The Renowned History of Primrose Prettyface. Who by her Sweetness of Temper, & Love Of Learning, was raised from being the Daughter of a poor Cottager, to great Riches, and the Dignity of Lady of the Manor

London: J Marshall & Co An exceptionally rare early copy of this scarce story for children. Undated but circa 1788. First published in 1781, there is only one copy of the first edition noted. This copy is classed as 'fair' because there is wear to the binding; there is stain to the page edges and side margin; and the frontispiece is supplied in facsimile (although, worryingly, it is not that easy to tell). In the original dutch floral boards with a new matching cloth spine, and cloth case for preservation. There is a signature - Miss C Darell August 1789 to the front pastedown. New free endpapers. Engraved title page states that the book was priced at 6d in gift paper, 9d bound in Red. With 31 woodcuts in the text (in addition to the frontispiece) - the woodcut on p74 shows Lady Worthy weeping - further evidence that this is a very early edition. 88 pp plus 4 pp of advertisements at the rear and an advert for the Juvenile Magazine on the rear pastedown. Other than the stain mentioned above, this copy is nice and clean with clear woodcuts. Please enquire if you would like to see more images.

AN ESSAY ON THE SLAVERY AND COMMERCE OF THE HUMAN SPECIES PARTICULARLY THE AFRICAN. Translated from a Latin Dissertation which was honoured with the First Prize in the University of Cambridge for the year 1785.

Printed and Sold by J Phillips,London,1788.The Second Edition Revised and Considerably Enlarged. - 8vo.pp.xxiv + 167 + 1 page cat.Bound in half calf, raised bands, marbled boards.Very Good. In 1785 Cambridge University held an essay competition with the title: "Is it rights to make men slaves against their wills?" Clarkson had not considered the matter before but after carrying out considerable research on the subject submitted his essay. Clarkson won first prize and was asked to read his essay to the University Senate. On his way home to London he had a spiritual experience. He later described how he had "a direct revelation from God ordering me to devote my life to abolishing the trade."Clarkson contacted Granville Sharp , who had already started a campaign to end the slave-trade. In 1787 Clarkson and Sharp formed the Society for the Abolition of the Slave Trade . Of the twelve members on the committee, nine were Quakers. Influential figures such as John Wesley and Josiah Wedgwood gave their support to the campaign. Later they persuaded William Wilberforce the MP for Hull , to be their spokesman in the House of Commons . Thomas Clarkson was given the responsibility of collecting information to support the abolition of the slave trade. This included interviewing 20,000 sailors and obtaining equipment used on the slave-ships such as iron handcuffs, leg-shackles, thumb screws, instruments for forcing open slave's jaws and branding irons. In 1787 he published his pamphlet, A Summary View of the Slave Trade and of the Probable Consequences of Its Abolition. Clarkson was a brilliant writer and Jane Austen who completely disagreed with his views on slavery, was so impressed with his writing style that she claimed after reading one of his books that she was "in love with its author".

Martin & Walter I, 428 ; inconnu de Tourneux. Quérard II, 442. [Attributes: First Edition]

Ichtyologie. or more info about this item, see our RARE FISH BOOKS site.

      - Panckoucke, Paris, 1788. First and only Edition. Quarto (294 x 221 mm), LVI, 215 and 102 plates. Contemporary leather binding of full mottled dark-brown sheep. Five raised bands on spines with gilt lettering and elaborately gilt decorations. Second compartment with dark-brown label reads Encyclopedie, Tom. 130. Fourth compartement with black label reads Histoire Naturelle. Poissons. All edges yellow-green. Colourful marbled pastedowns, front and endpapers. Covers and hinges slightly rubbed. Most copies of Bonnaterre's work are issued with paper boards. These copies are, in general, in a very poor state of preservation. The present copy is made by a contemporary binder, who maintained the high standards in hand work. An exceptionally well preserved and handsome copy with all plates in top condition. Provenance: Small modest stamp with Herzoglich Lichtenberg Naturaliencabinett on title page. Bonnaterre (1752 -1804), a priest in the Rouergue and professor at the central school of Rhodes, had been assigned by the publisher Panckoucke to contribute to the Encyclopédie méthodique, dealing with mammals, birds, reptiles, fishes and insects. He composed an extensive text for the part on fishes and availed himself of the works of most of the earlier authors and collected drawings of more than 400 species. He copied many of the drawings by Bloch (1784-1788) and when these were not available he took them from the works of Gouan (1770), Broussonet (1782), Pennant (1767) and others. When these authors failed him he even returned to the classics like Willughby (1743), Rondelet (1554), Salviani (1554-1558) and Piso (1648). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Defence of Usury.

