At the close of the Revolutionary War, Navy hero John Paul Jones accepts a payment from one of the leading financiers of the American cause

Philadelphia, July 17, 1783. 18" x 12.25". "Autograph Document Signed, ""Paul Jones,"" 1 page, 6.75"" x 2.75"" (visible), professionally matted and framed to 18"" x 12.25"". Philadelphia, July 17, 1783. In full: ""Received Philadelphia July 17th 1783 from John Ross Esqr. the Sum of one hundred Dollars on account———Paul Jones £37.10.0"" Jones, who had established his reputation as a daring naval officer following his defeat of the H.M.S. Serapis aboard the U.S.S. Bonhomme Richard in 1779, had recently returned from the Caribbean, where he had joined a French fleet that was preparing an expedition against Jamaica—cancelled when news of the Treaty of Paris arrived in April 1783. He returned to Philadelphia, arriving there in late May aboard the brig Prince Alberti in order to await a new assignment. Jones remained in Philadelphia where he received the above-noted payment from John Ross (1726-1800), a prominent merchant who pledged nearly £20,000 of his personal credit toward financing the Continental Army. Soon afterwards, Jones, in poor health, removed to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania where he spent the remainder of the summer at the Sun Inn in the company of Samuel Wharton of Philadelphia. According to Jones, he was unable to regain his health, ""I recovered it only in autumn, with the aid of cold baths."" Following his recovery, Jones petitioned Congress to appoint him agent to settle the claims of his officers and men with the French Court (""Capt. John Paul Jones at Bethlehem..."" (Massachusetts Spy, Worcester, June 5, 1783, 3; The Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography, 1915, 39:244; Jones, Gawalt & Sellers, John Paul Jones' Memoir of the American Revolution: Presented to King Louis XVI of France, 66)."

        Summary and free reflections,

8vo., xvii (1) 115 (1) 142 - 178pp., well bound in recent old-style half calf gilt over marbled boards with the original label re-used, with two or three very small old inkstamps of Leyton Public Library, else a very good crisp copy. [For further notes, including a note on collation, see below]. [bound with], An endeavour to prove that reason is alone sufficient to the firm establishment of religion, which must on principles of faith be ever precarious. Chelmsford: printed by W. Clachar, S. Gray, and Co. 1788. 8vo., 31 (1) 64pp. [bound with], A physical enquiry into the powers and properties of spirit, and, how far by analogical inferences resulting from experimental and natural phoenomena, the human intellect may be enabled to attain to any rational conception of omnipotence. Chelmsford: printed by Clachar, Gray, & Co. 1787. 8vo., vi 82pp. [bound with], A postscript to the physical enquiry into the powers and properties of spirit, &c. Chelmsford: printed by Clachar, Gray, & Co. 1787. 8vo., 6 (4) 7 - 34pp. [bound with], A free enquiry into the enormous increase of attornies, with some serious reflections on the abuse of our excellent laws: By an unfeigned admirer of genuine British jurisprudence. And a Postscript, in which the reform of our Parliamentary Constituency is again considered, by the Original Proposer of that Interesting Measure. Chelmsford: printed by Clachar, Gray, & Co. 1785. 8vo., iv 68pp. A complex collection of individual pieces by Henry Constantine Jennings (1731-1819), the collector, who is known to history for his often ill-judged art collecting, his bankruptcies and his many personal idiosyncracies. (His one success seems to have been the acquisition of the ancient masterpiece of an over-life-sized crouching dog from the art dealer Bartolomeo Cavaceppi which realised ?1000 at a Christies sale in 1778/9). This is a curious collection of essays, all published privately in Chelmsford (Essex) and apparently complete (see ESTC). The essays include recommendations for bathing and swimming and that children should "draw off both shoes and stockings" and "dabble in puddles". "I would even recommend that they should every day, for at least an hour or two, play about bare-foot in wet or dry". The Free Enquiry into the enormous increase of attornies is remarkably objective in view of Jennings's recent stretch in Chelmsford prison as a consequence of his financial embarrassments. It begins with the observation that Members of Parliament were elected by "not one sixth part of their fellow countrymen". And goes on to declare that "the object of my enmity, is not the law, it is the wretched, quibbling, prostituted habits of its practicers, the expensive grievance of its formalities, - the insolence and roguery of its professors" that he objected to. It seems to have been a heartfelt commentary based on his own experiences. * The date "1783" is hand-stamped onto the title-page just below the imprint.

A dissertation on the pernicious effects of gaming.

