispiece, 2 folding maps. A very good copy in contemporary wrappers, original paper label on spine. Bound without half-title. Early stamp with coronet of the Holstein-Holsteinborg library to title-page. The first book on British Malaya, published two years after the British flag was raised on the island of Penang. Elisha Trapaud was both a captain in the Madras Engineers and a talented amateur artist; he accompanied Francis Light on his mission to Penang in 1786, and was an eyewitness to the foundation of the British colony, producing a sketch of the event. The frontispiece of this work was engraved after Trapaud's sketch, and is of considerable historical importance as the earliest published depiction of Pengang. Our copy includes the Plan of the Strait within Puloo Pinang by Captain James Scott, published by Dalrymple in 1786. Emmanuel Bowen
Vienna: Gestochen von J. Stenger, 1788. One sheet (of 4), approx. 23" x 26-1/2", lightly hand-colored in outline; fine. This is the upper left part of the 4-sheet map of North America (sheet no. 21), featuring the northwestern part of North America, and includes an inset map of Baffin and Hudson Bay: "Specialkarte von der Baffin und Hudsons Bai." Includes descriptive and historical notes throughout the map. Shows boundaries, forts, roads, mines, and Indian villages and tribal territory. This is a German-language edition of the 4-sheet map of North America first brought out by Emmanuel Bowen and John Gibson in London about 1775; the engraver Franz Anton Schraembl has apparently based it on one of the states of 1777 or later. The four sheets are numbered 20-23, and this particular sheet is no. 21 showing the Mississippi Basin as far south as Natchez, the Great Lakes (except Ontario), and west to California.

Inscribed 'Mr Wood' on the reverse, it belonged to, and was presumably compiled by, Lieutenant John Wood, 1766â€"1820, who served in the Pomona from May 1788 to July 1790, and who is named as the officer responsible for delivering the Act and mustering the slaves in 21 of the instances listed here. The first of her four published translations into English and appearing only a year after her Thoughts on the education of daughters (London, 1787) was issued, also by Joseph Johnson, Wollstonecraft completed this work apparently on her own initiative after reading the French original (also London, 1788). Grosier, Jean-Baptiste-Gabriel-Alexandre
London: G.G.J. and J. Robinson, 1788. First edition in English. Two volumes, 8vo (21 x 13.5 cm), pp.vii, [1, blank], xvi, 582, folding map coloured in outline; viii, 524, 15 engraved plates, 1 folding. Bound in 19th-century diced calf by Martin of Calcutta. All edges marbled. Hinge of first volume cracked but holding. Second volume's spine with crack along lower joint and damage at top; some marks to calf. Title of first volume reinforced, one early paper repair to map. A handsome set. The first English edition of Grosier's account of China, done from the first illustrated French edition of 1787. Jean-Baptiste-Gabriel-Alexandre Grosier (1743-1823) first published his account in 1785. Grosier aimed to produce an impartial account of China and Chinese history for a European audience, and rebut other European accounts more interested in the salacious and exotic than facts. The author compiled a history of the country up to 1780, selecting judiciously from missionary accounts and earlier European histories. His text also provides much on the country's natural history, with substantial notes on ginseng and water lilies. There are long sections on law, government, religion, and medicine. Dublin: Printed for Messrs D. Williams, Colles, White, Byrne, Lewis, Jones, and Moore, 1788. Dublin: Printed for Messrs D. Williams, Colles, White, Byrne, Lewis, Jones, and Moore,, 1788. Shewing the Impolicy of the Present Legal Restraints on the terms of Pecuniary Bargains. In a series of letters to a friend. To which is added, a letter to Adam Smith, Esq; LL, D. On the Discouragements opposed by the above Restraints to the Progress of Inventive Industry. Octavo (162 x 100 mm). Contemporary calf, rebacked to style, brown morocco label. Ownership inscription of the economic historian R. H. Tawney. Bookplate of Earl of Portarlington to front pastedown. Boards with some surface abrasion, scuffed and worn; internally fine. First Irish edition, originally published in London in 1787, published in Dublin in the year when a debate on the reduction of the rate of interest (from 6 to 5 percent) was being held in the Irish parliament. The Defence of Usury was written during Bentham's stay in Russia, and takes the form of letters to a friend from "Crichoff, in White Russia". The work expounds the characteristic Benthamite economic principle that no adult of sound mind acting freely and aware of the circumstances, should be hindered from making any bargain that he sees fit to make; it is thus "an attempt to out-Smith Smith" in hostility to state intervention in economic life (Ross Harrison in The New Palgrave I, 228). "The Monthly Review, spoke of the book as 'a gem of the finest water' while Adam Smith pronounced it to be the work of a superior man, adding that he thought the aut … [Click Below for Full Description]

Absolutely guaranteed to originate from the estate of Jack Lord ! Bought directly from the estate in 2007 on EBAY and I have the First Hawaiian Bank COA to prove it. ABOUT THE JACK LORD ESTATE Some things about how the estate was handled----First Hawaiian bank was the executor of the estate or at the very least they were commissioned to dispose of Jack and Marie Lord's personal belongings and I believe the proceeds were donated to some designated charity. The bank hired a woman in CA who was already an established EBAY seller to handle the estate sales on EBAY. Their EBAY seller account----jacklordauc--- is no longer active. I was told in 2012 by another person who bought a lot of material from the estate that she was already familiar in 2007 with the seller and that the seller had sold other celebrity estates previously. The seller was overwhelmed with the number of questions and demands from EBAY buyers, with getting items shipped in a timely manner, with the amount of material from the estate etc. They also refused to speak to anyone on the phone and wanted everything done via email. In personal communications to me they expressed the enormity of the task and the difficulties they were having. Please see description for more details. AS IS. A CRITICAL EXAMINATION OF THE MARQUIS DE CHATELLUX'S TRAVELS IN NORTH AMERICA - 1789 Anti-Slavery Abolition Product Description A Critical Examination of the Marquis de Chatellux's Travels in North America... by Jacques-Pierre Brissot de Warville Title continues: "...in a letter addressed to the Marquis; principally intended as a refutation of his opinions concerning the Quakers, the Negroes, the people, and mankind." This pamphlet is an impassioned editorial criticizing one aspect of a book by François Jean de Beauvoir, Marquis de Chastellux (1734-1788). The Marquis had served in the American Revolutionary War, and upon his return wrote extensively about his experience. According to the author J.P. Brissot (1754-1793), Beauvoir spoke with a harsh bias against: 1) the Quakers for being gloomy, insipid, churlish and amoral; 2) the African American slaves as not human enough to understand and feel badly about their predicament, and 3) the American people in general as something less than even the French peasants for their affectations and government. A notable portion of the pamphlet addresses the fundamental immorality of slavery, particularly based on skin color. 89 pages. 5.5 x 8.75 inches. This pamphlet has been beautifully and expertly bound, mimicking common practices from the late 18th century. The pamphlet itself has a newly sewn binding, with matching end pape … [Click Below for Full Description]
