Tax no. six. : Commonwealth of Massachusetts. In the year of our Lord, one thousand seven hundred and eighty-eight. An act, for apportioning and assessing a tax of sixty-five thousand pounds four shillings .

Printed by Adams and Nourse, printers to the Honorable General Court, Boston 1788 - 19 p. State seal in midst of title. Act passed March 27, 1788. Signed in print by James Warren, Speaker of the House, Samuel Adams, President of the Senate and approved by John Hancock and attessed to by John Avery, Jun. Secretary. This tax raised money from the towns to operate the government and was enacted just a few months after Massachusetts ratified the U.S. Constitution. Written above the title is "The Assesor of the Town of Machias." The Massachusetts General Court incorporated Machias as a town on June 23, 1784. It first encompassed present-day East Machias, Whitneyville, Machias and Marshfield. It was the first town incorporated between the Penobscot and the St. Croix rivers. The first naval battle of the American Revolution was the Battle of Machias. Machias is now located in the State of Maine. Maine was part of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts until 1820, when it voted to secede from Massachusetts. On March 15, 1820, it was admitted to the Union as the 23rd state under the Missouri Compromise. A bit tattered, small tears and mild staining and notes in pencil on front page. Robert Burns, Autograph Letter Signed (ALS) June 14, 1788

Ellisland, England, 1788. Autograph Letter Signed (ALS). Good/No Jacket. Autograph Letter Signed from Robert Burns to Robert Ainslie, June 14, 1788. One-page, on verso only. Letter is torn at edges, missing portion of right edge with one word missing because of tear. Folded and worn with minor additional loss of writing in middle of letter. Toning throughout. Burns had recently moved to the 170 acre farm, Ellisland and was going through a period of adjustment. Robert Ainslie a student of the law and much younger than Burns would become a close friend and confidant. Letter is not addressed but is documented in J. De Lancey Ferguson's "Letters of Robert Burns". Ferguson states that Ainslie allowed his friends's letters later to be published. The letter is transcribed in total in Ferguson's book and in Cromek in 1808 and evidently in Gebbie and Hunter in 1886. A portion of the manuscript of this letter was said to be at Eastern Illinois State Normal School (Eastern Illinois State University) but no record was found (Ferguson, Volume 1, 1931). '...I hate the language of complaint--Job, or some of his friends, says well, "why should a living man complain?" The letter goes on to ask Ainslie about "What books are you reading, or what is the subject of your thoughts, beside the great studies of your Profession?" Photos upon request.

Trenton, (NJ): Printed by Isaac Collins, 1788. First edition. 8vo. (51) pp. "Minto was a Scottish mathematician and astronomer who emigrated to America in 1786 . [The following year] he was named professor of mathematics and natural philosophy in the College of New Jersey, where he remained until his death nine years later" (Felcone). Evans 21260. Karpinski 87: "The first American contribution to the history of mathematics." Felcone 140: "The first American contribution to the history of mathematics, as well as the earliest American analysis and appreciation of the work of Isaac Newton." Noll "Princeton and the Republic, 1768-1822": "[Minto's] inaugural address exhibited a method of uniting natural philosophy and natural theology that, if it did not use language customary to all the trustees, still won their approval. Minto's address offered an occasion to rehearse the slow advance of the human mind until the recent unfolding of the active genius of man with Copernicus, Descartes, and others who paved the way for Isaac Newton, 'a man without an equal in the history of human genius.'" Full descriptions of the 29 pamphlets and handbills bound with the Minto oration, many of which seem to be quite scarce, will be provided upon request. Owner's stamp on front pastedown. Very good.       1788 - First Boston Edition of Adams's Defence of the Constitutions Adams, John [1735-1826]. A Defence of the Constitutions of Government of the United States of America. London, Printed; Boston: Re-Printed and Sold by Edmund Freeman, 1788. xxx, 317 pp. 12mo (6-1/2" x 4"). Recent period-style calf, raised bands and lettering piece to spine. With six-page subscriber list that includes John Hancock, Levi Lincoln, Theophilus Parsons, Theodore Sedgwick and other distinguished New Englanders. Adams wrote this fundamental contribution to American political theory when he was the American ambassador at the Court of St. James. First published in London, the Defence was a profound influence on the delegates to the Constitutional Convention of 1787 and the framers of several post-Revolutionary state constitutions. It also did much to familiarize Europeans with the novel political events taking place in America. Adams intended the Defence to be a one-volume work. He added two more volumes in 1787 and 1788 to offer more examples and address issues raised by critics. The first volume, reprinted from the London edition, was reprinted in New York and Philadelphia in 1787 and Boston in 1788. OCLC locates 4 copies of the 1788 Boston edition in North American law libraries (Harvard, Library of Congress, Social Law, University of Maine). Cohen, Bibliography of Early American Law 2734.         [WF 83] Der Soldat [song for voice and piano; text by Adelbert von Chamisso]. Autograph musical manuscript, unsigned and undated, but December 1899. 4 pp. Together with fragments of two additional compositions.

