A comparative statement of the two bills, for the better government of the British possessions in India, brought into Parliament by Mr Fox and Mr Pitt second edition

London: J. Debrett 4to (28.5 cm, 11.25"). 39, [1 (blank)] pp.. 1788 Second edition. Sheridan entered Parliament in 1780, crowning his previous career as a successful playwright and theatre manager with a long and distinguished record of public service. He originally read the main portion of this statement before the House of Commons as part of the debate, after noticing that the gentlemen discussing the two bills in question appeared not to have paid "any very minute degree of attention" (p. 6) to the details of either one. The texts of both bills are present here, along with Sheridan's analysis of how each would address "the question of right between the public and the [East India] Company" (p. 39). Recent marbled paper–covered boards, front cover with gilt-stamped leather title label and spine with gilt-stamped leather author label. Half-title and several other pages stamped by a now-defunct institution. Pages with edges untrimmed and a few small spots of staining; mostly, clean.

Porto, Antonio Alvarez Ribeiro, 1788. - Small woodcut vignette on title page. Large woodcut tailpiece at bottom of p. 170 of final section. (2 ll.), xxiii, (1), 132, 192, 170 pp., (1 l.). 4°, contemporary mottled calf (scuffed, minor wear to spine, label missing). Wormhole touching a few letters, otherwise crisp and clean. Overall in very good condition. ---- FIRST EDITION of the first bibliography of historical medicine in Portuguese. The preliminary leaves evaluate the status of medical history and bibliography. Part 1 describes the history of medicine to 1600; part 2, its history from 1600 to 1731; the third, its history from 1731 to 1783. Each is a narrative with copious annotations, including bibliographical citations. The work was based on Portal's @Histoire de l'anatomie et de la chirurgie, Paris 1770-1773, but has substantial additions on Portuguese medicine and on the years 1773-1783. A contemporary review (quoted extensively in Innocêncio) lamented its lack of an index but nevertheless described it as "digno de louvor," and Ferreira de Mira's history of Portuguese medicine cites it numerous times, with respect for the author's evaluations. The author was an army surgeon and a public-health official.---- Innocêncio VI, 101: noting that he had only seen 2 or 3 copies.

Paris, Lottin & Lottin. 1788. 4to., with a woodcut impression of the arms of the French East India Company on title-page, 103 + (1) + 24pp., with a large folding table, well bound fairly recently in marbled boards with morocco spine label lettered in gilt, uncut. A fine, large, copy. First edition: rare. Goldsmiths 13586. James Ford Bell H.38. Not in Kress, Einaudi, Mattioli, or N.E-H.A. (Amsterdam). OCLC locates 7 copies worldwide. A substantial paper relating to the termination of the old Compagnie des Indes and the creation of the new one. The author pleads the case for the continuation of the old company: 'La Compagnie existe & son existence est la propriété de plusieurs milliers d'hommes. (p.4). The life of the Compagne française des Indes orientales was a short one after Lord Clive's largely successful anti-French campaigns in India. Louis XVI decided to nationalise the Company's assets and, between 1769 and about 1790 most of these assets were taken over by the French government at often a derisory low value. The Company was finally wound up in 1795.

The most comprehensive collection of document pertaining to the trial initiated by Columbus´ heirs against the Spanish Crown –and between themselves- in regards to his inheritance, and the contract signed prior to the discovery of America. The lawsuit began shortly after the male line disappeared, following the death of the last descendant in 1578; what followed was one of the longest trials in history. “Diego Columbus, the great-grandson of Christopher, died in 1578, and with him the male line became extinct, thus beginning one of the most famous lawsuits of History.” (Maggs). The volume contains interesting documents as Columbus´ two wills, and a folding genealogical table of the family. Signers of the documents and petitioners include Mariano Colon de Larreategui, Pasqual Benito Belbis de Moncada, Juan de la Cruz, Jacobo Stuard Colon de Portugal, Duque de Veragua, Carlos FitzJames y Colon, Carlota Stolberg, and others. The work is dated at the end, Madrid, January 1788, signed by Joaquin Caudevilla y Escudero and other lawyers. A feather has been laid-in at pp. 364-5, marking the beginning of "A Vocabulary of the Pelew Language," and a lengthy manuscript addition across the bottom margins of both pages -- an early hand, and trimmed close along the bottom edge, it records an account from an officer on board the Panther, describing the Pelew monarch's devastated response to the news of the death of his son, Le Boo. A few more instances of discreet notations alongside the printed marginalia, all of it tidy (even pleasing), in black ink. An unique, handsome copy.

