Critik der reinen Vernunft (Critique of Pure Reason)

KANT, Immanuel. Critik der reinen Vernunft (Critique of Pure Reason). Johann Friedrich Hartknoch, Riga, 1787. 1 blank leaf TP + 2 leaves = Dedication + [VII]-XLIV = Vorrede + [1]-884, [with pages 454 through 489 unnumbered as usual], Octavo. Second Edition. [Warda 60]Kant?s masterpiece, the book that made him world-famous, and arguably the most important book of philosophy published in modern times. "Kant?s great achievement was to conclude finally the line on which philosophical speculation had proceeded in the eighteenth century, and to open up a new and more comprehensive system of dealing with the problems of philosophy?" (PMM, p. 137). Having been woken from his "dogmatic slumbers" by his reading of Hume, Kant went on to effect a "Copernican" revolution in philosophy -- the effects of which have not yet subsided. The so-called "B" text which Kant heavily revised and which must be compared and contrasted with the original first edition "A" text. Almost all modern editions and translations blend elements of both the "A" and the "B" versions of the text.Kant included here his own substantive amplifications, corrections, and improvements, noting some but not all of these in the new Introduction. At the time, Kant considered this to be the "definitive edition," but made further incorporations in the 1790 edition (see next item}. Today, philosophers still think it necessary to have both the "A" and "B" versions of the text available when studying the work. Contemporary half-leather with marbled boards. Spine with surface/visual cracking only to leather, but solid. Beautiful contemporary hand-scripted label to spine. Light scuffing to boards. Neatly written notes to front free endpaper in contemporary hand. Internally near fine. This is a gorgeous copy, tightly bound with only some visual cracking to spine leather.

Engraved portrait of Serra facing page one, folding engraved map matted separately (edges and corners of early leaves expertly strengthened, last leaf remargined, very light dampstaining in margins of a few leaves). Contemporary limp vellum, title written in manuscript on the front cover and spine, remains of two pairs of ties (extremities a bit scuffed, one or two stains). Provenance: with early inscription of Del P. Beistegui at the foot of the title-page, Sr. Juan Munos Capitan General del provincia de Mord [?]" in the margin of page [xvi], and one or two other early marginal annotations. First Edition, the issue with "Pro" instead of "Car" at the end of the index , the map with the text "Mar Pacifico" added, and the text above the imprint reading: "A Expensas de Don Miguel Gonzalez Calderon sindico de dicho apostolico colegio". Francoso's celebrated map ".shows only the California coast and peninsula, with nothing eastward of the mouths of the Colorado and Gila rivers, but while its main purpose was to trace the travels of Father Serra during his years of service along the western coast, it is of interest here because it seems to be the first on which a boundary line was drawn between Lower and Upper California. As will be later noted, the line thus shown was not the boundary eventually established, even at its western end" (Wheat, pp. 128-129). "Relacion Histoica." written by Serra's fellow Franciscan, disciple and lifelong friend Palou is the primary source for the life of Father Serra and his founding of the California missions. Serra worked among the natives in the "Sierra Gorda region north of Mexico City. For eight years he translated Christian doctrine and prayers into the language of the Pames Indians. With them, in the mid-1750s, Serra also helped to build a large stone church in Jalpan (in the state of Queretaro in the Sierra Gorda Mountains), which is still used for worship today. His intensity, hard work, and uninhibited delight in God's creation impressed his companions. In 1758 Serra was reassigned to the Mexican capital, where he undertook the duties of administrator at the College of San Fernando and the ministries of a traveling missionary priest. During this time, plagued by asthma and a painful leg injury, Serra increasingly identified with the Catholic mystical tradition that sought spiritual purification through suffering. "In early 1767 King Charles III suddenly expelled the Jesuits from Spain and its colonies. The following year Serra was placed in charge of the orphaned Jesuit missions on the Baja (lower) California peninsula. Moreover, with the Russians moving from Alaska down the western coast of North America, the Spanish charged him to establish missions in Alto (upper) California. It was this final venture that became Serra's greatest legacy. "At the age of fifty-five Serra accompanied the overland "Sacred Expedition" under Gaspar de Portolá, which reached San Diego in the summer of 1769 and founded the first mission in American California there on 16 July. The next objective was Monterey, some 400 miles to the north, where the second mission, San Carlos Borromeo, was founded on 3 June 1770. Fortified by its presidio, Monterey served as the capital of California and as Serra's headquarters as he served as the father president of the missions for the next fourteen years. Under his direction, nine California missions were founded, teaching the Indian peoples Christian doctrine, literacy, agricultural techniques, building, pottery making, and other skills. Following the teachings of his order and the ideals of Catholic Spain, Serra administered a mission system that helped to transform tribal hunting and gathering economies with loose social organization into more settled, regimented communities that sought to "prepare souls for heaven." By the time of Serra's death an estimated 5,000 neophytes were living in the missions along with 500 Spanish soldiers and settlers" [Attributes: First Edition]

