        Sjö-tactique jemte dag-signaler för en örlogs-flotta.

Sthlm, Kongl. tryckeriet, 1787. Folio. (4),204 s. & 1 utvikbar tryckt tabell. Några understrykningar i rött bläck.

Zurich: bey Drell, Gessner, FŸssli und Comp., 1787 First edition. Contemporary half calf, spine gilt. . Octavo. Minor rubbing. A fine copy. Very scarce. The first full-fledged German study of Shakespeare. Eschenburg was a prominent critic and literary historian who is particularly remembered for his efforts to familiarize his countrymen with English literature. The present very substantial work has long chapters on Shakespeare's life, his contemporaries, the theaters and actors of the period, etc., as well as analysis of individual plays, and the sonnets and other poems.

Unkenneling the Fox-Hounds. L'acher la Meute

London: Published by Robt. Sayer, 53 Fleet Street, May 22, 1787. Mezzotint. Printed on laid paper. In excellent condition with the exception of two mended tears in the upper margin. Tear across the bottom right corner. Image size: 9 3/8 x 13 3/4 inches. 9 3/4 x 13 3/4 inches. 11 3/4 x 19 1/8 inches. This is a lovely rich impression of this striking print which perfectly demonstrates Seymour's artistry and Burford's skill as an engraver. James Seymour is recognized as one of the earliest English sporting artists. He was the son of a wealthy goldsmith and diamond merchant who supplied the plate for racing trophies. His father was also an amateur artist and a member of the Virtuosi Club of St. Luke, a gentleman's club for artists and art lovers. The young Seymour had no formal art instruction but he learnt to draw by studying the pictures and prints in his father's collection. At an early age he was introduced to some of the leading artists of the day, but at the same time he was encouraged to develop a love of the track, which eventually lead to his financial ruin. Seymour was passionate about racing and in addition to drawing and painting them he is believed to have owned racehorses himself. With his prolific output and superior talents he quickly established himself as a successful sporting artist, counting among his patrons Sir William Jolliffe, and the 6th Duke of Sommerset. This wonderful print is part of a series of hunting scenes executed by Burford after Seymour and reissued by Sayer in 1787. As with many sporting prints published by Sayer, he has included a French title with the obvious intention of marketing this extremely attractive print to a European audience. James Seymour was one of the first true sporting artists in Britain; he was considered one of the most eminent horse painters of the age and this beautiful mezzotint by Burford is a testimony to his talent.         Zions högtid.

Första häftet. Sthlm, J. C. Holmberg, 1787. 8:o. (6),14,17-53,(3 blanka) s. Förseningen berodde bl.a. på Stockholms konsistoriums tveksamhet.

        The Soliloquy

London: Published by W. Dickinson, Bond Street, Oct. 1, 1787. Stipple with hand-colour. Printed on early wove paper. In excellent condition with the exceptioin of a small mended tear in the right margin. Small paper loss in lower left corner. Image size: 11 1/8 x 7 1/2 inches. 12 9/16 x 8 1/4 inches. 16 11/16 x 11 7/8 inches. A wonderful print of a young woman contemplating love by the celebrated painter William Ward. William Ward is remembered as one of the most accomplished engravers of his day. He produced some of the most beautiful prints of the period, and his delicate engravings epitomize the style and sentiment of the age. Ward was primarily a mezzotint engraver but he also worked in stipple, executing hauntingly delicate prints that capture the soul and character of their subject. He studied under John Raphael Smith and quickly became one of his most distinguished pupils, incorporating his master's delicate technique into his own distinctive style. Along with his brother James, William was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy and soon earned the privilege of becoming mezzotint engraver to the prince regent. This delicate image recalls the style of Ward's master John Raphael Smith, who made a name for himself with his subtly suggestive portraits of women. Like many similar images produced by Smith, Ward's ambiguous picture depicts an ornately dressed young woman in a park setting. She sits by herself contemplating love, an emotion that is elucidated by the text underneath that makes reference to her denial of unchaste desires.

