Londres [Paris?: no publisher]. 1787. First. First edition. Octavo. xxiv, xlviii, 344pp. Text in French. Two or three minor pencil notations and underlining in text. Contemporary three-quarter leather dark brown calf and marbled boards. Spine and corners professionally restored; hinges strengthened with Japanese paper. An ex-library copy, with blind-stamp on title page and some old markings on dedication page; some small scattered library stamps at corners of text professionally removed. Inscribed by Thomas Jefferson to Sir John Sinclair on front free endpaper: "Th. Jefferson to Sr. John Sinclair." Brissot de Warville, a Girondist during the French Revolution, came to an untimely end by the guillotine in 1793. This important economic work by Claviere and Brissot de Warville advocated mutually beneficial commerce between France and the fledgling United States. Brissot sent a copy of the proof sheets to Jefferson a year before the book was published, and Jefferson made a few comments and corrections to the text. In a letter to him in 1786, Jefferson says "I have read with very great satisfaction the sheets of your work on the commerce of France & the United States which you were so good as to put into my hands.... were I to select any particular passages as giving me particular satisfaction, it would be those wherein you prove to the United States that they will be more virtuous, more free, & more happy, employed in agriculture, than as carriers or manufacturers. It is a truth, and a precious one for them, if they could be persuaded of it."A copy of the published work was part of Jefferson's library [Sowerby #3609], and signs of his influence on the text are scattered throughout [Jefferson is specifically referred to in a footnote on p. 321 of this text.] Jefferson apparently had not had a chance to read the finished work, as his duties as Minister to France kept him very busy. He did, however, send a copy of the book to his friend Sinclair and James Madison in 1787. In a letter from Paris dated July 2, 1787, Jefferson writes: "I avail myself of the earliest moment possible after my return to thank you for the sketch of your last year's journey which has come duly to hand. I send you through the medium of Count Sarsfeild a late publication on the connections between France and the United States which is said to be well written. I have not yet read it, and indeed I wonder how any body finds time to read any thing in Europe." [The editors of the Princeton edition of Jefferson's letters have identified this "late publication" as Claviere & Brissot de Warville's De la France et des Etats-Unis. See The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, (Princeton: 1955), volume 11, p.532.].Sir John Sinclair and Jefferson were in constant correspondence over the years, often exchanging publications, seeds, and newly developed farm implements. Sinclair (1754-1835) was a Scottish agriculturalist, and first President of the Board of Agriculture in London. Jefferson himself became a Foreign Honorary Member of the London Board of Agriculture while Sinclair was President. [Sowerby #726 & 767]. In their correspondence on agriculture, Jefferson reiterated the sentiments he had expressed to Brissot: "I have to acknowledge the receipt of your two favors of June 21. & July 15, & of several parcels of the Agricultural reports. These now form a great mass of information on a subject of all in the world the most interesting to man; for none but the husbandman makes any thing for him to eat, & he who can double his food, as your exertions bid fair to do, deserves to rank among his benefactors, next to the creator." [Letter dated March 23, 1798.] According to ESTC T 109594: "The imprint is false; possibly printed in Paris." Howes C464; Kress B1169; Sabin 13516. Provenance on request. .

        Cabinet of Genius. II Vols.

1787. CABINET OF GENIUS]. The Cabinet of Genius Containing Frontispieces and Characters adapted to the Most Popular Poems, &c. with the Poems &c at large. Two volumes. Various paginations. With 45 and 50 engravings respectively. 4to., 205 x 180 mm, bound in contemporary calf, handsomely rebacked in light tan calf with dark brown morocco labels, raised bands, spine compartments gilt. London, printed for C. Taylor, 1787-[1790]. |~||~||~||~||~| First Edition of this compendium of poetic works, a complete copy bound from all the parts issued by Charles Taylor at his shop in Holborn, London. The work is of considerable interest to students of Women's History, as it is profusely illustrated with plates, descriptions, and personifications of "illustrious" women of the time. These volumes are illustrated with ninety-five fine stipple-engraved plates executed by Taylor and Ogborne mostly after designs by Samuel Shelley (1750-1808) and Robert Smirke (1752-1845). Shelley was a famous painter of miniatures, dividing the patronage of the day between Cosway and Engleheart. Smirke was "an excellent English painter of humorous and sentimental subjects" (Burke), although he did not exhibit at the Royal Academy until 1786. The present volumes contains some of his earliest published efforts. The attractive stipple-engraved plates are all printed in sepia, with remarkably successful results. Charles Taylor and John Ogborne both were students of Bartolozzi, the great English master-engraver; his influence on them is quite discernible here. The many popular authors represented herein include Pope, Gray, Thompson, Dr. Johnson, John Gay, Milton, Goldsmith, Stern, Dryden, Robert Burns and Shakespeare. Rebacked in beige calf, corners refurbished, recent endpapers. Internally a fine, complete copy. Note that over half of the copies listed by ESTC are defective, including both British Library copies, both Bodleian copies, and both Henry E. Huntington copies. ESTC: T090563.

