        Description des Experiences de la Machine Aerostatique de MM. de Montgolfier, et de celles auxquelles cette decouverte a donne lieu;

      Paris: Chez Cuchet 1783 - Fairly recent French full leather binding, with gilt titles and decoration to the spine. Barthélémy Faujas de Saint-Fond (a French geologist & traveller) produced this work in 1783 as the Montgolfier brothers were conducting their experiments. This is the revised edition of the book - with a supplement and further information about the brother’s experiments in June-September 1783. There is a brief supplement to the rear adding information about the flight of November 21, in which Pilâtre de Rozier, accompanied by the Marquis d'Arlandes, made the first aerial voyage in history - this last flight is often recorded in engravings as the first flight over Paris. There was a second continuation volume issued in 1784. 9 engravings (number 5 is the frontis illustration). The leather binding is in good clean and tidy condition, with just a touch of bumping to the corners. Internally the book is in very nice condition, with just the odd foxing spot, although these are more prevalent to the beginning, and the title page is significantly spotted. Frontis, xl, 1-299, [vii] - 8 plates. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        The History of America. Fourth Edition.

      London, Straham, Cadall and Balfour (Edinburgh), 1783. - 3 Bde. XLVII, 336 SS. (4), 474 SS. (4), 432, (40) SS. Mit einem gefalteten Kupferstich (Azteken-Zeichnungen). Zeitgenöss. Lederbde. mit reicher Rückenvergoldung und jeweils zwei farbigen Rückenschildern. Marmorvorsätze. Gr.-8vo. Bemerkenswert schön gebundenes Exemplar aus dem Besitz des Trierer Geologen und Historikers Johann Steininger (1794-1874), der nach dem Studium in Paris von 1815-1857 am Gymnasium in Trier Naturwissenschaften lehrte. Sein prominentester Schüler war Karl Marx (vgl. G. Groß, in: Trierer Biogr. Lex., hg. v. Heinz Monz, Trier 2000, S. 450), weswegen das Werk auch als mögliche Quelle zu Marx' Amerika-Unterricht gelten kann. Auch sonst kommt Steininger als früher Einfluß auf Marx in Frage: ihm wurde vorgeworfen, daß er seit Beginn seiner Lehrtätigkeit in Trier am Christentum rüttele, "wodurch mancher Jüngling den Glauben verliert"; das Provinzialschulkollegium bezweifelte am 25. Januar 1834 seine "vaterländische Gesinnnung". - Ecken etwas bestoßen, Kapitale teils lädiert. Alle Bände mit Exlibris "Johannis Steininger" am Titel. gegen Ende oder zu Anfang sporfleckig, die Titelblätter mit Stempelauswaschung und meist kl. Papierläsuren.

        A practical treatise on chimneys. Containing full directions for preventing or removing smoke in houses, Illustrated with copperplates. Third edition.

      Edinburgh: printed for C. Elliot. Sold at London by T. Cadell 1783 - 12mo., large folding engraved copperplate comprising 18 figures, vi + 82 + (2)pp., including the final leaf of 'Directions to the Binder', contemporary quarter calf over marbled boards, old paper label on spine, upper joint cracked but sound, slight wear to extremities, else a very good presentation copy inscribed in ink 'M'Tavish Esqr from the Author>' and with the later armorial bookplate of Seton of Mounie on front pastedown. A very scarce edition, ESTC recording copies at only 4 libraries: BL + NLS + Un. of Delaware + Niedersachsische Staats-Bibliothek. An analysis of the causes of smoky chimneys with suggested solutions to the problem. This work was first published anonymously in an Edinburgh edition of 1776 but, as the author explains in his Advertisement>, he has cast aside his concealment as other writers 'of several Treatises' and inventors had been taking advantage of his ideas. Dr James Anderson (1739-1807) was a Scottish agriculturist and political economist who co-operated with Jeremy Bentham and Sir John Sinclair of Ulbster, the famous Scottish agronomist, but also produced a large body of his own work and issued the monthly Recreations in Agriculture>, 1797-1802. Although Anderson originally signed this particular copy for an unknown M'Tavish, it later passed into his wife's family, the Setons of Mounie, Aberdeenshire. Anderson married the heiress Margaret Seton in 1768. The inscription, A. Seton>, may refer to their eldest son, Alexander (1760-1850) who succeeded his mother in 1768, having assumed the Seton surname by the terms of succession, or possibly his eldest son, also Alexander, born 1815.         A Dissertation on the Pernicious Effects of Gaming; A Dissertation on Duelling; A Dissertation on Suicide

