Manuscript on paper, in German. "Schlüssel zu Irrthum [sic] und Wahrheit

No place [Germany] 8vo (19.5 cm, 7.7"). xi, [5 (blank)], 153 [i.e., 154] pp.. 1788 A German dictionary of philosophy called the "Key to Error and Truth," with copious numerical references (to another text?) and occasional Latin, this is written in a single cursive hand in black ink with red underlining. The text is divided into alphabetical sections with corresponding letters at the top middle of each page, and pagination in the upper outer corner; the title-page is written in neat gothic letters. The preliminary leaves are an index. The paper has a clear watermark dated 1787, showing a man sawing a tree, with the countermark reading "Rethenbach Beys Wolfgang" (?). Provenance: Now missing bookplate (see below) read "Aus der Büchersamlung von Georg Stophel"; acquired by August Neander; later in the Colgate University Library (the Rochester Theological Seminary, later the Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School, deaccessioned 2005). Modern black moiré cloth, gilt leather spine label; damaged in a fire and its aftermath, losing its previous binding, this also lost its previously recorded bookplate and other provenance indicia with only one line of a shelfmark remaining. Translucently waterstained throughout in a W pattern across each opening, handwriting and reading almost miraculously unaffected; now restored to strength and safety for use.

Back tooled raised fillets. Part of title tan morocco. Head cover frayed. Cap tail largely missing. A slot at the bottom. Corners bumped. The top slot at the top jaw. Modest binding.A like the Castle of Otranto Walpole, Underground is one of the first gothic novel, not yet inhabited revenue and stereotypes that exhaust the genre itself, but it already contains all the ingredients that will make Success: spleen, melancholy, fear, decor castle and abbey ruins, secrets lurking on obscure birth. This novel sign above the superiority of the English romantic fiction, and a frame and a much more mature and supplied than was The Castle of Otranto novel writing. Two sisters live in the underground of a castle, the novel gradually deploy the discovery of this strange situation. We read in the historical, literary and anecdotal memories from the correspondence of Diderot and Grimm "is the story of a daughter of Mary and the Duke of Norfolk, a romantic incidents tissues, sad improbable, but whose sequence has yet indescribable charm that can attach readers who like this kind of work. " --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Traduction par De La Marre du roman anglais : the Recess, or a tale of other time (1785). Reliure en demi basane brune à coins d'époque. Dos à nerfs orné de filets. Pièce de titre en maroquin havane. Coiffe de tête élimée. Coiffe de queue en grande partie manquante. Une fente en pied. Coins émoussés. Fente au mors supérieur en tête. Modeste reliure.

Essays on the Active Powers of Man.

Printed for John Bell and G.G.J. & J. Robinson, Edinburgh 1788 - 1 blank leaf + half title + TP + [v]-vii + [1]-493 + [495] = Publisher's Advertisements + 1 blank leaf, Quarto. First Edition. This, Reid's last major work, appeared in the same year as Kant's Critic der praktischen Vernunft: they are related in that both are, broadly, the ethical complement of the authors' earlier works on epistemology. As in Reid's Essays on the Intellectual Powers of Man, the target is Hume. "The sternest of Hume's critics, [Reid] rejects all the variants on the moral sense or sentimentalist themes. It is indeed true that our judgements of moral approbation are accompanied by feelings of approval, when we contemplate some virtuous act. But the judgement is nonetheless a judgment not a feeling . The common sense of mankind reveals to us certain premises or principles as self-evident because presupposed in all that we recognize as rational thought. This is as much true of the first premises of moral discourse as it is of the basic principles of logic and of scientific judgment." (Neil MacCormick, 'Law and Enlightenment', in Campbell and Skinners, eds, The Origins and Nature of the Scottish Enlightenment (Edinburgh, 1982), p 159. The work is further devoted to a defense of free agency against the various forms of determinism. Contemporary half calf with marbled boards with calf edges gilt ruled. Spines decorated blind stamp and gilt lettering and lightly cracked, but extremely firm. A little discolored with joints very lightly rubbed. Bookplate removed from inside front cover, but with another small bookplate remaining there. Light, small early manuscript initials to title page. A bright and clean, wide-margined copy of this last major work by Reid. ADDITIONAL PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. [Attributes: First Edition]

