Edinburgh: Printed By and for the Author; and Sold in London By T, Cadell in the Strand, 1788. Second edition. Engraved frontispiece portrait of William Brodie, and portrait of Smith at p. 226, by John Kay. xxii, [2], 288 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Contemporary calf, red morocco spine label. Rebacked to style. Small closed tear to frontispiece, some offsetting to title-page. Small booklabel of Charles Whibley. Second edition. Engraved frontispiece portrait of William Brodie, and portrait of Smith at p. 226, by John Kay. xxii, [2], 288 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. From "Deacon" Brodie to Jekyll and Hyde. Inscribed "To James Ritchie Esq. from the author." The author, William Creech, was the famous Edinburgh publisher and author - he published the first Edinburgh edition of Robert Burns' Poems. William Brodie, known as Deacon Brodie, was a respectable Edinburgh cabinetmaker who copied his client's house keys to rob them at night. He was the inspiration for R.L. Stevenson's play (wth Henley), "Deacon Brodie, or The Double Life"; the notion of a double life led naturally to Stevenson's great masterpiece, Jekyll & Hyde.

1788 - Bound in red morocco for Charles III of Spain, extremely rare, including both parts. 1788-93. Madrid. Viuda de Ibarra. In 4to (238 mm x 170 mm). 1 [blank] + portrait frontispiece + 3 ff. + xvi + 359 + 4 folding maps & 4 folding tables; 2 ff. + 128 + 1 folding tables and 1 folding map. Contemporary red morocco gilt, with supralibros of Charles III on boards, double-fillet and roll-tooled borders to boards, raised bands to spine with simple tooling, green morocco lettering piece, blue silk endpapers, spots of soiling and very light rubbing, else fine. A very good copy overall, tall and clean, only light occasional marginal damp. 16,000 $ First edition, a fine copy bound in red morocco with the arms of Charles III of Spain, bound post mortem, as the Apendice was printed in 1793 and Charles III died in 1793; normally only the Relacion –and even then is quite rare- is found bound for Charles III, copies with both works bound together with the arms are excessively rare. The fact that even after the King´s death there was a desire to have the book presented with his arms is a testament to the magnitude of the expedition commissioned by the crown, and the respect held for the King. This is considered one of the best descriptions of the Strait of Magellan and the Patagonia of the 18th century. It is based on the scientific explorations undertaken by Captain Antonio de Cordoba on board the frigate Santa Maria de la Cabeza, with the aim of exploring the Patagonia and determine the continuity of use of the Strait for Spanish ships in voyages to the Pacific; the results were negative: “After these expeditions the Spanish trade routes were exclusively to east ports and then overland to the Pacific ports” (Hill). Vargas y Ponce, to whom authorship is normally attributed, used also the journals of lieutenants Galiano and Belmonte, who sailed with Cordoba. In 1793, an Appendix was published “Obra interesante y bien publicada” (Palau); this later part is more of a historical view of former expeditions, including those of Drake and Bougainville. The illustration comprises –between the Relacion and the Apendice- five large folding maps (“Carta reducida del Estrecho de Magallanes”, “Carta Esferica de la parte sur de la América Meridional”, and two multi-inset maps of ports), a frontispiece portrait of Fernando de Magallanes by Selma, and five folding tables. Palau, 352514 and 352514. Sabin, 16765. Hill, 1756. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

THE BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER [and] A COMPANION TO THE ALTAR [with] A NEW VERSION OF THE PSALMS OF DAVID

