Barrois, 1788, 3 tomes in 12, de VII-170pp. 2ff. 130pp. 2ff. 170pp. 2ff. C'est la traduction du roman "the Recess, or a tale of other time " publié à Londres en 1783 et 1785. "The Recess can be regarded as a formative work of the original Gothic, echoing and pre-dating themes from other contemporary Gothic writers." Amyas Griffith (1745 or 6 - 1801), flamboyant poet, playwright and essayist, for a time held the post of Inspector General of Taxes in Munster, from which post he was sacked after opposing the Government at the Carrickfergus elections in 1785, and also the rather more junior post of Surveyor of Belfast. Much of his life, however, was devoted to political commentary and satirical publishing in such outlets as the Stephen's Green Review> (1773). In 1785 he claims to have 'sent my private portable printing press to Carrickfergus to publish squibs'. The final ten years of his life, though, were pretty disastrous for him, with at lest two court actions against him and increasing financial embarrassment. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

First Spanish edition -first printed in Italian during the author´s exile. According to Sabin, the Spanish translation is more complete than the original Italian, with several notes from the translator to the second part. The work deals with the country´s history, costumes, natural history and natives. Illustrated with three folding maps of Chili -two regional and the other including the Coast and handsomely decorated with a cartouche-, a frontispiece with the portrait of the author, three folding tables showing the state of Chili and one folding plan of the parks and fortresses in the border of Arauco. Molina (1740 - 1829) was a Chilean historian, naturalist and Jesuit Priest -entering the Order at 15. The fact that he was born in Chili makes him arguably one of the first Chilean historians born in Chili; after the 1767 expulsion of the Jesuits, he exiled to Bologna, from where his works where published; the later years of his life where his most productive, having being father of a progressive evolutionary theory which gained him an investigation from the Church. Molina, known for his linguistic skills, included a Chilean vocabulary at the end. Palau, 174563. Sabin, 49889.

As biographer Robert Rutland noted, "no other occupant of the White House, not even his distinguished friend [Jefferson], relied so heavily on books to sustain him in his quest for knowledge . . . His books contributed to his fundamental knowledge of the world: how it came into being, what its resources were, and how they might be used to aid mankind."[1]This anonymously-published history is attributed to British diplomat James Harris, the first Earl of Malmesbury, a key diplomatic agent of William Pitt the Younger.[2] (The only alternative suggestion is George Ellis, who served as Harris' secretary on the Hague mission.) Harris served in Spain, Germany, Prussia, and Russia. From 1784 to 1788, he was Britain's envoy-extraordinary to the Hague in Holland, during the Dutch Patriot Revolution and the aftermath of the fourth Anglo-Dutch war. In 1788, Harris negotiated a treaty that formed a triple alliance of Great Britain, the Netherlands, and Prussia, exerting a significant influence on European affairs.During the American Revolution, the Dutch provided America with crucial loans and (mostly secret or indirect) aid. The nominally neutral United Provinces also allowed American and French agents to carry on secret negotiations there. In 1782, the Dutch Republic became only the second country to formally recognize the independence of the United States, and that same year signed a treaty of amity and commerce with the new nation. The effect was not just one-sided. According to this History: "The example of fortunate resistance in the British colonists in America, had an influence on the tempers and sentiments of men all over Europe, but particularly in the United Provinces. There seems to be something individual in the human mind. [which] sometimes produce very extraordinary and unexpected effects. The American war was one of these, which affected many with the vertigo of resistance to the powers legally established, and led them to desire a retrenchment of everything that bore an aspect of the supreme authority in a single person."[3]The Federalist Papers, co-authored by Madison, Alexander Hamilton, and John Jay, was published the same year as this History. The next year, with the inauguration of Washington as president, Madison found himself leading the House of Representatives. Though during that period he is mostly recognized for managing the process of crafting a bill of rights, he also played a major role in the legislation that established the executive departments, including the treasury. When Jefferson returned from France that fall, Madison persuaded his reluctant friend to become Washington's secretary of state, and then was central to the compromise that allowed passage of Hamilton's financial plan in return for re-locating the capital.Madison's and Jefferson's lifelong passion for books was evident not only in their attention to their own libraries, but also in their efforts to create a library for the use of Congress. In 1784, when Jefferson served as America's minister to France, he scoured Paris bookstalls for his own library and for that of Madison, swapping "wish lists." The books that Jefferson sent followed Madison's extensive researches into ancient and modern confederacies and constitutional matters.[4] Crates of books arrived at Montpelier, Madison's Virginia estate.Madison had his library crated and sent from Montpelier to New York when the Federal Congress was in session, and then to Philadelphia and Georgetown as he went from Congress to the State Department and the White House. On visiting Montpelier in the early 180. (See website for full description)

Manuscript on paper, in Spanish. Carta de hidalguia.

