      - XXVIII-119 pp., [1] ff.

Bel exemplaire. Balland, 38. Oberlé, Fastes.., n° 814

Fine Autograph Letter Signed to [Charles] Blagden, secretary to the Royal Society, 2 closely-written pages 4to with address-leaf and red wax seal, Austhorpe, 22 August 1786.

      - Commenting on the recent minute of the Longitude and Latitude of York, 'the best determination we have had', providing further calculations for Austhorpe, and commenting on the recent weather which has affected his observations. '. I kept my letter open in hopes to have got a Transit of the Sun; to have ascertained the going of the Clock since the 16th: and this morning afforded some transitory gleams . and then came on a great black cloud. Notwithstanding watching every opportunity, I have had but 3 Transits since I came home. .'Smeaton withdrew from active work in civil engineering for three years following the death of his wife Ann on her 59th birthday in January 1784. A disastrous project resulting in the collapse of Hexham Bridge in 1782 had also contributed. Smeaton refers to this in his lengthy postscript: '. as you probably may go to see the Pier and works at Whitby if you mention me to Mr Pickernel the Engineer, he will be particularly attentive to you: not that he wants natural civility. I recomended him to the trustees, upon the merit of his having acquitted himself, not only to my own, but every ones satisfaction, as resident surveyor to my unfortunate work of Hexham Bridge. .'Smeaton concludes in his postscript with a detailed description of Ruswarps Mill near Whitby, noting:'. it has many very ingenious contrivances about it, but it is totally deficient in that branch of the art, that I have principally cultivated; that is the art of producing the greatest degree of Power, with a given quantity of water and fall.'During this period of retirement from active work, Smeaton began the lengthy task of writing his Narrative of the Building . of the Edystone Lighthouse'. Charles Blagden (1748-1820) was Secretary of the Royal Society from 1784 to 1797.

Minime fioriture. Una firma antica al titolo. Bella copia in barbe. Prima edizione, molto rara. Reale, Miscell. Storia patria 64, Memorie storiche intorno all'origine di Beroldo di Sassonia).". Spreti, 999. Saffroy, I, n. 3975. Manno, I, 2621. D.B.I., cit. Italiano

Paris: Desnos, 1786. In excellent state.. Finely hand coloured engraved wall-map on 6 sheets joined, 105 x 93 cms. Framed. This large twin-hemispherical world map was separately issued and is outstandingly decorative. It is a very fine example of Desnos's rare and impressive hand coloured wall map - including the tracks of Cook's three voyages. Set within lunar and other astronomical and astrological dials, the lower portion of the map is supported by Corinthian columns decorated with instructive panels, whilst the architectural plinth has tablets inserted which give rich geographical information on the three ancient continents of Europe, Asia and Africa. In the second half of the eighteen century the intellectual classes were developing a deep interest in science including the study of astronomy and this map is a example of the prevailing knowledge of the entire universe - surrounding the double hemisphere maps are the zones of the earth, the phases of the moon, lunar calendars and the solar systems.Called by Shirley "a veritable compendium of a map" this is one of the most richly informative maps ever to have been published. Originally issued by Jaugeon in 1688 it was re-issued several times during the eighteenth century. All issues are remarkably rare and virtually unseen on the market. This 1786 issue offered, the edition by Brion de la Tour and edited by Desnos was re- engraved to show the tracks of all three of the Cook voyages to the Pacific during the expeditions between 1768 and 1780. This large and magnificent wall map is, in this fine original condition an exceptional rarity.

Two laid paper sheets measuring 315 x 205 mm., the first comprising the manuscript letter, the second being the original cover sheet with docket title. Early manuscript document pre-dating the departure of the First Fleet concerning two principal figures in the foundation of the penal colony at New South Wales. The letter concerns a directive of Lord Sydney and is signed by Evan Nepean in his role as Under-Secretary of State. Nepean (1752-1822) was appointed secretary to Lord Shuldham, Port-Admiral at Plymouth in 1782, and later that year became Under-Secretary of State in the Home Department. In this capacity he was concerned in the arrangements for the dispatch of the First Fleet and the administration of the newly established settlement at Sydney Cove during its formative years. Thomas Townshend, Lord Sydney, is remembered as the principal instigator of the British colonisation of Australia, a keen proponent of convict transportation and close associate of Sir Joseph Banks. In this letter, written in his official capacity as Under-Secretary of State, Nepean transmits a directive of Lord Sydney to the Scotsman Hamilton Fleming, who had recently submitted a petition to the Crown claiming ancestral right to a title. The letter is fully signed 'Evan Nepean', who was honoured in the colony through the naming of the Nepean River in New South Wales, and later Point Nepean in Victoria.