        Jardin anglo-chinois

1787. LE ROUGE, George Louis. Les Jardins Anglo-Chinois. Twenty Cahiers. Oblong folio, 290 x 440 mm, bound in nineteenth-century French grey-green cloth and modern French paper over boards for Cahiers V and XIII. Various sheet sizes, a number of the illustrations are large folding plates. Paris: Chez Le Rouge, 1776-1787. |~||~||~||~||~| A near-complete set of this extremely rare First and Only Edition of Le Rouge's monumental publication, without the final Cahier XXI containing six plates, missing as per usual. Le Rouge's impressive illustrated record of garden design is the fullest eighteenth-century collection of engraved views of gardens in the prevailing Anglo-Chinese manner and also of contemporary gardens in other traditions. The names of the architects and gardeners who created these gardens are all indicated, and the views of their work are scrupulously engraved. As soon as the Jardins Anglo-Chinois was published, it was considered to be an irreplaceable reference work and a unique source of inspiration. And today, over two hundred years later, it remains the premier record of these vanished landscape designs. The range extends chronologically from George Loudon's early eighteenth-century layout at Wanstead (well-illustrated on six plates) to the Jardin de Monceau and Ermenonville. The plates comprise a great number of plans for gardens as a whole and for individual parterres, woodlands and labyrinths, also designs for pavilions, temples, kiosks, dairies and similar garden buildings in classical, Gothic and Chinese styles. There are additional illustrations of balustrades and treillage, bridges, menageries, aviaries, theatres and amphitheatres, grottoes, hermitages, greenhouses, cascades, fountains and statuary. There is extensive coverage of the major gardens and a host of minor gardens in England, France and Germany. Among English gardens Stowe and Kew are dominant, alongside less expected ones like Blair Atholl and Buckingham House (the garden of the future Buckingham Palace). French gardens given prominence include those of the Chateau at Roissy, M. de Saint-James's garden at Neuilly, many gardens in and around Paris, Marly, the Trianon, and so on. Germany is well represented by Pigage's Schwetzingen in its formal French style before the later picturesque additions, and by the garden of the episcopal palace of Wurzburg, shown on six very fine plates after drawings by its designer, the court gardener J. P. Mayer. The Bagno at Steinfort, Count von Bentheim's residence near Munster, gets the widest coverage of any European garden, taking up almost the whole of three cahiers in 54 plates. From the point of view of garden theory the most interesting parts of Le Rouge are cahiers IV and V. Cahier IV reproduces in a different format and without acknowledgement, almost the whole of the illustrations of Overton's Temple Builder's Most Useful Companion (published in 1766), and Wrighte's Grotesque Architecture (published in 1767), both collections of designs for garden buildings intended for an English readership and now transformed for continental use. Cahier V comprises Chambers' Traite des edifices, meubles, habits, machines, et ustensiles des chinois, the only instance of the use of a printed text in the entire 21 cahiers and emphasising Chambers' importance as the interpreter of Chinese buildings and gardens to Western taste. Cahier V is frequently lacking from surviving copies. The crowning achievement of Le Rouge's Jardins Anglo-Chinois is a series of 97 plates, making up the four cahiers XIV, XV, XVI and XVII, which show the gardens and palaces of the Emperor Qianlong of China. The original drawings were made in China after paintings on silk, at the instigation of the Swedish ambassador, and entrusted to the Marquis de Biencourt to be engraved in Paris. They go far beyond Chambers in their accurate depiction of the palaces and their surroundings, and they give the first coherent picture of Chinese landscaped gardens with their pavilions, artificial mounds, numerous pavilions, zig-zag steps, streams with waterfalls and bridges, pines and ornamental trees and groups of stones. Copies of the Jardins Anglo-Chinois are of the greatest rarity in any condition: virtually all surviving copies are incomplete. Witness, the Berlin copy (described in the Ornamentstichsammlung), which lacks part 5 and 21; and the Guilmard copy (recorded in Les Maitres Ornamenistes), which lacks parts 1-7 and 20-21; furthermore, there is not a single perfect copy recorded by OCLC in North America. OCLC lists 3 copies of various collations in America: Princeton, Philadelphia Museum of Art, one in Canada at CCA, and one in England at Cambridge University. Even Jacques Charles Brunet, in his Manuel du libraire of 1820, had pointed out how difficult it was to obtain a complete set. This set is nearly complete; lacking only the final Cahier XXI with six plates (almost always the case) and Cahier I has a duplicate of plate #3 and is lacking plate #2, a ground plan of the pavillon de Laboissiere. Some minor staining and insignificant tears, overall a handsome set of one of the great monuments in the history of book-making. A rare book on the market. PROVENANCE: Emily Jane Mercer-Elphinstone-de Flahault, 8th Lady Nairne, Marchioness of Lansdowne, with her ex-libris. The Lansdowne family owned Bowood Estates, transformed by Capability Brown into one of England's premier landscape parks. Berlin Katalog 3312. Guimard 260-261. Jellicoe, pp. 335-6. Ketcham, pp. 69-95. Brunet III, 998. For a complete collation and reproduction of each illustration, see: Véronique Royet, George Louis Le Rouge: Les Jardins anglo-chinois. A FULL COLLATION OF THE PRESENT COPY FOLLOWS: Cahier I: 27 plates, numbered 1-23; plus 3 plates of engraved text (on 2 leaves), numbered 24-26; and 1 unnumbered folding plate.         Histoire de Dannemarc

