Letters of William Russell, on the doctrine of constructive contempt. With a true copy of the original affidavit, upon which the sheriff of the county of Dublin was attached, and an accurate report of the judgment of the King's Bench in that case.

Dublin: [s.n.] 8vo (20.4 cm, 8"). [iii]–xl, 155, [1] pp. (lacking half-title).. 1786 Sole edition of this strongly worded epistolary examination of constructive contempt (contempt of court which occurs outside of the court's actual presence) and its role in Sheriff Henry Steevens Reily's case — the disposition of which the author considered an attempt to subvert the rights of free Irish citizens. The dedication to Prime Minister William Pitt makes particular note of the "independent situation of Irish courts" (p. vii). While this work is certainly held in the expectable Irish libraries, it is => little held in British or American libraries. In fact, searches of NUC, ESTC, and WorldCat locate only two copies in the U.S., both in the northeast. Period-style half calf and marbled paper–covered sides, spine with gilt-stamped title. Half-title lacking; title-page with early inked inscriptions in upper portion (one inked over), lower corners torn away, and edges chipped as next few leaves' are; first dedication page with early 20th-century inscription in inner margin. Pages darkened, especially at edges, and a good many bumped; last four leaves tattered with old repairs to lower corners taking a few letters but not sense, and once-separated final leaf with repairs also to upper and inner margins. A copy with some rough aspects, but one now sound and => a book that's scarce.

THE ANTIQUITIES OF ENGLAND AND WALES. [bound uniformly with] THE ANTIQUITIES OF SCOTLAND. [and] THE ANTIQUITIES OF IRELAND. [and] MILITARY ANTIQUITIES RESPECTING A HISTORY OF THE ENGLISH ARMY. [and] A TREATISE ON ANCIENT ARMOUR AND WEAPONS. [and] SUPPLEMENT TO A TREATISE ON ANCIENT ARMOUR. [and] DARELL, W. THE HISTORY OF DOVER CASTLE

London: S. Hooper, 1786-95. FIRST EDITIONS of "Scotland," "Ireland," Military Antiquities," "Supplement," and "Dover Castle." y. This is a very attractively bound set of all of the major publications--in their fully expanded form--of English antiquary Francis Grose. First published in six volumes in 1772, "Antiquities of England and Wales" was Grose's breakthrough work, establishing his name and reputation. It was released in expanded new editions and supplemented over the next dozen years; our 1787 edition contains the most complete text, with all additions and supplements. Grose followed up on this success with his works on military antiquities and on armor. These well-illustrated and useful works combine a history of the English army with a treatise on weapons and armor, "illustrated by plates taken from the original armour in the Tower of London, and other arsenals, museums, and cabinets." "Military Antiquities" is not the history of battles, but the history of the development and organization of the army, examining such things as the requirements for military service, methods of mustering troops, rates of pay, and standard weapons and equipment for the various historical periods. "Ancient Armour" and its "Supplement" contain a discussion of English armor (with a small section on Asiatic armor) from the Norman conquest until it fell out of use after the general employment of gunpowder, along with a general history of the development of armor and weapons. Driven partly by insatiable curiosity and partly by the need for funds, Grose went on to publish surveys of the antiquities in Scotland and Ireland, and was working on the latter at the time of his death. Born and educated in England, Francis Grose (1731?-91) studied classics and art. At the death of his father (a Swiss jeweller resident in England who designed the crown used by George III), Grose inherited a substantial fortune, which he squandered in short order. DNB says that "Grose has been described as a sort of antiquarian Falstaff. He was immensely corpulent, full of humor and good nature." Grose died of apoplexy in Dublin, still hard at work ferreting out more fodder for his work. While his various "Antiquities" appear on the market with some regularity, it is uncommon to find such a complete set in such pleasant bindings. The final volume here is not by Grose, but fits in well with his antiquarian studies. Although author William Darell lived and wrote in the 16th century, producing a noted work on Kentish castles, the 1786 publication of the "Dover Castle" portion of that work was his first appearance in print. Darell was a prebendary at Canterbury Cathedral and announced the election of Matthew Parker as archbishop, but he had a sharp fall from grace in the late 1570s when he was caught smuggling a lady of dubious reputation into his quarters in a laundry basket.. 285 x 220 mm. (11 1/4 x 8 5/8"); ("Scotland" 10 mm. shorter). 16 volumes. FIRST EDITIONS of "Scotland," "Ireland," Military Antiquities," "Supplement," and "Dover Castle." HANDSOME CONTEMPORARY RED STRAIGHT-GRAIN MOROCCO, GILT, covers with frame of plain and dotted rules and two decorative rolls, oblique fleuron cornerpieces, flat spines divided into compartments by decorative rolls, octagonal centerpiece containing a star tool, with lancets radiating toward corners, gilt titling, gilt-rolled turn-ins, marbled endapers, all edges gilt. With 56 vignette maps of the counties of England and Wales, hand-colored in outline, and 633 (of 635) plates, including a folding map; lacking the plates of Stanstead Place and Malmsbury Market Cross in "England." Front pastedowns with bookplates of Samuel Rodbard and Hugh and Frances Fattorini. A hint of darkening to some spines, extremities just slightly rubbed, a few minor spots or stains to boards, but the bindings entirely sound, with very little wear, and making an extremely pleasing appearance on the shelf. Occasional marginal smudges, mild offsetting or minor foxing from some of the plates (more pronounced in half a dozen instances), but A REALLY EXCELLENT SET, clean and fresh inside and out, and with few signs of use. This is a very attractively bound set of all of the major publications--in their fully expanded form--of English antiquary Francis Grose.         Reales Ordenanzas para la Direccion, Regimen y Gobierno del Importante Cuerpo de la Mineria de Nueva-Espana...