Orpheus und Euridice eine Oper... [Subtitle]: Clavierauszug der Partitur... herausgegeben von C.F. Cramer

1787. Oblong folio. Early speckled tan paper boards. [i] (title), ii (blank), iii-iv (subscription list), v-x (foreword), xi-xviii (libretto), 112 pp. typeset music. With text in Danish and German. From the collection of the composer's grandson, the composer Karl Ernst Naumann (1832-1910), with his faint signature to title. Binding worn, rubbed and bumped; slightly lacking at spine. Some foxing and browning throughout. A very good copy overall. . First Edition. BUC p. 725. RISM N189. A Singspiel in three acts to a libretto by Charlotte Dorothea Biehl after Ranieri de' Calzabigi, Orpheus und Euridice was first performed in Copenhagen at the Royal Opera on January 31, 1786 to a libretto by C.D. Biehl after R. Calzabigi. "In 1785–6 [Naumann] was guest opera composer and conductor in Copenhagen, where he also reformed the Hofkapelle and improved the organization of the court opera. For Copenhagen he composed the tuneful and charming Danish opera Orpheus og Eurydike (1786)..." "Orpheus was intended to test Naumann’s abilities before King Christian VII offered him an official appointment at the Danish court. The music was praised for its colourful harmonies and sensitive orchestration; Naumann uses Gluckian accompanied recitative throughout, while the choruses and arias range from expressive through-composed scenes to short, perfunctory lied forms. The orchestra consisted of 40 players at the première and included trombones, for which the theatre had to be enlarged. Orpheus remained on the stage in Copenhagen until December 1791, and, in addition to a vocal score in German translation (Hamburg, 1787), excerpts appeared in the catalogues of Dresden publishers until 1800..." "...He was the most important personality in the music history of Dresden between Hasse and Weber, as well as one of the most esteemed musicians in Europe in the late 18th century and one of the last German composers to study in Italy." Dieter Härtwig and Laurie H. Ongley in Grove online

Original Letters, Written During the Reigns of Henry VI Edward IV and Richard III By Various Persons of Rank or Consequence... Five Volumes

London: GGJ and J Robinson.. 4to Francis Blomefield, author of 'An Essay towards a Topographical History of Norfolk...' 'when staying with his brother-in-law, rector of Oxnead, he caught a fever, and during convalescence was given the run of the evidence room of the Earl of Yarmouth, head of the Paston family...where he shut himself up for a fortnight, ...(and)... " sifted between thirty and forty chests of antique curiosities and eveidencies" and unearthed the Paston Letters. (Christopher Hussey) These came into the hands of Sir John Fenn, who, encouraged by Horace Walpole, brought out a selection of the letters in two volumes (1787) and added two further volumes (1789) before he died in 1794. He also left the text of a fifth volume which was edited by his nephew, William Frere in 1823 (this last published by John Murray).         Sei Dialoghi Ottici Teorico-Pratici.Venice: Simone Occhi, 1787.

Rare first edition of this classic work on optics and optical instruments, illustrated with 4 finely engraved plates. Lorenzo Selva was the second in line of a family of opticians and instrument-makers working in Venice during the half of the seventeenth century. Both father and son were the most active opticians in Italy at the time and enjoyed an international reputation for the quality of their various optical instruments. Boscovich, who experimented with optics and published on the subject, considered Lorenzo - and not Dolland - as the inventor of the achromatic lens; and around the time the <i>Dialoghi</i> was published the great scientist was, in fact, collaborating with Lorenzo on perfecting lenses made of flintglass.<br/><br/> This dialogues contained in this work cover all aspects of optics and glass-making which were of concern to the opticians of the latter part of the eighteenth century: eyeglasses and their corrective function; the various kinds of telescopes - terrestial & celestial; post-Newtonian lenses, Herschel's telescope; various experiments with achromatic lenses by Boscovich and the author; microscopes; burning mirrors and other optical and mechanical devises including magic lanterns, camera obscuras, drawing instruments, prisms, and electrical machines, etc. <br/><br/> Perhaps the most interesting aspect of this work is the fact that the <i>Sei Dialoghi</i> was written not just by a theoretician but a maker in Venice (the center of glass manufacturing in Italy).<br/><br/> Duncan, Bibliography of Glass 12157; Boffito, Gli Strumenti della Scienza, p. 150; Riccardi, II, 436 - 'pregiato libro'.. Mackenzie is very critical of Tarleton&#39;s History, stating that facts were withheld or altered to fit the narrative. British Lieutenant Colonel Tarleton is best remembered for his skills as a cavalry leader in the South and for his vicious treatment of Continental soldiers during the Revolutionary War , Wherein Military Characters and Corps are vindicated from Injurious Aspersions, and several Important Transactions placed in their proper point of view. In a series of Letters to a Friend, By Roderick Mackenzie late Lieutenant in the 71st Regiment. To which is added, a Detail of the Siege of Ninety Six, and the Re-capture of the Island of New-Providence. The author defends Lord Cornwallis, and is very severe on Lieut. Col. Tarleton&#39;s "History," in which, he says, "Some facts have been withheld, and some mutilated, while others are raised to a pitch of importance, to which, if historical justice had been the author&#39;s object, they are by no means entitled."         Going to Cover. L'entree du Bois

