        Servius Tullius".

      - Kupferstich in Punktiermanier, 1788, von D. Berger (1744-1824), auf festem Velin. 38,3:42,2 cm. Literatur: Huber 20 ; Nagler I, S. 427; Le Blanc 26; Boerner 1979, 73. Illustration zu: Titus Livius: A urbe condita.

The temporal government of the Pope's State

A comprehensive, damning, and seemingly reasonably objective survey of the civil administration and political economy of the Vatican State during the papacy of Pius VI (1775-1799). The book was dedicated by the author to Frederick Augustus Hervey, 4th Earl of Bristol, eccentric absentee Bishop of Derry, and serial visitor to Italy (see, e.g. Ingamells p.126 et seq.]. The thirty chapters examine the inner workings of an influential but generally unpopular Papacy. Subjects examined, and objectively commented upon, include Papal finance, departments of state and the relevant officers and officials, including ministers, the governor of Rome, the Pope's auditor, the Cardinal Vicar, Rota, treasurer, the Sagra Consulta, the President of the public streets, the prefect of the Archives, the President of the Mint, of the Quays and of the Prisons, the Majordomo of the Pontifical Palace, of the Congregation del Buon Governo, &c. &c. There are other chapters on agriculture and "bad air", manufactures, commerce, justice, and even nepotism. The name of Pope Pius VI is associated with many and often unpopular attempts to revive the splendour of Pope Leo X in the promotion of art and public works. He is best remembered in connection with the establishment of the Vatican Museum, and with an impractical and expensive attempt to drain the Pontine marshes, He has been accused of having led a futile and immoral life, of having neglected his duties and of having been bad tempered and even brutal with his attendants.Denham concludes his survey by observing that "the peculiar infelicity of the papal government, so manifestly demonstrated in this work, will naturally prompt a curious enquirer to search for some principle in human nature to account for it". And he concludes with damning clarity. "However they may be supposed to promote the good of souls, their want of a proper relation, and their own particular insulated situation, never to be altered, depriving them of sympathy, must generally produce an insensibility to the misery of others. Whether this be a proper solution of the phenomenon or not, philosophers will judge. Facts evince, that priests so circumstanced, are by no means qualified to govern in temporal matters".8vo., xii + 268pp., wanting front free endpaper, contemporary calf, spine simply gilt and labelled.

Paris Moutard: then Moutard et Letellier: then Maradan 1788 - 1788-1795. 18 vols, nice set in contemp. tree-calf, triple gilt fillet, flat spine gilt, twin labels, sl wear, minor cracks in joints The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (1776-88). PMM 222. Vols I-III are in the translation by Leclerc de Septchênes, who had been tutor to the Dauphin (became king as Louis XVI in 1774). The first ébauche of his translation appeared as a 12mo volume in 1776, reputedly translated with the assistance of his royal pupil. He sent a copy to Gibbon, who replied with great praise and enthusiasm (Dec.1776; Letters II, 131) and offered, if he were sent the proofs, to make observations on the continuation; he also wonders if his chapters 15-16 [on Christianity] could be published in France. De Septchênes did continue, publishing 3 vols 8vo in 1776, of which this set contains the second edition. Given Gibbon's involvement, this is plainly a significant text. Vol.III ends with chaps. 15-16, prefaced with the words: "Le Traducteur n'a pas entendu, dans les Chapitres suivans, adopter tous les principes de l'Auteur, qui est Protestant." The other vols, translated by A.S.M.Cantwell (IV-XI), unattributed (XII), D.M.[Demeunier?] revised by A.M.H.Boulard, are the first editions in French. Norton 81; Miss Norton gives a detailed history of the translation at p.119 ff. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Engraved throughout, including title, dedication with armorial head-piece, 24 leaves of text and 24 engraved plates in full contemporary hand-colouring, numbered 1-24, each with tissue guards on papier de hollande. Folio, 278 x 274 mm, bound in full French 18th-century dark blue morocco, ruled in gilt. Paris: Chez l'auteur, 1788. |~||~||~| First Edition, a superior copy with contemporary hand-colouring to the 24 engraved plates, plus yellow hand-coloured borders to the text. This is the most luxurious issue of this work, printed on papier de Hollande. The plates were commissioned from the Jesuit artist in Peking, Father Jean-Denis Attiret, by the orders of the Emperor Qianlong, to be drawn and engraved in the Western style and based on the Ming work "Dijian tushuo" [The Illustrated Discussion of the Emperor's Mirror], 1573, telling of the heroic deeds of the Emperors of China in parables. Helman was involved in a re-impression of the original French production Suite de Seize estampes representant les conquetes de l'Empereur de la Chine. (Paris, 1775). In 1786 Helman (a pupil of J.P. le Bas who worked on the original plates) published reduced versions with captions in French by which the plates are usually identified by European scholars. According to the title page, this issue was originally priced at 48 livres. The work could also be purchased unbound at 12 livres, in paper wrappers at 13 livres and 10 francs, and unbound but on papier velin at 18 livres. It was to be published in four parts, appearing every two months from 15th April onwards. Cohen-De Ricci 447. Lust 729.

