Johnson, London, 1798. First edition in English? Ferguson 270; Hill, 974; Mclaren, \i Laperouse in the Pacific , 4. *The official account of the ill-fated voyage, originally published in French in 1797 in 4 quarto volumes plus a folio atlas. Two different translations into English quickly followed, both in 1798: the present edition published by Johnson, and one published by Stockdale. Forbes (\i Hawaiian National Bibliography , 287) suggests the Johnson edition was probably the earlier of these. The expedition led by La Perouse was one of the most important voyages of the eighteenth century, and was intended as the French equivalent of the explorations of Captain Cook. From the northwest coast of North America, La Perouse sailed across the Pacific, discovering uncharted islands, and visiting Macao, Manila and Korea. In September 1787 he replenished supplies at Kamchatka, and from there de Lesseps was sent overland to Paris, via Siberia, with details of the discoveries to date, plus the Spanish account of voyages by Francisco Antonio Mourelle, which La Perouse had apparently acquired in Asia. La Perouse sailed on to Norfolk Island, then to Botany Bay in January 1788, just after Governor Phillip had arrived with the First Fleet. He left a few weeks later, on March 10, and disappeared without trace. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Introduction begins: "The venereal disease, which, according to historians of the most undoubted credit, is a native of some of the American isalnds, especially Hispaniola, was brought into Spain near the end of the fifteenth Century, and thence carried into Naples [...]". "Some of the tribes of Indians, in the back parts of America, eat the serpents which they happen to kill in their hunting parties; such as the horned, the rattle, and the mukasoe snakes. [...] This curious circumstance I often had related to me by many of the sage farmers of North America, when I was in that part of the world; some of them of a very philosophic turn of mind: but it is very ingeniously related to me of late by a gentleman of strict honour and integrity, a native of North Carolina, who being a staunch loyalist, forsook an ample fortune in that country to support the royal cause. The following instance he has related to me among many. That he was once present, when a rattle sake, about three feet and half in length, had bit a horse as he was feeding in a meadow which had been mowed. The snake being observed by some workmen, was instantly surrounded by them, who, with long sticks, confined the animal to a small spot of ground in the same meadow. He several times attempted to direct his course to thick cover but care was taken to prevent him, till upwards o two hours was elapsed [...] " - pages 72-73. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .

[?Piramo e Tisbe]. Rondò Nel Lasciarti Amato Bene. Musical manuscript full score. Italian. Ca. 1788

Oblong folio (320 x 230 mm.). Sewn. [i] (title), 41, [ii] (blank), 4 pp. Notated in ink on 10-stave paper. Ascription: "Der Sig:r Mae:o Angelo Tarchi." Header to title in copyist's hand: "In Pisa nel Primavera dell'Anno 1788 Cantato dall'Celebre Sig:r Pietro Muschietti." "Po I No. 11 [?14]" to lower left corner of title. Various watermarks (three crescents, etc.). Aria of Piramo (soprano castrato). Ten-stave system. Scored for [2] Violini, [2] Oboe, [2] Corni [in F], [2] Viole, voice, unfigured instrumental bass. In F major. A second text underlay has been added in a different hand to several passages (written below the instrumental bass). Incipit: "Ho perduto Ogni mio bene..." Final four pages (one bifolium of different paper; watermark of three crescents) notated in a different hand; apparently added later. Note to upper left corner of first extra page: "Rec:vo antecedente a questo che siegue dovrà posare i in alamire terza min:e, a in elami con sesta e terza min:e." Five-stave systems; scored for [2] Violins, Viola, voice [Piramo?], and unfigured instrumental bass. Recitative modulates from D minor to B-flat major. It is not clear whether this recitative belongs to the same work as the aria; there is no trace of the "recitativo antecedente." Spine and edges of some leaves frayed. An enigmatic item. RISM lists no piece with the same music but several with the same text - arias from Giovanni Battista Borghi's Piramo e Tisbe (libretto by Gaetano Sertor), Filippo Maria Gherardeschi's Artaserse, Giuseppe Giordani's L'Acomate, Nicola Zingarelli's La morte de Cesare, etc. The identification of the character as "Piramo" in the present manuscript points to an opera on the subject of Pyramus and Thisbe, using the same libretto as Borghi's; Tarchi, however, has never been credited with such an opera. In addition, Gino dell'Ira's I teatri di Pisa 1773-1986, which chronicles all operatic performances in the city, mentions neither Tarchi nor any opera on the subject of Pyramus and Thisbe; likewise, the singer Pietro Muschietti is not mentioned. The ascription and note on the Pisa performance to the title of the present manuscript are thus somewhat puzzling. The unusual division of the violas might offer a clue to the authorship of the work upon further research.

