14 engraved plates (of which six are folding & four are on two sheets). 2 p.l., 136 pp. Large 4to, attractive antique calf-backed paste-paper boards, spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Leipzig: J.G.I. Breitkopf, 1784. First edition which deals extensively with the history of paper; seven of the plates illustrate papermaking, both Oriental and Western. "There are several plates of interest, including the interior of a Japanese paper mill, and the implements of a Hindustani paper manufactory; also engravings of old stamping machines and reproductions of numerous watermarks."-Hunter, Papermaking through Eighteen Centuries, p. 96. A fine copy. A sequel, which discusses entirely different topics, appeared in 1801 and is not present here for obvious reasons. ❧ Bigmore & Wyman, I, p. 81-"A learned and practical treatise on the origin of playing-cards, the introduction of paper made from linen into the various countries of Europe, and the invention of wood-engraving, with many citations of authorities for the statements made. The plates are very curious." Hunter, The Literature of Papermaking 1390-1800, p. 41.

Naples, Nella Stamperia Raimondiana, 1778. (bound with:) IDEM. (bound with:) IDEM.

Three works in one volume, 4to (233x181 mm); contemporary stiff vellum, spine with gilt title on morocco label (small repair to upper spine); author's engraved portrait as a frontispiece (G. Aloja inc.), (20), 62 pp. (lacking the last blank leaf) and a large folding plate (230x400 mm) engraved by G. Aloja after G. Giannini; (8), 47, (1 blank) pp.; XVI, 42, (2 blank) pp. Title-pages within a woodcut border with at the center the printer's device, expect in the title-page of work 3 which has an engraved vignette instead. The author's portrait was also issued with Del Cibo Pitagorico and the Moltiplico when the two works were sold separately, but in this copy the portrait was bound only once at the opening of the volume. Some browning and foxing throughout due to the quality of the paper, tear repaired to the folding plate, otherwise a very good, genuine copy in its original Neapolitan binding.FIRST EDITION of all three works.I) Il Credenziere is the most important Corrado's publication on pastry and perfumes. After the dedication and the preface, which outlines a short history of cooking and explains the subjects and reasons of the work, it comprises eight Trattati dedicated to: sugar, soups, sorbetti, cakes, jams, granite, candied fruits, fruit and flower marmalades, spirits, liqueurs, vinegars, perfumes, toilet waters and desserts (one for each month of the year).II) Very interesting treatise, dedicated to John Child, Count of Tylney, on vegetarian cuisine. The author recalls Pythagoras and believes that a vegetarian diet is healthier and more suited to the true human nature. However, since the pleasure of the table must not be lost, Corrado teaches how to prepare tasty herbs, roots and flowers that otherwise would not be easy to enjoy.III) The booklet opens with an ironic dedication to the 'Shadow of Apicius', who had appeared in front of the author, on several occasions, to show his approval of Corrado's work. Then it follows a sonnet on the author's portrait by Domenico Maria Pinto, a canon of the cathedral of Oria, Corrado's hometown. The sonnet is accompanied by a commentary which contains references to Corrado's life and writings. The book mainly deals with the breeding and upbringing of the following farm animals: chickens, pigeons, peacocks, ducks, gooses, pheasants, cattle, sheep, pigs, rabbits, and bees.As the anonymous "Confetturiere piemontese" (Turin, 1790), Corrado adopts many technical words from the French gastronomic lexicon but remains faithful to the traditional Italian cuisine, trying to assimilate the foreign recipes into the local culinary tradition (cf. E. Faccioli, ed., Arte della cucina, Milan, 1966, II, pp. 273-290).Corrado also published a general treatise on cooking called Il cuoco galante (Naples, 1778), as well as books on citrus fruits, herbs and flowers (Fisiologia degli agrumi, dell'erbe aromatiche e de' fiori, Naples, 1787), silkworms (Norma di educazione e governo per bachi da seta, Naples, 1789), local products from the Kingdom of Naples (Notiziario delle produzioni particolari del Regno di Napoli, Naples, 1792), chocolate and coffee (La manovra della cioccolata e del caffè, Naples, 1794), potatoes (Trattato delle patate per uso di cibo e lettera, Naples, 1798), agricolture and sheep-farming (Scuola di generale agricoltura, e pastorizia adattata alle varie provincie del Regno di Napoli, Naples, 1804), recipes for banquets (I pranzi giornalieri variati, ed imbanditi, Naples, 1809), and education (Norma di educazione fisica, morale, e scientifica per la nobile gioventù, Naples, 1814). All Corrado's books were very successful, but Il cuoco galante and Il Credenziere di buon gusto, in particular, enjoyed a wide circulation and were reprinted several times until nowadays.V.         Musical and Poetical Relicks of the Welsh Bards.