Astronomical Observations made in the Voyages... in the Southern Hemisphere... by Order of the Commissioners of Longitude

London: printed by C. Buckton, sold by P. Elmsley, 1788. Quarto, with two large folding engraved maps, browning and offsetting affecting the title and a few leaves; a very good copy in later full calf, spine elaborately gilt, the Ingleton copy with his bookplate and shelfmark. A major publication of the Endeavour voyage and thus one of the highly select small group of first publications about the east coast of Australia, with exceptionally important charts of the east coast of Australia and New Zealand improved from those originally included in Hawkesworth's publication of the first voyage. This was the first major scientific publication based on Cook's first voyage, the first publication of observations made on the Endeavour, and thus the first major work of astronomy to study the east coast of New Holland and New Zealand, collating the observations made by Cook, Clerke and Green on the Endeavour. Although Beddie lists four institutional copies the book has virtually never been seen on the market. Today there are copies at the State Libraries of New South Wales, Queensland and Western Australia as well as copies in the National Library and the Victorian Parliamentary Library. The book was prepared by the veteran of Cook's second voyage, William Wales, while he was serving as master of the Royal Mathematical School in Christ's Hospital. Wales comments that the original papers were given to him as early as April 1778, but 'owing to the imperfect state that [first voyage astronomer] Mr. Green's papers were left in at his death... I laid the work aside.' Wales is more complimentary about the work of Harrison, the purser for Samuel Wallis on the Dolphin, the more so, he writes, because his work was completed without 'the advantage of a Nautical Almanac.' Wales had not only assisted Astronomer Royal Nevil Maskelyne in the publication of the famous almanacs, but had earlier contributed to the two volumes of astronomical observations from Cook's second and third voyages. Both of the large charts are newly engraved by the experienced artist James Basire with the addition of important technical information. Basire is best known for his engraved portrait of Captain Cook. The first, 'A Chart of the Eastern Coast of New Holland, Discovered and Explored in 1770, By Captain James Cook, Commander of His Majesty's Bark, Endeavour', shows the entire coastline from Point Hicks in the south to the very tip of Cape York, enhanced with the detailed track of the Endeavour. The reef on which they grounded is annotated 'On This ledge the Ship lay 23 hours', and many of their observations are also marked. The second, 'A Chart of New Zealand, explored by Captain James Cook in 1769 and 1770 in His Majesty's Bark the Endeavour', shows both islands with the track of the Endeavour. The work includes substantial contributions. Four separate sections print the variations of the compass observed by Cook and his three immediate predecessors, Byron on the Dolphin; Wallis on the same vessel; Carteret on the Swallow; and by Cook on the Endeavour. There is, besides, a section on astronomical observations made by Harrison, the purser for Samuel Wallis; and another on those made by Green, Cook and Clerke on the Endeavour. There are also two important sections of "Deductions from the Observations" of Wallis and Cook, as well as the "Meteorological Observations" of the Transit of Venus made by Green on Tahiti in 1769. Bagnall, 5842; Beaglehole, I, p. cclxiv; Beddie, 719; Holmes, 71; O'Reilly-Reitman, 3998; Sabin, 101029.

A comparative statement of the two bills, for the better government of the British possessions in India, brought into Parliament by Mr Fox and Mr Pitt second edition

London: J. Debrett 4to (28.5 cm, 11.25"). 39, [1 (blank)] pp.. 1788 Second edition. Sheridan entered Parliament in 1780, crowning his previous career as a successful playwright and theatre manager with a long and distinguished record of public service. He originally read the main portion of this statement before the House of Commons as part of the debate, after noticing that the gentlemen discussing the two bills in question appeared not to have paid "any very minute degree of attention" (p. 6) to the details of either one. The texts of both bills are present here, along with Sheridan's analysis of how each would address "the question of right between the public and the [East India] Company" (p. 39). Recent marbled paper–covered boards, front cover with gilt-stamped leather title label and spine with gilt-stamped leather author label. Half-title and several other pages stamped by a now-defunct institution. Pages with edges untrimmed and a few small spots of staining; mostly, clean.

