Mémoires d'Anne de Gonzagues Princesse Palatine.

s.n.,, A Londres, (et se trouve a Paris, 1786 - Cm. 19,5, pp. (4) xv (1) 267 (1). Solida legatura coeva in piena pelle, dorso a nervi con titoli e ricchi fregi in oro. Tagli colorati e sguardie marmorizzate. His primary focus was devoted to the study of spiders which resulted in a publication of over 3,000 images entitled, Monograph of Spinner and Die Arachnidan, completed only after his death in 1857.He was also quite fascinated with ornithological studies which resulted in the collaboration of the publication of a two volume work with Johann Wolf, Abbildungen Und Beschreibengen Merkwurdiger naturgeschichtlicher Gegenstande (translated as The Natural History of Unusual Birds and other Animals with Illustations and Desciptions) published in Nuremberg from 1816-1822. These extraordinary original watercolors of a blue bird and parrot were two of only a few of Hahn?s studies used in this publication. The detail and accuracy of this painting are lovely. Hahn was concerned not only with the scientific accuracy of the Ibis, but also capturing the individuality and characteristic traits of its personality.

        Eusebio

The Rich Man Being Led To Hell

John Boydell, 1786. Proof before letters. Mezzotint. Not in Wessely.. 20 1/8 x 28 1/2". The painting by Teniers the Younger had been acquired by Sir Robert Peel in 1784 and brought to England. It is now in the National Gallery, London. The composition illustrates, in a very imaginative way, a parable related in the Gospel of Luke: a rich man, dying, sees a beggar named Lazarus ascending to Heaven as he is dragged toward Hell. In this image, we don't see Lazarus, but there is a very memorable representation of the rich man, which is far from unsympathetic. David Teniers the Younger (1610-1690) was the last of the great Flemish masters. The son of a painter, he was married to Pieter Bruegel's granddaughter, and clearly was influenced by the great Flemish master. Like Bruegel, his work was enriched by the study of demonic creatures in Hieronymous Bosch (d. 1516). The original painting is in the National Gallery, London. Interestingly, Teniers did a mate to this painting which shows Mad Meg (a Flemish folk figure) marching out of Hell with a sword in one hand and a basket of loot in the other, a striking and humorous contrast to the poor "rich" man. Richard Earlom (1743 - 1822) was one of the best mezzotint engravers in England. His reputation rests primarily on the renditions of Old Master paintings, like this one, that he did for the Boydells. His mastery of tone and light has never been exceeded and is beautifully exemplified in this proof pull. Earlom has altered Teniers original, adding Cerberus on the left (mixing mythologies in effect) and intensifying the demonic hilarity.

Jacquin was one of the first to follow the Linnaean binominal system. Most plates depict flowering plants, lichens and marine algae, some also (or predominantly) show insects. Three plates contain snakes (Reptilia), which is found in the section "Amphibiologica" by Nicolai Host (part IV). Part V ends with a general index.         Manuscript memorandum to Lord Sydney

Burton Pynsent, Somerset,: 5 October, 1786.. Manuscript note in ink on paper, 102 x 182 mm; in good condition; evidently once mounted in an album. A short memorandum written by the Prime Minister from his private country house to Lord Sydney as Home Secretary. Pitt is returning the 'dispatches to Gibraltar and Algiers which he received by the Post this evening, and has marked some words in the letter... which if Lord Sydney approve of it, he thinks might as well be omitted...'. Pitt's legible hand is difficult to decipher only in his identification of the recipient of the draft letter to which he refers, which may read 'letter to Bey', the title by which the ruler of Algiers was still known at the time. This slight document has an appeal in making the connection between these two men just six weeks after Pitt's government had made the formal decision to send convicts to Botany Bay, to a place that would shortly be named for his Home Secretary.

