A scarce map of the Americas featuring the discoveries of Captain Cook. In North America a possible Northwest Passage is labeled B. di Beering and Alaska makes a very early appearance Cook's three voyages are traced in the Pacific, where are present both islands of New Zealand. An uncommon map, published in the 'Nuovo Atlante Geografico Universale', with a decorative title cartouche, by Giovanni Maria Cassini, a Somasco monk. He was geographer and cartographer but he was also good at engraving architectural items and perspectives ? he was one of the best disciples Giovanni Battista Piranesi had. Moreover, Cassini was one of the last artists to engrave spheres in the XVIII century and his globes were quite famous and widespread, and realized the most important Italian Atlas of the XVIII century; his maps always bear a cartouche, extremely rich in colours and details. Copperplate with fine later hand colour, in very good condition. Roma Rome 470 345

        (Calabria)

Hauniae, N. Mölleri/ N. Christensen, 1788-1806. 4 volumes bound in two. Folio (387 x 240mm). pp. v, (1), 52; (4), 56; (4), 71; (6), 46, with engraved title vignettes and 160 beautifully handcoloured engraved plates. Contemporary half calf, gilt lettered spines in 6 compartments, marbled sides, upper edges gilt. A fine copy, of a very rare work, describing the marine fauna of Denmark and Norway. This beautifully produced work is one of the rarest zoological publications. Müller complains that no more than 25 copies had been sold in Denmark, not a single copy in Norway, two copies in Italy, 2 copies in England and 2 in France. "For the rest of his life he was able to live a financially carefree existence, having in May 1773 married the widow of a rich Norwegian merchant, Anna Carlsen, née Paludan. Through his marriage Müller formed close ties with Norway, his 'new fatherland' as he occasionally called that country. During the remainder of his life he often spent the summer on his estate at Drobak, on Oslo Fiord, and he traveled a good deal about Norway, inland and along the coasts, studying and collecting material for his scientific work" (Anker). Müller was one of the first to use a dredge to collect specimens on a scale never used before. "Müller must therefore be regarded as one of the real pioneers in marine biology?"(Anker). Müller died after the first two volumes had been published, the third volume was by P.C. Abildgaard and the concluding volume by P.C. Abildgaard, J.S. Holten, M. Vahl and J.Rathke. Most of the plates are by O.F. Müller's brother C.F. Müller. "In the first part of 'Zoologia Danica', almost all the described animals were from Norway. Except for one fish, all were invertebrates and included protozoans, sponges, coelenterates, flatworms, nematodes, annelids, mollusks, and echinoderms. This pattern was followed fairly closely in all other parts" (Damkaer). Of the 160 plates, 16 show shells, 10 fishes, 4 birds and 1 mammals, the others show marine invertebrates. As far as we can trace we have never offered a complete fully coloured copy. In 1974 we sold a copy from the library of the Belgian zoologist J. Van Beneden. However, the plates of the last part of this copy were not coloured. Our copy has the stamp of Léon Vaillant on 2 title pages. Léon Vaillant (1834-1914) was a French zoologist and professor at the Museum of natural History in Paris. A very clean and fine copy, with splendid colouring of the plates. For the complicated publishing history of the 'Zoologia Danica' see page 91-94 of Anker's monograph on Müller. Nissen ZBI, 2932; D.M. Damkaer, The Copepodologist's Cabinet pp. 72-87; Jean Anker, Otto Friderich Müller's Zoologia Danica. Copenhagen 1950.

THE ADVENTURES OF A SILVER PENNY. Including Many Secret Anecdotes of Little Misses and Masters both Good and Naughty.

Wood-engraved frontispiece signed 'Bwk', [4], 126 pages. 12 woodcuts in text. Original Dutch floral boards. One of two variants of this edition with the frontis' either found signed or unsigned by Bewick. Lacks rear endpaper; re-backed at some time in matching 18th century paper; inscription on front fixed endpaper and the bookplate of Sydney Roscoe;; small corner torn from top outer edge of title; else a very good copy of a rare work contained in a folding cloth, gilt box. Roscoe J3920. Originally Sydney Roscoe's copy with his bookplate and note on rear endpaper, later Margaret Weedon's. According to Nigel Tattersfield's research, this title was first published as Roscoe suggested, in 1786. However, 'the original woodcuts were undistinguished and it was not long before JB was commissioned to provide a completely new set. It was probably amongst the 'several Jobs for Newbery' that John reported to his brother he had done on his own account by mid-February 1788. It is salutary to compare the cuts however, for John improves the original illustrations out of all recognition.' The British Library has the original edition of 1786. Clearly the above copy is the Bewick edition of circa 1788.

        Critik der practischen Vernunft.

Riga, Hartknoch, 1788. 8vo. A bit later (1840'ies) half cloth with gilding to spine. Old allegorical stamp to title-page; another stamp at lower margin removed, likewise old owner's name.Otherwise a very nice copy. Woodcut title-vignette. 292 pp.. First edition of Kant's second main work, the second of his critical works, and his main work on practical philosophy. Together Kant's three critiques, that of pure reason, that of practical reason and that of judgement, make up the most important contribution to philosophy since Aristotle and Plato. Kant's influence on modern philosophy is primarily due to his critical works, and with them he gives to philosophy a new and comprehensive way of dealing systematically with the problems of philosophy. In his "Critique of Practical reason" Kant establishes the "Categorical Imperative", which was to found modern ethics, and with it he establishes the moral philosophy that ties together all of his critical philosophy. The work has dominated Western ethical thought decisively from the time of its appearance.Warda: 112. See also Printing and the Mind of Man 226 (Critik der reinen Vernunft)

