Sammandrag af Justitiae-Radets Herr Casten [!] Niebuhrs Resa i Levanten och Beskrifning om Arabien.

Stockholm, Kongl. Ordens-Tryckeriet, 1787. - 8vo. (24), 455, (23) pp. With 4 engr. plates. Contemp. half calf with gilt title label on spine. Extremely rare sole edition of this account of the Niebuhr expedition to Arabia in the 1760s. Produced as a cheaper alternative to the hefty 3-volume sets which appeared in German, Danish, French, and other languages, the present work was printed by the Royal press and gives a summary of the journey intended for a popular audience. Swedish interest in the expedition was elicited by the presence of the Swedish botanist and explorer Peter Forsskål in Niebuhr's caravan. After studying Arabic dialects, Forsskål was the first to scientifically describe many plants of the Arabian Peninsula, before dying in Yemen of malaria in 1763. - The plates, modeled after those of the German edition of 1772, depict a Turkish Pilgrim to Mecca; an Arab woman in a hijab, with an inset detail of a burkha; an Arab farm-girl from the 'Coffee Mountains' of southern Arabia; and an Arab nobleman of Yemen. - Binding rather rubbed; some chipping to spine; blank margin of first few leaves a little toned, otherwise a very good copy, clean and fresh. OCLC shows just 3 copies worldwide: the University of Texas, the Swedish National Library, and the Danish National Library. No copy seen at Anglo-American auction since 1999. OCLC 156793368. James Ford Bell 340. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Herrn M. Blanchard Seine 28te Luftreise zu Nürnberg am 12. Novemb.

1787 - Rare treatise on Santa Marta in Colombia, describing the native population, its mineralogy, and the Guajiros´ language. 1787. Madrid. Antonio de Sancha. In 8vo. 1 [blank] + 1 ff. + xxx + 280 pp. + folding map. Contemporary Spanish calf, spine flat with gilt tooling and red lettering pieces, also lettered in gilt, some minor rubbing and scratching, mainly to boards, over a good-looking original binding. Fine copy, wide margins; overall very clean and fresh, with the seldom-found map. First edition. A rare work, when found with the folding map of the Port of Santa Martha; it is an exhaustive description of the Colombian region, including details of the fauna, flora, and mineralogy (as gold and silver mines), riches, as well as information on the gastronomy and local produces (such as tobacco, coke, cacao, and others). A large portion of the work is dedicated to the native population, namely the Tayronas, Arnacos, Tupes, Chimilas, Motilones and Guagiros, their customs, tradition, and way of living in general –constituting a rather scarcely seen report on the lives of Colombian Indians. The third part deals almost exclusively with the hydrographic reality of Santa Marta, its rivers, and ports. Evidently interested in the native population, Julian dedicates a portion of the work to the study of the language of the Guajiros, saying “that it is clear, short and sonorous, and it appears to him to be the best American-Indian language. He states that he had a dictionary of this tongue in his possession, given him by a cleric, a brother of the Cacique Don Cacilio” (Maggs). Sabin, 36882. Medina, BHA, 5225. Palau, 126001. Christine Blondel, ‘Haüy et l'électricité ’, R.H.S., 1997, vol. 50, n°50-3, p. 265-282). (Honeymann, n°1620. Wheeler Gift, n°541). Traces de restauration à la reliure. Edition originale.

Ottimo esemplare marginoso. Rara. Valerio - Spagnolo, Sicilia 1477 - 1861, La collezione Spagnolo-Patermo in quattro secoli di cartografia, n° 265; Dufour-La Gumina, Imago Siciliae, pag. 231.

Some foxing; bindings a little worn; paper repair to EE8 in volume two, the original tear which was apparently casued by a printer's error; very good copy.. 2 vols, 8vo, later quarter vellum, marbled paper boards, gilt lettering. Half-titles present. Two folding maps and three folding plates. The fascinating travel narrative of Constantin François Chasseboeuf, Comte de Volney (1757-1820), French aristocrat, philosopher, abolitionist, historian and politician, who set out for Egypt and Syria in 1782 and remained there for almost five years. His Voyage en Égypt et en Syrie was first published in Paris in 1787 and quickly translated into English. "One of the most exact and valuable works of the kind ever published. . . . Volney was a member of the States General and later the Constituent Assembly. He had a varied career during the Revolution, once narrowly escaping the guillotine" - Cox. Volney later became a friend of Thomas Jefferson, whom he visited at Monticello. Jefferson admired Volney's writings and at one time had planned to translate his Ruins of Empires into English, but presidential politics intervened.

Cary's New and Correct English Atlas: Being a New Set of County Maps from Actual Surveys

John Cary, London 1787 - Advertisement Leaf; Title page; Dedication Leaf; Contents [47 Double-page Maps] (Directions) pp 17 [1] Cary's 1787 English Atlas in a most desirable contemporary wallet-style binding intended for use by Stage Coach Drivers. The binding is soft sheep over thick card covers with rubbing to the hinges but a very good example of this style of binding. The first blank has the inscription of the sculptor Henry Westmacott recording the book as a gift from his sculptor father, Richard: 'Henry Westmacott A Gift of his Father's in 1801.' Westmacott's initials also appear on the unprinted recto of the Dedication Leaf. After the preliminaries there follow the 47 double page maps, outlined in colour and bound sideways onto stubs. The volume concludes with the seventeen pages of Directions. As befits a volume intended for practical use this is the version that does not have the county summaries or list of subscribers. An engraver himself, Cary is highly regarded for the quality of the workmanship and the precision of his cartography. An excellent copy.         Poems on Various Occasions

London: Printed at the Logographic Press, and sold by Messrs. Wilkie, [1787], 1787. First edition. Jackson, Romantic Poetry by Women, Sanders 1; ESTC records two copies (Yale and Huntington), to which OCLC and COPAC add BL. Frontis lightly foxed; fine copy.. 12mo, period-style tan paper spine and marbled boards by Philip Dusel, untrimmed. Frontis. Eight-page list of subscribers. The first book by Charlotte Sanders, who went on to write children's fiction, notably The Little Family, published in 1797, and Edmund, a Tale for Children, in 1802, but little else about her appears to be known. This substantial collection of 70 poems is quite polished. Most are domestic in theme, but several show a passionate awareness of poverty and social injustice. There are also four poems written to or about author and philanthropist Jonas Hanway (1712-1786), apparently a family friend. And there is a poem on at least one other notable subject: "On Reading an Advertisement of a New Invented Method to Walk in the Air": "No more Balloons then, th' air-brain'd traveller's praise, / But new form'd projects, admiration raise, / Childhood hath playthings, hath not manhood too? . . ."