      Printed by J. Archdeacon Printer to the University. Three volumes bound in one Octavo full smooth calf ruled in gilt, rebacked (some time ago) in poorer quality leather to match, gilt lettered spine label, marbled endpapers Richard Hey (1745 - 1835) was born in Leeds and educated at Cambridge. In 1771 he was called to the bar at the Middle Temple and took the degree of LL. D. in 1778. He did not succeed as a barrister, however, so he retired from the bar. He was a Fellow and tutor of Sidney Sussex College until 1778 and then of Magdalene College from 1782 to 1796. In 1782 some gentleman offered anonymously, through the University of Cambridge, to give a prize of fifty guineas for the best "Dissertation on the Pernicious Effects of Gaming". Richard Hey obtained the prize and the work was published in 1783, with a second and a third edition. The same gentleman offered a similar sum of fifty guineas, in the year following for the best "Dissertation on Duelling", and a third time for the best"Dissertation on Suicide". Richard Hey won both of those prizes and both dissertations were published, the one in 1784 and the other in 1785, with a second edition in 1812 when the three dissertations were published in one volume. In 1792 he wrote an article "Answer to Paine's Rights of Man" in which 'he demonstrates the system of that arch-theorist to be a system of despotism and tyranny. He entitled this useful publication "Happiness and Rights".' Spine a bit worn, corners a bit rubbed, else fine [Taylor, The biographia Leodiensis; or, Biographical sketches of the worthies of Leeds ... pp. 363-365]

        Von ihm selbst aufgesetzte Lebensbeschreibung.

      Leipzig, Buchhandlung der Gelehrten, 1783. - 8vo (17.5 : 10.5 cm). 8 Bl., 816 S., 1 Bl. Errata. Einzige Ausgabe. ?Die Mündigsprechung der arabischen Philologie erfolgte durch den genialen Johann Jakob Reiske (1716 - 1774), den ersten namhaften Arabisten, den Deutschland hervorgebracht hat. Reiske hat die arabische Philologie aus den Fesseln der Theologie befreit und sie auf die Höhe einer selbständigen Wissenschaft erhoben. Das Studium der Sprache war ihm nicht Selbstzweck, sondern Grundlage für die Erforschung der islamischen Geschichte, die er in die allgemeine Weltgeschichte einzuordnen und zu deuten unternahm. Seine Zeitgenossen vermochten seinen kühnen Ideen nicht zu folgen, er wurde zum ?Märtyrer der arabischen Literatur?, und sein Leben zu jener Leidensgeschichte, von der seine Lebensbeschreibung so ergreifend Zeugnis ablegt? (verkürzt nach Fück, Die arabischen Studien in Europa, 1955, p. 108-124). - Reiskes Schriften erschienen in kleinsten Auflagen und zählen zu den Rara der europäischen Orientalistik. Die Autobiographie reicht bis 1770, Reiskes Witwe Ernestine Christine ergänzte die letzten Lebensjahre.         Summary and free reflections, in which the great outline only, and principal features, of the following subjects are impartially traced, and candidly examined.

      Chelmsford: printed by Clachar Frost and Gray; for the author. * 1783 - 8vo., xvii + (1) + 115 + (1) + 142 - 178pp., well bound in recent old-style half calf gilt over marbled boards with the original label re-used, with two or three very small old inkstamps of Leyton Public Library, else a very good crisp copy. [For further notes, including a note on collation, see below]. [bound with], An endeavour to prove that reason is alone sufficient to the firm establishment of religion, which must on principles of faith be ever precarious.> Chelmsford: printed by W. Clachar, S. Gray, and Co. 1788. 8vo., 31 + (1) + 64pp. [bound with], A physical enquiry into the powers and properties of spirit, and, how far by analogical inferences resulting from experimental and natural phoenomena, the human intellect may be enabled to attain to any rational conception of omnipotence.> Chelmsford: printed by Clachar, Gray, & Co. 1787. 8vo., vi + 82pp. [bound with], A postscript to the physical enquiry into the powers and properties of spirit, &c.> Chelmsford: printed by Clachar, Gray, & Co. 1787. 8vo., 6 + (4) + 7 - 34pp. [bound with], A free enquiry into the enormous increase of attornies, with some serious reflections on the abuse of our excellent laws: By an unfeigned admirer of genuine British jurisprudence. And a Postscript, in which the reform of our Parliamentary Constituency is again considered, by the Original Proposer of that Interesting Measure.> Chelmsford: printed by Clachar, Gray, & Co. 1785. 8vo., iv + 68pp. A complex collection of individual pieces by Henry Constantine Jennings (1731-1819), the collector, who is known to history for his often ill-judged art collecting, his bankruptcies and his many personal idiosyncracies. (His one success seems to have been the acquisition of the ancient masterpiece of an over-life-sized crouching dog from the art dealer Bartolomeo Cavaceppi which realised £1000 at a Christies sale in 1778/9). This is a curious collection of essays, all published privately in Chelmsford (Essex) and apparently complete (see ESTC). The essays include recommendations for bathing and swimming and that children should 'draw off both shoes and stockings' and 'dabble in puddles'. 'I would even recommend that they should every day, for at least an hour or two, play about bare-foot in wet or dry'. The Free Enquiry into the enormous increase of attornies> is remarkably objective in view of Jennings's recent stretch in Chelmsford prison as a consequence of his financial embarrassments. It begins with the observation that Members of Parliament were elected by 'not one sixth part of their fellow countrymen'. And goes on to declare that 'the object of my enmity, is not the law, it is the wretched, quibbling, prostituted habits of its practicers, the expensive grievance of its formalities, - the insolence and roguery of its professors' that he objected to. It seems to have been a heartfelt commentary based on his own experiences. * The date '1783' is hand-stamped onto the title-page just below the imprint. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Commentaries on the Laws of England.