UNKNOWN MAP OF GERMANY Map on 6 sheets (each measure mm. 430x272) printed in Venice by Francesco Orlandini, whose name appears in the cartouche with the title, in 1788. The map is iengraved by brothers Gaetano and Valentino Orlandini. We know that they are brothers by signing this map "Gaijetanus Sculpserunt Orlandini et Fratres Valentinus, Scripseruntque". No news about Francesco Oralndini we were able to rfind, while Gaetano and Valentino are cited in Cartografi Veneti by V. Valerio, known as map carvers of the map of Italy, always in 6 sheets, printed in 1786 by the same Francesco Orlandini. In the same publication, strangely, is not mentioned Francesco Orlandini. We hypothesize that Francesco is the father of the two engravers. The work, unknown to all repertoires, is etched into the classic Venetian styleof the time. The cartouche is very similar to those of the atlas by Antonio Zatta. The map of Italy by Orlandini is known in a single copy at the Central Library of Verona, while the map of Germany is absolutely unknown. Copper engraving, contemporary outline colour, 6 separate sheets, in excellent condition. Dimensioni

I.         La Turchia Europea divisa nelle sue provincie

Map taken form the very rare Atlante Geografico, the first draft of the abbot Bartolomeo Borghi, published in Siena by Pazzini Carli. Many of the mapss, dated between 1788 and 1800, are engraved by Agostino Costa and then later incorporated in the work of AB Atlante Generale di Bartolomeo Borghi, published in Florence in 1819. Bartolomeo Borghi, who Vermiglioli (Biography of writers Perugini, 1829) calls "one of the best geographers of Europe", was born in 1750 in Monte del Lago, a small fraction of the town of Mansfield, in the province of Perugia, on the shores of Lake Trasimeno. Ordained in 1774, spent the first years of his term in his hometown, then to Mansfield and then Sorbello (Cortona). A passionate student of geography, first applied his knowledge to the analysis of land more familiar to him: he wrote in 1770 Description geographical, physical and natural Lake Trasimeno (which will however be given to the press for the first time only in 1821), and 1791 published in the Proceedings of Etruscan Cortona a dissertation on the geography of ancient Etruria, Umbria and Piceno, enriching both the works of a map of the regions described. Meanwhile, his fame as a cartographer, as well as a geographer, was growing, so that he get the nomination as a member of the Royal Academies of Florence and Cortona, and give him the job, by Pietro Leopoldo, to outline the paper's public land Cortona and the county of Castiglione. At the same time the geographical horizons of its activities widened consider

Paris, Chez la Veuve Desaint, 1788. 4to. Beautiful contemporary full mottled calf with richly gilt spine and gilt borders to boards. Double gilt line-borders to edges of boards. Binding with wear, especially to capitals, corners, and hinges - binding still tight, though. A tear to lower front hinge and small lack of leather to upper capital as well as corners. (a2&3) loose, but intact, present, and NOT supplied from another copy. Very minor scattered brownspotting to a few leaves, otherwise very fine and clean. In spite of wear, a nice and tight copy, which is completely unrestored. XII,512 pp. First edition of Lagrange's masterpiece, "which laid the foundation of modern mechanics, and which occupies a place in the history of the subject second only to that of Newton's Principia". (Wolf). In "Méchanique Analytique" Lagrange reformulated classical Newtonian mechanics in a purely analytical manner, whereas Newton derived his results geometrically, or synthetically, with the aid of figures. "Lagrange proposed to reduce the theory of mechanics and the art of solving problems in that field to general formulas, the mere development of which would yield all the equations necessary for the solution of every problem." (DSB). In his preface, Lagrange draws attention to the absence of diagrams in the book, which he believed the lucidity of his own presentation had rendered superfluous. Horblit/Grolier 61; Dibner 112; Sparrow 120; Norman 1257.