"Extract of a Letter from an Officer in the Botany Bay Fleet" dated Rio De Janeiro. 29 August 1787 [in] The London Chronicle

London: 1 March, 1788. Broadsheet, 8 pp. comprising a complete issue of the London Chronicle, p. 2 with a long letter written from Rio, original tax stamp; excellent. Even the convicts have a dessert after dinner. Rare: a significant letter written from on board one of the ships of the First Fleet at Rio de Janeiro, published in the London Chronicle. Such letters in contemporary journals, indifferently recorded and only very rarely seen, include some of the most candid comments on the voyage of the First Fleet: this letter does not appear to he recorded in the Historical Records of New South Wales or otherwise noted.Rio de Janeiro, writes the correspondent, is 'without exception the pleasantest and most fruitful place in the whole universe; it is now the middle of their winter, yet we have oranges, lemons, limes, olives, coffee, &c. in blossom and in fruit at the same time; oranges are only four-pence per hundred, and even the convicts have a dessert after dinner.' Indeed, as this remarkable comment about convicts indulging in sweets suggests, much of the letter is taken up with fulsome praise of Phillip's care and attention during the voyage. One passage notes: 'He gives them fresh beef every day when in port, and procures them fruits, when to be had. He liberated them all from their irons a week after they left England; in short, he allows them every indulgence which prudence and discretion in our present situation will authorize. It is to this clemency and attention, that we must ascribe the extraordinary good health they have enjoyed since we left England. The sick list at present is not above 30.'Although the letter is full of interesting asides on the conditions aboard, two stories get top billing. The first is the tale of the attempted escape of a convict, who 'attempted his escape at Teneriff, and effected it so far as to land by the help of a small boat, about ten miles from the ship, round the S.W. part of the island; he was taken the next morning by a party of marines, sent on shore for that purpose' (the convict in question was on board the Alexander; see White's Journal, p. 14).The second tale is a benign, even slightly approving, account of the ingenuity with which one of the convicts set about counterfeiting coins: 'one of the convicts felt an inclination to have a little trade with the Portugueze, and... he therefore determined upon a new coinage of dollars... some of the best counterfeited dollars I ever saw; they were so ingeniously executed, so as to render them passable; he coined them out of pewter spoons, and a something that gave them the solidity and lustre of silver; however, an end is put to his plan, and on account of the circulation of his dollars being topped, and his credit not being good in the island, his intended investments cannot be made.' The convict in question was Thomas Barrett, now famous for the Charlotte Medal, recently purchased by the National Maritime Museum of Australia. The letter signs off in the best of good spirits. 'I have the pleasure to acquaint you,' he writes, 'that we have not lost an officer since we left England, and at his moment, we are all in health and spirits. We sail in a day or two for the Cape, where you shall hear from me again. If you are curious to know the occurrences at sea on our passage hither, you shall hear them in a few words. We saw flying fish, caught bonettas, albacoras, &c. &c. and took the Devil.'Neither the original author nor his correspondent is recorded here, and it is not even absolutely clear on which ship the author was sailing, despite the tantalising hints. Generally speaking, there are surprising few comments about anything nautical, but there are more than a few about the sicklist and general health. There is also the glorious tale of Barrett and his counterfeiting, and the tale of the attempted escape in Tenerife, both of which stories were reprinted in White's Journal; indeed, it is White who is thought to have commissioned the Charlotte Medal from his old shipmate Barrett. Taken together, this might suggest that the letter was originally written by John White, but any attribution is likely to remain little more than speculation. The only clue to the recipient is a passing reference in the passage about the good health on board the Fleet, with the note 'that you have not a village on your island (wherein there are an equal number with us) more healthy.'.

