Ulrich. - Die reformierte Herborner Bibel des Johann Piscator: Geschichte u. Wirkung. Herborn. 2001.

Mentelle, [=headline].

1784 - (Paris), P. G. Simon & N. H. Nyon, (1784). 8:o. 15 pp. Sewn in contemporary glazed bluish-green wrappers, somewhat worn, with insignificant paper losses. A nice copy printed on thick paper.A catalogue of maps, atlases and teaching aids for sale from Edme Mentelle. The introductory text presents the teaching aids and describes how they should be used in the teaching. The later part describes the terms of sale for Mentelle's "Atlas nouveau". Edme Mentelle (1730-1815) was a French cartographer and taught at the French court during the 1780s and was at the time "historiographe de monseigneur comte d'Artois", the future Charles X. Mentelle made, among other things, the drawings for a famous and for its time very advanced globe, which was made for Louis XVI's son Louis Joseph and has been preserved to this day. Despite the fact that his importance as a cartographer has been put in to question - he barely left Paris during his lifetime and has been called "the most sedentary of armchair geographers" - he made a great impact through his teachings and his textbooks. "Mentelle became, in effect, the official geographer of the Republic during the latter phase of the National convention and through the Directory, from late 1794 to 1799" according to Michael Heffernan's article "Edme Mentelle's geographies and the french revolution" in "Geography and Revolution" (2005).

Vienna, apud Rudolphum Graeffer, 1784, 8, 428, (12) pp., gestochene Titelvignette, Portrait, marmorierter Kalbsledereinband der Zeit mit Buntpapiervorsätzen und reichlicher Rückenvergoldung blasser St.a.Tit. Second Edition (first 1783) of what Simon considers: "An unusually interesting book of dietetics and cookery, describing the qualities of every possible kind of food and drink, plants, fungi, animals, fats and oils, condiments, wines and spirits, tea, coffee ... etc." The text is in Latin, but the German nomenclature is included. Plenck is probably best remembered for his system of dermatological calssification (explained in his Doctrina de morbis cutaneis of 1776), but his talents were extensive, as can be witnessed in this less well-known work. The portrait is of Giovanni Alessandro Brambilla, to whom the work is dedicated. This work was obviously also found unusually interesting when it was published, the second edition appearing just a year after the first and apparently being a direct reprint of the first with just the date changed - in effect a second issue, rather than a true second edition. Josephs Akademie in Wien. Simon, Gastronomica 1204 Blake p. 355 Wellcome IV, p.402 (imperfect, portrait wanting) NUC records three locations.

Zt. mit goldgeprägtem RückenschildErste Ausgabe, selten. - Goedeke IV/1, 609, 80 d. - Hayn-Hotendorf I, 463. - Holzmann/Bohatta IV, 11720. - Weyermann, Ulmer Gelehrte II, 121. 1784 - Bd. I, Heft 2. Mit 5 kol. gestoch. Schattenrissen. Kl.-8°. 384 S. Wohl erste Ausgabe. - Hayn-Got. VII, 126 (Rar); Allgemeine Lit. Zeitung Bd. 1-2; Kayser 327. In diesem 2. Schlichter Pappbd. d. Zt., angeschmutzt u. abgegriffen, Vorsätze mit zarten Kritzeleien. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Bookseller & Author / Published by H. Brocas at No. 88 Dame Street Dublin / Engraved by H. Brocas [caption title]

Dublin: H. Brocas, [1784 or later], 1784. An unauthorized issue. An unusually fine, large, clean copy.. Hand colored aquatint, 35 x 41 cm. An Irish issue of the caricature by Thomas Rowlandson, first published in London Sept. 25, 1784, with the famous scene depicting the bookseller looking unsympathetically at the struggling author who is pleading his case, manuscript in hand. Brocas was a well-known Irish watercolorist, illustrator and engraver, and 88 Dame Street was an active location in Dublin for engravers and print makers of the time, including those who produced pirated editions of English originals, of which this is most likely an example. For many years this copy was the property of San Francisco bookseller Warren R. Howell, who was also known for sometimes looking unsympathetically on visiting booksellers and impecunious collectors.

London J. Murray; and W. Nicoll 1784 - 12mo., engraved frontispiece of The Three Graces, (24) + 252pp., including the half-title, a little, mainly marginal, browning and spotting, some light soiling, early ownership names on endpapers, contemporary mottled sheep, appropriately rebacked to match, gilt lettered. A good copy. One of four early editions (1772, 1775, 1779 and 1784), each pretty scarce. Maclean (18th century household and cookery books>) p.20. Arranged encyclopaedia style, the author produces some 326 recipes to suit every occasion and every perceived defect. It was, the author admits, a 'performance'. 'The chief intention of this performance is to point out, and explain to the fair sex, the methods by which they may preserve and add to their charms; and by which many natural blemishes and imperfections may be remedied or concealed. The same share of grace and attractions is not possessed by all of them', he tactfully acknowledges; 'but while the improvement of their persons is the indispensable duty of those who have been little favoured by nature, it should not be neglected even by the few who have received the largest proportion of her gifts. .'.

Remondini's version of Gerhard Muller's landmark map of 1754 showing the discoveries of Captains Bering and Tschirikow. Muller originally published his map in response to Joseph Delisle and Philippe Buache's map that showed previously unknown Russian discoveries and an elaborate (and entirely speculative) depiction of the imaginary voyage of Admiral De Fonte through a Northwest Passage. The map was updated several times, most significantly in 1773 after the expedition of Ivan Synd in which the elongated peninsula was shortened in favor of a large group of islands. Interestingly the speculative Northwest Passage is still shown connecting to Hudson Bay via a mythical River of the West. Dated on the plate 1784. The map was published in the Remondini's atlas, who bought in 1784 Santini's plates from his "Atlas Universel dresse sur les meuilleures cartes modernes" of 1776. This map however was only included in Remondini's atlas of 1784. Copperplate with original outline colour, light folds in the middle, otherwise good condition. Hayes p. 29-32, Kershaw, 1146, Verner & Stuart-Stubbs, 38, p. 272-275, Wagner, 633. Dimensioni 670 510mm

Historia de Abiponibus equestri bellicosaque Paraguariæ Natione locupletata Copiosis Barbararum Gentium, Urbium, fluminum, ferarum, amphibiorum, insectorum

First edition. Dobrizhoffer (1717 - 1791) was sent to South America in 1749 where he spent 18 years among the Abipones (now an extinct tribe). "The most complete, faithful, and interesting detail of the life, habits, and character of a savage tribe which was ever written" (Field, 431). Sabin in the same line says "Almost the only work relating to this almost unknown tribe of Indians, and is a memorial of a nearly 18 years of suffering and toil amongst a most savage race'" This was one of the books in Robert Southey's remarkable collection of books in Spanish and Portuguese. He had hoped to write a history of Portugal but completed only his History of Brazil (1810-19). Writing to his friend John Rickman on 18 February 1809, he said of Dobrizhoffer's book, "I have just spent the best part of three weeks in getting at it, & it is one of the best books I have met with." At Southey's suggestion, Sara Coleridge translated it into English in 1822.