Lima: Casa Real de los Ninos Huerfanos, 1786. Second Lima edition. Quarto, title-page, pp lxxix, vii, 269. [Palau 251938: Sabin 56260] Laws relating to the practice of mining in New Spain (Mexico), prepared by, or most likely for, Josef de Galvez, whose name does not appear on the title page, but does on the final page. First published in Madrid in a folio edition in 1783, then in Lima, in folio, in 1785: then this quarto edition was published the year later; it was republished as late as 1833 in Chile. This celebrated and comprehensive code was drawn up by the Mexican mining court in consultation with the Spanish crown, and served as the basis of the mining law of most Spanish-American countries until the late nineteenth century; it became law also in both Peru and the Río de la Plata viceroyalty in 1794. Galvez, a lawyer by profession, was an important royal official (Visitador), of the highest rank, who spent the years of 1765 - 71 in Mexico . He sponsored the settlement of California and generally reformed Mexican finances and civil service under the new Bourbon dispensation. (He suffered from mental illness and apparently ended his own life.) He was created the Marques de Sonora for his valuable services to the crown, among which may be numbered this digest of mining laws, of which Sabin says it is "a rare and valuable compendium of the old mining laws and mineral customs." This printing house was an important one in colonial Lima; it was a royal orphanage whose members were trained in the trade of printing. Fine, fresh copy, with marbled edges and bound in contemporary vellum (ties missing).

Lima 4to. [1] f., LXXIX, [1 (blank)], VII, [1 (blank)], 269, [1 (blank)] pp.. 1786 Royal decrees relating to mining in New Spain: discovery of new mines, operation of old ones, training of workers and royal officials, duties of experts, introduction of new technology, role of the Tribunal de la Minería and the requirements (including purity of blood) for appointment to it, and many more aspects of this important economic activity. The work was carefully compiled and indexed by José de Galvez, was originally printed in Madrid in 1783, and is here in the first printing to take place in a viceroyalty. Sabin calls this work a "rare and valuable compendium of the old mining laws and mineral customs." Galvez was a special commissioner charged with making reforms in the governing of Mexico; his work greatly influenced the 1786 replacement of the Mexican provinces with 12 intendencias. The 18th century saw a rebirth of the Mexican and the Peruvian silver industry as new technologies and techniques were introduced. Concomitant with the increased production was increased wealth for the mine owners and the crown. Recent calf bordered in gilt tooling, spine with gilt bands and floral devices in compartments, gilt-stamped leather title label; a few very small scuffs to covers. All edges sprinkled blue and red. Title-page recto and verso with inked ownership inscriptions in an early hand. Final leaf with repairs to outer edge; penultimate two leaves with lower corners torn away, outer edge of one with small chewed portion. Occasional spots of foxing. Two worm pinholes to title-page; more extensive worming to inner margins of central 20 leaves, on some pages touching text without affecting comprehensibility. Handsome.

Bruchsal, gedruckt mit Bevernschen Schriften 1786 - 8 S. Vorrede v. August Bischof zu Speier, 28 S. Inhalt, 636 S., 16 S. Register 4°. Halbleder, Rückenschildchen goldgeprägt, Einband berieben, Buchecken bestoßen, Rücken unten etwas fransig, innen teils etwas fleckig, aber durchaus altersentsprechend gut SEHR SELTEN ///////// Damian August Philipp Karl Reichsgraf von Limburg-Stirum (* 16. März 1721; gest. 26.

All quartets continuously numbered 1-30 in manuscript (headers to all pages). Occasional notational corrections. Slightly foxed and soiled. . "The enormous popularity of Pleyel’s music during his lifetime is reflected in the testimony of contemporary journals and of early writers like Gerber and Fétis. The small town of Nantucket, Massachusetts, then still a whaling port, formed a Pleyel Society in 1822 ‘to chasten the taste of auditors’, according to a newspaper announcement. The most telling evidence of the appeal of his music lies in the thousands of manuscript copies that filled the shelves of archives, libraries, churches, castles and private homes and in the thousands of editions produced in Europe and North America. In quality the works vary greatly, although most show considerable facility and a thorough technical grounding. The earlier works in particular display thematic originality and ingenious developments that make them fresh and attractive. After about 1792 his talent seems to have diminished; his inventiveness waned and he occasionally succumbed to routine procedures." Rita Benton in Grove Music Online.