        The Fortune Teller

London: Published by J. R. Smith, No. 83 Oxford Street, May 22, 1786. Coloured mezzotint. In good condition with the exception of some faint soiling in upper margin. Bottom margin outside platemark is coated with white paint. Water stains on verso of sheet, not noticeable on front of sheet. Image size: 14 3/4 x 17 inches. Plate size: 17 7/8 x 19 5/8 inches. Sheet size: 19 5/8 x 20 inches. A wonderful mezzotint after Rev. Matthew William Peters, by one of the finest eighteenth century engravers. This charming print is engraved after a painting by Rev. Matthew William Peters, and is a fascinating example of this period in British printmaking. Matthew Peters was trained in London under the portraitist Thomas Hudson. He quickly became a prominent member of the Society of Artists, exhibiting portraits in oil and pastel, and attracting a number of prominent aristocratic patrons, including the Duke of Manchester, the Marquess of Granby, and Lord Grosvenor, for whom he painted some of his most controversial pictures. Urged by his patrons, Peters painted a series of quasi-erotic character studies of courtesans, which at that time were quite unusual in Britain. These controversial pictures were eagerly reproduced by industrious printmaker/publishers such as Smith, and caused a flurry of curious customers to hurry to London print-shops. Following his ordination in 1781, Peters quickly denounced his early erotic pictures as immoral. Upon being appointed Honorary Chaplain to the Royal Academy, Peters expressed a profound regret "that he ever devoted his talents to such subjects". With this in mind, this picture becomes extremely interesting. In this work, Peters continues to observe and appreciate charming subjects in fancy costumes, but eliminates the erotic overtones present in his earlier works. Instead he has chosen to depict an age-old moral subject, fortune-telling, an institution in western art since the Renaissance. This print, which is expertly engraved by one of the finest eighteenth century printmakers, is a fascinating view into a turbulent period in Peters' life, when he struggled to produce images that would appeal to his viewers while remaining true to his moral beliefs. Contemporary uniform calf, spines with yellow gilt lettered label (one volume with skilful repair at head of spine, some slight wear to bindings). A fine copy of this great classic on the botany of the West Indies and Central America, together with the 3 supplementary volumes which are of the greatest rarity. In 1763 Jacquin's "Selectarum Stirpium Americanarum Historia", was published of which only 3 coloured copies exist. 17 years later a larger edition appeared with original watercolours of which only 18 copies were printed. In order to make this important publication available to a larger public Zorn published the present 8vo edition with handcoloured plates on a reduced format.         The history of ancient Greece, its colonies, and conquests; from the earliest accounts till the division of the Macedonian Empire in the east. Including the History of Literature, Philosophy, and the Fine Arts. In two volumes

London: printed for A. Strahan; and T. Cadell, in the Strand , MDCCLXXXVI [1786]. First Edition. Full Calf. Near Fine. First Edition. 4to in 2 volumes: xvi, 684; viii, 718, [29], [1]pp, with 2 folding maps, "The Western Division of the Grecian Colonies and Conquests" and "The Eastern Division of the Grecian Colonies and Conquests." Uniformly bound in period full tree calf, the spines divided into six compartments with gilt tooling and red and olive-green morocco lettering pieces, and with French blue silk page markers and marbled end papers. An excellent wide-margined set, the bindings tight and secure (though the boards of vol. 2 a bit bowed), pages fresh and bright, the engraved maps in rich impressions properly folded. Provenance: Julio Berzunza, with his bookplate to the front paste downs. Beginning in the 1920s, Berzunza amassed a comprehensive collection of Alexandriana, totaling nearly 1000 books, manuscripts, maps, engravings and artifacts, the basis for his landmark work, "A tentative classification of books, pamphlets, and pictures concerning Alexander the Great and the Alexander romances, from the collection of Julio Berzunza." ESTC Citation No. T99924. & Gillies constructed his briefly popular narrative of classical Greek history from ancient literary sources, both histories and other genres. But the "revolution in ancient history brought about by source analysis, epigraphy, and archaeology, together with changes in literary taste, brought total oblivion to both books and their author."         L'AN DEUX MILLE QUATRE CENT QUARANTE. REVE S'IL EN FUT JAMAIS; SUIVI DE L'HOMME DE FER, SONGE