- FIRST EDITION, CONTEMPORARY OUTLINE COLOUR - The Italian painter and engraver, Giovanni Maria Cassini, produced this splendid 6 sheets wall map of Balkans of as part of his epic three-volume atlas. Published in: Nuovo atlante geografico universale delineato sulle ultime osservazioni. Roma, Calcografia camerale, 1792-1801. Cassini was geographer and cartographer but he was also good at engraving architectural items and perspectives – he was one of the best disciples Giovanni Battista Piranesi had. Moreover, Cassini was one of the last artists to engrave spheres in the XVIII century and his globes were quite famous and widespread, and realized the most important Italian Atlas of the XVIII century; his maps always bear a cartouche, extremely rich in colours and details. Copperplate with fine original hand colour, some foxing, otherwise in very good condition. The Cassini's Atlas was reprinted by the Calcografia Camerale in the first quarter of XIXth century (before 1839). Only the first edition of the atlas is printed on contemporary laid paper, while the late issue are on XIXth century paper and often without colour. Dimensioni

Travels from St. Petersburgh in Russia to Various Parts of Asia

William Creech, Edinburgh 1788 - With 2 large folding maps. Contemporary calf, rebacked, spine with elaborate gilt design and labels, covers lightly rubbed; text is somewhat toned with minor repairs to maps. Generally a very good copy. Third edition of a fascinating narrative vividly detailing Bell's account of his journey through Russia to Serbia, Persia, and into China on behalf of the Russian tsar. This remarkable journey is of extreme importance as one of the most complete and interesting descriptions of travel to Asia in the late eighteenth century. Of particular importance are Bell's notes of the Dalai Lama and the Great Wall of China, as well as his astute observations on the cultures, people, customs, and government in China. Volume II also contains the lengthy journal of Mr. Lorenz de Lange, a Swedish engineer and Russian diplomat stationed at the Court of Peking from 1721-1722, which Bell calls a "curious and authentic piece" (223). Positioned in China at the request of Peter the Great, de Lange saw to it that trade and commerce negotiations went in Russia's favor. The journal provides a unique perspective on relations between Russia and China and the problems that the two countries faced over borders, trade, and commerce. His reports on the border skirmishes between Siberia, Mongolia, and China were invaluable to the Russian empire and had a profound affect on Russian foreign policy. Bell (1691-1780), a Scottish physician and traveler, became the medical attendant to Russian diplomat Artemy Petrovich Volynsky in 1714 and as a result accompanied him on a series of expeditions to Asia beginning in 1715 on behalf of the Russian Tsar. Little is known of his education and career other than his penchant for travel. Advised by William Robertson (1721-1793), the acclaimed Scottish historian and writer, to model his account in the style of Gulliver's Travels, this became Bell's only published work. His third and final voyage to Constantinople was a joint effort between Russia and Great Britain, and Bell's last diplomatic mission.

O vospitanii detei gospodina Lokka. Perevedeno s frantsuzskago na rossiiskoi iazyk Imperatorskogo Moskovskogo Universiteta Professorom Nikolaem Popovskim. chast' I, izdanie vtoroe [Some Thoughts Concerning Education. Translated from the French into Russian by Nikolai Popovskii, professor of Moscow University, part I, second edition]

v Tipografii Kompanii Tipograficheskoi, Moscow 1788 - Octavo (22 × 14 cm). Contemporary calf; red and gilt-lettered spine label; VIII, 323 pp. Bookplate of the distinguished collector Martin Winkler. Boards rubbed; front free end paper lightly soiled; one leaf with small tear to margin, not affecting text; still about very good. First part (of two) of the first Russian translation of Locke's famous pedagogical reflections, first published 1759, and very rare. "Despite the fact that Locke occupied a central place in European Enlightenment thought, his works were little known in Russia. Prokopovich, Kantemir, Tatishchev and perhaps Peter himself were acquainted with Locke's ideas, but for most Russians in the eighteenth century Locke was little more than an illustrious name. Locke's one book that did have a palpable impact was his Some Thoughts Concerning Education. Yet though Locke as pedagogue was popular, his reception in Russia, as Marc Raeff has noted, was overshadowed by the then current 'infatuation with Rousseau's pedagogical ideas'" (Marcus C. Levitt, "On Locke's Reception in Eighteenth-Century Russia," 219). Moreover, moralist literature as such was only scarcely represented in Russian publications of the second half of the century. Originally written for a close friend, Locke's 1693 text sets out a system for training noblemen by fostering healthy bodies and virtuous minds, based on the philosopher's assumption that all children are born without innate ideas or characteristics. The work was perhaps the most influential work on education of the eighteenth century, widely translated into other European language and acknowledged by thinkers from Leibniz to Rousseau. This edition, based on a French translation, contains an interesting preface defending Locke before his Russian critics, who rejected his "Englishness" and challenged the applicability of his ideas in Russia. Popovskii argues that Locke's thoughts hold value for preparing the children of "honest parents" anywhere to better serve their fatherland. He justifies Locke's methods for toughening the body, such as washing with cold water, by citing examples from antiquity, and he even suggests extending Locke's approach to children of non-noble birth. From the collection of noted German scholar and icon collector Martin E. Winkler (1893-1982). Neither edition in Bitovt. Svodnyi katalog 3721. Not found in KVK, OCLC (which only show a microform at Harvard). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Like his contemporary, Captain Peron, Meares was also engaged in the fur trade between British Columbia and China. His vessels were seized at Nootka Sound by the Spaniards, who claimed all that coast as Spanish. War nearly broke out between England and Spain over the question, and the latter had to give way."         The Federalist: A Collection of Essays Written in Favor of the New Constitution, as Agreed upon by the Federal Convention, September 17, 1787