Dublin: Printed for Messrs D. Williams, Colles, White, Byrne, Lewis, Jones, and Moore,, 1788. Shewing the Impolicy of the Present Legal Restraints on the terms of Pecuniary Bargains. In a series of letters to a friend. To which is added, a letter to Adam Smith, Esq; LL, D. On the Discouragements opposed by the above Restraints to the Progress of Inventive Industry. Octavo (160 x 95 mm). Contemporary speckled sheep, gilt banded spine, later red morocco label, pale green edges. A few scratches and marks to binding, minute paper flaw in blank fore-corner of first few leaves. A very good copy complete with the half-title. First Dublin edition, originally published in London in 1787, and issued in Dublin in the year when a debate on the reduction of the rate of interest (from 6 to 5 per cent) was being held in the Irish parliament. The work expounds the characteristic Benthamite economic principle that no adult of sound mind acting freely and aware of the circumstances, should be hindered from making any bargain that he sees fit to make; it is thus "an attempt to out-Smith Smith" in hostility to state intervention in economic life (Ross Harrison in The New Palgrave I, 228).

Christian von Mechel, Basel 1788 - The First Illustrated Art Museum CataloguePigage, Nicolas de (1723-96) and Christian von Mechel (1737-1817). . . Oblong folio. xiv, [2], 34, [2], 28, [2], 52, [2], 42, [2], 28, [2], 44pp. 30 engraved plates with guards, numbered A – D and I – XXVI, engraved vignettes. Basel: Chez Chrétien de Mechel & chez Mrs. les Inspecteurs des Galeries Électorales à Dusseldorff & à Mannheim, 1778. 286 x 368 mm. 18th century sheep, rebacked preserving original gilt spine, light wear to corners. Stain on plate XII also slightly affecting plate XIII, otherwise very good. Engraved armorial bookplate of Thomas Munro (1819-1901); later bookplate of Peter and Linda Murray, bookseller’s ticket of R. C. Stanes, Chelmsford. First Edition. "A revolutionary step in the history of museums, museum publications, and the art book" (Gaehtgens and Marchesano, p. 33). La galerie électorale de Dusseldorff, an illustrated catalogue of the magnificent art collection of Carl Theodor, Elector of Bavaria (1724-99), was the first publication to contain both illustrations and detailed descriptions of the artwork being recorded; "no other text describing in great depth the individual paintings in a gallery’s collection existed at the time" (ibid.). The Elector’s collection of Italian and Flemish paintings, including a large group by Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640), and other important paintings byVandyk, Giordano,Tintoretto, Carracci, Veronese, Raphael, Corregio, Rembrandt and Reni, were reproduced in the catalogue by engravings showing the paintings in situ on the walls of the Dusseldorf gallery. These engravings, sumptuously printed on thick paper, illustrated the gallery’s innovative approach to staging its paintings: Not only did the gallery abandon the practice of hanging paintings frame-to-frame, "allowing them to preserve their identity as works of art in the space," but "the principle of hanging paintings in a gallery according to decorative and representational considerations was abandoned in favor of a system of order determined by the history and significance of the artwork themselves, resulting in a history of art" (Gaehtgens and Marchesano, p. 31). The Elector’s gallery can thus be seen as an important ancestor of the modern museum, and its catalogue as a forerunner of the modern museum catalogue. The alle- gorical frontispiece (plate A) by Nicolas Guibal includes a portrait of Prince Elector Johann Wilhelm von der Pfalz, the founder of the art collection.