8vo., (4) 100pp., tiny blank strip removed from upper margin of title (removing a signature? but nowhere near printed surface), contemporary tree calf gilt, a little wear to spine and joints but overall a very good crisp copy. First edition: very scarce. Apparently no copy in Goldsmiths, Kress, Black, Einaudi, Mattioli, Hollander, Masui or Cotton & Little. ESTC, however, locates copies at 7 UK libraries (3 of which in Cambridge) and 6 in N.America. [bound with], HEY, Richard A dissertation on suicide. Published, by appointment, as having gained a prize* (May 1785) in the University of Cambridge. Cambridge: printed by J. Archdeacon .... for J. & J. Merrill, in Cambridge; T. Cadell, B. White, and G. & J. Wilkie, London. 1785. 8vo., (6) 90pp., including the half-title. A very good crisp copy. Two related dissertations by Richard Hey (1745-1835), the essayist and mathematician, the first a forensic examination of gambling and gamblers, the second a study of gambling's final "pernicious effect", suicide. Hey's dissertation on gaming was the author's "chief work" (R.E. Anderson, revised by Rebecca Mills in ODNB) and seems to be a remarkably insightful inspection of gambling in England in the latter part of the 18th century. And so, among much else, including, of course, Hey's graphic account of the destruction of the gambler's marriage, he paints a vivid portrait of the gambler's near-psychotic state. "The exercise of the Gaming Table excites such passions as put a man off his guard and prepare him for taking offence at the most trivial matters. Eager and impatient to be shaking the box, to lay down, to take up money, to do he scarcely knows what; anxious for the fate of sums depending, which, accordingly as the dice decide, will make him a rich man or a poor one; elevated beyond the bounds of sober courage by a run of good luck, or made peevish by bad luck; preyed upon by suspicion of malpractice in those with whom he has associated himself, and stung with envy at the prizes carried off by the fortunate; - agitated and heated by such passions as these, he is ready to catch fire from the smallest spark; and having lost his self-command, he is not in a situation to extinguish the unmanageable flame. ......". * Hey was awarded a prize of 50 guineas for each.

The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire: Volume the Sixth and Volume the Seventh

      W. Strahan and T. Cadell, London - This two book set we are offering consists of the 6th and 7th volume of the series. It is in good shape especially taking into consideration the age of these works. Volume the Sixth was published in 1783 and Volume the Seventh in 1790. Bound in a medium brown calf with tooled board edges, spine cords and accents. Volume 6 retains title label on spine, volume 7 is missing this label. the leather has some rubbing and darkening of the edges. Hinges are cracking and will need to be handled with care. All corners are bumped and showing some board, mostly upper. The leather of both spines has worn away at head and tail, more so on Volume 6. Hand sewn headbands have darkened somewhat with age, solid with little frayed cording. Upper edges of textblocks tinted dark red, remaining edges are red speckled. Tooling on edges of boards mostly remains on fore-edges, faded on tails and very faded on heads. Unique sewn endpapers have yellowed over time and shadowed the underlying leather. Owner's name neatly inked on fep's of both volumes. Volume 6 also has a book plate affixed on front paste-down. Front fep of Volume 7 has parted from tail to nearly head and will need to be handled with care. Interior text of both volumes has yellowed with age, very early faint foxing. Tight in their bindings. Owner's pencilled notation concerning estate located on gutter of "Table of Contents" of the sixth volume, "Preface" of the seventh. No other markings appear. The sixth volume contains 420 pages of text; seventh volume has 424. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Santa Fe de Bogota 1783 - The state of colonial Colombia, prepared for the Archbishop-Viceroy. 1783. Santa Fe de Bogota. In folio (300 mm x 196 mm). 35 ff. + 3 [blanks]. Contemporary full calf, gilt fillets to boards, spine flat tooled in gilt with lettering piece; light rubbing. Excellent condition, remarkably clean, oxidation to one page a small rust hole; verso of ff. 34 with lead seal. A handsome contemporary manuscript copy detailing the estate of New Granada’s colonial forces, during the reign of Antonio Cavallero y Gongora. As stated on the first ff., this is a copy of the brief provided by the Teniente General del Regimiento fijo of Cartagena; the copy is, however, authenticated, it is signed at the end by Antonio Cavallero y Gongora (1723 – 1796); Cavallero was a Spanish Archbishop and, from 1782 to 1789, Viceroy of New Granada. He gained fame for his participation and efforts to disarticulate the Comunero revolt in 1781, as well as for exercising the position of Viceroy simultaneously to being the Archbishop. The comunero revolt was based on the thought that the will of the King cannot be above the will of the common folk. This ideal will later lead to the fragmentation of the Spanish Empire in South America during the wars of Independence. It contains the state of the infantry division of Catagena and Santa Fe, the Batallón de Pardos Libres, Compañías de Pardos Libres, Compañías de Milicianos de Lorica, etc. The battalions of “pardos”, refer to the sons of Spanish and criollas.         Etat Present de la Russie.