(2 ll.), xxiii, (1), 132, 192, 170 pp., (1 l.). 4°, contemporary mottled calf (scuffed, minor wear to spine, label missing). Wormhole touching a few letters, otherwise crisp and clean. Overall in very good condition. ---- FIRST EDITION of the first bibliography of historical medicine in Portuguese. The preliminary leaves evaluate the status of medical history and bibliography. Part 1 describes the history of medicine to 1600; part 2, its history from 1600 to 1731; the third, its history from 1731 to 1783. Each is a narrative with copious annotations, including bibliographical citations. The work was based on Portal's @Histoire de l'anatomie et de la chirurgie, Paris 1770-1773, but has substantial additions on Portuguese medicine and on the years 1773-1783. A contemporary review (quoted extensively in Innocêncio) lamented its lack of an index but nevertheless described it as "digno de louvor," and Ferreira de Mira's history of Portuguese medicine cites it numerous times, with respect for the author's evaluations. The author was an army surgeon and a public-health official.---- Innocêncio VI, 101: noting that he had only seen 2 or 3 copies.

Paris, Lottin & Lottin. 1788. 4to., with a woodcut impression of the arms of the French East India Company on title-page, 103 + (1) + 24pp., with a large folding table, well bound fairly recently in marbled boards with morocco spine label lettered in gilt, uncut. A fine, large, copy. First edition: rare. Goldsmiths 13586. James Ford Bell H.38. Not in Kress, Einaudi, Mattioli, or N.E-H.A. (Amsterdam). OCLC locates 7 copies worldwide. A substantial paper relating to the termination of the old Compagnie des Indes and the creation of the new one. The author pleads the case for the continuation of the old company: 'La Compagnie existe & son existence est la propriété de plusieurs milliers d'hommes. (p.4). The life of the Compagne française des Indes orientales was a short one after Lord Clive's largely successful anti-French campaigns in India. Louis XVI decided to nationalise the Company's assets and, between 1769 and about 1790 most of these assets were taken over by the French government at often a derisory low value. The Company was finally wound up in 1795.

Signed as United States Secretary of Foreign Affairs, the precursor to United States Secretary of State, and just months before being appointed the first United States Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, with an additional "John Jay" signature in the text. This is a financial document whereby the Secretary disposes of some farm business in preparation of his new government responsibilities, in full: "On this day we settled all accounts between us prior to the 1st day of May cash (except the taxes of 1786 & 1787, and except the account of Boards bought of Js. Smith, and of Rails from Randall & some Timber from Runnels) & there was found due on this settlement from Major Lyons to John Jay seventy pounds - twelve shillings - and four pence (including the balance due the last year). Besides: his share of David Dans note fore seven pounds and Robert Elliot's note for twenty pounds, both of which are yet unpaid." The settlement is counter-signed by Samuel Lyons -- a Revolutionary War Major and business partner of John Jay. Berlin: George Jacques Decker, 1782.