Brothers Don Diego, Don Juan, and Don Manuel Berdugo, citizens of Seville and all legitimate children of Agustin Berdugo and Doña Isabel de Torre y Espinal, petitioned on 2 December 1697 for themselves and on behalf of their brothers Don Martin and Don Agustin Berdugo, living in the Indies, to have their status as hidalgos confirmed as represented in this volume (fol. 71r-84v). That confirmation was granted in the town of Arevalo on 4 January 1698 after the usual provision of documentation and the taking of testimony from witnesses. => The brothers living the the New World were in Zacatecas where Martin was the Tesorero Juez of the Royal Treasury and Agustin a captain in the Army. Beginning on 13 January 1700 they began the process of presenting, for authorities in the New World, copies of all of the documents generated in Spain and also offering the testimony of people living in Mexico who could bear witness that they were the Martin and Agustin of the Spanish documents, personally speaking to their nobility, purity of blood, and legitimacy of birth (fol. 85v-140v). => The American resident members of the family are certified as to their nobility on 9 May 1710. Other documents in the volume (especially those before fol. 85) relate to the histories and genealogies of the Berdugo, Avila, Haro, Torre, and Velasco families in Spain, with folios 129 to the end relating to the children and grandchildren of the Mexican Berdugos. => It is discovered in this volume that Don Martin had emigrated to Mexico without the required license to do so and on 31 December 1689 availed himself of a royal indulgence, paid a 30 gold peso fine, and was legitimized in his status in the New World (fols. 64v-66v). Curiously, also copied into this compendium is => the will of Doña Maria de Haro, the widow of Agustin Berdugo (fol. 66v-71r). All documents are certified copies by notaries, and written in a standard public notarial hand liberally and interestingly using => black, blue, red, and gold ink with calligraphic touches. The originals dated from 1652 to 1788. The painted and illuminated Coats of Arms: The volume begins with a full-page accomplishment on => vellum, in full color, of the Berdugo Avila coat of arms. The coats of arms of ancestors that are incorporated therein are found in the text in appropriate places:Berdugo (fol. 8v), Avila (fol. 13r), Haro (16v), and Torre (21v). These are accomplished in => reds, gold, silver, blue, black, and white, and each is followed by a full heraldic explanation of its symbolism and origins. => All of these coats of arms are worthy examples of Mexican Colonial illuminated art on paper and vellum. Binding: Acid-stained Mexican calf (ca. 1790) with single gilt rope roll on periphery of boards; gilt spine extra, no raised bands. Bright blue-striped floral/foliate "wallpaper" pastedowns, all edges red. Provenance: The Berdugo Avila Haro family; in the 20th century in the library of Dirk Stenger of Dusseldorf and then later in the stock of the the Antique Book Shop in Buenos Aires. => New World cartas de hidalguia are much rarer than those done in Spain, and are as yet a little-studied area of Colonial art.

First edition, a fine copy bound in red morocco with the arms of Charles III of Spain, bound post mortem, as the Apendice was printed in 1793 and Charles III died in 1793; normally only the Relacion -and even then is quite rare- is found bound for Charles III, copies with both works bound together with the arms are excessively rare. The fact that even after the King´s death there was a desire to have the book presented with his arms is a testament to the magnitude of the expedition commissioned by the crown, and the respect held for the King. This is considered one of the best descriptions of the Strait of Magellan and the Patagonia of the 18th century. It is based on the scientific explorations undertaken by Captain Antonio de Cordoba on board the frigate Santa Maria de la Cabeza, with the aim of exploring the Patagonia and determine the continuity of use of the Strait for Spanish ships in voyages to the Pacific; the results were negative: "After these expeditions the Spanish trade routes were exclusively to east ports and then overland to the Pacific ports" (Hill). Vargas y Ponce, to whom authorship is normally attributed, used also the journals of lieutenants Galiano and Belmonte, who sailed with Cordoba. In 1793, an Appendix was published "Obra interesante y bien publicada" (Palau); this later part is more of a historical view of former expeditions, including those of Drake and Bougainville. The illustration comprises -between the Relacion and the Apendice- five large folding maps ("Carta reducida del Estrecho de Magallanes", "Carta Esferica de la parte sur de la América Meridional", and two multi-inset maps of ports), a frontispiece portrait of Fernando de Magallanes by Selma, and five folding tables. Palau, 352514 and 352514. Sabin, 16765. Hill, 1756.

