        Troisieme Voyage de Cook

Paris: Pissot and Laporte, 1782. Octavo, engraved folding frontispiece and map; preliminary leaves a little thumbed, old paper repair to final leaf, a good copy in gilt quarter calf retaining original boards (backstrip faithfully renewed in period style). First French printing of the discovery of Hawaii. First French edition of this important alternative account of Cook's third voyage. John Rickman was a lieutenant on the voyage: his anonymously published account first appeared in English in 1781; in the same year Zimmermann's narrative was also published, in French and German. It is not certain whether Rickman or Zimmermann was the first to appear in print, and thus to be responsible for the first description of the third voyage and the discovery of Hawaii to be published.Rickman's description of the voyage, which predates the official account by three years, differs from it in many respects - particularly regarding the death of Cook, for which this is a prime source. The engraved frontispiece is closely based on the London edition's engraving of Cook's death at Kealakekua Bay, which was the first representation of Hawaii to appear in print. This is an example of the second state identified by Forbes with a colophon identifying the printer.

Beyträge zur Bestimmung des Alters unserer Erde, und ihrer Bewohner der Menschen

Joseph Herold, Wien 1782 - 8vo. 472 pp. Contemporary grey cardboard. ---- First Edition, very scarce. GÜSSMANN, Franz (1741-1806), a Jesuit physician in Lemberg and Professor of Natural History at University of Vienna, published a couple of interesting books on astronomical and mineralogical themes. He had been the first to suggest (in 1785) that meteorites actually fell from the sky. He was supported in this hypothesis by the German scientist Franz Chladni (1756-1827), but it was nevertheless well over 100 years before the theory was finally accepted, following the impact of the Tunguska metorite in 1908. This work deals with creation and the age of the earth and its inhabitants. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Geographical Magazine; or, a New, Copious, Compleat, and Universal System of Geography Containing: An accurate and entertaining Account and Description of the several Continents, Islands, Peninsulas, Isthmuses, Capes, Promontories, Lakes, Rivers, Seas, Oceans, Gulphs, and Bays, of Asia, Africa, Europe, and America; Divided into Empires, Kingdoms, State

London: Printed for Harrison and Co., 1782. lxiv, 772p., printed on mouldmade paper throughout, copper-engraved maps and plates (these struck on slightly heavier paperstock and in quite good condition), title page is rubricated. Hardbound in polished calf boards with leather labels gilt and raised bands, all edges tinted; the first edition. A sound copy with one major cosmetic flaw, that head and tail have been reinforced with old inch-wide brown adhesive tape: holding rather well in fact, and, because the tape is the right shade of brown, not too very startling. Bound in a well-tanned hide: extremities show a little card and a lot of abrasion, half the top rim is gone (an eighth inch deep, revealing one of the cords (or a substantial headband), labels are dim but easily legible. Hinges are strong pace a mild crack to front hinge, joints not split (we didn't peek under the tape), endsheets appear intact, there are no blanks but no sign of any removals; a cleanly copy, the only marks of any kind are a bookseller's penciled paragraph on front free endpaper. Endsheet margins are toned (binder's paste creep), foredge foxed with some migration, occasional foxing throughout the textblock and inserted maps and plates. Paperstock is mildly waved, an effect common with fascicles of mouldmade stock . None of the folded maps appear mis-folded; one, the East Indies, is started a sixteenth of an inch and has been strengthened with two inches of old document tape. Every plate and map is foxed to some extent, few egregiously (pp.733-744 the worst); and --not least-- the images show off the copperplate engraver's art to good advantage. Eight folded maps include New map of the world excluding all modern discoveries; New map of world in three sections; New map of Asia; New map of Turky in Asia; New map of Persia; New map of East Indies; New map of China; New map of Africa. Twenty-six full-page plates including frontispiece; three full-page maps. A good copy.

The present work is a German translation of the never published Latin text. The translation is by B.F. Hummel with annotations by Messerschmidt. Again the never used 17th century plates are used.         A Collection of Poems

