An Essay On The Life Of The Honorable Major-General Israel Putnam: Addressed to the State Society of the Cincinnati in Connecticut

Hartford, Connecticut: Hudson and Goodwin, 1788. First edition. later full polished brown calf ruled in gilt, gilt decorated spine with raised bands and green gilt lettered morocco labels, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers, by Pratt. Minor rubbing, a fine copy. 12mo. The scarce first edition of David Humphreys? celebrated and lasting biography of Revolutionary War General Israel Putnam. Humphreys himself performed heroically during the Revolution, and was much admired by George Washington. The book is still a useful source, containing a storehouse of firsthand anecdotes regarding Putnam?s wartime exploits. Humphreys ?had a natural talent or military science, and there are few more intelligent contemporary pictures of certain important campaigns, notably the battle of Long Island and the retreat from Harlem, than those contained in his Essay. In this he wrote as he fought, coolly and vigorously, and the book remains a testimonial to Putnam, to the effort and sacrifice of those stirring days, and to Humphreys own victorious good sense? -DAB [Howes (D)794.         Maryland Ratifies the Constitution, Suggests Amendments; and Pennsylvanians Speak Out Against the Slave Trade

Philadelphia, PA 1788 - Newspaper. Independent Gazetteer; or, The Chronicle of Freedom, Philadelphia, Pa., May 6, 1788. 4 pp., 9 1/2 x 11 1/2 in. The Maryland ratifying convention suggests some amendments along with their approval of the Constitution. ExcerptsFrom page 3:"From the MARYLAND GAZETTE, or April 29, 1788. The CONVENTION of this state, on Saturday last, determined to ratify the proposed plan of Federal Government. -YEAS 63, NAYS 11-And then appointed a committee of thirteen members to consider and report amendments to be recommended to the people. -The following amendments were proposed by a member, and referred to the committee who are now sitting-And it is hoped that the great and essential rights of the people will be declared and secured.- PROPOSED AMENDMENTS.Wherefore, whenever the ends of Government are perverted, and public liberty manifestedly endangered, and all other means of redress are ineffectual, the people may, and of right ought, to object to reform the old, or establish a new Government-that the doctrine of nonresistance against arbitrary power and oppression is absurd, slavish, and destructive of the good and happiness of mankind. All imposts and duties laid by Congress, shall be placed to the credit of the state in which the same be collected. That there shall be no national religion established by law; but that all persons be equally entitled to protection in their religious liberty. That the Supreme Federal Courts shall not admit to fictions to extend its jurisdiction; nor shall citizens of the same state, having controversies with each other, be suffered to make collusive assignments of their rights, to the citizens of another state, for the purpose of defeating the jurisdiction of the State Courts; nor shall any matter, or question already determined in the State Courts, be revived or agitated in the Federal Courts. That Congress have no power to lay a Poll-Tax. That the people have a right to freedom of speech, of writing and publishing their sentiments, and therefore that the freedom of the PRESS ought not to be restrained, and the printing presses ought to be free to examine the proceedings of Government, and the conduct of its officers."From page 2: Protesting the Slave Trade by Boycotting West Indian Produce"A CAUTION.WHEREAS, in the year 1787, some vessels were fitted out at the port of Philadelphia, for the iniquitous purpose of stealing the inhabitants of Africa, from all the endearments of domestic life; one of which vessels has succeeded in obtaining a number of poor blacks, and has taken the to a port in the West Indies, where they are under the iron hand of oppression. From this shameful traffic, this horrid source, the proprietors of the vessel have purchased some West India produce, which, after landing at Wilmington, they have brought up to this city, and offered for sale. It is a grateful circumstance to the supporters of the common rights of mankind, that the virtuous inhabitants of the city, reprobate the horrid idea.-A correspondent hopes, that the citizens will further testify their disapprobation of the practice by turning with indignation from the purchase of any property, thus basely procured by men so lost to the common feelings of humanity; notwithstanding the patriotic convention, at which Washington presided, have declared that this abominable traffic shall be continued for TWENTY years by the people of America. From page 1:An advertisement with engraving for a "Line of Stages" between Philadelphia and New York, started by four partners who split off from an established stage line and promising better service. From page 4:An advertisement for another, different "New Line of Stages." And a report on the creation of a Philadelphia committee for the relief of the nearly 100 Americans captured by Algerian corsairs and Barbary pirates.