Plano De La Ciudad De Quito

1786 - Contributing to a very short list of cartographic renderings of the Ecuadorian Capital City. 1786. Madrid. Striking impression, on strong paper, wide margins and striking impression, a virtually flawless copy. 355 mm x 390 mm. An excellent separately published map of Quito, closely following the design by Jorge Juan and Antonio de Ulloa –published at the Viage a la America Meridional, however slightly different; an extensive numbered key dominates the map, and shows the city centered at the main square with a good projection of the outskirts. Tomas Lopez (1731 - 1802) was one of the foremost Spanish mapmakers and publishers of the 18th century; he studied under Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville in Paris, until returning to Madrid in 1760, when became Royal Geographer to King Charles III. His position gained him access to otherwise inaccessible sources of information, manuscript charts, recent geographical discoveries, and engineering labors altering the geographical reality of a region, guaranteeing his maps as the most up-to-date published in Spain. Tooley, Dictionary of Mapmakers, 154.

An enormous transaction and early mention of the notorious John Nicholson, before he was forced out of office for corruption and joined in Robert Morris' speculative schemes.

Londonderry, February 26, 1786. 9" x 15". "Autograph Letter Signed, ""W. Stewart,"" 3 pages, 9"" x 15"", Londonderry, July 26, 1786, concerning a variety of financial matters. Partial separation along horizontal center fold, light toning and soiling, marginal repairs with glassine, a few minor losses, else good condition overall.A wide ranging letter written by a Philadelphia merchant, offering instructions to his partner and includes a reference to John Nicholson, then in his capacity of Comptroller General of Pennsylvania: ""...You say the Interest you receiv'd for me was £1250, some mistake must have taken place as you ought yearly to get £1389. The loan office Certificates am[oun]t to 53600 Dollars or £20,000 t p[e]rc[en]t is £2300 - Depreciation Ones ... 52.5.3 Final Settlements .... 135.10.10. The Interest on the Depreciation ones is to be received by an Order from Mr. John Nicholson at the Comptrollers office, that or the final Settlements from the Treasurer of the Loan Office. I mention those things only to prevent your having more trouble than necessary in the receiving of it; & should any of the Certificates have the last years due on them, the two years can be received at once...""The same year as this letter, the State of Pennsylvania authorized Nicholson to collect taxes and in 1787, he became escheator-general with the ability to liquidate estates confiscated from Loyalists. Unfortunately for Nicholson, he had an unfortunate penchant for mixing public and private finances which prompted the state to conduct a two-year long investigation of his practices from 1792 to 1794. While he was never found guilty of wrongdoing, he resigned all of his public offices in 1794. Nicholson subsequently went into partnership with Robert Morris, helping fuel a speculative real estate bubble that would land them both in debtor's prison by the time the decade had concluded. Walter Stewart (1756–1796) was born in Londonderry, Ireland, and settled in Philadelphia before the Revolution, opening the mercantile firm of Stewart & Nesbitt in partnership with Alexander Nesbitt. During the Revolution he served with distinction in several Pennsylvania regiments and as aide-de-camp to Horatio Gates. After the war he returned to his business enterprises in Philadelphia. "