Third and best edition; she is the most complete effect. Before composing this set, several editions have appeared: first an introduction to the history of Annemark in 1755, and which forms in our model the first volume illustrated with a large folding map of Scandinavia. Two volumes in 4 appear a few years later, then a third. The story was then continued until 1720, and then until 1773 in this edition. Paperback, covered with a nineteenth blue paper. Labels handwritten titles and volume numbers. Excellent condition. Remarkably fresh copy and printed on heavy paper, retaining margins of publication, except for the high margin trimmed. The book is considered the best ancient history of Denmark, it is indeed well documented, and also contains a study of mythology and fables of 33 that composes the Edda, and other epics. Before the historical narrative, the first two volumes are an anthropological approach of Denmark, addressing the specificity of this country both for its geographical location and its customs and mythology. The author lived a long time in Denmark and was tutor to the prince reigning at the same time he held a professorship at the Royal College of Copenhagen.       Berlin, Haude und Spener, 1787-1788.. .

- Kaum fleckig. Vier Kupfer alt aufgezogen. Vereinzelt Teil einer Darstellung in schwächerem Abdruck. - Nicolas, Duncker, 102. Cohen/Ricci 701 f. Sander 1339 (verzeichnet: "Yverdon 1785 ou Berne 1787 ou Yverdon 1787"). Lewine S. 353.         Critik der reinen Vernunft von Immanuel Kant, Professor in Königsberg, der Königl. Akademie der Wissenschaften in Berlin Mitglied. Zweyte hin und wieder verbesserte Auflage.