[N.p. (Paris)]. 1786.. xvi,380,[2];381,[2];312,[2]pp. Contemporary calf and boards, spines gilt extra. Engraved frontis to each volume. Minimal occasional foxing, several joints cracking (but sound, except for 3rd volume, where the cords are intact but joints loose). Internally a quite nice, large copy, with the half titles. The important greatly revised and enlarged edition of the work several commentators consider the first genuine Utopian work set in the future. The first edition appeared in Amsterdam, under a false imprint, in 1771 (though some bibliographers cite 1770, based on the erroneous date listed in the preface to this edition). Mercier's protagonist awakens from sleep in the 25th century, and finds himself in "that blissful period, when man shall have regained his courage, his liberty, his independence and his virtue." The new society is the consequence of a revolution overseen by a benevolent prince, and while it is primarily an agrarian society, considerable emphasis is placed on scientific knowledge. The influence of Locke, Rousseau, Voltaire and other progressive thinkers of the time is evident, as well as certain dystopic elements, including the burning of texts which did not enjoy the approval of the powers that be. The novel was widely translated, and an American edition appeared in short order. NEGLEY 772. PENN STATE UTOPIAN CATALOGUE, pp.120-2.

        Untitled Decorative Plate] [Pl. 9]

      - [London]: 1786. Hand-coloured engraving by Edwards. Very good condition apart from slight discolouration of the paper along the edge of the bottom margin. Penned signature reading "Anne Lloyd" visible in top margin. 13 1/8 x 9 3/4 inches. 21 1/4 x 15 1/8 inches. A beautifully designed image from Edwards "A Collection of Flowers drawn after Nature.", a superb and rare work. Edwards lived in London until about 1778 when he moved to Surrey, exhibiting at the Society of Artists, of which he was a member, and at the Royal Academy. In addition to the fine arts, he also provided designs for textiles, particularly cotton calico. Between 1769 and 1770 he published Edwards British Herbal in monthly parts, with text garnered from the works of contemporary botanists and 100 fine hand-coloured engraved plates from his own designs. The plates show that his interests lay not so much in the accurate depiction of botanical specimens as the design possibilities of beautiful flowers. The present work, his masterpiece, was his next publishing venture. Working from the imprint dates of the plates it is clear that he began to publish designs for the work in 1783, with plates being completed periodically throughout the 1780s and well into the following decade. Unlike his previous work, all the plates are designed, etched and coloured by Edwards himself, a process which gave him complete control over the publication. Cf. Dunthorne 105; cf. Priced to allow for rebinding. Garrison Morton 2466. Dictionary of Scientific Biography: "It was during Muller's years as a tutor to Sigismund Schulin, the son of an influential noble family, that 'his pupil's mother interested him in the flora and fauna of the estate, procuring microscopes and other equipment for his growing absorption in biological studies. The mainsprings of his scientific research were his love of beauty and his discovery that previous systematists had largely neglected to take microorganisms into account. Even the smallest puddle was full of organisms, and his unique powers of observation enabled Muller to demonstrate their adaptations. Thus he stands out as the foremost representative of the Linnean period in Danish natural history. He established the classification of several groups of animals - including Hydrachnellae, Entomostraca and Infusoria - completely disregarded by Linnaeus. He pursued his zoological studies and became one of the first field naturalists, using surprisingly modern methods long before the development of experimental biology."