Berlin: George Jacques Decker, 1782.

First edition, extremely rare separately-paginated offprint, of this work in which Lagrange introduced the potential function of a system of gravitationally-interacting bodies and gave the first proof of his general laws of motion, now called the 'Lagrange equations,' which were to play a central role in his masterpiece, <i>Mécanique Analitique</i> (1788). "Lagrange's work on the libration of the Moon was significant mainly because of the mathematical tools he used to study it, rather than for the results themselves. In his treatment of this particular problem from celestial mechanics, he derived general equations that have served as the basis for the study of dynamical systems ever since" (Linton, p. 320). The present work was published in <i>Nouveaux memoires de l'Académie des sciences et belles-lettres</i> (Berlin), 11 (1782), pp. 203-309. OCLC lists copies of this offprint at Berlin and Utrecht only (no copies in US).<br/><br/> "Lagrange's interest in celestial mechanics was stimulated by the Paris Academy prize contest of 1764, for which it was asked, '<i>whether it can be explained by any physical reason why the Moon always presents the same face to us; and how, by observations and by theory, it can be determined whether the axis of this planet is subject to some proper movement similar to that which the axis of the earth is known to perform, producing precession and nutation</i>.' Lagrange successfully resolved the first issue and won the prize" (Linton, p. 319). Lagrange's paper was published in 1777 as 'Recherches sur la libration de la lune, dans lesquelles on tâche de résoudre la Question proposée par l'Académie Royale des Sciences pour le Prix de l'année 1764,' <i>Recueil des pieces qui ont remporté les prix de l'Académie Royale des Sciences 9, pièces de</i> 1764, '65, '66, '70, '72, pp. 1-50. <br/><br/> "The physical cause of the equality between the length of a lunar day and a lunar month had been given by Newton, who argued, by analogy with the tides on the Earth, that the Moon would not be spherical but a spheroid, the greatest diameter of which, if produced, would pass through the centre of the Earth. The Moon could be in equilibrium only in this position, and any small displacement would result in slow oscillations about this configuration. Despite the efforts of people such as D'Alembert, no one had developed a theory capable of analysing such motions. What Lagrange accomplished was the development of a method by which the period of these so-called librations could be determined ...<br/><br/> "His approach was founded on a combination of Maupertuis' principle of rest and d'Alembert's principle of virtual velocities, and served as a cornerstone for all Lagrange's subsequent work on dynamics. As well as the details of the celestial mechanics, Lagrange's essay contains technical explanations of the procedures he was using, and in particular provided an outline of the derivation of what we now refer to as 'Lagrange's equations of motion.' <br/><br/> "Lagrange derived the differential equations of motion for the non-spherical Moon from his new principle, and went on to show that the physical libration of the Moon should have a period of 119 months. He could not, however, explain another phenomenon - concerning the orientation of the axis of rotation of the Moon - discovered by G. D. Cassini and subsequently confirmed by Mayer. Cassini observed that the mean plane of the equator of the Moon made a constant angle with the ecliptic plane, that angle being 2° 30'. Furthermore, the line of intersection of these two planes is also the line of nodes of the orbit of the Moon, with the ascending node of the orbit corresponding to the descending node of the equator. Lagrange could find no reason from his analysis why this should be so. <br/><br/> "Lagrange gave a more complete solution in 1780 [in the offered paper], by which time he had improved and generalized his analytic methods considerably, and presented a formal derivation of his fundamental dynamical equations ... Lagrange introduced what we would now call a 'potential function.' Defining <i>L = T - V</i>, where <i>T</i> is the kinetic energy and <i>V</i> is the potential, Lagrange expressed the equations of motion of any system of bodies in the form now known as Lagrange's equations ...<br/><br/> "By an expeditious choice of variables, Lagrange derived differential equations that enabled him to show that the angular distance of the Moon from the mean ascending node of its orbit had to be the same as the mean angular distance of the prime meridian of the Moon from the node of the lunar equator. This is precisely what Cassini had observed, and thus once more, what had presented itself as an apparently arbitrary fact turned out to be a consequence of universal gravitation" (Linton, pp. 320-1). <br/><br/> C. M. Linton, <i>From Eudoxus to Einstein: A History of Mathematical Astronomy</i>, 2007.. 4to (256 x 210 mm), pp. [1-3] 4-109, [3:blank], contemporary calf, richly gilt spine, some wear and 1-2 cm loss of leather to botton and top parts of spine, hinges a little worn but still strong, three book plates to front paste down, internally fine and fresh.         Ruine einer antiken römischen Villa.