Author, London 1784 - London: Author, 1784 In blue quarter 19c calf with contemporary marbled boards, corners and edges bumped and worn, title in gilt to red leather label with gilt tooling to upper cover. (Libri Walliae 2860/p354. ESTC T115800). Jones, harpist and music antiquary, seems to have had close connections with other scholars and antiquaries, and it is probable that he worked on the research for Relicks with John Walters, sub-librarian of the Bodleian Library in Oxford and son of John Walters the lexicographer. Jones also worked with Edward Williams (Iolo Morganwg), and some of the material for the revised 1794 edition of Relicks seems to have come from Williams. See ODNB. Full Title: Musical and Poetical Relicks of the Welsh Bards: Preserved By Tradition, and Authentic Manuscripts, from Remote Antiquity, Never Before Published. To the tunes are added variations for the Harp, harpsicord, violin or flute. With a choice of collections of the pennillion, epigrammatic tanzas, or, native pastoral sonets of Wales with English translations.         An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations.

London: for W. Strahan; and T. Cadell,, 1784. The third edition, with additions, in three volumes. 3 volumes, octavo (215 x 130 mm). Recent full brown calf, red morocco labels to spine, raised bands, compartments ruled in gilt with volume numbers lettered in gilt, boards double-ruled in blind with small floriate corner pieces. Occasional pencil annotations to the text. A few marks to edges of text block, contents lightly browned and some faint spotting to volume 3 in particular, otherwise a very good copy. First octavo edition, third overall, of the "first and greatest classic of modern economic thought" (PMM). This edition contains several additions including a new chapter titled "The Conclusion of the Mercantile System". Adam Smith's masterpiece, first published in 1776, is the foundation of modern economic thought and remains the single most important account of the rise of, and the principles behind, modern capitalism. "The Wealth of Nations had no rival in scope or depth when published and is still one of the few works in its field to have achieved classic status, meaning simply that it has sustained yet survived repeated reading, critical and adulatory, long after the circumstances which prompted it have become the object of historical enquiry" (ODNB).

Stockdale's Edition of Shakespeare: Including, in One Volume, The Whole of His Dramatic Works; with Explanatory Notes

London: John Stockdale, 1784. First single-volume octavo edition of Shakespeare's plays, lightly footnoted, designed to appeal to "the middling and lower ranks of the inhabitants of this country," who had been priced out of previous editions, as well as to those readers looking for a light alternative to their library sets: "The book now offered to the public may commodiously be taken into a coach or a post-chaise, for amusement in a journey. Or if a company of gentlemen should happen, in conversation, to mention Shakespeare, or to dispute concerning any particular passage, a volume containing the whole of his plays may, with great convenience, be fetched by a servant out of a library or a closet." Stockdale includes all thirty-six plays represented in the 1623 First Folio, with the text "as it has been settled by the most approved commentators." A bright and attractive example of a popular milestone in Shakespeare printing. Thick octavo, full contemporary red morocco ruled in gilt, spine ruled and lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers, gilt-ruled dentelles, all edges gilt. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Shakespeare, and preliminaries including Rowe's life of Shakespeare and Shakespeare's will. Text printed in two columns. One page of publisher's advertisements at rear. Two bookplates to front pastedown, early ink inscription to preliminary blank: "Francis Love Beckford / 1789 / Given in May 1816 by M.B. / to John L. Beckford." Lightest shelfwear, offsetting from portrait, occasional light foxing.

Ulrich. - Die reformierte Herborner Bibel des Johann Piscator: Geschichte u. Wirkung. Herborn. 2001. Mentelle, [=headline].

