First edition of Lagrange's two most important works contemporarily bound. The <i>Méchanique</i> is "perhaps the most beautiful mathematical treatise in existence. It contains the discovery of the general equations of motion, the first epochal contribution to theoretical dynamics after Newton's <i>Principia</i>" (Evans). This book developed with care and completeness the characteristic definition and method in terms of 'fonctions derives,' based upon Taylor's series, which Lagrange had proposed in 1772... Lagrange's <i>Théorie des fonctions</i> was only one, but by far the most important, of many attempts made about this time to furnish the calculus with a basis which would logically modify or supplant those given in terms of limits and infinitesimals." III. Sermons. - IV. Letters. With a life of the author, written by himself. Sterne, writer and Church of England clergyman, who was buried on 22 March (1768) in St George's burial-ground in Paddington. However, his body was stolen from the grave, probably in the night after its burial, and taken to Cambridge to be anatomized. It is said that the professor of anatomy, Dr Charles Collignon, recognized the body and had it sent back to Paddington to be reburied. No marker was placed on this new burial place. In 1969, just prior to the indiscriminate disposal of the remains when the site was to be redeveloped, Kenneth Monkman recovered what is believed to be Sterne's skull (with the top sawn off, indicating purchase by medical students), and this was reburied in the graveyard of St Michael's Church, Coxwold, just across the road from Shandy Hall (see The Shandean, 10, 1998, 45–79).         The Death of Captain Cook by the Natives of Owhyhee

London: C.Cooke, 31 October, 1788. Engraving, 155 x 215 mm (plate size), early hand-colouring; slight foxing, but very good. Hand-coloured. An attractive and rather uncommon version of Webber's death of Captain Cook, newly engraved by William Grainger, with good early hand-colouring. Although in a reduced format, the engraving is neatly executed, and the use of simple colouring is very effective. Grainger is known to have collaborated with the publisher Cooke on many popular works in the late 1780s and 1790s.Known to Beddie from copies in the Mitchell and Dixson collections, it is also held in the National Library of Australia; nonetheless, this popular version of the infamous scene is quite rare.

A Visit to the Child at Nurse

Published by John Raphael Smith, London 1788 - Colour printed mezzotint with added hand colour. In good condition. A lovely colour printed impression of this charming print by Ward depicting one of George Morland's famous domestic scenes. Hiring a wet nurse was a common practice in both England and France during the 17th, 18th and early 19th centuries. They were primarily employed by aristocratic women, the theory being that breast feeding spoiled your figure. It had also been observed that breast feeding had a contraceptive effect, and in those days of high infant mortality, a noblewoman was expected to produce many children. Morland's scene demonstrates one of the dangers of these arrangements, as the baby clings to his nurse in fear of the embrace of his fashionable mother. The fashionable older sister is especially well depicted. George Morland was one of the most successful genre painters of his time, creating, during his industrious career, some of England's most cherished paintings. At an early age Morland displayed his artistic genius, he learned to paint at three and exhibited his first work at the Royal Academy at the mere age of ten. He was a prodigious painter, producing more than 4000 paintings during the entirety of his career, and sometimes painting two or three works in a day. His beautiful idealistic scenes were a favorite source of inspiration for contemporary engravers, and as many as 250 separate engravings were done of his paintings during his lifetime. His brother-in-law, William Ward, engraved a great number of his paintings reproducing in print his endearing paintings of English country life. Ward's engravings after Morland are some of the most beautiful prints of the period; they combine fine technical skill and inspired artistic imagination to create enduring images that speak of the taste and beauty of the age.

Accedunt deperditorum dramatum fragmenta. Ex editione Rich. Franc. Phil. Brunck [Three Volumes]

Argentorati [Strasbourg]: 1788. Three quarter maroon morocco over marbled boards ruled in gilt, four raised bands, compartments paneled in gilt, gilt titles, all edges marbled, marbled endpapers. A very good set, boards rubbed, spines lighlty sunned, boards on final volume with repaired paper splits. 8vo. One of only 250 copies printed. "...elle est assez recherchée," Brunet. Didbin wrote "The popularity of Brunck's edition was very great; and was exceeded by no work to which that celebrated name was attached. But the dearness of the quarto edition prevented many from purchasing it. Brunck, therefore, brought out an octavo edition, in three vols. 1786-8: containing the Scholia and indexes, fully as complete as the quarto. In the year 1789 [this edition date 1788] he published another octavo edition, in three vols., very handsomely printed, of which only 250 copies were struck off, at his own expense. In this latter edition, the Scholia of Triclinius, and other recent scholia, are omitted, and some fresh notes are added," (Rare & Valuable Editions of Greek and Latin Classics, 4th ed.,Vol. 2, p.415). Richard Francis Frederick Brunck (1729-1803), a celebrated Greek scholar and critic, had such admiration of the authors he edited that he conceived their writings to have been originally immaculate, and therefore attributed to the copyists whatever errors he discovered. Scarce. OCLC shows only five complete sets: BL, BN France, Nat. Lib. Denmark, Brown, Univ. Nebraska; also one in the Nat. Lib. of Greece. Brunet V: 449.