Wrexham: Reprinted by R. Marsh, 1788. The Fourth edition. Engraved frontispiece. xxi, 230, (2) pp. 1 vols. Small 8vo. Nineteenth-century brown polished calf, red leather spine label, marbled endpapers, edges stained red. Very pretty copy. "Not only is this the most renowned work on the subject of archery in English, or for that matter in any language, but its publication marked the beginning of the decline of the prejudice in favour of Latin as the literary language of Englishmen for original compositions, the works of Tynedale and Sir Thomas More being the only illustrious predecessors easily recalled. For writing this book and presenting it to the king, Ascham was granted a pension of £10." (Pforzheimer Catalogue). Originally published in 1545, the second edition was issued in 1571 and the third in 1589. Ascham's love of sports is interesting. According to Camden (Annales, 1568) he lived and died a poor man owing to his addiction to dicing and cock-fighting.

First edition. (4), xvi, 383, (1); (4), 259, (1); (4), 292; (4), 366 pp. 4 vols. 8vo. Contemporary quarter leather, pastepaper boards, french tips, flat spines with red leather title and volume labels. Spines rubbed, some minor starting of joints to two volumes, small loss to head of vol. I, a very good contemporary set. Mazzei emigrated to America from Italy in 1773 and introduced the cultivation of grapes and olives to the United States.  He became a neighbor of Jefferson in Virginia, settling near Monticello at Jefferson's request, and this association led to their long friendship and the author's acquaintance with Franklin and Adams.  A staunch Republican, Mazzei took an active role in the Independence movement.  In this work he outlines the history of the American colonies, the causes of the Revolution, and the economy and government of the United States.  Also discussed are Indians, slavery, emigration, and the Society of the Cincinnati. The book was a contemporary success and remains an important work which Malone characterizes as "probably the most reliable of all the works of the period on the United States" (Thomas Jefferson 2:109-110). Jefferson aided Mazzei in the compilation of the work while acting as American minister in Paris.

The Quip Modest, a few words by way of supplement to Remarks, critical and illustrative, on the text and notes of the last edition of Shakspeare; occasioned by a republication of that edition, revised and augmented by the editor of Dodsleys Old plays

London: J. Johnson, 1788. First edition. vii, [1], 32 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Bound in full crimson straight grained morocco, gilt spine, a.e.g., by Riviere & Son. Bookplate of John Crichton-Stuart, 3rd Marquess of Bute. Ritson (1752-1803) was an antiquary and provocative critic who, from 1782, was involved in a number of literary controversies, including an attack upon Thomas Warton, a well-respected and well-liked literary scholar and antiquary, as well as attacks upon Samuel Johnson, George Steevens, Edmund Malone, and others. However In 1795 he detected the Shakespearian forgeries of William Henry Ireland which had fooled many experts, including Samuel Ireland, the forger's father (DNB). In "The Quip Modest" he challenges Isaac Reed's 1785 edition of Shakespeare. Our copy contains the un-cancelled leaf A4, with the reference to George Steevens as an "infamous scoundrel" (p. vii of preface), a leaf subsequently replaced after a small number of copies had been issued, with the comment modified. Similarly, leaf E2 (p. 28) is in its original state, with a sentence critical of George Steevens at foot of the page. Leaf F1, printed later and added to copies, is not present.

Paris: Paris: Mérigot père, 1788. First edition. Illustrated with 25 aquatint plates engraved by Mérigot fils after his drawings, and 2 engraved plates of music. 68 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Contemporary tree calf with gilt-lettered spine. Lovely, fresh copy, plates and text clean and crisp. First edition. Illustrated with 25 aquatint plates engraved by Mérigot fils after his drawings, and 2 engraved plates of music. 68 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Homage to Rousseau: the English Garden at Ermenonville. Beautiful copy of this classic illustrated account of the famous "English garden" - among the earliest of its kind on the Continent - designed by the Marquis Louis-René de Girardin in honor of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, whose vision of nature inspired Girardin and who would spend the last 6 weeks of his life there until his death and burial in the park at Ermenonville in 1778. Carefully conceived, designed and financed by Girardin with the aid of landscape architecte Jean-Marie Morel, the painter Huber Robert, the Abbé Delille, and Scottish gardeners, the park was inspired along the model of the "jardin anglais", where nature is not subordinated to the gardener but is rather carefully allowed the freedom to develop its own natural charm and beauty. It was the first, or at least the most important, such garden on the Continent. Rousseau, who spent the last 6 weeks of his life there, is buried on the Isle of Poplars in the park's lake; his tomb there was designed by the painter Hubert Rober. The park itself is filled with numerous details evocative of the great philosophe and his works. This account of the park - rare in such condition - was written by Louis-René's son, and is far more frequently seen in the second edition of 1811. This First edition, which appeared ten years after Rousseau's death, is rare; and, with its 25 masterful aquatint plates by Merigot, it is quite beautiful, illustrating the stunning vistas and rustic charms of the park which will forever be associated with the name of Jean-Jacques Rousseau.
