"The labours of De Saussure among the Alps mark an epoch, not only in the investigations of the history of the globe, but in the relations of civilized mankind to the mountains which diversify the surface of the land (...) [Saussure] it was who first taught the infinite charm and variety of mountain-scenery, the endless multiplicity of natural phenomena there to be seen, and the enthusiams which the mountain-world will awaken in the heart of every climber" (Geikie, The Founders of Geology, p. 181 et suiv.)

- Edizione originale. Legatura in piena pelle di pecora marrone screziato. Torna liscio decorato con 4 ferri nelle Urna elettorale, reti e rulli. inquadratura triple net sui piatti. parte del titolo in marocchino rosso. Molto bella copia.

first edition.Bound in full brown sheepskin contemporary. Back with nerves decorated. red calf as an exhibit. corners bumped. Scuffs on the borders and on the second flat. Small pits and traces of waterstains in the margins. misfolded boards in fine. A hole in the upper joint in the tail. The method is a manifesto for a revolution in the world of chemistry, and the birth of modern chemistry, a chemistry that resolutely turns his back to the past by becoming a scientist. This is Lavoisier, learned the most influential in the Academy of Sciences, which gathers around its theory and to support a crucially, the largest French chemists Fourcroy, Bertholet, Adet, Hassenfratz, and Guyton Morveau , that the already constituted group welcomes in Paris in February 1787. the latter joined the with advanced chemical nomenclature, which will be revisited by Lavoisier, which requires Morveau abandon its phlogiston theory (the principle of a fuel element in the air) which dates from the seventeenth since discovered the role of oxygen in the air. This is the price that is entrusted with the presentation of the new nomenclature. It is in the meeting on 2 May 1787 to the Academy of Sciences that will be imposed for the first time the terms oxygen, hydrogen, and carbon. Adet Hassenfratz and are responsible for the proposed symbols for "new characters to use in Chemistry" which will not be very successful but promised a great future. The entire project is placed under the authority and will of Lavoisier, and the decision Morveau is the project is a political decision, which should enable better reception among foreign scholars. No one deceive them because it is Lavoisier who will be attacked by Western science.Book very important sign that the birth of scientific chemistry.         THE CASE, TREVETT AGAINST WEEDEN: ON INFORMATION AND COMPLAINT, FOR REFUSING PAPER BILLS IN PAYMENT FOR BUTCHER'S MEAT, IN MARKET, AT PAR WITH SPECIE. TRIED BEFORE THE HONOURABLE SUPERIOR COURT, IN THE COUNTY OF NEWPORT, SEPTEMBER TERM, 1786...

Providence: John Carter, 1787. iv,60pp. Quarto. Antique-style calf, gilt leather label. Minor foxing and toning. Very good plus. A landmark in the establishment of the doctrine of judicial review, written by the presiding justice, here in the first edition. A clear, concise argument for the judiciary's right to reject legislation that violated the provisions of the new Constitution, and for the power of the judiciary in the realm of political authority. The plaintiff offered paper money, issued by an act of the General Assembly of Rhode Island, for the purchase of meat from the defendant, a butcher. The money was refused and the butcher lodged a complaint. The court ruled in favor of the defendant. The present case is considered the most important of the number of colonial cases regarding judicial review, due to its publication as a separate work and the high degree of advertisement and publicity it received at the time of the Convention. Varnum's influence on John Marshall's statement in Marbury vs. Madison, seventeen years later, is apparent. Madison noted it in the debates, and Warren supported the ruling. Varnum later became the justice for the new Northwest Territory and participated in drafting its laws. ALDEN 1105. EVANS 20825. SABIN 98638. KRESS B1355. JCB (3)I:3167.

Lippert.

Wien, Kraussischen Buchhandlung, 1787. Contemp. hcalf. Richly gilt spine. Titlelabel with gilt lettering. Very light wear to top of spine and to lower compartment. Stamps on verso of title-page. 207 pp. A few brownspots at end, otherwise clean and fine. Scarce first German edition of a milestone in mineralogical chemistry, translated from the Latin work of 1782 (Sciagraphia regni mineralis) and introducing a new classification and nomenclature following Linnaeus."From 1775 he began to coin names related to chemical composition, and he attempted a general reform in Sciagraphia regni mineralis (1782). Guyton de Morveau's proposals for a systematic nomenclature were also published in 1782, and their influence can be seen in Bergman's final system, presented in Meditationes de systemate fossilium naturali (1784). Guyton wrote in French, but Bergman preferred Latin, which could be translated into all modern languages. Following Linnaeus, Bergman divided inorganic substances into classes, general and species; and, as Linnaeus had done for plants and animals, he defined each class and genus by one word and each species by two. There were four classes: salts (including acids and alkalies as well as neutral salts), earths, metals, and phlogistic materials. In the important and numerous class of salts, each acid or alkali constituted a genus, and a neutral salt was a species belonging to the genus of its acid." (DSB).