FIRST EDITION, CONTEMPORARY OUTLINE COLOUR - The Italian painter and engraver, Giovanni Maria Cassini, produced this attractive map as part of his epic three-volume atlas. Published in: Nuovo atlante geografico universale delineato sulle ultime osservazioni. Roma, Calcografia camerale, 1792-1801. Cassini was geographer and cartographer but he was also good at engraving architectural items and perspectives – he was one of the best disciples Giovanni Battista Piranesi had. Moreover, Cassini was one of the last artists to engrave spheres in the XVIII century and his globes were quite famous and widespread, and realized the most important Italian Atlas of the XVIII century; his maps always bear a cartouche, extremely rich in colours and details. Copperplate with fine original hand colour, some foxing, otherwise in very good condition. Dimensioni 475 350mm

Large oblong 16m? (11 x 13.5 cm). With an engraved title-page and 64 (of a possible 100) engraved plates numbered 1-56, 58-61, and odd numbers 63-73 (including 2 folding plates with 2 numbers each, 21/22 and 23/24). Hand-coloured in watercolour by a contemporary hand. Contemporary half sheepskin, gold-tooled spine.

Bobins 1037; KVK & WorldCat (8 copies, incl. at least 2 with less than 100 pl.); Nebehay & Wagner 193; not in Abbey, Travel. A series of charming views of Vienna and its environs in the middle of Beethoven's thirty-five years there, around the time Wagner was born there, and about eight years after it became the capital of the new Austrian Empire, including views of Baden, Klosterneuburg, Bratislava and other neighbouring sites, all attractively and artistically coloured by a contemporary hand. It shows palaces, castles and ruins, churches, chapels and the Vienna cathedral, gardens and pavilions, city streets and squares, the spa at Baden, Christoph de Bach's Circus Gymnasticus, the lavish Apollo Saal, views along the Danube and more. The famous streets, squares, buildings and interiors appear bustling with fashionable ladies and gentlemen, pedestrians and horse-drawn carriages, and the river full of boats. Four views are signed by the artist, Josef Eisner (1788-1861), and about a third by the engraver, mostly Johann Jaresch (but two by Johann Boehm (ca. 1770-post 1821), probably as engraver). All plates are captioned in French and German, and numbered in the centre. With early owner's name. Although this book can have 100 plates, there is no evidence that any have been removed and none is numbered higher than 73. The present copy may therefore have been issued before the series was complete. The fact that most plates are still in their first states supports that suggestion. With a small stain affecting a couple letters on the title-page, an occasional lighter spot in some of the plates, and part of 1 letter shaved in one caption, but still in good condition. The binding is slightly worn, but is also still good. Lovely coloured views of Vienna when it was the musical and in many ways the cultural capital of Europe.

An address to the public, in behalf of the Association among Protestant Schoolmasters in the North of England, for the support of their aged brethren, widows, and orphans: in which the necessity and utility of that charitable institution are briefly illustrated. To which is subjoined, an abstract of the rules: submitted to the consideration of gentlemen and ladies who are inclined to promote this laudable scheme by their subscriptions or benefactions.

Newcastle: printed by M. Angus Drury-Lane and sold by all the booksellers in town and country 1788 - 8vo., 45 + (1)pp., well bound fairly recently in marbled boards, spine lettered on a paper label. A very good copy. Probably the 2nd edition, the BL having a copy of both a 1774 and a 1788 printing. However, ESTC finds no library holding of either issue elsewhere. The Introduction> (pp. iii-vi) is signed by Alex. Murray, Rev. Robert Green and James Wood who were presumably the trustees. They give a brief history of the Association which had been launched at a meeting of 'a respectable number of schoolmasters in Newcastle, assembled July 15th, 1774, to consider the practicableness of providing for their indigent brethren'. The Duke of Northumberland accepted the honorary office of President thereby taking 'the association under his protection'. The Rules of the Association, which here comprise pp.31-45, are largely typical of any Friendly Society of this period. It is worth noting, however, that the geographical limitations for membership comprised the towns of Newcastle Upon Tyne and Berwick upon Tweed and the counties of Northumberland, Cumberland, Westmoreland, and Durham.         Manuscript on paper, in Spanish. Carta de hidalguia.

