[BOTANY BAY] A Short Review of the Political State of Great Britain at the Commencement

of the Year One ThousandSeven Hundred and Eighty-Seven ... The Sixth Edition, with additions.London : Printed for J. Debrett, opposite Burlington House, Piccadilly, 1787.Octavo, in modern marbled wrappers, pp iv, 86, internally clean and fresh, a very good copy. Ferguson, 27; Sabin, 80688 (4th edition). On pages 77-83, the anonymous author, now known to be the politician Sir Nathaniel Wraxall, supplies a scathing criticism of the concept of convict transportation ("the exile and removal of malefactors"), and describes the imminent "Expedition to Botany Bay" as "... so completely involv'd in the darkness and dignity of its own effense, that I am at a loss to know in what way it can be mention'd, or in what form it can be attack'd. It is beneath the disquisition of reason; and below the efforts of ridicule." Ferguson summarizes Wraxall's objections to the policy thus: "The destination of the convicts is too remote; they are departing at the wrong time of the year and will be exposed to the rigours of winter. No possible benefit can accrue to Great Britain from the execution of the project." The sixth edition of this pamphlet was the first to contain Wraxall's extended attack (it later appeared in the seventh edition), which is among the earliest printed references to transportation to Botany Bay.

        Bijltjesdag Amsterdam, 1787.

Prijs: ? 1.350,-.

Mi Josif Vtoriy, Bozhiyeyu Milostiyu [.].

[Vienna?], no date. - Folio. 8 pp. Very rare official document relating to the "secret alliance" between Joseph II and Catherine the Great, possibly forged in order 'to share with Russia the spoils of the Turkish Empire' (Coxe, Austria III, 519). - As an early attempt at tackling the 'Eastern Question' of the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire, Catherine believed that an alliance with Joseph would render her powerful enough to bring about her so-called 'Greek Project' - "the overthrow of the Ottoman Empire and the establishment of an Orthodox Christian successor state to Byzantium ruled by Catherine's grandson Constantine" (Mayer). While Russia had been plagued by confrontations with Turkey during the 18th century, the alliance guaranteed the reciprocal supply of troops in any Ottoman conflict - in 1787, asked for 12,000 men, Joseph famously mobilized some 200,000. - Joseph II had consistently attempted to maintain rather pacific relations with the Ottomans, in contrast to Catherine: "In late May 1787, as Joseph reluctantly accompanied Catherine II on a tour of the Crimea, he reported that she was dying 'to start up with the Turks again'", but the secret treaty of 1781 certainly contemplated the eventual partition of Ottoman territories. The assistance promised by Joseph in the present document turned out to be instrumental to Catherine's ambitions; indeed, as one scholar notes, "the collapse of the Ottoman war effort and the success of Habsburg armies in 1789 has yet to be adequately explained". - Light creasing and slight fault to lower margin of p .1, otherwise a very good copy. Mayer, "The Price for Austria's Security: Joseph II, the Russian Alliance, and the Ottoman War, 1787-1789", The International History Review Vol. 26, No. 2 (Jun., 2004), pp. 257-299

Het eiland Balie en de Balienezen.Amsterdam, G.J.A. Beijerinck, 1848. 8vo. With lithographed title-page and a folding lithographed map of the island Bali. Contemporary dark green half cloth.

Tiele, Bibl. 646; for the author: NNBW VIII, cols. 1014-1016. First and only edition of a description of the Indonesian island Bali and its people by Ulrich Gerard Lauts (1787-1865), a professor at the Royal Maritime Institute at Medemblik in the Netherlands. Without ever having set foot in the Dutch East Indies he wrote this book on Bali, which contains a general description of the island, its political system, the status of women, slavery, trade, customs (including the smoking of opium), religion, etc., and describes the relation with the Dutch from their first arrival in 1597 till 1848. The account was written when the Dutch were encountering difficulties with the virtually still independent local Balinese princes and rajahs. The three supplements contain details on the trade and shipping between Java and Bali in the years 1837-1846, a manifest for the Rajah of Beliling, a description of the state of the Dutch colonial army on Bali in 1846 and an official account of the expedition to Bali in 1848. Witha faint catalogue number and a library stamp. Browned throughout, with some spots, some wormholes throughout with loss of a few letters, two marginal tears along the folds of the map. Binding rubbed along the extremities. A fair copy.