OPERE TEATRALI DEL SIGNOR AVVOCATO CARLO GOLDONI VENEZIANO CON RAMI ALLUSIVI

Venezia, dalle stampe di Antonio Zatta e figli, 1788-1795. In-16 gr. (10 volumi) - ?"Commedie buffe in prosa?" (12 volumi) - ?"Commedie e tragedie in versi?" (12 volumi) - ?"Drammi giocosi?" (10 volumi).

Apart from moderate foxing to the half title and very mild occasional foxing within, a very good copy - clean, bright and unmarked - of a rare 1788 commentary on British royal prerogative, then one of the central features of Great Britain's governance, published at a time when the debate over ratification of the US Constitution was in full swing, with a great deal of focus on which powers were given to the federal government and which were reserved to the citizenry. For example, in his fiery June 1788 oration to Virginia's ratifying convention, Patrick Henry cited the concept of royal prerogative in Europe in railing against the 'absurdity' of not including a Bill of Rights with the Constitution. In Great Britain, a 'country which is said to be in such full possession of freedom,' Patrick said, 'all rights not expressly and unequivocally reserved to the people, are impliedly and incidentally relinquished to rulers, as necessarily inseparable from the delegated powers.' There were numerous favorable reviews of this work in 1788 publications - e.g., The Monthly Review (R. Griffiths: London), Vol. 79, p. 374; The Analytical Review (J. Johnson: London), Vol. 2, p. 81; and The Scotts Magazine (Murray and Cochrane: Edinburgh), Vol 50, p. 555 - yet the book is quite rare, with no copies listed worldwide by OCLC or Copac. Especially unusual for a publication of this period, even the English Short Title Catalog carries no listings, and American Book Prices Current records no appearance of the title at auction in the last quarter-century. ~YYY~ . Very Good. 1788. First Edition.

Madrid, Joaquín Ibarra, 1783-1788 - Fol. mayor (35,4 x 25,6 cm). 4 vols. First French edition, first issue. Haberkamp p. 241. Köchel 6 p. 478. Johansson: French Music Publishers' Catalogues of the Second Half of the Eighteenth Century, p. 53. RISM M6323 (4 copies only, none in the U.S.). The first issue of 1788 carries a printed price of "4lt 4s." The second issue carries a printed price of "6lt." The erasures of the original prices on all but one part of the present copy, coupled with the manuscript addition of "6lt" on one of the parts, would suggest that this copy was offered for sale shortly before the publication of the second issue.

LE PRÉFET APOSTOLIQUE, AUX COLONS DE L'ISLE DE FRANCE [caption title]

Isle de France: Imprimerie Royale, 1788.. Broadsheet, 12 3/4 x 8 inches. Folio. Moderate wear and soiling, small hole in center of sheet, affecting a few letters of text. Good. Early and unrecorded imprint from the colonial press at the French colony of Mauritius, also known as the Ile de France. The text contains the articles for establishing a Bureau de Charité for the island. The Dutch were the first Europeans to become interested in the island, taking possession in 1598. After exploiting the island's dense forests for a century and introducing the cultivation of sugar cane and cotton, in 1710 the Dutch abandoned the colony. The French soon claimed it as "Ile de France," and the island remained under the control of the French East India Company until 1767. During the long war between France and England at the beginning of the 19th century, Mauritius proved to be an important strategic naval base, and as a result the British took charge of the island in 1810, and the Treaty of Paris confirmed official British possession in 1814. It remained an important sugar producing colony, and in the 20th century agricultural production was expanded to include tea, rice, and other produce. Printing began on Mauritius in 1768. During the French period, until 1810, only about 400 imprints were produced, mostly in the form of official documents and newspapers, though there are also almanacs and a few other items. All are quite rare. No copies located in OCLC, and not recorded by Toussaint in his bibliography of Mauritius imprints.

A comprehensive abstract of the three Bristol police, and regulation acts passed in the fifth sessions of the sixteenth parliament of Great Britain, and the twenty-eighth year of the reign of our sovereign Lord George the IIId. King of Great Britain, etc. etc. Anno Domini, 1788.

Bristol: Printed by G. Routh, for Sam Johnson, Bookseller, Corn-Street. n.d. [1788]. - 8vo. [5],6-73,[1]pp. Bound in nineteenth century brown cloth. Two broadsides advertising a Newspaper by W. Routh, one dated June 21, 1788 and the other 1788 have been used as wrappers. In both cases most but not all of the text is legible. A very good copy. MH-BA only in ESTC on-line. The "Advertisement" is dated Bristol, August 3, 1788. "The three late Bristol acts, are so very important in their consequences .that the following abstract is published with the sole view of rendering them as generally and expediously known as possible. The words of the legislature are no where changed; and the abridgment is so very comprehensive, that the technical phraseology of the profession and repetitions of the same words are the chief things curtailed, which it is hoped will be considered rather an advantage than otherwise, as by this means, common understandings are not so liable to be confounded by tautology and terms of law." The police acts cover a wide range of subjects from obstructions, annoyances, nuisances, licensing hackney coaches, shipping, quays, street widening, party-wall regulations and fire prevention.

XVI, 126 S., 1 Bl. Pappband d. Zt.. ADB XXIX, 122; Proksch I, 516.
