Tit.). - Holz./Boh. I, 7478. (Vgl. dazu Czeike I, 403f.). - [FEZER, Johann Jakob]. Ladislaus Szekely schwere Veruntreuung vorgeworfen wurde, in voller Breite publizistisch und literarisch auszuschlachten versuchte. "...die Szekely-Broschüre Fezers (wird) eines der wichtigsten Dokumente der Oppositionsliteratur des josephinischen Jahrzehnts" (Vgl. dazu. Bodi, Tauwetter in Wien. Ss. 283-288). - [PAULSEN, Nikolaus]. Bordelle sind in Wien nothwendig. Herr Hofrat von Sonnenfels mag dagegen auf seinem Katheder predigen, was er will. Ohne Ort [Wien], ohne Vlg. 1786. 31(1) S.       Madrid, Joachin Ibarra, 1782. - (1 l.), 34 pp. 4°, disbound. Very minor soiling to first and last leaves. In fine condition. ---- FIRST EDITION of a work in verse that earned a prize from the Real Academia Española in 1782. Forner y Sagarra (1756-1797), a satirist and literary critic, was notorious for such works as @El asno erudito, in which he attacked Iriarte's insensitive ear and pedestrian imagination. His satires became so harsh that three years after the @Sátira appeared he was forbidden to publish any more works in the genre. Ward notes: "Forner concludes that the Spanish language is not actually dead, but merely swooning from a loss of blood" (@Oxford Companion to Spanish Literature p. 216).---- Palau 93673.         HISTORY OF THE DECLINE AND FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE

      London: for W. Strahan and T. Cadell, 1782-88. 6 volumes. AN IMPORTANT COPY. Volumes 1-3 are very early issues, volumes 4-6 are first issues of the first editions. A COPY WITH VERY FINE PROVENANCE having come from the library of Mr. Justice Day and subsequently from the library of The Honorable Michael Foot, renown member of the British House of Commons and one of the most important English politicians of the last century. Mr. Foot&#146;s ownership signature is found on the verso of the front free-fly. The date of the signature is also affixed in his hand--May 1977, when he was leader of the House of Commons and deputy leader of the party. With an engraved portrait frontispiece and 3 engraved maps, two of which are quite large and folding. With all half-titles. Large 4to, in very fine contemporary bindings of crushed full green morocco, the covers framed with gilt rules and with gilt ruled edges, the spines with handsome double-gilt rules on flat bands, one compartment titled in gilt letters, a second with volume numbers in gilt, with beautifully marbled endpapers and free-flys. With engraved bookplate of Mr. Justice Day, most likely Justice Robert Day (1746-1841), Member of the Grand Jury, who had helped to obtain a free Parliament in Ireland, and Unionist proponent of the Kerry Declaration. This set of Gibbon&#146;s great work was subsequently owned by Michael Foot who became Lord President of the Council and leader of the House of Commons when James Callaghan took over leadership of the British Labor Party. <br> Mr. Foot led the left-wing opposition to Harold Wilson but in 1974 joined the government as secretary of state for employment. When Wilson retired in 1976, Mr. Foot became deputy leader of the party and leader of the House of Commons. &#147;I have been on the left of the party since I joined it in about 1934, and I have not seen much reason for altering,&#148; he said in 1976. After the disastrous 1983 election, he returned to the back benches and retired in 1992. <br> As much a man of letters as a politician &#151; The Times of London once described his writing as &#147;neat, economical and muscular&#148; &#151; he wrote many books, including a two-volume biography of Mr. Bevan, &#147;Another Heart and Other Pulses: The Alternative to the Thatcher Society&#148; (1984), &#147;The Politics of Paradise: A Vindication of Byron&#148; (1988) and &#147;H.G.: The History of Mr. Wells&#148; (1995).<br> &#147;He knew &#151; as I knew, which is why I counseled him against doing it &#151; that he was letting himself into purgatory in becoming leader of the Labour Party in its darkest, grimmest hour,&#148; Mr. Kinnock said [of him]. &#147;But if he hadn&#146;t done it, I don&#146;t think Labour would have survived as a political force.&#148; vii, [13], 704; [iix], 640; [vi], 640; viii, [8]; 620; [viii], 684; [x], 646, general index, pp. A fine and very handsome set, beautifully preserved and internally still crisp and unusually clean and fresh. AN IMPORTANT AND EARLY ISSUANCE OF THE GREATEST HISTORICAL WORK EVER UNDERTAKEN, A COPY IN RARELY ENCOUNTERED &#147;PRESENTATION&#148; BINDINGS OF FULL GREEN DELUXE CONTEMPORARY MOROCCO AND A COPY WITH FINE PROVENANCE. Volumes four through six are first editions, the first three volumes being very early printings. As the first volume was printed in a first edition of only 1000 copies (the original plan was for only 500), it is rare to find complete sets of first editions. The success of the work was immediate. "I am at a loss," Gibbon wrote, "how to describe the success of the work without betraying the vanity of the writer. The first impression was exhausted in a few days; a second and third edition were scarcely adequate to the demand, and the bookseller&#39;s property was twice invaded by the pyrates of Dublin. My book was on every table, and almost on every toilette...." Publication of this grand work placed Gibbon at the "very head of the literary tribe" in Europe, according to Adam Smith.<br> "For twenty-two years Gibbon was a prodigy of steady and arduous application. His investigations extended over almost the whole range of intellectual activity for nearly fifteen-hundred years. And so thorough were his methods that the laborious investigations of German scholarship, the keen criticisms of theological zeal, and the steady researches of (two) centuries have brought to light very few important errors in the results of his labors. But it is not merely the learning of his work, learned as it is, that gives it character as a history. It is also that ingenious skill by which the vast erudition, the boundless range, the infinite variety, and the gorgeous magnificence of the details are all wrought together in a symmetrical whole. It is still entitled to be esteemed as the greatest historical work ever written" (Adams, Manual of Historical Literature, pp. 146-147).<br> &#145;Justice Robert Day (1746-1841) was the outstanding politico-judicial figure of Kerry at the turn of the nineteenth century. Born at Lohercannon, outside Tralee, he was the outstanding Dublin Kerryman of his day. Day was a member of the pre-Union Irish Parliament and at the same time the popular judge of the Dublin county court at Kilmainham. From there he was raised to the King&#146;s Bench (Ireland) in early 1798 where he served to early 1819. He lived at Loughlinstown House. He was principal trustee of the Denny estate which included the town of Tralee.<br> Day&#146;s contemporary fame rested on a series of anti-revolutionary Charges which were published in the press and appeared later in volume form. They confirm his reputation for great erudition and humanity on the Irish country assize circuits and in the Dublin courts. (See Kerry&#146;s History)<br> ,Michael Foot, FRSL, PC (23 July 1913 &#150; 3 March 2010) was a British Labour Party politician, journalist and author, and a Member of Parliament (MP) from 1945 to 1955 and from 1960 until 1992. He was deputy leader of the Labour Party from 1976 to 1980, and later became the Leader of the Opposition from 1980 to 1983.<br> Associated with the Labour left for most of his career, he was a supporter of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and British withdrawal from the European Economic Community. He was first promoted to Cabinet as Employment Secretary under Harold Wilson in 1974, and later served as Leader of the House of Commons under James Callaghan. A passionate orator, he was Labour leader at the 1983 general election.<br> His parallel career as a journalist included appointments as editor of Tribune, on several occasions, and the Evening Standard newspaper. Among the books he authored are Guilty Men (an attack on Neville Chamberlain and others for the policy of appeasement), a biography of Jonathan Swift (The Pen and the Sword, 1957) and a biography of Aneurin Bevan.&#146;