a St. Petersbourg & a Leipzig. 1783 1783. First translation into French from the original Dutch. Octavo, 160x90mm, in period tan calf binding with an abrasion mark on the front board; spine double-gilt ruled into compartments with floral decorations in the centers, and slightly darker brown lettering-piece. Marbled end-papers. Ownership inscription 'R A Longmire [Former British Foreign Office Soviet specialist and prolific author] | Moscow | September 1951' on the front free end-paper. viii, 206, [2] pages, slightly tanned. All edges marbled. Charming silhouette of Catherine the Great on the title page. Pieter van Woensel (1747-1808) was a restless adventurer, traveller and prolific author. He studied medicine at Leiden then went to Saint Petersburg in 1771 as an army physician. In 1780 he returned to Amsterdam and published ?The Present State of Russia? in 1781. In 1782 he translated a French work on the abolition of slavery. He spent some time in Constantinople and published a work on Turkish society in 1789. He served with the Russian fleet in the Crimea then stayed in Sebastopol, describing the visit of Catharina II of Russia. He also published his research on the plague. Later, in Amsterdam, he was appointed naval physician to the Admiralty, sailing as ship?s doctor to Surinam, Demerara and Berbice. In 1797 he travelled to Russia as a secret agent. Van Woensel wrote under the pseudonym Amurath-Effendi, Hekim-Bachi in the satirical almanac de Lantaarn, writing in favour of divorce and tolerance towards Muslims and Jews. The almanac was banned because he wrote under a pseudonym. Van Woensel was outspoken on slavery and serfdom and was critical of Russian policies; he considered Grigori Potemkin a wind bag. COPAC reports only two copies of this work in UK libraries: British Library and University of London, ULRLS. WORLDCAT shows a single European copy at the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek and six copies in USA institutions.(Further information and photographs available on request.)

First edition of a fundamental work in Meteorology in which Saussure describes how to construct a hygrometer from human hair that can measure the relative humidity, and discussing the principles behind it. Cuvier regarded this book as one of the greatest contributions to science of the eighteenth century."A milestone work in chemistry, physics, and meteorology, which established hygrometry as an exact science. Primarely a geologist who explored and published on the Alps, Saussure (1740-1788) was the first to prove that air expands and becomes less dense the more humidity it contains. In these Essais (the work offered) he describes his experiments with the hair hygrometer of his invention and his theory of the evaporation and hygrometry with their applications to meteorology. he also enunciates his theory of the evaporation of water in hydrogen, carbon dioxide, and other gases."(Neville II, p. 427 a)."In his essay on the theoretical principles of hygrometry (which he conceives as "the art of measuring the absolute quantity of water suspended in the air"), De Saussure distinguishes three classes of methods of determining humidity, which respectively utilize (i) observations of changes in the weight, dimensions, or shape, of a hygroscopic body; (ii) observations of the capacity of the air for taking up water; and (iii) observations of the quantity of water condensing from the air under given conditions on a cold surface, or of the degree of cold necessary to start such an condensation..."(Wolf "A History of Science , Technology, & Philosophy in the 18th Century" I, p. 326 ff.).Partington III, 763. - Partington "Breakthroughs" 1783 M - Poggendorff II, 755-56

PRELIMINARY ARTICLES OF PEACE, BETWEEN HIS BRITANNICK MAJESTY, AND THE MOST CHRISTIAN KING. SIGNED AT VERSAILLES, THE 20TH OF JANUARY, 1783

London, 1783. Quarto. Dbd. Some minimal old ink underscoring, else a near fine copy, untrimmed. The first British publication of the terms of peace agreed upon between France and England after the American Revolution. The French had hoped to obtain more from England in the final peace settlement, but De Grasse's catastrophic naval loss to Rodney in the Caribbean in 1782 weakened their position, and the American commissioners forced their hand by coming to their own accord with the British on Nov. 30, 1782. By this treaty the British cede Newfoundland fishing rights, return St. Lucia and Tobago to France, and France gives back Nevis, Grenada, St. Kitts, Montserrat and St. Vincent to the British, as well as territorial exchanges in India. This treaty was vital to the final resolution of the American Revolution, since the United States was pledged to move with France as an ally, and was not in a position to settle without her. The final treaties of all the warring powers were signed on Nov. 3, 1783. DAVENPORT 169. AMERICAN CONTROVERSY 83-45.