THE CONSTITUTION, OR FRAME OF GOVERNMENT, FOR THE COMMONWEALTH OF MASSACHUSETTS, AGREED ON BY THE DELEGATES OF THE PEOPLE, IN CONVENTION, BEGUN AND HELD AT CAMBRIDGE ON THE FIRST OF SEPTEMBER, 1779, AND CONTINUED, BY ADJOURNMENTS, TO THE SECOND DAY OF MARCH, 1780, AFTERWARDS RATIFIED BY THE PEOPLE, AND TOOK PLACE ON THE 25TH DAY OF OCTOBER, 1780. THE FIRST WORCESTER EDITION.

Isaiah Thomas,, Worcester: 1787 - 12mo. 107, [1 blank] pp. Original calf [rubbed], rebacked. Very Good. Inscription in ink manuscript on second front free endpaper: "For Mr. William Hambley from his obliged and gratefully affectionate friend John Murray. Gloucester Octr. 10 1791." John Murray, the founder of the Universalist denomination in America, lived in Gloucester at this time. The Isaiah Thomas printing of the 1780 Constitution written by John Adams, a fine example of the American insistence on limited government, separation of governmental powers, and each branch of government controlled by checks and balances. Replacing the colonial charter, it was "drafted by the first body which could rightfully be called a constitutional convention" in Massachusetts [V Dictionary of American History 166]. "Of the original thirteen states only Massachusetts has avoided the necessity of wholesale revision of her constitution. Her 1780 document, while extensively amended, still serves her." [Id. at 167]. It served as the model for other States. Its 'Free and Equal Clause' was of profound importance: "by making the status of slave property uncertain, the Massachusetts Constitution of 1780 may have had more to do with the withering away of slavery in the state than did the decisions in the Walker-Jennison cases" [II Gephart 10385].Evans 20512.         Notes on the state of Virginia

printed for John Stockdale, London 1787 - (8 3/8 x 5 1/8 inches). 1 engraved folding map, hand-coloured in outline, 1 folding letterpress table. Contemporary calf gilt, the covers with neat restoration to the corners and edges, expertly rebacked to style with the flat spine divided into six compartments by double gilt fillets, red morocco label in the second compartment, modern morocco-backed slipcase Provenance: Francis Maseres, 1731-1824 (signature) The first English edition of Jefferson's famous work. This is the only book-length work by Jefferson to be published in his lifetime, and has been called "one of America's first permanent literary and intellectual landmarks." Jefferson's greatest work was largely written in 1781 and first published in Paris in 1785. Written in the form of answers to questions about Virginia, the book supplies a description of the geography, with an abundance of supporting material and unusual information. As J.M. Edelstein notes: "Jefferson wrote about things which interested him deeply and about which he knew a great deal; the Notes , therefore, throws a fascinating light on his tastes, curiosities, and political and social opinions." The handsome map which accompanies this edition (but is often lacking), based on the Fry and (Peter) Jefferson map, was not issued with the Paris editions. The story of the creation of this book and its publishing history is an interesting one and is described in full by Millicent Sowerby in her catalogue of Jefferson's library, where it occupies some thirty pages in small type. This copy bears the contemporary ownership signature of Francis Maseres on the front free endpaper. Maseres (1731-1824) was a longtime Baron of the Exchequer, and a noted jurist and mathematician. He was attorney-general of Quebec in the late 1760s and wrote frequently on issues concerning British colonies in North America, and on the rights of British subjects in the colonies. A fine association copy. Adams The Eye of Thomas Jefferson 57; Clark I:262; Howes J78; Sabin 35895; cf. Sowerby IV, pp.301-30; Vail 760. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

La perla de America, Provincia de Santa Marta, reconocida, observada y expuesta en discursos historicos

First edition. A rare work, when found with the folding map of the Port of Santa Martha; it is an exhaustive description of the Colombian region, including details of the fauna, flora, and mineralogy (as gold and silver mines), riches, as well as information on the gastronomy and local produces (such as tobacco, coke, cacao, and others). A large portion of the work is dedicated to the native population, namely the Tayronas, Arnacos, Tupes, Chimilas, Motilones and Guagiros, their customs, tradition, and way of living in general -constituting a rather scarcely seen report on the lives of Colombian Indians. The third part deals almost exclusively with the hydrographic reality of Santa Marta, its rivers, and ports. Evidently interested in the native population, Julian dedicates a portion of the work to the study of the language of the Guajiros, saying "that it is clear, short and sonorous, and it appears to him to be the best American-Indian language. He states that he had a dictionary of this tongue in his possession, given him by a cleric, a brother of the Cacique Don Cacilio" (Maggs). Sabin, 36882. Medina, BHA, 5225. Palau, 126001.