      London: W. Strahan, T. Cadell, and D. Prince, 1783. Finely bound set of Blackstone's landmark work. Octavo, 4 volumes. Bound in full period calf, gilt tooling and titles to the spine, red leather title labels lettered in gilt, small oval green leather labels with volume numbers. Portrait frontispiece in Volume 1, one plates and folding chart in Volume 2. Ninth Edition, stated. This edition contains the last corrections made during the life of the author. In very good condition. Blackstone's work succeeded that of Edward Coke as the foundational treatise on English law. PMM states "Blackstone's great work on the laws of England is the extreme example of justification of an existing state of affairs by virtue of its history... Until the Commentaries, the ordinary Englishman had viewed the law as a vast, unintelligible and unfriendly machine... Blackstone's great achievement was to popularize the law and the traditions which had influenced its formation... He takes a delight in describing and defending as the essence of the constitution the often anomalous complexities which had grown into the laws of England over the centuries. But he achieves the astonishing feat of communicating this delight, and this is due to a style which is itself always lucid and graceful." The influence of Blackstone on the Founding Fathers should not be understated. While Jefferson ultimately grew to dislike Blackstone, Hamilton cited the Commentaries in Federalists No. 69 and 84 to bolster the case for the Constitution. Grolier/English 52; PMM 212; Rothschild 407.

        Estados de los cuerpos veteranos fixos y de milicias de infant.a caballeria y drag. correspondientes al nuevo plan propuesto por el Arzobispo Virrey de S. Fe en Carta reservada del 15 de Junio de este año, para la dotacion de aquella Capital, Plaza de Cartagena y otros Parages del Reyno de Tierra Firme

      A handsome contemporary manuscript copy detailing the estate of New Granada's colonial forces, during the reign of Antonio Cavallero y Gongora. As stated on the first ff., this is a copy of the brief provided by the Teniente General del Regimiento fijo of Cartagena; the copy is, however, authenticated, it is signed at the end by Antonio Cavallero y Gongora (1723 - 1796); Cavallero was a Spanish Archbishop and, from 1782 to 1789, Viceroy of New Granada. He gained fame for his participation and efforts to disarticulate the Comunero revolt in 1781, as well as for exercising the position of Viceroy simultaneously to being the Archbishop. The comunero revolt was based on the thought that the will of the King cannot be above the will of the common folk. This ideal will later lead to the fragmentation of the Spanish Empire in South America during the wars of Independence. It contains the state of the infantry division of Catagena and Santa Fe, the Batallón de Pardos Libres, Compañías de Pardos Libres, Compañías de Milicianos de Lorica, etc. The battalions of "pardos", refer to the sons of Spanish and criollas.