London - J. Dodsley, 1782 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Rebacked with leather spines and the original calf leatherboards laid down. Complete in six volumes and illustrated with engraved vignettes to title pages, head and tailpieces and some sheet music to the rear of volume IV. A charming anthology of poems. An important set in very good condition. Robert Dodsley (1703 - September 23, 1764) was an English bookseller and miscellaneous writer. He was born near Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, where his father was master of the free school. He is said to have been apprenticed to a stocking-weaver in Mansfield, from whom he ran away, going into service as a footman. In 1729 Dodsley published his first work, Servitude: a Poem written by a Footman, with a preface and postscript ascribed to Daniel Defoe; and a collection of short poems, A Muse in Livery, or the Footman's Miscellany, was published by subscription in 1732, Dodsley's patrons comprising many persons of high rank. This was followed by a satirical farce called The Toyshop (Covent Garden, 1735), in which the toymaker indulges in moral observations on his wares, a hint which was probably taken from Thomas Randolph's Conceited Pedlar. The profits accruing from the sale of his works enabled Dodsley to establish himself with the help of his friends--Alexander Pope lent him 100--as a bookseller at the Tully's Head in Pall Mall in 1735. Dodsley is, however, best known as the editor of two collections: Select Collection of Old Plays (12 vols. , 1744; 2nd edition with notes by Isaac Reed, 12 vols. , 1780; 4th edition, by William Carew Hazlitt, 1874-1876, 15 vols. ); and A collection of Poems by Several Hands (1748, 3 vols. ), which passed through many editions. In 1737 his King and the Miller of Mansfield, a dramatic tale of King Henry II, was produced at Drury Lane, and received with much applause; the sequel, Sir John Cockle at Court, a farce, appeared in 1738. Condition: The bindings are tight and firm and all covers are firmly attached. There is some minor wear tot he extremities, particularly tot he boards which are rubbed to the edges and bumped to the corners with some slight loss. Internally the books are generally clean and bright throughout apart from somemild spotting in places. There is an ownership plate to the front pastedown of each volume..

CECILIA, OR MEMOIRS OF AN HEIRESS

1782 - [BURNEY, Frances]. CECILIA, OR MEMOIRS OF AN HEIRESS. By the author of Evelina. In five volumes. London: Printed for T. Payne and Son at the Mews-Gate, and T. Cadell in the Strand, 1782. First edition. Five 12mo. volumes. [ii],293;263;365;328;398 pp. Worn contemporary bindings of quarter calf with marbled sides, decorative rules gilt-stamped to spines. Armorial bookplate of Thomas Philip Earl de Grey (1781-1859) in all volumes. In general, spines have darkened and are flaking in places; gilt- stamped spine numerals have dulled so that only one is still readable; and, only one volume retains its gilt-stamped black label on spine. In particular, the backstrip of Vol. 1 has a vertical split near the center, a chip at the crown, and has been glued down; its top board is nearly off and is attached by the sewing cords. Upper joints of Vols. 2 & 3 are starting. Text leaves show intermittent light foxing but are generally clean. One signature (B) in Vol. 2 is slightly sprung at the bottom. In Vol. 4, one leaf (E2, p. 99-100) is missing the bottom fore-corner (but all text is intact) and a few leaves in one signature (L) have a small puncture at the inner margin. One leaf (E7) in Vol. 5 has short closed tear in margin. The bindings are fragile but the bookblocks and text leaves are better than very good. (CBEL, ii, p. 527). Cecilia was Burney's second novel to be published anonymously and, like Evelina, it was both a critical and popular success. Among her contemporary admirers were Dr. Johnson, Edmund Burke, and Joshua Ryenolds. Her accute social observations and the touches of light comedy in her early work were a model for the succeeding generation of female writers, notably Maria Edgeworth and Jane Austen. It was in the concluding pages of Cecilia that Austen found the title of her first novel, Pride and Prejudice. (DNB).

        Tab LXII Gladus Aeglefinus

      - A very detailed hand colored copperplate engraving of a fish by Marcus Elieser Bloch from his series "Ichtyologie, ou Histoire Naturelle, Generale et Particuliere des Poissons", published in Berlin: 1782-85; and Paris: 1785-97. Some of these prints were embellished with silver and gold . This print measures approximately 11” x 18 1/4". Bloch’s ambitious work is the most famous, and certainly the most remarkable of all books on fish. Published in twelve volumes, each of the 432 hand-colored illustrations is identified in several languages. Many of the plates bear dedications to the patrons who paid to have a particular plate engraved and included in the collection. Bloch made every effort to be comprehensive in this study, searching out species from “the four corners of the globe.” He attributes his success in this undertaking to the help of many individuals, including the Emperor Frederick the Great, who ordered all of his regional finance departments to send Bloch “.all the types of fish of their provinces and to include instructive remarks.” Bloch’s introduction goes on to thank numerous individuals for the fish that they sent him from Denmark, England, Guinea, Surinam, New York, the Malabar coast in India, and other locations. Bloch’s monumental work reflects the growing interest in fishing as a leisure activity in the 18th century. But the lavishness and sheer magnitude of this work transcend mere trend to reveal an artist who was passionately involved with his subject matter. The silver and gold touches Bloch employed to mimic the reflective qualities of fish scales lend a dramatic sparkle to many of these impressive and richly colored images. Bloch’s Ichthyologie is a highly important work, and one of the most engaging of all 18th-century natural history works. Overall this print is in very good condition with some light foxing and staining.

Lord Kames's weak part is writing. Some write above their parts, some under them. Lord Kames writes much worse than one should expect from his conversation." One of Kames's 20th-century biographers was more enthusiastic about the work: William Lehmann in 1971 described it as a "most fascinating piece," adding "it is interesting for its insight into child psychology and advanced educational method.and even more, for what it reveals of Kames the man. Perhaps nothing he ever wrote reveals more of his personality, his understanding of human nature, his religious feelings, his concern for education." Zachs, The First John Murray (1998), 309.
