Octavo, woodcut vignette on title; contemporary continental (?Swiss) mottled calf, spine with small floral device gilt in compartments between raised bands, double orange labels just chipped at edges; a nice copy. The rare second edition. The second French edition, and very scarce. Beddie records only the Mitchell and National Library copies in Australia. 'Both French editions are of great rarity and are of interest not only on that account but because of the additional matter which they contain…' (Holmes). Zimmermann's eye-witness account of Cook's third voyage first appeared, in German, at Mannheim in 1781. The French version was next, with this second French edition and a second German edition appearing in 1783. Dutch editions appeared in 1784 and 1791, and a Russian version was published at St Petersburg in 1786 (Kroepelien, 1365). These seem to have been all the appearances of the narrative until the Alexander Turnbull Library published Tewsley's translation in 1926. As Rodney Davidson wrote of the early printings, 'all these editions are exceedingly rare… It is hard to predict the realisation price for a copy if one were to come into the open market, as competition between collectors would be very keen…'. In any early edition, this is one of the scarcest of all the Cook voyage accounts (there is for example no copy of any of the eighteenth century editions in the catalogue of the Hill collection). It was the first description of the third voyage to appear on the continent, and as one of two accounts first published in 1781 - a full three years before the official account - it may well be the first description of the voyage to have been published. It includes an eyewitness account of Cook's death and is also 'valuable for his lower-deck impressions of the character of Cook…' (Beaglehole). 'Zimmermann, a native of Speyer, was coxswain in the Discovery. From the start of the voyage he determined to keep a shorthand journal of the voyage and to retain it, despite the instructions… demanding the surrender of all logs and journals… His account is by no means free from errors, but it has an ingenuousness and charm which differentiate it from the other accounts. His appreciation of Cook's character deserves to rank with that of Samwell' (Holmes).

        King Street Guildhall

      T. Malton, London 1783 - A rare, early aquatint view of London by one of the great early exponents of the art: "My real master was Tom Malton" (J.M.W. Turner) This view of the Guildhall in King Street, London, shows the work that had been carried out on the south front in 1788-1789 from the designs of George Dance. In addition the colonnade to the west of the facade has been replaced by a brick wall. The church in the center is St. Lawrence Jewry, which was designed by Christopher Wren. The aquatint is a perfect example of the deep, spacious, but highly articulated perspective that Canaletto brought to London mid-century. Thomas Malton the younger, "son of Thomas Malton the elder [1726-1801], was born in 1748, probably in London. He was with his father during the latter's residence in Dublin, and then passed three years in the office of James Gandon, the architect, in London. In 1774 Malton received a premium from the Society of Arts, and in 1782 gained the Academy gold medal for a design for a theatre. In 1773 he sent to the Academy a view of Covent Garden, and was afterwards a constant exhibitor, chiefly of views of London streets and buildings, drawn in Indian ink and tinted; in these. their extreme accuracy in the architectural details renders them of great interest and value as topographical records; they are enlivened with groups of figures, in which Malton is said to have been assisted by F. Wheatley. After leaving Ireland, Malton appears to have always lived in London. and at an evening drawing-class which he held there, received as pupils Thomas Girtin and young J. M. W. Turner, whose father brought him to be taught perspective. In later life Turner often said, My real master was Tom Malton. In 1791 Malton removed to Great Titchfield Street, and finally, in 1796, to Long Acre. He made a few of the drawings for Watts's Seats of the Nobility and Gentry, 1779, &c., and executed some large aquatints of buildings in the metropolis and Bath, being one of the first to avail himself of the newly introduced art of aquatinta for the purpose of multiplying copies of his views." ( DNB ) Adams London Illustrated 72.H. Aquatint, coloured by hand, by Thomas Malton.

An Authentic Narrative of a Voyage performed by Captain Cook and Captain Clerke, in His Majesty's Ships Resolution and Discovery, during the Years 1776, 1777, 1778, 1779, and 1780; in search of a North-West Passage... including a faithful Account of all their Discoveries, and the unfortunate Death of Captain Cook

London: G. Robinson, J. Sewell, and J. Debrett, 1783. Two volumes, octavo, with a folding chart and 21 engraved plates; a fine copy in the original grey boards, spines carefully restored, printed paper labels, uncut. Important Cook narrative, in original boards. An extremely good copy of the second, revised edition in original boards. Ellis, a surgeon's mate and talented amateur artist, sailed first on the Discovery and later on the Resolution. Despite the prohibition by the Admiralty of the publication of any unauthorized account of the voyage, Ellis, who was in financial straits, sold his narrative to a London publisher for 50 guineas, thus earning the condemnation of Sir Joseph Banks, who wrote to him in January 1782 that "I fear it will not in future be in my power to do what it might have been, had you asked and followed my advice". Ellis's narrative contains much valuable information on Alaska, the Northwest Coast, and Hawaii, and is particularly well known for the attractive engraved plates, after the author's drawings, include eight of Hawaii, two of Alaska, and three of the Northwest Coast, among the earliest published of these areas; Choris's famous views did not appear until almost forty years later.