First edition, extremely rare separately-paginated offprint, of this work in which Lagrange introduced the potential function of a system of gravitationally-interacting bodies and gave the first proof of his general laws of motion, now called the 'Lagrange equations,' which were to play a central role in his masterpiece, <i>Mécanique Analitique</i> (1788). "Lagrange's work on the libration of the Moon was significant mainly because of the mathematical tools he used to study it, rather than for the results themselves. In his treatment of this particular problem from celestial mechanics, he derived general equations that have served as the basis for the study of dynamical systems ever since" (Linton, p. 320). The present work was published in <i>Nouveaux memoires de l'Académie des sciences et belles-lettres</i> (Berlin), 11 (1782), pp. 203-309. OCLC lists copies of this offprint at Berlin and Utrecht only (no copies in US).<br/><br/> "Lagrange's interest in celestial mechanics was stimulated by the Paris Academy prize contest of 1764, for which it was asked, '<i>whether it can be explained by any physical reason why the Moon always presents the same face to us; and how, by observations and by theory, it can be determined whether the axis of this planet is subject to some proper movement similar to that which the axis of the earth is known to perform, producing precession and nutation</i>.' Lagrange successfully resolved the first issue and won the prize" (Linton, p. 319). Lagrange's paper was published in 1777 as 'Recherches sur la libration de la lune, dans lesquelles on tâche de résoudre la Question proposée par l'Académie Royale des Sciences pour le Prix de l'année 1764,' <i>Recueil des pieces qui ont remporté les prix de l'Académie Royale des Sciences 9, pièces de</i> 1764, '65, '66, '70, '72, pp. 1-50. <br/><br/> "The physical cause of the equality between the length of a lunar day and a lunar month had been given by Newton, who argued, by analogy with the tides on the Earth, that the Moon would not be spherical but a spheroid, the greatest diameter of which, if produced, would pass through the centre of the Earth. The Moon could be in equilibrium only in this position, and any small displacement would result in slow oscillations about this configuration. Despite the efforts of people such as D'Alembert, no one had developed a theory capable of analysing such motions. What Lagrange accomplished was the development of a method by which the period of these so-called librations could be determined ...<br/><br/> "His approach was founded on a combination of Maupertuis' principle of rest and d'Alembert's principle of virtual velocities, and served as a cornerstone for all Lagrange's subsequent work on dynamics. As well as the details of the celestial mechanics, Lagrange's essay contains technical explanations of the procedures he was using, and in particular provided an outline of the derivation of what we now refer to as 'Lagrange's equations of motion.' <br/><br/> "Lagrange derived the differential equations of motion for the non-spherical Moon from his new principle, and went on to show that the physical libration of the Moon should have a period of 119 months. He could not, however, explain another phenomenon - concerning the orientation of the axis of rotation of the Moon - discovered by G. D. Cassini and subsequently confirmed by Mayer. Cassini observed that the mean plane of the equator of the Moon made a constant angle with the ecliptic plane, that angle being 2° 30'. Furthermore, the line of intersection of these two planes is also the line of nodes of the orbit of the Moon, with the ascending node of the orbit corresponding to the descending node of the equator. Lagrange could find no reason from his analysis why this should be so. <br/><br/> "Lagrange gave a more complete solution in 1780 [in the offered paper], by which time he had improved and generalized his analytic methods considerably, and presented a formal derivation of his fundamental dynamical equations ... Lagrange introduced what we would now call a 'potential function.' Defining <i>L = T - V</i>, where <i>T</i> is the kinetic energy and <i>V</i> is the potential, Lagrange expressed the equations of motion of any system of bodies in the form now known as Lagrange's equations ...<br/><br/> "By an expeditious choice of variables, Lagrange derived differential equations that enabled him to show that the angular distance of the Moon from the mean ascending node of its orbit had to be the same as the mean angular distance of the prime meridian of the Moon from the node of the lunar equator. This is precisely what Cassini had observed, and thus once more, what had presented itself as an apparently arbitrary fact turned out to be a consequence of universal gravitation" (Linton, pp. 320-1). <br/><br/> C. M. Linton, <i>From Eudoxus to Einstein: A History of Mathematical Astronomy</i>, 2007.. 4to (256 x 210 mm), pp. [1-3] 4-109, [3:blank], contemporary calf, richly gilt spine, some wear and 1-2 cm loss of leather to botton and top parts of spine, hinges a little worn but still strong, three book plates to front paste down, internally fine and fresh. A very nice and entirely unrestored copy. Highly rare

        Ruine einer antiken römischen Villa.

. Bleistift, auf cremefarbenem Pauspapier. 15,7:31,6 cm. S. 74.. Hier begegnete ihm J.A. Götzloff (1799-1866), A.L. Richter (1803-1884), J.H. Schilbach (1798-1851) u. a.
