Explanatory note to the frontispiece following the introduction. Moderate foxing and mild dampstaining to the title page and introduction, with minor to moderate foxing throughout. 1/2-inch chip from fore margin to one leaf, effecting the first word of one line on page 160. Otherwise, a handsome copy of this scarce and fascinating title. Reference: ESTC No. T107420, which shows only two copies in North America, at the Library Company of Philadelphia and University of Virginia. ABPC shows no copies at auction over the past quarter-century. ~FFF~ C. Heydon is apparently a pseudonym based on Sir Christopher Heydon (1561-1623), an English soldier, Member of Parliament, and writer on astrology. The use of the pseudonym is indicative of the place of astrology in 18th century publishing as somewhat disreputable. In the January 1787 English Review, a brief article about a 1786 astrology book by one Robert Turner noted that 'Mr. Turner recommends the new astrology of Mr. Heydon; do they vend the celestial influences in company, or is Heydon, as we suspect, only an alias for Turner?'         A voyage to the Cape of Good Hope, towards the Antarctic polar circle, and round the world, but chiefly into the country of the Hottentots and Caffres from the year 1772, to 1776. Translated from the Swedish original. 2nd edition corrected.

London, G.G.J. and J. Robinson, 1786.2 volumes. 4to. Contemporary calf, rebacked with red morocco title-label to spines. With engraved frontispiece depicting the Cape of Good Hope (blank margins rep.), large folding engraved map of the Cape of Good Hope and 9 engraved plates (4 folding). XXVIII,368; VIII,356,(1) pp.* First Swedish edition was published in Stockholm in 1783: Resa till Goda Hopps-Udden; first edition in English was published in London in 1785. - Sparrman (1748-1820), a Swedish naturalist, went to South Africa with the Swedish East India Company. He made several excursions into the country in search of natural history specimens. It is described by Mr. Theal as the 'most trustworthy account of the Cape Colony and the various races of people then residing in it' that had been published in the eightheenth century. In 1772, J.R. Forster, engaged him to accompany Captain Cook on his second voyage as assistant naturalist. His account includes mention of a hairbreath escape from collision of Cook's two ships, the Adventure and the Resolution, not recorded elsewhere. Sparrman left the Resolution when it returned to Cape Town in March 1775. He resumed his naturalist studies in South Africa and also undertook ethnological research among the region's native Hottentot people. In 1778, Sparrman was back in Sweden, where he had been appointed president of the natural history collection of Stockholm's Academy of Sciences. Sparrman's account of Cook's voyage of 1772-75 helped popularize the newly devised Linnaen system of classification and nomenclature by applying it to the new varieties of plants and animals he had collected. It also includes some of the earliest ethnological studies of the native peoples of South Africa. - (Some staining). Mendelssohn II p.414-15; SAB IV, p.362; Beddie 1277; Du Rietz, Kroepelien, 1222: apparently the best of the editions of the English version.

Dictionnaire de l'Academie francoiseIn two Volumes

France - Pierre Beaume Nismes, 1786. France - Pierre Beaume Nismes, 1786 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. This wonderfully informative scarce set of french dictionaries are divided into two volumes. Volume one focuses onwords beginning with A to K. Which then allows volume two to define words beginning with L to Z. Supervised by the Academie francaise, often called simply l'Academie, who arean organisation which moderates the French language. The primary role of the Academie francaise is to regulate the French language by determining standards of acceptable grammar and vocabulary, as well as adapting to linguistic change by adding new words and updating the meanings of existing ones. Due to the status of English in the world, the Academie's task tends to be focused on lessening the influx of English terms into French, by choosing or inventing French equivalents. Originally this set ofdictionaries were not sold to the general public, so the Academie's workwas incorporated into society by the creation of laws and regulations. Some banners and initials illustrated in black throughout. Complete in two volumes. Condition: In original calf bindings. Externally, both heavily worn with back board of first volumeand front board of second volume, detached but present. All hinges are week and may detach in the post. Internally, generally firmly bound but strained in places, pages are bright withsome scattered spotting. Copperplate ink signature to front endpaper in volume one. Overall: FAIR with a very good interior.

A Voyage to the Cape of Good Hope, towards the Antarctic Polar Circle, and Round the World: but chiefly into the Country of the Hottentots and Caffres, from the year 1772 to 1776

London: Printed for G G J and J Robinson, 1786.. London:: Printed for G G J and J Robinson,. 1786.. Second edition and most complete. Hardcover. Very good condition. This copy has an interesting American association with the original presentation being signed from John Gibson to Alex Henderson. The pair noted plantation owners in what is now West Virginia at the time of publication. Other later owners include George Washington Henderson, (grandson of Alexander), who settled in Fairfax, Va., and was friend, neighbor and pew mate of George Washington. Indeed, it was Washington himself, a former surveyor, who encouraged the Henderson family in the late 18th century to invest in land in what was then sparsely populated western Virginia. Other owner signatures include M.P. Beeson, Wood County W.Va. Aug 1879 and Virginia Henderson Thomas 1936. & & Anders Sparrman was a Swedish naturalist, abolitionist and an apostle of Carl Linnaeus. Sparrman was the son of a clergyman. At the age of nine he enrolled at Uppsala University, beginning medical studies at fourteen and becoming one of the outstanding pupils of Linnaeus. In 1765 he went on a voyage to China as ship's doctor, returning two years later and describing the animals and plants he had encountered. On this voyage he met Carl Gustaf Ekeberg. He sailed for the Cape of Good Hope in January 1772 to take up a post as a tutor. Sparrman, traveled to the Cape in early 1772 on a botanical expedition sponsored by the Swedish government and made several excursions into the country in search of natural history specimens. When James Cook arrived there later in the year at the start of his second voyage, Sparrman was taken on as assistant naturalist to Johann and Georg Forster. For the next three years he served with Cook and although in his "Voyage" he devotes only 24 pages to the Cook expedition, he does include an account of a narrow escape from collision of Cook’s two ships, the Adventure and the Resolution, not recorded elsewhere. After the voyage he returned to Cape Town in July 1775 and practiced medicine, earning enough to finance a journey into the interior. (Cox). Sparrman’s account of his explorations into Africa is important for its natural history and anthropological observations of Southern Africa and is, according to Theal, "the most trustworthy account of the Cape Colony and the various races of people then residing in it, that has been published in the 18th century" (Mendelssohn II, 414-15), (Withey, 201).         A Voyage to the Cape of Good Hope, towards the Antarctic Polar Circle, and Round the World: but chiefly into the Country of the Hottentots and Caffres, from the year 1772 to 1776.

Printed for G G J and J Robinson,, London: 1786 - This copy has an interesting American association with the original presentation being signed from John Gibson to Alex Henderson. Anders Sparrman was a Swedish naturalist, abolitionist and an apostle of Carl Linnaeus. First issued in Swedish in 1783; the English translation first appeared in London earlier in 1785. Cox I, 386; Holmes, Captain James Cook: A Bibliographical Excursion, 54; Spence 1147; Rosove 316.C1 (citing it as "scarce"); Beddie 1277, Conrad p. 14; Chavanne 5731.