John and Andrew MÕLean, New York 1788 - First Edition. Volume two of two only. Modern calf, red leather spine label, gilt work to spine. The second volume of what is generally considered to be one of the most important works of American political thought. Despite lacking the first 36 essays found in volume one, this volume does includes several important pieces by each of the three founding fathers. In Federalist No. 84, Hamilton makes the case that there is no need to amend the Constitution by adding a Bill of Rights, insisting that the various provisions in the proposed Constitution protecting liberty amount to a bill of rights. Federalist No. 78, also written by Hamilton, lays the groundwork for the doctrine of judicial review by federal courts of federal legislation or executive acts. Federalist No. 70 presents Hamilton's case for a one-man chief executive. In Federalist No. 39, Madison presents the clearest exposition of what has come to be called Federalism.       29 folding engraved plates & one folding printed table. xxxii, 512 pp. 8vo, cont. polished tree-calf (minor foxing), flat spine finely gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Liegnitz & Leipzig: D. Giegert, 1788. Third edition (1st ed.: 1760), of one of the most valued works on artillery of the second half of the 18th century, containing the final revisions of the author. At the beginning of his career, Struensee (1735-1804), was a professor of philosophy and mathematics at the Ritter Academy of Liegnitz (modern-day Legnica). While there, he taught military science and noted the lack of general works on various areas of the subject. He proceeded to write several books within the field, including a notable book on military architecture and the present work on artillery and ballistics. He later became an important government official, specializing in financial administration. This treatise was one of the best books on the subject through the end of the 18th century. The plates depict various kinds of field and stationary artillery and ordnance. Various problems of ballistics are also illustrated. The table presents a chart of measurements divided according to cannon size (4-pound, 8-pound, 12-pound, 16-pound, and 24-pound). Struensee also provides a short annotated bibliography of the best books on artillery published previous to his own work. Very pretty copy. Bookplates of Lt. General G.L. Parker, son of the 2nd Earl of Macclesfield, and South Library. ❧ A.D.B., Vol. 36, p. 661-665. N.B.G., Vol. 44, cols. 569-70.

Allgemeine Geschichte der Musik, 2 Bände (mit zehn gefalteten Kupfertafeln).

Leipzig, Schwickert, 1788 - 1801. Vollständiges Werk in zwei Bänden. Worcester: Isaiah Thomas, 1788. 209pp. 20th-century three-quarter black morocco and marbled boards, spine gilt. Contemporary inscription on titlepage. Light toning, some foxing. Very good. An important argument in favor of adopting the Constitution. "Jackson arrives in a most leisurely manner at his conclusion that the Constitution should be ratified...he condemns opulence and drunkenness as unbecoming to a republic, and warns the country to be on guard against European influence in either politics or fashion" - Streeter. Jackson (1743-1810) was a Harvard graduate, member of Congress, state senator, and in 1789 was made a United States marshal. His arguments are a classic example of a New England Federalist. This copy apparently inscribed by the author on the titlepage: "The gift of the author [to] D. Atkins, 1788." HOWES J23. EVANS 21173. ESTC W28300. COHEN 2838. SABIN 35441. STREETER SALE 1051.

*-------*. In-8. Collation : 31 pp. Cousu sur brochure.

London: G. Nicol, 1788. 6/25/16. xxvii, 378 pp. Folding chart, b/w plates. “This was one of the most popular of all shipwreck narratives, partly because of the happy ending, of the adventure and partly because of the detailed descriptions of the Pelew IslandsÂ’ natural features and society... Wilson exercised excellent control over his men, dealt smoothly with the natives... The crew set to work to build a schooner from native lumber, while some of their members fought for their hosts in native wars...”— Huntress 107C. When they returned to England they took one of the Pelew Islanders, Prince Lee Boo, with them. He was a celebrity but unfortunately died of smallpox. This is a first edition, bound in full mottled calf. Short worm track on front board. Backstrip dried and showing some wear. Front hinge cracked but holding.