. Bleistift, auf cremefarbenem Pauspapier. 15,7:31,6 cm. S. 74.. Hier begegnete ihm J.A. Götzloff (1799-1866), A.L. Richter (1803-1884), J.H. Schilbach (1798-1851) u. a.

[Paris?]: [no publisher],, 1788. [bound after 2 other works:] Le conciliateur ou lettres d'un ecclesiastique à un Magistrat sur les affaires présentes. No place: no publisher, 1788. Lettres sur les Grains. Ecrites a M. l'abbe Terray, contrôleur général, par M. Turgot, intendant de Limoges. No place: no publisher, [1770-71?]. 3 works, octavo (191 × 119 mm). Contemporary French sheep-backed marbled boards, decorative gilt spine, red morocco label, red speckled edges. Single wormhole through top panel of spine, Reflexions bound without the half-title. A superb volume containing of some of Turgot's rarest works. The Conciliateur, written with Loménie de Brienne, deals with the problem of religious toleration, here present in second edition, first published in "Rome" in 1754. The Réflexions, first serialised in the Ephémérides du Citoyen, is a milestone in the history of economic thought, which exerted a major influence on Adam Smith. Written in 1766, it first appeared in 1769?-70 in the Ephémérides du citoyen, and is here present in its first book edition. "The Réflexions is a remarkable book, containing not only the skeleton of the structure of Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations, particularly the concept of the division of labor, the distinction between the market and the natural equilibrium price of commodities, and the stress on the volume of real savings as the prime determinant of an economy's rate of growth, but going beyond Adam Smith in the analysis of the relation between profit and interest and the clear statement of the law of diminishing returns in agriculture" (Blaug, Great economists before Keynes, pp. 254-255). "Two young Chinamen, who had been brought to France and educated by Jesuits, were sent back to Canton with a royal annuity, to maintain a correspondence upon the state of literature and science in China" (Palgrave III, 592). Turgot wrote this treatise for them, his most considerable work in economic speculation. The work is divided into 100 sections in which he traces the existence of commerce to (i) the unequal distribution of land, (ii) the diversity of the soil in fitness for production, (iii) the multiplicity of human needs, and (iv) the advantages of the division of labour, which he illustrates by examples. Il n'y a de revenu que le produit net des terres', are in harmony with those of the Physiocrats; it was only his repugnance to all 'sects' that kept him aloof from the inner circle of the school. The Lettres sur les Grains reprints Turgot's correspondence with the Abbé Terray on the subject of the corn trade. In 1770-1771 Turgot found his generality menaced by famine. Rigorously enforcing the unfettered movement of corn within the district, he trusted with confidence to an influx of corn and to its commercial distribution where it was most required, as evidenced by the height of prices. At this period, he addressed to Abbé Terray, then controller-general, seven letters on the corn trade, of which three are lost. In these letters he examined the ill effects of legal restrictions upon the free circulation of corn throughout the country, and strenuously pleaded for free trade.

Literatur: Huber 20 ; Nagler I, S. 427; Le Blanc 26; Boerner 1979, 73. Illustration zu: Titus Livius: A urbe condita.