        View in Macao

London:: John Webber,. 1788-92 & 1809 (1820).. The "View in Macao" is offered here in two versions; a rare colored Lifetime issue & the Boydell issue. The rare lifetime issue was self- published by Webber and is a soft ground etching. This is an extremely rare hand colored copy, which Sir Maurice Holmes states in his "Captain James Cook RN FRS, A Bibliographical Excursion" (1952) that the original drawings were "etched and coloured by himself". Impression mark 450 x 323 mm with large margins, 539 x 390 mm. With notations in pencil, quite possibly by Webber - "Pl.13" penciled in the top right corner, along with "1st Augt. 1788" in the lower right. Soft ground etching with hand color. Watermark J. Whatman. Joppien 3.372A.a. & [with] & The Boydell issue, published in John Webber's "Views in the South Seas", which has been called "the most striking publication resulting from Cook's expeditions". (Parsons Collection 136). Vide Cook's Last Voyage Vol. 3 Chap. 11. London. Pubd. April 1, 1809 by Boydell & Compy. No. 90 Cheapside. Impression mark 450 x 325 mm, on paper 500 x 363 mm. Colored aquatint. Light foxing in the margins and some offsetting from the accompanying text page, which is drawn from the published account of the voyage. Both the print and letterpress are watermarked J. Whatman 1820. Joppien & Smith 3.372A.b. & & Webber was engaged as the official artist for Cook's third voyage, during which Cook discovered Hawaii & Alaska. Webber was more fully trained than any of the artists of the previous voyages, and he and Cook worked closely together to illuminate "the unavoidable imperfections of written accounts, by enabling us to preserve, and to bring home, such drawings of the most memorable scenes of our transactions, as could only be expected by a professed and skilled artist." (J. Cook & J. King, Voyage to the Pacific Ocean, London 1784, Vol I, p.5). Because he was there with Cook in the field, his paintings "constituted a new visual source for the study of history..." (Smith, Bernard, Art as Information. Sydney, 1978). Cook's ships were the first Western contact with the natives of Nootka Sound and the furs they traded with them were sold at a vast profit in Macao in the following year, 1779. Soon American and English ships were making annual trips to the Northwest Coast in search of "Sea Beaver" pelts. & & After the publication of the official history, Webber issued a series of twelve splendid soft ground etchings produced between 1788 and 1792 and this print is one of those early issues. It is extraordinarily rare. The culmination of his long concentration on his sixteen subjects was finally issued as a book after his death by Mr. Boydell under the title "Views in the South Seas..." The proof reader did a poor job, with two mistakes on the title page, mistaking Webber's last name for James and Captain Cook's name as "Cooke". In this issue, which is also scarce, the plates are dated April 1, 1809, although the watermarks are nearly always later. & & Only 16 views were published in the book - the two views of Macao indicate its significance in the East.

        Untitled Decorative Medallion]

[London] 1788 - A beautifully designed image from Edwards "A Collection of Flowers drawn after Nature.", a superb and rare work. Edwards lived in London until about 1778 when he moved to Surrey, exhibiting at the Society of Artists, of which he was a member, and at the Royal Academy. In addition to the fine arts, he also provided designs for textiles, particularly cotton calico. Between 1769 and 1770 he published Edwards British Herbal in monthly parts, with text garnered from the works of contemporary botanists and 100 fine hand-coloured engraved plates from his own designs. The plates show that his interests lay not so much in the accurate depiction of botanical specimens as the design possibilities of beautiful flowers. The present work, his masterpiece, was his next publishing venture. Working from the imprint dates of the plates it is clear that he began to publish designs for the work in 1783, with plates being completed periodically throughout the 1780s and well into the following decade. Unlike his previous work, all the plates are designed, etched and coloured by Edwards himself, a process which gave him complete control over the publication. Cf. Dunthorne 105; cf. Great Flower Books (1990) p 93; cf. Henrey III 673; cf. Nissen BBI 579; cf. Oak Spring Flora p 64. Hand-coloured engraving by Edwards. Very good condition.