Amérique Septentrionale, ou se remarquent Les Etats Unis.

1783 - Paris: Esnauts et Rapilly, 1783. Fine original colour. 520 x 745mm. A separate-issue map of North America, printed the year of that the Treaty of Paris formally ended the American War of Independence. When the map was first published in 1779 it was the first map of North America to demarcate the United States. This edition has been updated, with the track of Captain Cook on his Third Voyage, on which he hunted for the North West Passage from the Pacific, shown on the West Coast. Also of interest are East & West Florida, still coloured the red used for British possessions: as the two Floridas were ceded to Spain in the Treaty of Paris it suggests that this map was published before the terms of the treaty were known. West Florida is also unusually large, covering the modern states of Mississippi and Alabama. The original colour is particularly fine.

The 'Specimen Historicum Typographicae' of Laire is criticised. Some ommisions of Mattaire, of Orlandi, and of Laire, are supplied, and Rive declared that Laire was so deeply affected by the criticism of Audiffredi, that he quitted Italy in disgust; but it is necessary to say that Rive did not always maintain the dignity of his pen, and his bad temper often prompted his attacks on contemporaries - Peignot."

Neue topograph Karte der K:K:Haupt und Residenz Stadt Wien samt der auf 6 quatrat meilen umliegenden Gegend.

Wien, J. G. Weingand, 1783.. In 3 Farben gedruckter Kupferstichkarte von Mauer, Bildausschnitt 50 x 70 cm, Blattgr. 54 x 74 cm.. Dörflinger I, p. 87ff.; vgl.

Marine

Paris, 1783; 1786; 1787. Paris, 1783; 1786; 1787. b/w engraved plates, many double page or folding. Three 4to volumes. xii, (1 folding table), 712; 784; 897, (xiii)-xvi pp. Plus atlas of 175 plates. This is the “Marine” section of Pancoucke’s massive 200-plus volume encyclopedia, which itself was an expanded version of Diderot’s 27 volume effort. It includes a plate volume of 175 engravings showing all phases of marine technology - from cartography to rope making. The three text volumes are arranged alphabetically by topic, and discuss such things as shipbuilding, docks, waterfront fortifications, flags, sails, signaling methods, naval strategy, and anchor forging. These were products of the Enlightenment - attempts to categorize and collect all knowledge. As such, Pancoucke’s Encyclopédie Méthodique is an up to date compendium of everything that was known about marine technology in 1780. It is of great historical value. This set is in brilliant condition, with pages crisp. clean and untrimmed, and engravings sharp and clean, with no foxing or offsetting. Bound in 19th century half calf over marbled boards.

Parliament debated the issue of trade with the former colonies. Some argued that restricting trade with America was wasteful, and that if trade were restricted neither party would benefit. Others, still angry about the Revolution, argued against a commercial treaty with the former colonists. Lord Sheffield was a British MP. In his 1783 pamphlet, Observations on the Commerce of the American States, he argued that Britain could trade with America without signing a treaty and making any concessions. Parliament voted to increase exports to America, while at the same time holding American imports to a minimum. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Proposal for Country Naval Free Schools, to be Built on Waste Lands. Giving such Effectual Instructions to Poor Boys as may Nurse them for the Sea Service. Teaching Them Also to Cultivate the Earth

(London, 1783). (London, 1783). Eight engraved b/w plates (five double page, two folding), an engraved folding table, and two engraved vignettes (one on the title page and the other on the first page of the dedication). Folio. iv, (1), x-xxii (lacking pp. v-viii, as do all known copies), (2), 90, (4), 91-112, (engraved title page for Songs), (blank), 115-120, 120*, (1), 121-141, (blank), 47 pp. of engraved music scores, (three blank pages), engraved title, (blank), v, (blank), (2), 67 pp. Hanway was an eccentric British merchant and a tireless worker for the betterment of mankind. Probably his most lasting contribution to society is the umbrella, which he is said to have popularized. His most important contemporary contribution was the Marine Society, an institution which taught young Britons to be sailors and outfitted them for sea. According to the DNB this institution sent nearly 5,500 boys into the Royal Navy between 1756 and 1762. Hanway summarizes his ideas in the present work, which was published just a few years before his death. In it he proposes a school for underprivileged youngsters, where they could learn farming and other trades. As a result the book concerns itself equally with farming, education and maritime matters. Its main goal, however, was to train boys to be seamen, and for this purpose a realistic replica of a man of war was to be erected on dry land. The book is notable for its large folding plates of a first rate man of war, and for forty-eight engraved plates of music, intended for “moral and instructive amusement.” In addition to the Proposal, the book contains Songs, and Moral Advice for Students, each with its own engraved title. See DNB vol. XXIV, p. 312. Adams and Waters, 1981. A near fine copy in twentieth century half calf in contemporary style with six raised bands, vellum corners and red leather label.