. Folio, 356 x 270 mm. 2 leaves, notated on a bifolium of 16-staff "B & H Nr. 3. C" music paper. Unpaginated. Recto and verso of first leaf: "Der Soldat. Chamisso." Song for alto voice and piano, with text underlay in German cursive. Parts marked in German ("Alt"; "Klav[ier]). Time signature: C; key signature: 4 flats, for F minor (albeit with final chord on the dominant). Sixty-five measures (10 systems). A draft of the complete song. 2 pp. Notated in pencil, with three barlines doubled in ink. Recto of second leaf: untitled fragment of fugue "Kyrie eleison" for mixed choir (SATB), probably a cappella. Time signature: C; key signature: 2 flats, for G minor. Eighteen measures (4 systems, increasingly sketchy, incomplete). Notated in pencil. Verso of second leaf: untitled fragment of homophonic chorus (SATB) a cappella. Time signature: C; key signature: 5 flats, for D-flat major. Eight completed measures (2 systems), with clefs for 2 more systems indicated (staves blank). Text: "Erinnerung" (Memory) by Joseph von Eichendorff (1788-1857); incipit: "Lindes Rauschen in den Wipfeln..." (Soft rustle in the tree tops...). Incomplete. Notated in pencil, with text underlay in a different (more mature) hand. Slightly soiled and creased; some staining to edges; occasional foxing; two small tears to blank edges; lower outer corners slightly creased and chipped; central fold with very small split to both head and tail.. Der Soldat is unpublished, but has been recorded (see the article on Furtwängler in German Wikipedia). A fair copy, in ink and bearing a dedication "To my mother on Christmas 1899," is held at the Zurich Central Library (see the Nachlassverzeichnis Wilhelm Furtwängler on the library's website, p. 46). The poem "Der Soldat" (1833) is by Adelbert von Chamisso (1781-1838), after a Danish original (1830) by Hans Christian Andersen (1805-75). Furtwängler set it in full, albeit with minor changes. Although the vocal staff of "Der Soldat" is designated "alto," its range extends from a to a''; "mezzo-soprano" would be a more fitting designation. The poem was also set by others, most famously Robert Schumann (no. 3 of his Five Songs for Voice and Piano, op. 40, 1840). The choral fragments do not belong to any documented works by Furtwängler. The Kyrie may have been a contrapuntal assignment from Anton Beer-Walbrunn, with whom Furtwängler studied from 1899.

The English Art of Cookery …

London: G. G. J. & J. Robinson,, 1788. being a Complete Guide to all Housekeepers. Octavo. Contemporary sheep, low bands bracketed by single gilt rules, gilt edge-roll, neatly rebacked with the original spine laid down, some restoration to the corners.f 12 engraved plates showing monthly bills of fare. A little rubbed, light browning and a scatter of foxing, but overall a very good copy. First edition. Briggs was employed for many years at the Globe tavern, Fleet Street; the White Hart, Holborn; and the Temple Coffee House, Fleet Street. His "book was aimed at housekeepers and has been described as 'largely a plagiarisation or, more charitably, a competent revision and enlargement' of John Farley's The London Art of Cookery of 1783. However, Briggs's work reveals considerable improvements over Farley's. Cooking times, methods, and quantities of ingredients are often clarified and Briggs includes a wider range of foods—notably fish and vegetables. Interestingly he broke new ground by including recipes for fish rarely mentioned in eighteenth-century cookery books, such as 'To Boil John-a-Dore', a simple recipe remarkably similar to one favoured by James Quin, the actor renowned for his predilection for this fish. Although the book was predominantly about English food there were none the less German, Spanish, West Indian, Italian, Dutch, French, and Jewish influences in the recipes" (ODNB). This uncommon and sought-after first edition has just 11 locations on OCLC. An unusually well-preserved copy in the carefully restored contemporary binding, which gives every sign of the being the trade binding offered at 7s. (see Maclean).