First Spanish edition of a fundamental 18th century work on Chili by a Chilean. 1788-95. Madrid. Antonio de Sancha. Two volumes in 8vo (208 mm x 142 mm). xx + 418 + 1 [blank]; xvi + 382 + 1 ff. + 1 [blank] + 8 plates & maps. Contemporary calf, spine gilt with raised bands forming compartments, two morocco labels lettered in gilt, most attractive bindings in very good condition, only slightly rubbed. A fine copy, with only a few scattered foxing spots and mainly marginal worm holes to several leaves in second volume, occasionally touching headlines, heavier on places but overall clean and fresh. First Spanish edition -first printed in Italian during the author´s exile. According to Sabin, the Spanish translation is more complete than the original Italian, with several notes from the translator to the second part. The work deals with the country´s history, costumes, natural history and natives. Illustrated with three folding maps of Chili ¿two regional and the other including the Coast and handsomely decorated with a cartouche-, a frontispiece with the portrait of the author, three folding tables showing the state of Chili and one folding plan of the parks and fortresses in the border of Arauco. Molina (1740 ¿ 1829) was a Chilean historian, naturalist and Jesuit Priest ¿entering the Order at 15. The fact that he was born in Chili makes him arguably one of the first Chilean historians born in Chili; after the 1767 expulsion of the Jesuits, he exiled to Bologna, from where his works where published; the later years of his life where his most productive, having being father of a progressive evolutionary theory which gained him an investigation from the Church. Molina, known for his linguistic skills, included a Chilean vocabulary at the end. Palau, 174563. Sabin, 49889. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Plan of the Coast of Cherbourg, with a Sketch of the Works which the French are now executing to Inclose and Defend the Road, &c. Third Edition Revised, Corrected and Improved.

[London], Published as the Act directs, by W[illia]m Faden, Geog[raphe]r to the King, Charing Cross, Jan[uar]y 1st, 1788. - Broadsheet engraved plan, original outline hand-colour, inset plan of the 'conical caissons' letterpress text below. Rare separately issued plan of Cherbourg. The plan gives detailed information on the defences at Cherbourg in 1788, with the position of the forts, redoubts and the reach of their cannon and mortar; together with the placement and construction of the 'Trucated Cones, or Conical Caissons'. These large wooden structures - some 170 feet in diameter - were being placed at the harbour's mouth in order to narrow its entrance. The plan and the text below goes into considerable detail upon their construction and to how they were placed in the harbour. Although not at war with the French at the time, the plan highlights England's continued concern about the strength and defenses of the French channel ports and their interest in French military technology.         [A series of major papers on the calculus of variations and mechanics, contained in the first three volumes of Miscellanea Taurinensia].Turin: De l'Imprimerie Royale, 1759-1766.