Seville, Zacatecas, Mexico City, 1788. . 71r–84v). 85v–140v). 64v–66v). Curiously, also copied into this compendium is => the will of Doña Maria de Haro, the widow of Agustin Berdugo (fol. 66v–71r). Binding as above; free endpapers lacking and poor quality paper ones substituted for the "wallpaper," with some old "repair" to pastedown "wallpaper" at gutters. Bookstore label on font pastedown; Stenger's neat round ownership stamp on front free endpaper and verso of the vellum coat of arms. => This is a meaty example of an iconic kind of Spanish-world document offering social history, legal history, and painted and illuminated art, with the text presented in an attractive and readable hand and the whole in a good, attractive original binding.

[NATURAL HISTORY] Études de la nature

Paris : De l’imprimerie de Monsieur. Chez P. F. Didot le jeune [&] Méquignon l’aîné, 1788. Troisième Édition, revue, corrigée et augmentée. Four volumes, octavo, speckled calf (some wear to joints and edges), spines with raised bands, black and red morocco labels to spine, finely tooled, marbled endpapers and edges, frontispiece, pp. xxx, 648; 652; 596 (paper flaw to margin of pp. 515-516); 532 (tear to margin of pp. 529-530), 5 plates (one folding). This third edition of the botanist Saint-Pierre’s major work, first published in 1784, is divided into fourteen sections across four volumes. The first eight parts are general reflections on the nature of the cosmos, the animal and plant kingdoms and their relationship to a divine order. Parts nine to eleven deal with scientific method, laws and phenomena of nature such as colour, form and movement, the more abstract concepts of harmony, contrast and hierarchy, and how these ideas apply to the botanical realm. Parts twelve and thirteen cover the human physical senses and ‘sentiments’ - spiritual and emotional states including pity, love, pleasure and melancholy - and how these manifest themselves in various levels of society. The final volume is devoted to Saint-Pierre’s novel ‘Paul et Virginie’, a hugely popular work first published in 1787. Set in Mauritius, this work is a study of the conflict between a utopian world and what Saint-Pierre regarded as the false mores and ideals of the French ruling classes. It espouses the purity of Nature and the virtues of equality, harmony and emancipation, inspired to a large extent by the writings of the Enlightenment philosopher Rousseau. In the notes preceding this final volume, however, Saint-Pierre discusses reactions to the ideas and format of the previous editions of his Études de la nature, including observations on barometric pressure and tidal movement in New Holland and the Pacific based on data from Cook’s voyages.

He mastered natural science and mathematics in his youth, writing some 150 works on scientific subjects. He rigorously sought a comprehensive physical explanation of the world based on mathematical and mechanical principles. Gradually his inquiries turned toward philosophical matters and after a profound mystical experience in 1745 he devoted his reasoning almost entirely to the interpretation of religion. In these later treatises, Swedenborg gives vivid descriptions of his experiences in the spiritual worlds beyond space and time which he was able to enter by consciously suspending bodily sensations. Despite its bizarre aspects, his theosophical system is characterized by logic and is obviously rooted in his previous concern with the sciences. Swedenborg attempted to explain reality in terms of psychic energy, in which matter, intellect, and spirit emanate from the world soul. ¶ This work responds to the question as to whether the last judgment coincides with the final destruction of the world. It also collects reports from various sources of experiences of the next world. James John George Hyde, ?Rev. James Hyde, A bibliography of the works of Emanuel Swedenborg, 1168 & 1991. ¶ Hobart prints the content of a letter from Kant relating to Swedenborg's beliefs of the spiritual world, which he denotes it is “sound reason to incline to the negative side” meaning that there is no proof of spirits and there is also numerous cases of deceit, “proofs of deception, that I have never [considered] if necessary to suffer fear or dread to come upon me, either in the cemeteries or the dead, or in the darkness of night. This is the position in which my mind stood for a long time, until the accounts of Swedenborg came to my notice.” But having stated as much, he relates in detail an account involving figures of high repute, namely the Austrian ambassador, etc., and then relates, at great length, a proof of psychic feats by Swedenborg relating to the Stockholm fire of 1763, which was written in letter form to Charlotte von Knobloch, and another relating to the queen's secret. – Hobart, p. 68.