Edinburgh: printed by the assigns of Alexander Kincaid, 1788, 1785. n. Looking very pretty on the shelf, this is an elegant Edinburgh binding with Neoclassical elements that hint at the influence of James Scott. Working outside the two traditional Scottish geometrical manners of decoration--the so-called "wheel" or "herringbone" styles--Scott (fl. 1773-84) made a significant divergent contribution to British bookbinding, and his work is highly prized. Whoever is responsible for our binding, (s)he has exhibited a measure of Scott's originality, and shows notable subtlety in the facile use of tools.. 178 x 108 mm. (7 x 4 1/4"). [216] leaves. VERY PLEASING CONTEMPORARY SCOTTISH CRIMSON MOROCCO, HANDSOMELY GILT, covers with single fillet outer border and entwined feather and bead gilt roll as inner border, smooth spine panels decorated with gilt curls at corners and one of three large and elegant centerpieces (spider's web within starburst, urn with garland, and urn with stylized bird alighting on its finial), black morocco label, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Verso of first preliminary blank neatly signed in ink by early owner Helen Campbell. Griffiths 1788/9. Upper joint a bit rubbed and flaked, faint soiling to covers, one gathering trivially browned, but an excellent copy, clean and fresh internally, and in a solid binding that still gleams.         A Critical Examination of the Marquis de Chatellux's Travels in North America in a letter addressed to the Marquis; principally intended as a refutation of his opinions concerning the Quakers, the Negroes, the People, and mankind.

Joseph James, Phildaelphia, PA 1788 - This pamphlet has been beautifully and expertly bound, mimicking common practices from the late 18th century. The pamphlet itself has a newly sewn binding, with matching end papers. These have been lightly pasted into a cardstock wrapping, as was a common practice at the time. Those few who could afford to own books often purchased the printed portion of the book in one location, which was in turn leather-bound to match the rest of their library. This very scarce pamphlet might have once been part of a larger bound collection of pamphlets. This pamphlet is an impassioned editorial criticizing one aspect of a book by François Jean de Beauvoir, Marquis de Chastellux (1734-1788). The Marquis had served in the American Revolutionary War, and upon his return wrote extensively about his experience. In it, Brissot claims, he spoke out with a harsh bias against the Quakers for being gloomy, insipid, churlish and amoral, the African American slaves as not human enough to understand and feel badly about their predicament, and the American people in general as something less than even the French peasants for their affectations and government. A notable portion of the pamphlet addresses the fundamental immorality of slavery, particularly based on skin color. New professional binding, using a reproduction card stock cover, and matching pastedowns. Title block on gray wraps is an aged copy of the pamphlet's title page. Interior is free of writing and intentional marks. Inside pages are tanned, with light scattered foxing and some smudges. Occasional tiny chip or tear or crease to interior page edge. Stored in a plastic sleeve for safe keeping and preservation. Book may exhibit additional minor signs of age or wear. 89 pages. 5.5 x 8.75 inches. Postage for oversized and international shipping will be calculated by size and weight. AbeBooks shipping quotes are ESTIMATES only.         Aurelii prudentii Clementis V.C. Opera omnia nunc primum cum codd. Vaticanis collata praefatione, variantibus lectionibus, notis, ac rerum verborumque indice locupletissimo aucta et illustrata.

Parmae: Ex Regio typographeo 4to (31.5 cm, 12.5"). 2 vols. I: [12], 71, [1], 302, [2], [303]–61, [3] pp. II: [4], 215, [1], 219–84, [2] pp. (text complete despite pagination).. 1788 First edition of Prudentius from the Bodoni press. Prudentius (348 – ca. 410) was a Roman Christian poet born in Northern Spain, known for the asceticism he adopted late in life as well as for his lyric (Cathemerinon, Peristephanon), didactic (Apotheosis, Hamartigenia, Psychomachia), and polemical works (Contra Symmachum). The Psychomachia is particularly notable as one of the earliest Western examples of allegorical verse, exerting much influence on the subsequent medieval development of that genre. This is a typically handsome Bodoni production with wide margins, an elegant type, and a different engraved vignette on each title-page; Dibdin calls it “one of the most beautiful editions of a classical author I ever beheld.” Recent half vellum and paper–covered sides, vellum edges graced with gilt single fillet, spines with gilt-stamped leather title and volume labels and with gilt-stamped Greek key design; binding discolored and a little bubbled from proximity to fire. Edges untrimmed, signatures unopened; vol. I with surprisingly various old waterstaining, sometimes faint and sometimes not, in upper margins of first half and outer margins of last few leaves. Interior of both volumes otherwise clean, with no markings, save that the endpapers are smudged and those untrimmed edges, plus occasional small areas of margin contiguous, are darkly smokestained from that fire. => This is a book that has suffered, yet a production that is still as lovely as Dibdin said it was and a set well worth having.