Spanish legal reorganization for Mexico, Texas, the Californias, New Mexico, and Arizona. Folio; contemporary calf. First edition of one of the basic documents of colonial Mexican history. The reorganization of Mexico into intendancies, based on Colbert’s departmental system of France, was a prime objective of the famous visitador José de Gálvez and those who collaborated in the development of the viceroyalty of Mexico. This is the King’s official proclamation for the institution of the plan. The book is finely printed in a large Roman type on a very good quality Spanish paper (watermark type of Heawood 324). *Sabin 56259: "This body of laws, relating to the government of Mexico and its provinces, is of the highest importance." This collection of official rules and regulations covering every aspect of life in New Spain was the fundamental law in many parts of what is now the United States for over three decades, since it was in force in Texas, the Californias, New Mexico, and Arizona. It is an important source for the history of all those regions for the late Spanish colonial period. Sabin fails to call for the engraved frontispiece or the 200-page addenda under separate title: "Leyes de la Recopilación de Indias, Cédulas Reales, Ordenanzas y otras soberanas Declaraciones". 1 volumen(es)/volume(s) S.P. páginas [Attributes: First Edition]

[TWO AUTOGRAPH DOCUMENTS, EACH SIGNED BY RICHARD VARICK, CONCERNING JAMES SEAGROVE]

New York, 1786. [4]pp. on a single folded sheet. Folio. Old fold lines. Second leaf inlaid in a frame of later paper. Some light wear and soiling. Very good. In a thick red half morocco and cloth clamshell case, spine gilt. Two separate depositions on the same sheet, each written and signed by Richard Varick as the New York State Recorder. This was at the beginning of Varick's illustrious political career; he later served as New York State Attorney General (1788-89) and was Mayor of New York City from 1789 to 1801. The depositions concern the whereabouts and activities of one James Seagrove during the Revolutionary War. They were given by Charles McEvers and William Constable, and are each similar, though some details do differ. James Seagrove (1747- 1812) engaged in various business activities with Constable during the war, and developed a network of mercantile and diplomatic contacts with the Spanish and the Indians along the Georgia borders. He seems to have been a double agent. The state and federal governments used his talents in various missions to the southern tribes early in the war. Then, Seagrove resided within the British lines in New York during 1777-78. He moved to Philadelphia while it was occupied by the British and remained there after the British evacuation in June 1778. According to McEvers' account, Seagrove remained in Philadelphia until 1780, when he became an aide-de-camp to General Lincoln in the Continental Army. According to Constable's account, Seagrove joined the Comte d'Estaing's squadron and went to Rhode Island. Both accounts agree, however, that Seagrove was captured with General Lincoln by Sir Henry Clinton in May 1780, at Charleston. Exchanged in 1781, Seagrove went to Havana, and "...remained out of the power of the British troops during the remainder of the war...," according to the deposition, but out of the Americans' reach as well. An interesting pair of depositions, summarizing important campaigns in the Revolutionary War.

The Holy Bible, Containing the Old and New Testaments: Newly translated out of the original tongues.

Printed by the Assigns of Alexander Kincaid, Edinburgh 1786 - 2 vols, 12mo, ff. [275]; [253]. Contemporary Scottish red morocco, boards bordered with three different gilt rolls, spines elaborately gilt with oval green morocco onlays also gilt, marbled endpapers, edges gilt. A tiny paper flaw to one leaf touching a character, horizontal closed tear in another with no loss, paper a little age-toned. Spines very slightly darkened, the merest touch of rubbing to extremities. A very attractive example of late 18th-century Scottish bookbinding - and not only an attractive copy, but a scarce printing of the bible: ESTC locates just four copies of this edition, at the BL, NLS, EUL, and Rylands. The New Testament and the Psalms of David have separate title-pages but the signatures are continuous throughout; an Apocrypha was also available to accompany this edition, but signed separately and usually not included, as here. This copy belonged to various members of the Crawford family, originally from Fife, though George Crawford (1748-1814) served in the Royal Artillery and was stationed at Woolwich in Kent - he almost certainly brought this book down with him from Scotland. The front endpapers record not only the birth of George's daughter Annabella in 1804, his death in 1814 and his wife Bethia's in 1824, but also the preaching of a sermon at the Scots Church in Woolwich by the Rev. Blyth. It was later given to George Benjamin Caffin by his mother, Annabella's sister, in memory of her early death in 1825. ESTC T123181. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        The trial of Mrs Ann Wood, wife of William Wood, Esq. Commissary and Pay-Master of Artillery;