1784 - (Paris), P. G. Simon & N. H. Nyon, (1784). 8:o. 15 pp. Sewn in contemporary glazed bluish-green wrappers, somewhat worn, with insignificant paper losses. A nice copy printed on thick paper.A catalogue of maps, atlases and teaching aids for sale from Edme Mentelle. The introductory text presents the teaching aids and describes how they should be used in the teaching. The later part describes the terms of sale for Mentelle's "Atlas nouveau". Edme Mentelle (1730-1815) was a French cartographer and taught at the French court during the 1780s and was at the time "historiographe de monseigneur comte d'Artois", the future Charles X. Mentelle made, among other things, the drawings for a famous and for its time very advanced globe, which was made for Louis XVI's son Louis Joseph and has been preserved to this day. Despite the fact that his importance as a cartographer has been put in to question - he barely left Paris during his lifetime and has been called "the most sedentary of armchair geographers" - he made a great impact through his teachings and his textbooks. "Mentelle became, in effect, the official geographer of the Republic during the latter phase of the National convention and through the Directory, from late 1794 to 1799" according to Michael Heffernan's article "Edme Mentelle's geographies and the french revolution" in "Geography and Revolution" (2005).

Vienna, apud Rudolphum Graeffer, 1784, 8, 428, (12) pp., gestochene Titelvignette, Portrait, marmorierter Kalbsledereinband der Zeit mit Buntpapiervorsätzen und reichlicher Rückenvergoldung blasser St.a.Tit. Second Edition (first 1783) of what Simon considers: "An unusually interesting book of dietetics and cookery, describing the qualities of every possible kind of food and drink, plants, fungi, animals, fats and oils, condiments, wines and spirits, tea, coffee ... etc." The text is in Latin, but the German nomenclature is included. Plenck is probably best remembered for his system of dermatological calssification (explained in his Doctrina de morbis cutaneis of 1776), but his talents were extensive, as can be witnessed in this less well-known work. The portrait is of Giovanni Alessandro Brambilla, to whom the work is dedicated. This work was obviously also found unusually interesting when it was published, the second edition appearing just a year after the first and apparently being a direct reprint of the first with just the date changed - in effect a second issue, rather than a true second edition. Josephs Akademie in Wien. Simon, Gastronomica 1204 Blake p. 355 Wellcome IV, p.402 (imperfect, portrait wanting) NUC records three locations.

1784 John Bunyan Pilgrims Progress Illustrated Demons Allegory Calvinism Puritan

Glasgow : Printed and sold by J. & M. Robertson, 1784. New edition. - 1784 John Bunyan Pilgrims Progress Illustrated Demons Allegory Calvinism Puritan “What God says is best, is best, though all the men in the world are against it.” John Bunyan, The Pilgrims Progress John Bunyan’s “The Pilgrim’s Progress” is one of the most important theological works ever written. Thought to be first printed in 1678, Bunyan began writing this story while in prison for his violations of the Conventicle Act, which prevent holding religious services outside the establishment of the Church of England. It is known that while Bunyan was in prison, his only companions were the Bible and Foxe’s “Book of Martyrs” – thus, the two literary giants in his jail cell certainly influenced the writing of “Pilgrim’s Progress.” A Quaker, by the name of Granger, visited Bunyan in prison and says of him: “Bunyan, who had been mentioned among the least and lowest of our writers, and even ridiculed as a driveller by those who had never read him, deserves a much higher rank than is commonly imagined. His ‘Pilgrim’s Progress’ gives us a clear and distinct idea of Calvinistic divinity.” This 1784 edition includes 22 woodcut engravings throughout. Allibone calls this book, “the best-known uninspired allegory which has been composed by the wit of man” Item number: #1082 Price: $550 BUNYAN, John The pilgrim's progress : from this world to that which is to come, delivered under the similitude of a dream, in three parts : wherein is set forth the manner of his setting out, the several dangers and difficulties he met with in his journey, and the many victories he obtained over the world, the flesh, and the devil, together with his happy arrival at the celestial city Glasgow : Printed and sold by J. & M. In den 14 Jahren, die er in Brugg seinen Wirkungskreis hatte, fällt auch der Beginn seiner schriftstellerischen Tätigkeit. (Namenreg., Druckfehl., Verbess.); XVIII (Tit., Inh.), 518 S., 4 Bll. (Namenreg., Verbess.); XXXII S.         Gallerie edler Deutscher Frauenzimmer. Mit getroffenen Schattenrissen.

Buchhandlung der Gelehrten,, Dessau und Leipzig. 1784 - Bd. I, Heft 2. Mit 5 kol. gestoch. Schattenrissen. Kl.-8°. 384 S. Wohl erste Ausgabe. - Hayn-Got. VII, 126 (Rar); Allgemeine Lit. Zeitung Bd. 1-2; Kayser 327. In diesem 2. Schlichter Pappbd. d. Zt., angeschmutzt u. abgegriffen, Vorsätze mit zarten Kritzeleien. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