In 1652, Evelyn set about to create the garden at Sayes Court (the 200-acre Deptford estate his father-in-law held from the crown), a project that signaled the start of a serious interest in garden design. This led to his writing the Elysium Britannicum, an encyclopedic history of gardens and gardening practices that occupied him for most of his life. His pioneering works on tree cultivation (Silva, 1664) and on soils (A Philosophical Discourse of Earth, 1676; in later editions entitled Terra: a philosophical discourse) were both outgrowths of Elysium Britannicum. Although primarily intended to encourage tree planting after the devastation of the civil war, Silva was also a learned account of the growth and uses of native trees interpolated by an edited collection of material sent in by Fellows of the Royal Society from different parts of the country (indeed, Silva was the first book to carry the Society’s imprimatur). By its fourth edition it also contained ‘an Historical Account of the Sacredness and Use of Standing Groves.’ Silva's handsome reissue in 1776, with additional plates and with "learned and extensive" (Keynes) annotations, practical instructions, and references to the best eighteenth century authorities by Alexander Hunter, gave it renewed popularity.

London, 1787. Folio. (4, vi) 231, (4) pp. Second edition of a very important English contribution to naval shipbuilding. From the Scott Collection of the Institution of Naval Architects. Stalkartt, writing in the midst of the American Revolution (he refers to it in his dedication) proposes two major changes in English naval ship design — a midship bend forward of the center, and fair, instead of hollow, waterlines. “A neglected and important work”—McDonald 269. Roeding I:166, comparing its importance with Chapman. Scott, 380. Attractively rebound in antique style calf over marbled boards. Front inner hinge cracked but holding.         Wallis's New Dissected Map of World. Engraved from the latest authorities for the use of young students in Geography. Published by John Wallis Jun., 188 Strand. S. J. Wallis Sr., Warwick Sq.

The only known example of the earliest dissected puzzle map to show the three voyages of Captain Cook.  [Title from lid]. London : John Wallis Senior, 1787; reissued by John Wallis Junior, 1806-1808. Engraved map of the world with the imprint 'Published as the Act directs, Jany. 1st 1787 by Proprietor J. Wallis at his Map Warehouse, Ludgate Street, London', original hand colouring, pasted on wood and dissected into 69 pieces, housed in the original publisher's cedar box with sliding lid, printed title label, slip label 'World' to title label and also side panel, contemporary inscription inside the lid 'Henry Samuel Daller from his affectionate sister S.M. Daller', further inscribed inside the box 'Outside pieces 29 / Inside pc. 40 / total 69 / H S Daller / from his sister / S M Daller / 1811'; some age toning but complete and in fine condition. The first known puzzle map was issued by John Bowles in 1759; John Spilsbury began manufacturing in 1767, and the London map seller, publisher and maker of board games John Wallis Senior produced his first puzzle map, Darton's Kings and Queens, in 1787. The map depicted in the present puzzle was originally published in 1787 by John Wallis Senior, who occupied premises in Ludgate Hill from 1775. The firm moved, and Wallis Senior was located at 13 Warwick Square from 1805 to 1811, while John Wallis Junior was located at 188 Strand from 1806 to 1808. This dates the issue of this map in puzzle format to between 1806 and 1808. It is jointly published by son and father, with the son's name listed first as he is issuing the map in the format of a puzzle, most likely utilising unsold maps still held in stock by the family. The puzzle is one of a series, the slip title 'World' pasted onto the printed label. On other examples located in institutions, the title label has been substituted with 'America', 'Somerset', 'Europe', etc. The map itself is based on an earlier map by Thomas Kitchen and shows the three voyages of Cook, with 'Diemen's Land' still joined to the continent of New Holland. Wallis would publish other world maps in dissected puzzle format, with the same title label to the box; however, the maps are of a later date and bear the address '42 Skinner Street'. The State Library of New South Wales holds an earlier puzzle map, dated 1772-1775, which shows the route of Cook's first voyage; while the National Library of Australia has a puzzle map by Palmer from 1794 which shows Cook's three voyages. Like the Wallis example offered here, the Palmer example may have been issued in puzzle format later than the date of its imprint. With an imprint of 1787, it would appear that the example we offer here is the earliest puzzle map to show the three voyages of Cook. Not in Hannas; not in Whitehouse. No other example located.