First editions of the major early papers of Lagrange on the calculus of variations and mechanics, published in the first three volumes of the <i>Miscellanea Taurinensia</i>, of which he was one of the founders. "The first three volumes contained almost all the works Lagrange published while in Turin" (DSB). <br/><br/> The papers are as follows:<br/><br/> I. Recherches sur la méthode de maximis, et minimis (I, 18-32) <br/> II. Solutions de différents problèmes de calcul intégral (III, pp. 179-380) <br/><br/> In the opinion of Lacroix, 'Essai d'une nouvelle methode pour déterminer les maxima & les minima des formules intégrales indéfinies' was 'one of the first and the principal discoveries of Mr. Lagrange, and which rests on the highest degree of abstraction to which mathematics has been lifted up to now' (quoted in Grattan-Guinness, p. 237). Its sequel, 'Application de la méthode précédente à la solution de differens problêmes de dynamique,' "heralded the <i>Mécanique analytique</i> of 1788 in its style and in the breadth of the author's views" (DSB). <br/><br/> "The Memoirs of the Turing Academy for the years 1760-1761 contain two papers by the young Italian geometer J. L. Lagrange: 'Essai d'une nouvelle methode pour déterminer les maxima & les minima des formules intégrales indéfinies' and 'Application de la méthode précédente à la solution de differens problêmes de dynamique.' The theory presented in these memoirs actually originated several years earlier in Lagrange's first important work in mathematical science. In a letter of 1755 to Leonhard Euler the nineteen-year-old Lagrange explained that he had derived a general method for treating those problems which had appeared in Euler's classic treatise of 1744 <i>Methodus inveniendi lineas curvas maximi minimive proprietate gaudentes</i> (Method of finding curves lines which show some maximum or minimum property). The branch of mathematics that studies such problems later became known as the calculus of variations and it was Lagrange's achievement to give the subject its characteristic methods and symbolism. In particular, he introduced a new calculus based on the symbol d which provided a powerful tool for attacking the following general problem: given an expression involving several variables and their derivatives, to find the functional relation between these variables which makes the definite integral of the given expression an extremum" (Fraser, p. 198). <br/><br/> "Lagrange's education and early career took place entirely in his home town of Turin, where he spent the first three decades of his life. As early as 1754, at the age of 18, he corresponded with Euler and Giullio di Fagnano (1682-1766) on mathematical questions. He took up a teaching appointment at the Royal College of Gunnery in Turin in 1755 and in the following year became a Foreign Member of the Berlin Academy. Even at this early stage he was developing his d-calculus, which opened up a new approach to the calculus of variations without recourse to Euler's geometric considerations. Soon afterwards, Lagrange co-founded a scientific society, which later grew into the Royal Academy of Science of Turin. Its journal, <i>Miscellanea Taurinensia</i>, first appeared in 1759 and contained some of his most important work on the calculus of variations and analytical mechanics" (<i>Landmark Writings</i>, p. 209). <br/><br/> "In volume 1 of the <i>Mélanges de Turin</i> are Lagrange's 'Recherches sur la méthode de maximis et minimis,' really an introduction to the memoir [V] in volume 2 on the calculus of variations... Another short memoir, 'Sur l'intégration d'une équation différentielle à différences finies, qui contient la théorie des suites récurrentes' (pp. 33-42) was cited by Lagrange in 1776 as an introduction to investigations on the calculus of probabilities that he was unable to develop for lack of time. <br/><br/> "'Recherches sur la nature et la propagation du son' constitutes a thorough and extensive study of a question much discussed at the time. In it Lagrange displays an astonishing erudition. He had read and pondered the writings of Newton, Daniel Benoulli, Taylor. Euler, and Alembert; and his own contribution to the problem of vibrating strings makes him the equal of his predecessors" (DSB). This paper presented "a new approach to the problem of the vibrating string, where the string is first represented as a discrete system of <i>n</i> particles, and <i>n</i> is then allowed to tend to infinity. Using this method Lagrange argued that Euler was right to allow a large class of 'functions,' both 'continuous' and 'discontinuous,' as solutions of the problem, whereas D'Alembert had maintained that only 'continuous functions' (that is, curves expressed by a single equation) could count as solutions" (<i>Princeton Companion</i>, p. 751). <br/><br/> "Work of the same order is presented in 'Nouvelles recherches sur la nature et la propagation du son' and 'Additions aux premiéres recherches,' both published in volume 2 of the <i>Mélanges</i>. His most important contribution to this volume, though, is 'Essai d'une nouvelle méthode pour déterminer les maxima et les minima des formules intégrales indéfinies,' a rather brief memoir in which Lagrange published his analytic techniques of the calculus of variations. Here he developed the insights contained in his Latin letter to Euler of 1755 and added two appendixes, one dealing with minimal surfaces and the other with polygons of maximal area. Although published in 1762, the memoir and its first appendix were written before the end of 1759. <br/><br/> "'Application de la méthode précédente à la solution de différens problèmes de dynamique' made the principle of least action, joined with the theorem of <i>forces vives</i> (or <i>vis viva</i>), the very foundation of dynamics. Rather curiously, Lagrange no longer used the expression "least action", which he had employed until then, a minor failing due, perhaps, to the death of Maupertuis. This memoir heralded the <i>Mécanique analytique</i> of 1788 in its style and in the breadth of the author's views. <br/><br/> "Volume 3 of the <i>Mélanges de Turin</i> contains 'Solution de différents problèmes de calcul integral.' An early section treats the integration of a general affine equation of arbitrary order. Lagrange here employed his favorite tool, integration by parts. He reduced the solution of the equation with second member to that of the equation without second member. This discovery dates-as we know from the correspondence with d'Alembert-from about the end of 1764" (DSB). Goldstine points out that this paper also contains a profound study of the question of which functions are representable as Fourier series (although Lagrange does not address the question of convergence) - more than half a century before Fourier. "The question which I need to examine here consists of determining if all the curves which are possible solutions of the vibrating string problem as set out on M. D'Alembert's theory are representable or not [as Fourier series]" (quoted in Goldstine, p. 155). <br/><br/> Volume 3 also contain five papers by Euler. <br/><br/> H. With an engraved portrait frontispiece and 3 engraved maps, two of which are quite large and folding. With all half-titles. Large 4to, in the very rare complete original bindings. The books are very handsomely bound in fine contemporary full polished calf, the covers framed with elaborate gilt rolled borders surrounding borders made of multiple gilt tools, gilt ruled edges, the spines with handsome gilt decorated panel designs within compartments featuring elaborate borders and central gilt ornaments, black morocco lettering labels gilt decorated and stamped and with beautifully marbled end-leaves. vii, [13], 704; [iix], 640; [vi], 640; viii, [8]; 620; [viii], 684; [x], 646, general index, pp. A fine and very handsome set, excellently preserved and internally still crisp and unusually clean and fresh. Finding sets of Gibbon which have not been re-backed or rebound is a daunting task. Thus, copies in original calf of the period are truly elusive. This copy is especially well preserved and has only minor expert and very skillful strengthening or restoration. This binding work is nearly imperceptible and is not obtrusive in any way, but rather, restores the books to their original grandeur and strength. AN IMPORTANT AND EARLY ISSUANCE OF THE GREATEST HISTORICAL WORK EVER UNDERTAKEN, A COPY IN RARELY ENCOUNTERED &#147;PRESENTATION&#148; BINDINGS OF FULL DELUXE CONTEMPORARY POLISHED CALF, BEAUTIFULLY GILT DECORATED. Volumes four through six are first editions, the first three volumes being very early printings. As the first volume was printed in a first edition of only 1000 copies (the original plan was for only 500), it is rare to find complete sets of first editions. The success of the work was immediate. "I am at a loss," Gibbon wrote, "how to describe the success of the work without betraying the vanity of the writer. The first impression was exhausted in a few days; a second and third edition were scarcely adequate to the demand, and the bookseller&#39;s property was twice invaded by the pyrates of Dublin. My book was on every table, and almost on every toilette...." Publication of this grand work placed Gibbon at the "very head of the literary tribe" in Europe, according to Adam Smith.<br> "For twenty-two years Gibbon was a prodigy of steady and arduous application. His investigations extended over almost the whole range of intellectual activity for nearly fifteen-hundred years. And so thorough were his methods that the laborious investigations of German scholarship, the keen criticisms of theological zeal, and the steady researches of (two) centuries have brought to light very few important errors in the results of his labors. But it is not merely the learning of his work, learned as it is, that gives it character as a history. It is also that ingenious skill by which the vast erudition, the boundless range, the infinite variety, and the gorgeous magnificence of the details are all wrought together in a symmetrical whole. It is still entitled to be esteemed as the greatest historical work ever written" (Adams, Manual of Historical Literature, pp. 146-147).