A Collection of Voyages to the Southern Hemisphere ... [long list of voyages]

London: for the editor, 1788. Two volumes, octavo, early bookplate; contemporary tree calf, neatly rebacked with the original gilt spines laid down, double red morocco labels, a little rubbed. c. Callander's important work in an unusual 1788 edition. A very rare version of this important collection of voyage material, gathered partly as background for an early, serious proposal for European settlement of the 'Southern Continent'. The book is normally seen in its three-volume form published between 1766 and 1768, but this 1788 edition must surely have been published in order to fulfil contemporary interest in the Botany Bay venture. There is a copy of this unusual version in the British Library, and it is recorded by Sabin, the bibliographer of Americana, but the only record that we have found of a copy for sale is the entry in Maggs Bros. Voyages and Travels vol. IV part VIII of 1956. This is the only copy of this version that we have seen, here handled by us for the second time. It is not recorded by Ferguson, Davidson, Hill, Petherick, Kroepelien, Edge-Partington, or any of the other standard references consulted. It is evidently a re-issue of remainder sheets of the work, which the publisher has camouflaged with new title-pages and by roughly cancelling the number of the chapter that starts each volume to reduce it to "I".Based on the French account of De Brosses, Callander's collection in this form contains 41 narratives, some for the first time in English, generally prefaced by a general summation and short biography of the narrator. Included are the voyages of Hawkins, Quiros, Spilbergen, Le Maire and Schouten, Jacques l'Hermite, Pelsaert, and Tasman among many others. He argues for the establishment of a penal settlement in the Pacific, to support the further exploration and settlement of New Holland, and claims the inevitability of English occupation of New Holland by virtue of superior sea power. The important final section, "Advantages from the forming of Colonies in the Terra Australis", has been described as 'the fundamental proposal for the first European settlement of the Southern Continent'. Its presence in this version is particularly interesting given that it was published in the year of first settlement of Australia.

Bel exemplaire, bien relie a l'epoque..

Aurelii prudentii Clementis V.C. Opera omnia nunc primum cum codd. Vaticanis collata praefatione, variantibus lectionibus, notis, ac rerum verborumque indice locupletissimo aucta et illustrata

Parmae: Ex Regio typographeo 4to (31.5 cm, 12.5"). 2 vols. I: [12], 71, [1], 302, [2], [303]?-61, [3] pp. II: [4], 215, [1], 219?-84, [2] pp. (text complete despite pagination).. 1788 First edition of Prudentius from the Bodoni press. Prudentius (348 ?- ca. 410) was a Roman Christian poet born in Northern Spain, known for the asceticism he adopted late in life as well as for his lyric (Cathemerinon, Peristephanon), didactic (Apotheosis, Hamartigenia, Psychomachia), and polemical works (Contra Symmachum). The Psychomachia is particularly notable as one of the earliest Western examples of allegorical verse, exerting much influence on the subsequent medieval development of that genre. This is a typically handsome Bodoni production with wide margins, an elegant type, and a different engraved vignette on each title-page; Dibdin calls it ?"one of the most beautiful editions of a classical author I ever beheld.?" Recent half vellum and paper?-covered sides, vellum edges graced with gilt single fillet, spines with gilt-stamped leather title and volume labels and with gilt-stamped Greek key design; binding discolored and a little bubbled from proximity to fire. Edges untrimmed, signatures unopened; vol. I with surprisingly various old waterstaining, sometimes faint and sometimes not, in upper margins of first half and outer margins of last few leaves. Interior of both volumes otherwise clean, with no markings, save that the endpapers are smudged and those untrimmed edges, plus occasional small areas of margin contiguous, are darkly smokestained from that fire. => This is a book that has suffered, yet a production that is still as lovely as Dibdin said it was and a set well worth having.