8vo., engraved frontispiece, (2) 9 - 76 [i.e. 92]pp., pp.89-92 misnumbered 73-76, most leaves with largely marginal foxing, with advertisements on verso of title-page but no additional advertisement leaf, well bound in 19th/20th century half calf over marbled boards, spine lettered in gilt, minor wear to extremities, bookplate on front pastedown of Los Angeles Board of Law library. ESTC finds copies only at BL Lambeth Palace Niedersachsische-Staats-und Universitatsbibliothek NYPL. An Irish (Dublin) reprint is found at the Royal Irish Academy St. Patrick's College). A deliciously sordid adultery case with graphic descriptions by a whole string of witnesses, usually servants and domestic staff. It is a story of "the foul crime of adultery", with stained sheets, crumpled beds, bribed servants and shameless sex. The graphic engraved frontispiece is divided into three compartments, identified as: "Bed-Chamber Scene", "Sopha Scene", and "Lord Mayors Day Scene". Ann Wood's adulterous affairs seem to have been even more reprehensible in view of her husband's absence on government service in America. The pair had originally lived in America, were married at the Presbyterian church in New York in 1763, had lived apparently in various places in New York and Pennsylvania, where Ann had produced four children. She and her children were shipped back to England in March 1778 for their own safety. She bought a house in Curzon Street, Mayfair, and the "notorious" affair with Quintin Dick soon began.

Proceedings at a meeting of the British inhabitants of Fort St. George, Madras, on Monday, September 19, 1785, in consequence of a summons by the High Sheriff of the said town. With an address to His Majesty, and petitions to both Houses of Parliament, on the subject of Mr. Pitt's East-India Bill.

London: J. Debrett. MDCCLXXXVI [1786]. 8vo., (2) + 36pp., some minor staining of title-page, recent marbled boards lettered on spine. A good copy. Only edition: rare. OCLC, ESTC & COPAC find copies at only BL + Columbia + Melbourne (Baillieu Lib.) + Bayerische Staatsbibliothek. But see also Goldsmiths 13209 for a related report. Virtually the whole of the British ex-pat population were in a state of high dudgeon about Pitt's India Act> of 1784. Their complaints turned particularly on their change of status vis-à-vis the new system of criminal jurisdiction. Meetings of British residents had already taken place in Calcutta in July, and in Cawnpore as early as March. Both meetings had resulted in strong complaints being forwarded to London. The Fort St. George meeting in September underlined the uncompromising mood. In a letter to the King, the residents regretfully complained that: 'We observe, with inexpressable concern, that the Act of Parliament, passed in the 24th year of your Majesty's reign, and entitled, An Act for the better regulation and management of the affairs of the East-India Company, and for establishing a Court of Judicature for the more speedy and effectual trial of persons accused of offences committed in the East Indies>, is liable to an interpretation extremely adverse to that freedom and protection which are equally claimed by every subject in your Majesty's dominions. The privilege of trial by jury is there taken away from us, and our persons and property endangered without even the formation of a charge, or any alledged cause of suspicion against us'.

Letters of Albanicus to the people of England, on the partiality and injustice of the charges brought against Warren Hastings, Esq., late Governor General of Bengal.

London: Pr. for J. Debrett, 8vo (19.5 cm; 7.5"). [1] f., vii, [1 (blank)], 97, [1 (blank)] pp.. 1786 The Earl of Buchan (1742–1829) writes convincingly in defense of Warren Hastings (1732–1818), the former governor of Bengal, against charges levelled against him by Burke. Buchan was impeached on several charges, others were added in later months, and the trial dragged on from 1787 to 1795, when he was ultimately found not guilty of all charges. What a nightmare! Attributed to the Earl of Buchan by Halkett & Laing (vol. 9 [1962 ed.]). Recent full brown speckled calf, covers gilt-tooled in the Cambridge style. Raised bands on spine accented with gilt beading on bands and defined by gilt rules above and below each band. Title-page printed aslant or trimmed somewhat askew, and with a few small old inkspots; pamphlet otherwise clean, with occasional light instances of foxing.