The Case, Trevett Against Weeden: On Information and Complaint.

1787 - One of the Earliest Examples of Judicial Review in America, Jefferson Owned a Copy of this Account [Trial]. Varnum, James M. [1748-1789]. Weeden, John, Defendant. The Case, Trevett Against Weeden: On Information and Complaint, For Refusing Paper Bills in Payment for Butcher's Meat, In Market, At Par with Specie. Tried Before the Honourable Superior Court, In the County of Newport, September Term, 1786. Also, The Case of the Judges of Said Court, Before the Honourable General Assembly, At Providence, October Session, 1786, On Citation, For Dismissing Said Complaint. Wherein the Rights of the People to Trial by Jury, &c. Are Stated and Maintained, And the Legislative, Judiciary and Executive Powers of Government Examined and Defined. Providence: Printed by John Carter, 1787. iv, 60 pp. Quarto (7-3/4" x 6"). Stab-stitched pamphlet in plain wrappers. Moderate edgewear and staining. Light browning to text, internally clean. An appealing copy of an important item. * First edition. This landmark in the history of American judicial review arose from a dispute with a butcher. In 1786 Trevett attempted to purchase meat from Weeden with paper money issued by an act of the General Assembly of Rhode Island, which Weeden refused. Trevett lodged a complaint with Superior Court of Newport, but it ruled in favor of the defendant, who was defended by Varnum, stating that it was unconstitutional for the state to demand acceptance of its paper money. The judges were called before the state legislature, where they defended their actions. This event received a great deal of public attention and inspired Varnum's brief study, which examines the motivations of the legislature, the power of the judiciary to alter legislation and the rights of individual citizens. John Marshall noted Varnum's book in the debates leading to his decision in Marbury v. Madison. Also a general in the Rhode Island State Militia, Varnum was a Rhode Island lawyer who served in the Continental Congress from 1780 to 1782. He was appointed Judge of the Northwest Territory in 1787 and spent the rest of his life in Ohio. Ritz, American Judicial Proceedings Published Before 1801 157.         South Britain or England & Wales

London: Sayer, Robert, 1787. unbound. Map, in two sheets. Copper plate engraving with original outline hand color. Each image measures 28" x 45". This large-scale wall map depicts the entirety of England and Wales extending to parts of Ireland, Scotland, and France. Map has an incredibly fancy commodities cartouche including depictions of cannons, clocks, sheep, the military, representing everything that England was doing at the time. This map was made right around the time the concept of longitude was discovered. perhaps why the clock and time is represented in the cartouche. Based on the work of Marcus Armstrong, this two-part map has a particular focus on military and post roads. Hand-colored lines divide and subdivide shires, mountains are depicted pictorially, and bodies of water such as lochs and firths are all labeled. At the upper right is a large inset of the "The Islands of Shetland or Zetland." The upper left corner contains a decorative title cartouche, and the map's lower left contains a key of "Distances of the Principal Stages on the Great Roads Leading from Edinburgh." The map is in good condition with little edge wear. Minor foxing and offsetting throughout.<br><br>Robert Sayer (1725-1794) was an important English publisher of maps, portraits, and nautical engravings. Partnering with John Bennett around the 1760s, the two published the works of well-known cartographers such as Kitchen, Jefferys, Belling, d'Anville and others. This beautiful, large-scale map is an impressive example of his work.

Published in London and immediately reprinted in New York and Philadelphia, the Defence was a profound influence on the delegates to the Constitutional Convention of 1787 and the framers of several post-Revolutionary state constitutions. It also did much to familiarize Europeans with the novel political events taking place in America. Adams intended the Defence to be a one-volume work. It attracted a good deal of critical attention after its publication in 1787, which Adams addressed in two more volumes published in 1788. Since this book was published in two stages, complete sets are uncommon. They are rare in the trade, having appeared only three times at auction since 1955. OCLC locates 6 complete copies in North American law libraries (Harvard, Jenkins, New York Law Institute, Social Law, Yale, York). Mascagni was appointed professor of anatomy at the University of Siena at the age of 22; in 1784 he submitted to the Academie des Sciences in Paris his Prodrome d'un ouvrage sur le systeme des vaissaux limphatiques. This was followed by the present work, a magnificent production, which gained him lasting fame and paved the way for progress in anatomy, physiology and clinical medicine, since half of the lymphatic vessels now known were discovered by him. His extremely detailed discoveries of naked-eye anatomical distribution of the lymphatics could only be described through illustrations. For this purpose Mascagni hired Ciro Santi, a painter and engraver from Bologna who lived in Sienna until about 1780. Santi prepared 27 drawings and engraved 27 spectacular copperplates and 16 key plates. These depict vessels in some of the finest detail present in anatomical illustration before the advent of photography. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Amsterdam Amstelland.

Prijs: € 3.450,- (incl. lijst).

To the Right Honorable Francis Godolphin Marquis of Caermarthen, Baron Osborne &c. &c. This View of Hanover Square, from a Drawing in his Possession, Is with great respect inscribed by His Lordship's obedient & obliged Servants, Rob.t Pollard & Fra.s Jukes.