Small crack at the top of one joint, a few trivial marks on some boards, but these bindings could not be in any finer condition. First and last leaves discolored due to binding turn-ins, two title-pages spotted, scattered foxing and occasional light browning. Overall in extraordinarily fresh state. Freakishly fine late 18th-century English tree-calf. Atterbury (1663-1732) was royal chaplain to William and Mary and later to Queen Anne. When George I took power Atterbury refused to take the oath of fidelity and was ultimately banished from England. This collection of his correspondences, many with prominent political and religious contemporaries, provides critical insight into the history of the period. The present set comes from the library of William Downes (1752-1826), Chief-Justice of the King's Bench in Ireland for 20 years, and one of the leading Irish judges of his time. Many of the books from his collection survive in exceptional state, as here. Our copy features Downes' paper library shelf-mark on vol. 1: within a circle, a letter "B" (for the bookcase) above "4" (shelf number) followed by "4 vols." We have observed this same label on Downes' copy of Caspar Neumann's "Chemical WorksÂ…abridged and methodized" (London, 1759), now with Messrs. Nigel Phillips.

Reales ordenanzas para la direccion, regimen y gobierno del importante cuerpo de la mineria de Nueva-España, y de su real tribunal general. De orden de su magestad.

Royal decrees relating to mining in New Spain: discovery of new mines, operation of old ones, training of workers and royal officials, duties of experts, introduction of new technology, role of the Tribunal de la Minería and the requirements (including purity of blood) for appointment to it, and many more aspects of this important economic activity. The work was carefully compiled and indexed by José de Galvez, was originally printed in Madrid in 1783, and is here in the first printing to take place in a viceroyalty.Sabin calls this work a "rare and valuable compendium of the old mining laws and mineral customs." Galvez was a special commissioner charged with making reforms in the governing of Mexico; his work greatly influenced the 1786 replacement of the Mexican provinces with 12 intendencias. The 18th century saw a rebirth of the Mexican and the Peruvian silver industry as new technologies and techniques were introduced. Concomitant with the increased production was increased wealth for the mine owners and the crown.

Kant wrote his Prolegomena to Any Future Metaphysics as a clarification of the Critique of Pure Reason, which he believed to had been widely misunderstood on publication two years previously. It became one of Kant's most influential works and he incorporated much of it into the second edition of the Critique, itself now accepted as "Kant's great achievement [which] concluded finally the lines on which philosophical speculation had proceeded in the eighteenth century" (PMM 226). An attractively bound copy of this highly important work, with an interesting Hungarian provenance.

[LETTER, SIGNED, FROM GENERAL GUY CARLETON TO GENERAL CLARKE, REGARDING DESERTERS AT THE CLOSE OF THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR; TOGETHER WITH A DOCUMENT SIGNED BY GENERAL FREDERICK MACKENZIE ON THE SAME SUBJECT]

New York, 1783. Folio. Old fold lines. Minor soiling and wear. Very good. In a half morocco and cloth clamshell box, spine gilt. Letter, signed by Brigadier General Guy Carleton, written to Brigadier General Alured Clarke regarding clemency for deserters from the British Army at the end of the American Revolution; together with orders for General Clarke from Deputy Adjutant General Frederick Mackenzie, dated May 14th, to deny any deserters wishing to return to the ranks. At the time, Carleton, who was Commander in Chief of all British forces in North America, was overseeing the evacuation of the British forces and Loyalists from New York, a process that would last until November. He writes: "I enclose a copy of an order [not present] I have given here relative to deserters: Such as come in and surrender themselves to the officer commanding at any of our posts, shall be pardoned in like manner. You will take such measures for the transportation of the sick from Philadelphia to this place, as, from their numbers and other circumstances, you shall judge most convenient and adviseable, paying some attention to their own wishes." The order from General Mackenzie, however, is far less forgiving and countermands Carleton's order: "The Commander in Chief has so far pardoned several English deserters, as to allow them to return within the lines, and to send them home; but their dishonor is not done away. No regiment here shall receive them, nor shall they again serve in this army. 'Tis recommended to the soldiers of every British, and to the soldiers of every British American Corps, to kick all such rascals out of their quarters, should they have the impudence to come in among them."