Riga, Hartknoch 1787.. XLIV; 884 Seiten (Seite 454 - 483 unpa- giniert, Seite 561 - 576 fehlt !). (20,2 x 14,2 cm) 8°. *

Robert Newman? Docketed on verso ?Funeral / Expenses of / Billah / 1787.? According to Todd W. Van Beck in the ""Handbook of Death and Dying,"" Clifton D. Bryant, Editor in Chief (Thousand Oaks, California: Sage Publications, 2003), ""Probably the oldest documentation of an undertaker being certified to do the job occurred in Boston during 1786. City records indicate that Robert Newman was registered that year with the Selectmen of Boston (the town council) as 'one of those willing to undertake the charge of funerals.' ?It was undertaker-sexton Robert Newman who, on April 18, 1775, hung the lanterns in the steeple of Old North Church to alert the colonial militia of the British invasion, which culminated in the battles of Lexington and Concord and the American Revolution."" Robert Newman hung two lanterns to signal that the British were marching to Lexington and Concord by sea across the Charles River and not by land. A new and authentic system of universal geography, antients and modern including all the late and important discoveries INSPIRED BY THE VOYAGES OF COOK

With 100 unnumbered plates, including frontispiece and 22 maps (12 folding). Without a revised list of plates and instructions to the binder sometimes recorded in other copies of later editions and possibly lacking the two-page list of subscribers (though no extant copies of the fifth, or sixth, or seventh editions record it, suggesting it was never issued at all in the later editions). Some browning and wear to the pages, particularly around the edges. A few of the plates have tears in the margins, 2 of which affect the engravings (1 repaired). Generally a very clean copy with no major damage. Later edition (possibly fifth) of this rare and important work, which aimed to deliver the most accurate, impressive, and up-to-date system of universal geography available. Although this thick tome boasts ?"a genuine history and description of the whole world,?" a sizeable portion of its contents is devoted to the discoveries of Captain James A. Cook. The text begins with a description of New Holland (the historic name for Australia), where Cook had landed less than twenty years before, and includes updated information on Botany Bay, Norfolk Island, and Port Jackson - - the first European settlement in Australia. Cook?'s voyages also inspired many of the plates. In addition to the maps and city views, Bankes also commissioned ethnographic plates depicting both exotic and familiar types, from ?"The King of the Congo preparing for an excursion?" to ?"Ancient English dresses.?" Bankes?'s work must have been quite popular in its day as there were at least seven known editions executed in quick succession between 1787-1797. Unfortunately, none of them are firmly dated in the title or elsewhere. Although research into the various editions and their dates of publication has thus far been scanty at best, Alan Frost?'s inquiry in the La Trobe Journal offers some insight into this convoluted problem. According to his research, the copy here most closely resembles the Mitchell Library?'s copy, thought to be the fifth edition (originally thought to be fourth - see his Addendum), which Frost assigns a date of 1792, in line with certain historical references in the text. The bulk of the text remained the same from edition to edition, and the only major differences lie in the title wording, the prefatory material, and the incorporation of new travel accounts, set forth in the opening pages. Frost also notes that the number of plates was reduced and refined in later editions, though he does not give any details about what those changes were. In their research on maps, Perry and Prescott offered a different theory -- that Bankes?'s work was issued in ?"90 weekly parts?" and that only the titles and the New Holland section were updated and reissued at intervals. It is not entirely clear how they arrived at this conclusion, but given that the volume is numbered consecutively from 1-990 rather than 11 page cycles, and that there is no mention of weekly issues anywhere in the text, it seems unlikely that this was the case. Bankes (b. 1744) was a Reverend, Vicar of Dixton in Monmouthshire, and author of one other book entitled The Christian?'s Family Bible. Little else about Bankes?'s life and work has been recorded, despite the clear popularity of his geographical masterpiece.

Eel, 1787-87-88. First edition; a presentation copy of the handsome catalogue of the magnificent collection of ancient Greek and Roman coins and medals formed by Charlotte Sophie, Gräfin von Bentinck (1715-1800), a member of a wealthy Dutch family. She traveled widely — Copenhagen, Berlin, Vienna, throughout Italy and Holland — which enabled her to form her great collection, one of the finest of its kind. This is the only record. The catalogue, printed on thick and large paper, contains 188 very finely engraved vignettes in the text depicting some of the medals. The rare supplement, published in 1788, is present. A fine and attractive set, with a presentation inscription on the free front endpaper from the Countess, dated Hamburg, 26 July 1787. ? A.D.B., Vol. II, pp. 343-44.