1787 - London: Robert Pollard & Francis Jukes, 1789. Aquatint with line etching. Sheet 440 x 570mm. A view of Hanover Square, looking south towards the St George's Church, with a mixture of pedestrians, riders and coaches braving the cobbblestones. Of particular interest is the 'high-flyer', a phæton carriage with the cab above the four horses pulling it. Behind railings the centre of the square is a simple lawn. Edward Dayes (1763-1804) was one of the leading topographical artists of the late eighteenth century. This was one of a series of four views of the great London squares, the others being Bloomsbury Square, Grosvenor Square and Queen Square. This aquatint was engraved and published by Robert Pollard and Francis Jukes. The original drawing mentioned in the title is now in the British Museum.

THE VISION OF COLUMBUS; A POEM IN NINE BOOKS

Hartford: Hudson & Goodwin, 1787. First Edition. Hardcover. Fore-edges of the covers a little chewed, not affecting the pages which have mild browning. Nice, Near Fine copy. Octavo (5-3/4" x 7-3/4") bound in contemporary sheep leather with a gilt-lettered red morocco spine label. BAL 865. Pages [263-264], which were blank, excised, as noted by BAL. Includes a highly flattering dedication to King Louis XVI of France who, along with George Washington, leads the list of subscribers. The dedication did not appear in the first English edition. Preceding his magnum opus, the COLUMBIAD (1807), by twenty years, this poem laid the groundwork for his more ambitious later effort which was dedicated to Robert Fulton and which was the most costly work published in America to that date. His revision, however, was lost on the general population of his young country which preferred this the earlier version.

Utrecht (d.i. Ulm ?) 1787 - (BORCKE, ADRIAN HEINRICH VON). Geheime Briefe über die Preußische Staatsverfassung seit der Thronbesteigung Friedrich Wilhelms des Zweyten. Utrecht (d.i. Ulm ?) 1787. 88 S. [Angebunden:] ANONYM. Diese oxydiert, kleine Wurmlöcher a.d. Rücken, etwas berieben. &#128; 700 1) Erste Ausgabe (Hayn/G. II,456 [hat &#132;Titel, 86 S.&#147;]; Holzm./Boh. VII,1944; Weller, Druckorte I,134). &#150; 2) Erste Ausgabe (Hayn/G. II,457; Weller, Druckorte S.137 [unklar]). Seit B.Reiches Dissertation Die politische Literatur unter Friedrich Wilhelm II (1891) gilt ADRIAN HEINRICH VON BORCKE (1733 &#150; 1793; preußischer Gesandter in Dresden, später in Stockholm. Neuerdings bezweifelt R.Markner (Imakoromazypziloniakus. Mirabeau und der Niedergang der Berliner Rosenkreuzerei. In: Sozietäten . Neue Forschungen zur Vergesellschaftung im Jahrhundert der Aufklärung. Hg.v. M.Meumann u. No.1510). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Monde Primitif, Analysé Et Comparé Avec Le Monde Moderne, Considéré Dans Son Génie Allegorique Et Dans Les Allégories Auxquelles Conduisit Ce Génie

Durand, Neveu, Paris 1787 - Complete in 9 volumes bound in full contemporary acid calf, various wear at edges, surface scrapes, a few hinges cracked but all held by cords - volume 9 front board a little loose. Scattered foxing, minor stains and tears, but very good overall and a nice and complete set with 45 plates, 2 maps, 4 frontispieces. Published 1781-1796, but most 1787.A treasure trove of influential, if largely nonsensical, occult musings. Court was the source of the original occult trappings of the Tarot which he considers in volume VIII. A remarkable moment in history when the enlightenment love of collecting human knowledge met the lingering belief in the outlandish. Scarce complete, volume IX is often lacking.         The Soliloquy

London: Published by W. Dickinson, Bond Street, 1787. Stipple with hand-colour. Printed on early wove paper. In excellent condition with the exceptioin of a small mended tear in the right margin. Small paper loss in lower left corner. Image size: 11 1/8 x 7 1/2 inches. A wonderful print of a young woman contemplating love by the celebrated painter William Ward. William Ward is remembered as one of the most accomplished engravers of his day. He produced some of the most beautiful prints of the period, and his delicate engravings epitomize the style and sentiment of the age. Ward was primarily a mezzotint engraver but he also worked in stipple, executing hauntingly delicate prints that capture the soul and character of their subject. He studied under John Raphael Smith and quickly became one of his most distinguished pupils, incorporating his master's delicate technique into his own distinctive style. Along with his brother James, William was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy and soon earned the privilege of becoming mezzotint engraver to the prince regent. This delicate image recalls the style of Ward's master John Raphael Smith, who made a name for himself with his subtly suggestive portraits of women. Like many similar images produced by Smith, Ward's ambiguous picture depicts an ornately dressed young woman in a park setting. She sits by herself contemplating love, an emotion that is elucidated by the text underneath that makes reference to her denial of unchaste desires.