[1 & 2] Dec. 1, 1787; [3] July 28, 1789; [4] July 1, 1789., London - Dayes' Squares A set of four engravings with aquatint. Grosvenor Square A quartet of musicians play a barrel organ, a lute, a triangle, and a tambourine, watched by a lady in a passing carriage. Another carriage is parked at the left outside Grosvenor House. A young man reads a billet deux while walking a pair of dogs and carrying a basket of flowers.Grosvenor Square was one of the consistently most fashionable areas of London throughout the eighteenth century, forming the centre piece of the 100 acre Grosvenor estate. It was built between 1725 and 1731 and, with the exception of Lincoln's Inn, is the largest square in London. The houses were large and the inhabitants amongst the most important people in the land with a predominance of aristocracy that lasted well into the twentieth century. Only two of the original houses survive and much of what can be seen today results from the large scale remodelling of the 1920s onwards. At the time of publication the American ambassador had already taken up residence in the square: John Adams, the first U.S. ambassador and second president, lived at No. 9 between 1786 and 1797.Hanover SquareA view of Hanover Square, looking south towards the St George's Church, with a mixture of pedestrians, riders and coaches braving the cobbblestones. Of particular interest is the 'high-flyer', a phæton carriage with the cab above the four horses pulling it. Behind railings the centre of the square is a simple lawn. Bloomsbury SquareView across the square towards Bedford House, with railed garden in the centre, figures and carriages in the street in the foreground, and a milkmaid driving two cows. The square was built by James Burton and developed by 4th Earl of Southampton in the late seventeenth century, and was initially known as Southampton Square. It was one of the earliest London squares. The Earl's own house, then known as Southampton House and later as Bedford House after the square, and the rest of the Bloomsbury Estate passed by marriage from the Earls of Southampton to the Dukes of Bedford, occupied the whole of the north side of the square, where Bedford Place is now located. On April 9, 1694, Bloomsbury Square was the setting for an infamous duel. The then 23-year-old Scottish economist and financier John Law fought Edward 'Beau' Wilson, killing him with a single pass and thrust of his sword. Law would be convicted of murder and sentenced to death, but would escape his condemned cell and go on to become the founder of the Mississippi Company and the de facto prime minister of France.Queen Square The church of St George the Martyr is in the left foreground. Also visible are the first few houses beyond the corner of Cosmo Place now containing the Queen's Larder. Queen Square was originally constructed between 1716 and 1725. It was formed from the garden of the house of Sir John Cutler baronet (1608-1693), whose last surviving child, Lady Radnor, died in 1697 leaving no issue. It was left open to the north for the landscape formed by the hills of Hampstead and Highgate.Edward Dayes (1763-1804) was a British painter and draughtsman to the Duke of York. Born at Newcastle-on-Tyne, Robert Pollard (1755-1838) was articled to a watch-smith there, and then became a pupil of Richard Wilson. For a time he practised as a landscape and marine painter, but in 1781 he moved to London, worked as an engraver for the printseller John Harris, and established himself in a studio in Spa Fields, London. In 1788 Pollard was elected a fellow, and in the following year a director, of the Incorporated Society of Artists, which closed down in 1791. He was in business for many years in Islington. In 1810 he sold up, but then in Holloway Place ran a printselling business, for which his son James supplied many of the designs. In October 1836, as the last surviving member, Pollard gave the charter, books, and papers of the Incorporated Society to the Royal Academy. They had been passed to him in 1808 by Charles Taylor. Poll

Should have wrote you repeatedly the last Season, if I had known of my Safe or certain Conveyance. Before you leave this State, if you would make Some management, & give me Information, where, & what route will be safe or most proper to direct my letters, address'd to you, the new full Correspondence may be successfully continued, & be assured it will be very pleasing to this State, & perhaps beneficial; & very acceptable to me."Samuel Huntington (1731-1796) Born to a large Connecticut farming family, Huntington left home at 22, taught himself enough law to pass the bar, and at 34, was appointed King's attorney for the colony of Connecticut. He resigned to join the Revolutionary Cause, and in 1775, represented Connecticut as a delegate to the Continental Congress. Huntington signed of the Declaration of Independence, and in 1779, was elected 6th president of the Continental Congress.

Fine copy of a scarce book. Contemporary signature of John Darby on title. Modern ownership signature on free front paste-down of the historian of British agriculture G.D. Fussell, "March 1941." ? Fussell II, pp. 131-32-"His book may be taken to reflect the current ideas about farming in his locality." Roscoe A634(1). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