The NAVAL ATALANTIS; or, A Display of the Characters of Such Flag Officers as Were Distinguished During the Last War. [bound with] The NAVAL ATALANTIS; or, A Display of the Characters of Post-Captains, Who Served During the Late War. Part II

London:: Printed for James Ridgway,. 1788 / 1789.. 8vo. 8-1/2" x 5-1/8". 1st edition (Howes H229; Sabin 52070 [Part I only]). [4], iv, 195, [1 (blank)]; [2], viii, 125, [1 (advert)] pp.. Binding with later speckled calf leather spine, vellum tips, brown paper-wrapped boards & green leather title label to spine. Speckled edges.. Average wear. Occasional po pencil annotations. Withal, a VG copy.. A volume providing character sketches of 91 British officers, many of whom played a role in the American Revolution, and which several, says Howes, "are unmercifully criticised or lampooned by Harris, notably Viscount William Howe, Lord of the Admiralty." Regarding Admiral Lord Howe, the author states "we do not find that he has in any respect signalized himself; in fact, his Lordship's conduct on the coast of North America, rather served to throw a shade over the laurels he had acquired in his youthÉ" Harris was reputedly the secretary to Admiral Milbanke, who is featured in Part I, as one of the 47 officers covered therein. Part II, published a year later, continues with 44 Captains receiving Harris' critical eye & treatment with his frequently caustic pen. Somewhat rare in the trade, with no copies at auction these last 30+ years, per ABPC & AmEx.

        L'Indiscretion

Paris: A Paris chez Janinet, rue Haute Feuille, No. 5. Et chez Efnauts et Rapilly, rue St. Jacques, a la Ville de Coutances, No. 259, July 1788. Mixed method colour print, printed in yellow, blue, red, pink and black inks from five plates. Two registration marks in plate. In excellent condition with wide margins. Image size: 14 x 11 inches. 14 1/4 x 19 1/4 inches. 21 3/4 x 16 3/4 inches. This is considered one of Janinet's masterpieces. From a series of boudoir scenes executed in collaboration with the painter Nicolas Lavreince, it is an exquisite example of a newly devised method of colour printing Jean Francois Janinet (1752-1814) was one of the most accomplished French engravers of the eighteenth century. His beautiful images are among the most sought after prints on the market and they stand as a testimony to the superior quality of early French colour printing. "In 1771 Janinet began to work in Bonnet's atelier where he soon mastered the techniques of multiple-plate colour printing and chalk-manner engraving. On his own, he refined these processes by 1772 to produce the first colour prints in imitation of watercolour and wash drawings. These prints were executed entirely with specialized engraver's tools and without recourse to aquatint". During his career "Janinet made more than eight hundred prints, including 260 in drawing books, three hundred views, 175 costume and theatrical portraits, fifty-six scenes of the significant events of the Revolution, as well as numerous little round prints for buttons and box tops, few of which survive". Janinet's best work is exemplified in this beautiful print, which was published as part of a series of twelve. The series was executed in collaboration with the celebrated Swedish artist Nicolas Lavreince. In Paris during the latter part of the eighteenth century there developed a fashion for titillating pictures of intimate boudoir scenes. This print is a wonderful example of this trend, as well as a lovely impression of the engraving. "L'Indiscretion" was published by Janinet in 1788 as the third print in his famous collaborative series with Lavreince. Typical of this genre of French printmaking "L'Indiscretion" is set in an extravagant boudoir where two young women fight for the possession of a love letter. Boken har ägts i samma familj i fyra led: grosshandlaren Carl Östberg var svärfar till Clas Tamm som var far respektive farfar till Adolf och Anton, vilka alla tre föddes på Tvetaberg

        [Romantic Landscape]

London: Published by Molteno & Co. No. 132, Pall Mall, Sept. 1, 1788. Etching and aquatint with hand-colour. Lovely contemporary colour. As usual text line is attached on verso of sheet. In excellent condition. Trimmed as usual and mounted on washline background. Mounting sheet is watermarked laid paper. Image size: 14 5/8 x 20 1/4 inches. 16 11/16 x 22 1/4 inches. A charming landscape by Samuel Ireland, the engraver and collector connected with the infamous Shakespeare forgeries. Ireland was a minor engraver and publisher who worked in London at the close of the eighteenth century. He was an avid art and manuscript collector, and many of the works that he engraved and published were after pieces found in his own collection. This romantic continental view is after a painting by David Tenier, which was in Ireland's collection at the time. This image operates as both an example of the picturesque tradition in eighteenth century landscape prints, and as an advertisement and promotion of Ireland's celebrated collection. With this image Ireland presents himself as both a serious engraver and a respected collector. Unfortunately, today Ireland is better remembered for his involvement in the Shakespeare forgeries than for his evocative prints. Over a period of many years Ireland's son, William Henry, sold his father a series of forged manuscripts, which he claimed to be written in Shakespeare's hand. Ireland, who willingly trusted his son, added these forgeries to his collection and presented them in an exhibition to the literary community, who accepted them as genuine. The charade progressed so far that an invented play entitled 'Vortigern', which William Henry had written and presented as a missing work by Shakespeare, was performed at Sheridan's Drury Lane theatre by some of the leading actors of the age. When the hoax was eventually discovered Ireland's reputation was ruined, and his son was disgraced. This print is from the famed Oettingen-Wallerstein collection, which was compiled over two centuries by various members of the royal household. The collection is known for its stunning impressions and the immaculate condition of its prints. Dictionary of National Biography; Lugt, Les Marques de Collections, (Supplement) 2715a