Analyse Chimique et Concordance Des Trois Regnes

Paris: L'Imprimeries Royale, 1786. Hard Cover. Very Good. A contemporary of Lavoisier and Brisson, "the verdict on Sage as a chemist is almost universally negative...If LaVoisier often cited Sage, it was not infrequently to correct his manifest errors." Most of his contemporaries viewed Sage as a successful teacher, "esteemed by his students". In Analyse Chimique Sage "set forth the doctrine that formed the basis of his teaching." (-DSB) "In spite of certain defects of scientific character...he must get credit for much excellent work. He made chemistry, hitherto neglected, not only popular but of importance for industry; he improved the art of extracting metals from their ores, and he was the first person to introduce to France systematic assaying and analysis. To him is also due the foundation of the Ecole des Mines and the Museum of Mineralogy." (Ferguson) Not in Neville. The present set is bound in leather with red spine labels. Quarto. With the printed presentation leaf to Richard Bishop of Worcester, before the title-page. Verso of title-page with two old rubberstamps of St. Andrews University, one for deaccession. A very good copy. David Dalrymple, third baronet, Lord Hailes (1726-1792) was a Scottish advocate, judge, and historian. His best known work was his Annals of Scotland (1776-9). In the present work, he attacked Gibbon over his account of the effect of Christianity on the decline of the Roman empire. Controversial when it was published, it was a minor blow in the ongoing controversy between theological traditionalists such as Hailes and more liberal thinkers, led by David Hume.

INQUIRY INTO THE NATURE AND CAUSES OF THE WEALTH OF NATIONS

London: for A. Strahan and T. Cadell, 1786. 3 volumes. An especially early printing, the fourth, only the second of the octavo editions, the last edition with any changes, includes a new preface never before printed, issued only 10 years after the first 2 vol. quarto edition. 8vo, beautiful three-quarter polished calf in fine antique style over marbled paper covered boards, red morocco lettering labels gilt, the spine in compartments separated by gilt bands, gilt central devices in the compartments. viii, 499 + errata; vi, 518, [5] Appendix + errata; v + errata, 465, (47) index + (1) ad pp. A remarkably fine and handsome set, the text blocks completely untrimmed and with the original deckled edges as issued from the printer. Bindings in excellent condition. A BEAUTIFUL SET OF THIS EXTRAORDINARY WORK. Smith's classic work was begun at Toulouse in 1763-64 where he had travelled as guardian of Henry Scott, the young duke of Buccleuch, and in the company of David Hume, historian and fellow professor at Glasgow University. The work took shape over the next ten years and was finally published in 1776. At one point during its composition, Hume wrote that Smith was "cutting himself off entirely from human society." But his labors, however severe his methods, yielded the "first and greatest classic of modern economic thought" (Printing and the Mind of Man). "[I]t may be said that the WEALTH OF NATIONS certainly operated powerfully through the harmony of its critical side with the tendencies of the half-century which followed its publication to the assertion of personal freedom and 'natural rights.' It discredited the economic policy of the past, and promoted the overthrow of institutions which had come down from earlier times, but were unsuited to modern society. As a theoretic treatment of social economy, and therefore as a guide to social reconstruction and practice in the future, it is provisional, not definitive. But when the study of its subject comes to be systematized on the basis of a general social philosophy more complete and durable than Smith's, no contribution to that final construction will be found so valuable as his" (Britannica). The fourth edition contains a special ‘advertisement’, first appearing here, in which Smith declares that he is now ‘at liberty to acknowledge my very great obligations to Mr. Henry Hop of Amsterdam. To that gentleman I owe the most distinct, as well as liberal information, concerning a very interesting and important subject, the Bank of Amsterdam’. Eighteenth century editions of Smith’s magnum opus are now becoming very scarce.

The author tells us in his Preface that the second edition is a very different work from the first, there are large additions and it has been much revised and corrected. Fourcroy (1755-1809) was born in Paris and studied medicine, graduating in 1780. Instead of practising he immediately turned his attention to the study of science and in particular chemistry. With the help of Buffon in 1784 he succeeded Macquer to the chair of Chemistry in the Jardin des Plantes and became a pioneer in the field of organic chemistry. He worked with Lavoisier on the new nomenclature for chemistry. He was a Deputy at the National Convention, and became one of the leading members of the Committee of Public Instruction. He assisted in organising the Ecole Polytechnique and in founding schools of medicine and was created director general of Public Instruction. His researches covered the whole field of chemistry but his most important investigations referred to animal substances, the study of which had never been so systematically undertaken previously. His teaching and researches resulted in the publication of several important works, this being his first. Ferguson, Bibliotheca Chemica, page 287-88; Duveen, Bibliotheca Alchemica et Chemica, page 225; Wellcome, III, 47 listing first and third editions. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING.