London: Published by Robt. Sayer, 53 Fleet Street, May 22, 1787. Mezzotint. Printed on laid paper. In excellent condition. Image size: 9 1/4 x 13 3/4 inches. 9 3/4 x 13 3/4 inches. 11 7/8 x 19 1/4 inches. This is a stunning impression of a hunting scene after the celebrated sporting painter James Seymour. Adelaide

London: Published by T. Simpson, St. Pauls Church Yard, & No. 15 Villers Street, Strand, July 21, 1787. Colour printed stipple with hand-colour. Printed on wove paper. In excellent condition with the exception of being trimmed on the platemark. Image size: 12 9/16 x 12 3/8 inches. 15 3/4 x 13 5/8 inches. A handsome, round format print after Wheatley, depicting Adelaide from Marmontel's celebrated play "The Shepherdess of the Alps". This charming image illustrates a scene from Marmontel's romantic play "The Shepherdess of the Alps". The play, first published in 1766 as part of Marmontel's "Moral Tales", became the rage in both England and France and inspired many paintings and prints. The story is the tragic tale of Adelaide and her lover, the Count D'Orestan, two young French aristocrats, who, despite their familys' objections, run away together. Their happiness is short lived as the count dies suddenly. A grief- stricken Adelaide digs her lover's grave with her bare hands, renounces the world and her family, and becomes a shepherdess. She at last finds happiness after she reveals her true identity to a French nobleman, Fonrose. In this charming image, Wheatley depicts Adelaide in her rustic disguise, giving a lamb a treat. And so, although he has chosen to illustrate a literary subject, he has not strayed from his preference for solitary, country scenes. Webster, Francis Wheatley p. 61-63

Small quarto. [28], 344pp. 1 engraved portrait, 1 folding engraved map. (Abrasion on top edge of text block, probably to remove a 'marca de fuego'). Contemporary vellum, manuscript title on spine (lightly rubbed, ties lacking), in a half morocco and cloth folding box, spine gilt. A primary source for information on the history of early California First edition, second issue, with "Mar Pacifico" printed on the map (see Wagner). This is also the issue of the text with "car" instead of "pro" at the end of the index and with the phrase "a expensas de various bienhechores" preceding the imprint on the titlepage. An outstanding book on early California. Palou was a disciple of Father Junipero Serra (1713- 1784) for many years, and his work is still the principal source for the life of the venerable founder of the California missions. "The letters from Father Serra to Father Palou [provide] interesting details on the various Indian tribes and their manners and customs, together with descriptions of the country...This work has been called the most noted of all books relating to California" - Hill. "Both a splendid discourse on the California missions, their foundation and management, and an intimate and sympathetic biography of the little father-present. Better, by long odds, than the bulk of lives of holy men, written by holy men" (Libros Californianos). "[The map] is of interest here because it seems to be the first on which a boundary line was drawn between Lower and Upper California" (Wheat).