[BOTANY BAY]. The whole proceedings on the trials of two informations

exhibited ex officio by the King's Attorney-General against George Gordon, Esq. commonly called Lord George Gordon : one for a libel on the Queen of France and the French Ambassador; the other for a libel on the judges, and the administration of the laws in England. Also of Thomas Wilkins, for printing the last-mentioned libel. Tried in the court of King's Bench, Guildhall, on Wednesday the 6th of June, 1787; before the Hon. Francis Buller, Esq. on of the justices of his Majesty's court of King's Bench. Taken in short-hand by Joseph Gurney. London : M. Gurney, 1787. Octavo, modern wrappers, pp 100, [2, lacking a final leaf of advertisements]. Joseph Gurney published a series of court reports from the 1770s - 1790s, including notably the trial against Thomas Paine in 1793.Lord George Gordon (1751-1793) was a British politician who, in his short but rich life, was embroiled in a number of controversies. He agitated against Catholic emancipation in 1780, resulting in a series of large scale demonstrations known as the 'Gordon Riots', and was imprisoned for several months in the Tower of London. Later, Gordon was excommunicated by the Archibishop of Canterbury for refusing to bear witness in an ecclesiastical suit in 1786. In 1787, at the age of 36, he converted to Judaism, took the name Yisrael bar Avraham Gordon, was circumcised, and lived the rest of his life as a devout orthodox Jew. This highly unusual act was widely commented on at the time and is discussed in a number of scholarly histories of Judaism in England. In 1786 Gordon authored a small pamphlet, 'The prisoners' petition to the Right Hon. Lord George Gordon, to preserve their lives and liberties, and prevent their banishments to Botany Bay', which was in fact entirely written by Gordon himself and printed in London by Thomas Wilkins. Criticising the judiciary for sentencing prisoners to transportation to an as-yet non-existant penal colony at Botany Bay, Gordon was charged with "for a libel on the judges and administration of law in England'. No copy of this pamphlet is known to have survived, though Ferguson records it as item 10 in his Bibliography of Australia on the basis of reference to it in a collection of state trials published later in 1783. Further, this account of the trial by Gurney evinces its existance, as he records the Solicitor-General presenting it in evidence during the prosecution. Gordon's second charge of libel against Queen Marie Antoinette and the French Ambassador, relates to a separate pamphlet he published where he defended his friend the Italian Count Cagliostro who had been banished from France following his alleged involvement in the Affair of the Diamond Necklace, a highly important political event where the Queen was accused of attempting to defraud the Crown Jewellers of a valuable diamond necklace. This stain upon her Majesty's reputation, in conjunction with other failures of the nobility, served to provide the background of hostility against the monarchy which culminated in the French Revolution. Gordon was convicted on both counts of libel, however, he was allowed to leave the court without bail, and subsequently escaped to the safety of The Netherlands. Upon pressure from the French he was forced to return in January 1788, was arrested, and sentenced to 5 years in Newgate Prison. On 28th January 1793 Gordon's sentence expired, he was required to appear before the court to vouch for his future good behaviour. At his appearance, Gordon refused to remove his hat, which was being utilised as a kippah, and it was forcibly removed from his head. Gordon had brought as character witnesses two Polish Jews, which the Court would not accept, and he was remanded once more in prison. On November 1st he died in prison from fever at the age of 42. No copy of Gordon's incendiary pamphlet of 1786 is know to have survived, however its contents are contained herein as part of the evidence transcribed in Gurney's record of 1787. Unknown to Ferguson and held in only a handful of libraries, this 1787 pamphlet records the first objections to the penal colony at Botany Bay, expressed in court while the First Fleet was en route under sail to New Holland. A single copy recorded in Australian collections (State Library of NSW, also appearing to lack the final two leaves of advertisements). Not in Ferguson.