        Histoire d'Ayder-Ali-Khan, Nabab-Bahader,

      Paris: Cailleau,, 1783. roi des Canarins, &c. souba de Scirra; dayva du Mayssour, souverain des empires du Cherequi & du Calicut, &c. nabab du Benguelour, &c. seigneur des montagnes & vallés, roi des isles de la mer... ou nouveaux mémoires sur l'Inde, enrichis de notes historiques. 2 volumes, duodecimo (164 x 94 mm). Contemporary tree sheep, gilt banded smooth spines, black and olive-green twin labels, yellow edges. Folding hand-coloured engraved map of India, woodcut head-pieces. A few wormholes to spines, two labels a little rubbed, volume I half-title a little ragged at fore-edge, a couple of gatherings lightly browned, paper flaw in blank margin at I1 volume II, a few leaves in volume II lightly dampstained at foot but a very good set with half-titles and an intriguing provenance: contemporary ownership inscription on half-titles of "delaRoche", a "capitaine d'infanterie". First edition of this important eyewitness account of military service, during the Anglo-Mysore Wars, under Hyder Ali (1720-1782), sultan of Mysore; it was published the year after his death and an English translation appeared in editions at London and Dublin in 1784 and later in the 19th-century. It was the basis for a version (1784-86) by Matthias Christian Sprengel, the most important German historian of India in the eighteenth century. "De La Tour's text was based on two central strategies: presenting a positive image of Haidar Ali and criticizing the British for both their conduct towards Haidar and other Indian rulers and towards the French, while at the same time defending the conduct of the French in India. In doing so, De La Tour consciously wrote against an existing image of Haidar Ali as a cruel Oriental despot and intolerant Muslim. Haidar Ali became known as a personality in Europe during the First Anglo-Mysore War of 1767-9 because of his surprising military success against the British that seemed to undermine existing perceptions of Indian military inferiority" (Chen Tzoref-Ashkenazi, German Soldiers in Colonial India, 2016, p. 146). The author, Maistre De La Tour, a French mercenary in Hyder's service, is described on the title page as "général de dix mille hommes de l'empire Mogol, & ci-devant commandant en chef l'artillerie de l'armée d'Ayder-Ali, & un corps de troiupes Européennes, à la solde de ce Nabab" (a general of ten thousand men of the Mogul empire, and formerly commander-in-chief of the artillery of the army of Ayder Ali, and a body of three European troops in the pay of that Nabob). Decidedly uncommon, Copac locates copies at only three British and Irish institutional libraries (BL, Oxford, Manchester); OCLC adds below two dozen locations worldwide. A very appealing copy in a contemporary binding.

        Nouveau voyage a la Mer du Sud : commencé sous les ordres de M. Marion ... On a joint à cet voyage un Extrait de celui de M. de Surville dans les mêmes Parages.

      The first French voyages to Australia and New Zealand.  Paris : Barrois l'aîné, 1783. Octavo, quarter calf with gilt ornament and contrasting morocco title label over papered boards, expertly rebacked; pp viii, 291, with 7 engraved plates, including folding map; the plates with occasional pale foxing; a very good copy, finely bound. Marc-Joseph Marion du Fresne (1724-1772) was a skilful and accomplished mariner. In 1746, at the age of just 22, he had commanded the Prince de Conty, which had aided Bonnie Prince Charlie in his escape from Scotland. By the 1760s he was living on the Isle de France (Mauritius), and in 1770 a French vessel arrived there from France with the Polynesian Aotourou on board. Aotourou had been collected on Bougainville's circumnavigation in 1768 and was now to be returned to his native Tahiti. Dufresne undertook to make the voyage to Tahiti, largely at his own expense, but the expedition was struck by smallpox and Aotourou died shortly after setting sail from Mauritius. The expedition continued, however, and after claiming the sub-Antarctic Crozet Islands for France, reached Van Diemen's Land in March 1772, where the two ships anchored at what is now known as Marion Bay. The sailors became the first Frenchmen to set foot on Australian shores, as well as the first Europeans to encounter the indigenous inhabitants of Tasmania. After relations with the Aborigines became hostile, the ships sailed on to New Zealand, only the second time (after de Surville) the French had reached this part of the world. After initial peaceful contact - the French were able to communicate with the Māori based on the few Polynesian words Aotourou had taught them - the expedition broke a covenant by fishing at Manawaora Bay, and were attacked by the Māori, who killed and cannibalised twenty-six of their number, including the commander du Fresne. Crozet, second-in-command of the voyage, retaliated by sacking a village and killing 250 of its inhabitants, before setting sail and returning to France. Du Fresne's journals were lost, but Crozet's manuscripts enabled the publication of this volume in 1783. It includes much detailed information on Māori life and customs. Also included is the first printed account of the earlier expedition to New Zealand of de Surville, who had mapped part of the west coast at the same time as Cook. Davidson wrote in A Book Collector's Notes 'It is an exceedingly rare item and is seldom available'. Hill, 401; Kroepelien, 1104; O'Reilly & Reitman, 326; Davidson, pp. 98-99.