Ningún bibliógrafo sabe cuantas láminas llegaron a imprimirse.

Bibliotheca Classica; or, a Classical Dictionary, containing all the Names in antient Authors. [With] Tables of Coins, Weights and Measures in Use among the Greeks and Romans. AN INSPIRATION TO KEATS IN NINETEENTH-CENTURY FAUX-VELLUM

Reading Printed for T. Cadell 1788 - 8vo., First Edition, on laid paper, neat eighteenth-century signature on title, some light age-staining (mainly marginal); firmly bound in nineteenth-century faux-vellum BY MYERS OF READING, sides with double frame border in gilt and red, back with five flat bands ruled in gilt, second compartment lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers, uncut, last few leaves of Tables chipped and dog-eared (but without material loss), lower margins of same leaves lightly damp-marked in blank margins, very neatly recased else a well-preserved crisp, clean copy. With the errata leaf at end. With the nineteenth-century engraved armorial bookplate of Sir James R Andrew Clark, and the binder's ticket, on front paste-down. Since it was bound by Myers it may well have been sold in the town of publication. 'Lempriere's Classical Dictionary is the first of a new kind of manual: the rendering of a body of knowledge not easily accessible in any other form into a system of alphabetical articles for the use of those who lack the time or the learning to seek out the sources; the 'Oxford Companion' series is a distinguished descendant'. (Printing & the Mind of Man). Lempriere (c.1765-1824) was born in Jersey and remained a schoolmaster most of his life. QUITE APART FROM ITS INTRINSIC UTILITY, HIS DICTIONARY ACHIEVED IMMORTALITY SINCE IT PROVED AN IMPORTANT SOURCE OF INSPIRATION TO KEATS. Extremely scarce. PMM 376.