The Works of James Thomson [inscribed] 'W.M Rossetti from Christina's Books 1894' [&] 'Frances M.L. Polidori from her Aunt Harriet Nov.br 26th 1823'

London: A Strahan for J Rivington and Sons, 1788 Book. Very Good. Full-Leather. Signed by Author(s). [3 volumes] Christina Rossetti's set of the poet James Thomson's works. Bound in tree calf and rebacked to style with reinforcement to the inner hinges, the three volumes have an impeccably chronicled provenance. The first owner 'Harriet Pierce' has recorded her ownership on the title page of each of the three volumes. Pierce was the English aunt of Frances Polidori, sister of Byron's physician John William Polidori who wrote The Vampyre. Frances has recorded the gift of the books on the first blank of each volume thus: 'Frances M.L. Polidori from her Aunt Harriet Nov.br 26th 1823'. At the time of her aunt's gift Frances was shortly to be married to the Italian exile Gabriele Rossetti (the books may have been a wedding present) with whom she had several children including the artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti, the writer William Michael Rossetti and her youngest child, the poet Christina Rossetti who was born four years after her mother received these volumes from 'Granny Pierce' as the children would come to know her. In due course these books entered Christina's collection and the final inscription by her brother William Michael Rossetti records that fact after Christina's death, appearing on Volume I only: 'W.M Rossetti from Christina's books 1894'. Evidently Christina's books were dispersed through her family after her death with these passing to her brother. A number of similarly inscribed volumes entered into the Norman Colbeck collection of nineteenth century and Edwardian poetry and belle lettres now held at the Library of British Columbia. A fascinating copy..

Shakspere's Works. Bells Edition Vols: 1,4,7,9,12,16,17,18,19,20. (Signed By M Darwin, C Darwins Sister Given By M Congreve, Darwin Family Friend)