Letter from the Cape of Good Hope in the London Chronicle

London: sold by T. Wilkie, 1788. Front cover rubbed with slight loss of lettering at the centrefold, otherwise very good.. Folio, eight pages measuring 220 x 290 mm. This issue of the London Chronicle dated 26-29 April 1788 contains a brief but informative dispatch from an unidentified First Fleet officer penned at the Cape of Good Hope and dated November 7 1787. Although the extract is succinct, this issue of the Chronicle represents a very early printing of news relating to the First Fleet, and effectively relays news of the Fleet en-route (although published after the landing and official settlement of New South Wales). A good sense of the primacy of newspaper printings such as this example is given by the fact that news from Botany Bay in book form (namely the "Officer" account and Watkin Tench) appeared in early April the following year. The passage is captioned "Extract of a Letter from an Officer in the Botany Bay Fleet, dated Cape of Good Hope, Nov. 7, 1787". The single paragraph does not give any direct clues as to its author, but is the work of someone senior enough to know that the plan had changed and that they no longer planned to make landfall at remote Kerguelen Island, a change which "will in some degree shorten the dismal length of passage we have yet to encounter". It is possible that the letter was written by a medical officer, as the author records a total of 12 dead since the departure from England.

LE PRÉFET APOSTOLIQUE, AUX COLONS DE L'ISLE DE FRANCE [caption title]

Isle de France: Imprimerie Royale, 1788. Folio. Moderate wear and soiling, small hole in center of sheet, affecting a few letters of text. Good. Early and unrecorded imprint from the colonial press at the French colony of Mauritius, also known as the Ile de France. The text contains the articles for establishing a Bureau de Charité for the island. The Dutch were the first Europeans to become interested in the island, taking possession in 1598. After exploiting the island's dense forests for a century and introducing the cultivation of sugar cane and cotton, in 1710 the Dutch abandoned the colony. The French soon claimed it as "Ile de France," and the island remained under the control of the French East India Company until 1767. During the long war between France and England at the beginning of the 19th century, Mauritius proved to be an important strategic naval base. The British took charge of the island in 1810, and the Treaty of Paris confirmed official British possession in 1814. It remained an important sugar producing colony, and in the 20th century agricultural production was expanded to include tea, rice, and other produce. Printing began on Mauritius in 1768. During the French period, until 1810, only about 400 imprints were produced, mostly in the form of official documents and newspapers, though there are also almanacs and a few other items. All are quite rare. No copies located in OCLC, and not recorded by Toussaint in his bibliography of Mauritius imprints.

Paris Cuchet 1788 - Two volumes 8vo (20 x 13 cm). Half-title, title, XVI, 328 (but actually 330; mistake in the pagination after p. 240), [2]pp.; half-title, title, [2], 384, [6] pp.; very occasional light spotting, light waterstain in vol. 2, mostly marginal. Contemporary calf, flat spine decorated in gilt, brown morocco labels lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers; a bit rubbed, especially at corners, head and tails restored. The earliest European work on the Zaporozhian Cossacks. Rare on the market: we could not trace any copy selling at auction in the last 35 years. Jean-Benoît Scherer (1741-1824), a German and French historian who spent some time in Saint-Petersburg as an attaché in the French embassy, rightly notes that the history of the Ukrainian Cossacks "is more celebrated than known" and even a list of the cossacks' hetmans, i.e. leaders, is not known to be available. Thus, in his work Scherer attempts to acquaint the European public with the history of the Ukrainian Cossacks from the times of their formation to the annihilation of the Zaporozhskaya Sech by Catherine II in 1775. The text is largely Scherer's translation of the local chronicles supplemented with the author's clarifying notes where necessary. The first volume provides an overview of the history of the Cossacks, focusing solely on the Ukrainian speaking and the Zaporozhian Cossacks, their organization, customs and way of life, while the second volume describes history of the Cossacks' leaders and provides translations of the texts of some important treaties.

Leipzig, Weidmann, 1788. Sheridan entered Parliament in 1780, crowning his previous career as a successful playwright and theatre manager with a long and distinguished record of public service. He originally read the main portion of this statement before the House of Commons as part of the debate, after noticing that the gentlemen discussing the two bills in question appeared not to have paid "any very minute degree of attention" (p. 6) to the details of either one. The texts of both bills are present here, along with Sheridan's analysis of how each would address "the question of right between the public and the [East India] Company" (p. 39). Recent marbled paper–covered boards, front cover with gilt-stamped leather title label and spine with gilt-stamped leather author label. Half-title and several other pages stamped by a now-defunct institution. Pages with edges untrimmed and a few small spots of staining; mostly, clean.