Sterne, writer and Church of England clergyman, who was buried on 22 March (1768) in St George's burial-ground in Paddington. It is said that the professor of anatomy, Dr Charles Collignon, recognized the body and had it sent back to Paddington to be reburied. No marker was placed on this new burial place. In 1969, just prior to the indiscriminate disposal of the remains when the site was to be redeveloped, Kenneth Monkman recovered what is believed to be Sterne's skull (with the top sawn off, indicating purchase by medical students), and this was reburied in the graveyard of St Michael's Church, Coxwold, just across the road from Shandy Hall (see The Shandean, 10, 1998, 45-79).         The Death of Captain Cook by the Natives of Owhyhee

London: C.Cooke, 31 October, 1788. Engraving, 155 x 215 mm (plate size), early hand-colouring; slight foxing, but very good. Hand-coloured. An attractive and rather uncommon version of Webber's death of Captain Cook, newly engraved by William Grainger, with good early hand-colouring. Although in a reduced format, the engraving is neatly executed, and the use of simple colouring is very effective. Grainger is known to have collaborated with the publisher Cooke on many popular works in the late 1780s and 1790s.Known to Beddie from copies in the Mitchell and Dixson collections, it is also held in the National Library of Australia; nonetheless, this popular version of the infamous scene is quite rare.

A Visit to the Child at Nurse

Published by John Raphael Smith, London 1788 - Colour printed mezzotint with added hand colour. In good condition. A lovely colour printed impression of this charming print by Ward depicting one of George Morland's famous domestic scenes. Hiring a wet nurse was a common practice in both England and France during the 17th, 18th and early 19th centuries. They were primarily employed by aristocratic women, the theory being that breast feeding spoiled your figure. It had also been observed that breast feeding had a contraceptive effect, and in those days of high infant mortality, a noblewoman was expected to produce many children. Morland's scene demonstrates one of the dangers of these arrangements, as the baby clings to his nurse in fear of the embrace of his fashionable mother. The fashionable older sister is especially well depicted. George Morland was one of the most successful genre painters of his time, creating, during his industrious career, some of England's most cherished paintings. At an early age Morland displayed his artistic genius, he learned to paint at three and exhibited his first work at the Royal Academy at the mere age of ten. He was a prodigious painter, producing more than 4000 paintings during the entirety of his career, and sometimes painting two or three works in a day. His beautiful idealistic scenes were a favorite source of inspiration for contemporary engravers, and as many as 250 separate engravings were done of his paintings during his lifetime. His brother-in-law, William Ward, engraved a great number of his paintings reproducing in print his endearing paintings of English country life. Ward's engravings after Morland are some of the most beautiful prints of the period; they combine fine technical skill and inspired artistic imagination to create enduring images that speak of the taste and beauty of the age. Le Blanc IV, p.177, no.116.

A very good set, boards rubbed, spines lighlty sunned, boards on final volume with repaired paper splits. 8vo. One of only 250 copies printed. "...elle est assez recherchée," Brunet. Didbin wrote "The popularity of Brunck's edition was very great; and was exceeded by no work to which that celebrated name was attached. But the dearness of the quarto edition prevented many from purchasing it. Brunck, therefore, brought out an octavo edition, in three vols. 1786-8: containing the Scholia and indexes, fully as complete as the quarto. In the year 1789 [this edition date 1788] he published another octavo edition, in three vols., very handsomely printed, of which only 250 copies were struck off, at his own expense. In this latter edition, the Scholia of Triclinius, and other recent scholia, are omitted, and some fresh notes are added," (Rare & Valuable Editions of Greek and Latin Classics, 4th ed.,Vol. 2, p.415). Richard Francis Frederick Brunck (1729-1803), a celebrated Greek scholar and critic, had such admiration of the authors he edited that he conceived their writings to have been originally immaculate, and therefore attributed to the copyists whatever errors he discovered. Scarce. OCLC shows only five complete sets: BL, BN France, Nat. Lib. Denmark, Brown, Univ. Nebraska; also one in the Nat. Lib. of Greece. Brunet V: 449.