John Bell, British Library, Strand, London 1788 - HB Brown leather bound. Black leather publisher name at bottom of spine. Red leather frames with titles and gilt flourishes + vol nos on spine. Unfortunately I only have 10 volumes of the original 20. These being 1: Prolegomena. 4: Merry Wives of Windsor. Much Ado About Nothing. 7: Merchant of Venice. 9: Twelth Night. Winter's Tale. 12: King Henry IV Part 2. King Henry V. 14: King Henry VI Part 3. King Richard III. 16: Julius Caesar. Antony and Cleopatra. 18: Hamlet. Titus Andronicus. 19: Troilus and Cressida. Othello. 20: Cymbeline. Romeo. Each volume has coloured marble effect e/ps. b/w engraved frontis, b/w engravings and illusts. 'With Notes of all the various Commentators'. Each is 14.7 x 9.5 cm. Width varies according the number of pages. Apart from being a very early edition, what is exciting is that on the opening page of Vol 1 is written in period ink handwriting: 'M. Darwin left her by Mifs M. Congreve June 1808'. All the following volumes have M Darwin handwritten in o/p. M. Darwin = Marianne Darwin 1798-1858 who was the elder sister of Charles Darwin. The M.Congreve that she mentions is Mary Congreve. The Congreve family were close friends of the Darwins and Mary and her sister Sarah Adelaide Congreve were regular correspondents of Charles Darwin. So although only part of the set, very interesting provenance! Condition: Lovely as a partial set as they are, a piece of history! Pieces of leather missing, rubbed worn. Some pages browning + age spots. However, they are still here and perfectly readable. Surprisingly the binding remains quite firm. If need be, with some good professional restoration they would undoubtedly be improved visually. Anyway, a great piece of history handled by historical personalities! [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Pp. (ii), xxiv, 298, errata (1) ; (ii), x, 303, errata (1). Contemporary sprinkled calf, spines gilt ruled in compartments with red and green morocco title labels. Bookplate (Sir Edmund Antrobus). First edition.Ferrieres-Sauveboeuf was a French diplomat who for many years travelled throughout the Levant, Persia, Arabia and Caucasia including several visits to Constantinople. He was fluent in Turkish and Persian. His account is rich with information of the countries, people, characters, religion, etc. and mainly based on his own observations. Further he records much details about the Turkish-Russian war of 1788-9. He was engaged to undertake secret missions in the area under the ministry of Vergennes who earlier had been French ambassador to the Porte (from 1755). It might explain his loyalty to Vergennes and the vitriolic attacks against Comte de Choiseul Gouffier who was the ambassador in Constantinople at the time (1784-91). Atabey 428 (second ed.).       - Folio, 356 x 270 mm. 2 leaves, notated on a bifolium of 16-staff "B & H Nr. 3. C" music paper. Unpaginated. Recto and verso of first leaf: "Der Soldat. Chamisso." Song for alto voice and piano, with text underlay in German cursive. Parts marked in German ("Alt"; "Klav[ier]). Time signature: C; key signature: 4 flats, for F minor (albeit with final chord on the dominant). Sixty-five measures (10 systems). A draft of the complete song. 2 pp. Notated in pencil, with three barlines doubled in ink.Recto of second leaf: untitled fragment of fugue "Kyrie eleison" for mixed choir (SATB), probably a cappella. Time signature: C; key signature: 2 flats, for G minor. Eighteen measures (4 systems, increasingly sketchy, incomplete). Notated in pencil.Verso of second leaf: untitled fragment of homophonic chorus (SATB) a cappella. Time signature: C; key signature: 5 flats, for D-flat major. Eight completed measures (2 systems), with clefs for 2 more systems indicated (staves blank). Text: "Erinnerung" (Memory) by Joseph von Eichendorff (1788-1857); incipit: "Lindes Rauschen in den Wipfeln." (Soft rustle in the tree tops.). Incomplete. Notated in pencil, with text underlay in a different (more mature) hand.Slightly soiled and creased; some staining to edges; occasional foxing; two small tears to blank edges; lower outer corners slightly creased and chipped; central fold with very small split to both head and tail. Der Soldat is unpublished, but has been recorded (see the article on Furtwängler in German Wikipedia). A fair copy, in ink and bearing a dedication "To my mother on Christmas 1899," is held at the Zurich Central Library (see the Nachlassverzeichnis Wilhelm Furtwängler on the library's website, p. 46). The poem "Der Soldat" (1833) is by Adelbert von Chamisso (1781-1838), after a Danish original (1830) by Hans Christian Andersen (1805-75). Furtwängler set it in full, albeit with minor changes. Although the vocal staff of "Der Soldat" is designated "alto," its range extends from a to a''; "mezzo-soprano" would be a more fitting designation. The poem was also set by others, most famously Robert Schumann (no. 3 of his Five Songs for Voice and Piano, op. 40, 1840). The choral fragments do not belong to any documented works by Furtwängler. The Kyrie may have been a contrapuntal assignment from Anton Beer-Walbrunn, with whom Furtwängler studied from 1899.

Those late statutes are wanted for use of the United States agriably to an Act of Congress. I wish to be informed as soon as may be whether you have them in print, not bound, & can supply me with thirteen sets of them." In addition to marking his place in history with his signature on the Declaration of Independence, Huntington also served as president of the Continental Congress, and was the third governor of Connecticut, serving for ten years, until his death in 1796.

Contemporary calf, gilt ornamented spines in 6 compartments with red and green gilt lettered labels (spine of first and third volume with some repair). First edition, first issue with the very rare supplement by the author's son Carl Friedrich Gaertner. The first volume is dedicated to Joseph Banks. The work is a taxonomic landmark and many of the seeds and fruits derive from Cook's first voyage and from the collection of Sir Joseph Banks. "In 1778 he (Gaertner) was in London, renewing his contact with Joseph Banks, and, as always, hospitably received at the treasure-house in Soho square. Since his first visit, Banks and Solander had made their great trip around the world with Cook on his first voyage (1768-1771). The collections of that trip were liberally made available to Gaertner, who was allowed to take named specimens with him, often of new taxa that had only been provided with manuscript names by Banks and Solander. The same was true of fruits obtained from specimens grown at Kew, among which were plants brought back by Banks and Solander, as well as the first introductions from South Africa by Masson " (F.A. Stafleu. Joseph Gaertner and his Carpologia p. 1). Gaertner incorporated unused material from the East Indies obtained from Leiden, as well as plants from Japan and the Cape given to him by Thunberg.Joseph Gaertner died in 1791 finishing the third part of the second volume up to page 504. The second volume was distributed with 504 pages including an 'Index generum universalis' (pp. 489-504). Carl Friederich Gaertner published the third volume which is very rare and added an 'Index synonymorum' pp. 505-520 to the second volume, which must be considered a second issue of the 2nd volume as many copies were distributed without the second index which was issued a year later in 1792. The title page on the second volume is dated 1791."But Gärtner's theory of the seed is one of his most valuable contributions to the science" (Sachs p. 124). An excellent copy of this famous classic on the morphology of fruits and plant seeds. Its fine and elaborately engraved plates are almost all by the well-known Nürnberg artist J. Sturm.Stafleu & Cowan 1925 & 1921; Hunt 697. [Attributes: First Edition]

The Renowned History of Primrose Prettyface. Who by her Sweetness of Temper, & Love Of Learning, was raised from being the Daughter of a poor Cottager, to great Riches, and the Dignity of Lady of the Manor

London: J Marshall & Co An exceptionally rare early copy of this scarce story for children. Undated but circa 1788. First published in 1781, there is only one copy of the first edition noted. This copy is classed as 'fair' because there is wear to the binding; there is stain to the page edges and side margin; and the frontispiece is supplied in facsimile (although, worryingly, it is not that easy to tell). In the original dutch floral boards with a new matching cloth spine, and cloth case for preservation. There is a signature - Miss C Darell August 1789 to the front pastedown. New free endpapers. Engraved title page states that the book was priced at 6d in gift paper, 9d bound in Red. With 31 woodcuts in the text (in addition to the frontispiece) - the woodcut on p74 shows Lady Worthy weeping - further evidence that this is a very early edition. 88 pp plus 4 pp of advertisements at the rear and an advert for the Juvenile Magazine on the rear pastedown. Other than the stain mentioned above, this copy is nice and clean with clear woodcuts. Please enquire if you would like to see more images.

In 1785 Cambridge University held an essay competition with the title: "Is it rights to make men slaves against their wills?" Clarkson had not considered the matter before but after carrying out considerable research on the subject submitted his essay. Clarkson won first prize and was asked to read his essay to the University Senate. On his way home to London he had a spiritual experience. He later described how he had "a direct revelation from God ordering me to devote my life to abolishing the trade."Clarkson contacted Granville Sharp , who had already started a campaign to end the slave-trade. In 1787 Clarkson and Sharp formed the Society for the Abolition of the Slave Trade . Of the twelve members on the committee, nine were Quakers. Influential figures such as John Wesley and Josiah Wedgwood gave their support to the campaign. Later they persuaded William Wilberforce the MP for Hull , to be their spokesman in the House of Commons . Thomas Clarkson was given the responsibility of collecting information to support the abolition of the slave trade. This included interviewing 20,000 sailors and obtaining equipment used on the slave-ships such as iron handcuffs, leg-shackles, thumb screws, instruments for forcing open slave's jaws and branding irons. In 1787 he published his pamphlet, A Summary View of the Slave Trade and of the Probable Consequences of Its Abolition. Clarkson was a brilliant writer and Jane Austen who completely disagreed with his views on slavery, was so impressed with his writing style that she claimed after reading one of his books that she was "in love with its author".