        Rinaldo Battles a Woman

      Paris 1782 - This print is after one of eleven paintings in the royal palace at Turin originally completed in 1733 by the French painter better known as Carle Vanloo (1705-1765). (Sometimes he signed his name "Charles Vanlo," as in this print.) The paintings illustrate the story of Armida, Rinaldo, Erminia and Tancred, characters who first appeared in an epic poem called Jerusalem Delivered by the Italian poet Torquato Tasso (1544-95), and subsequently became popular characters in operas, poems and paintings. Rinaldo and Tancred are knights on the first of the Christian Crusades, Armida is an enchantress and their adversary, and Erminia is the daughter of a former Saracen king who falls in love with Tancred. In this scene, Rinaldo battles a woman armed with a spear. Generally very good, with only minimal toning, wear, soft creases, and short marginal tears. To view details, contact us.

        Reflexiones imparciales sobre la humanidad de los Españoles en las Indias, contra los pretendidos filósofos y políticos. Para ilustrar las historias de MM Raynal y Robertson

      Joachin Ibarra, Madrid 1782 - lii+315 pages. Octavo (8" x 5 3/4") bound in full leather with gilt lettering to spine. Translated with notes by Pedro Varela y Ulloa. (Palau 196692.) First Spanish edition. A text that engaged the well-studied debates about the natural history of the Americas and Spain&#146;s colonial history. In 1780, in Venice, Juan Nuix published Riflessioni imparziali supra l'umanita degli spagnuoli nell' Indie contro i pretersi filosofi e politici. Nuix, a Catalan living in Italy since the expulsion of the Jesuits, wrote the book to defend Spanish colonialism and historiography against the attacks of Robertson and Raynal. It sailed by the censors in the Council of the Indies, and two separate translations appeared in succession, one in 1782, edited by a member of the Royal Council, Pedro Varela y Ulloa, and another in 1783, by Joseph Nuix, Juan's brother. The Spanish edition sponsored by the crown opened with an essay by Varela y Ulloa, in which he first offered a searing Critique of traditional forms of colonialism, not unlike that put forth by Raynal. After describing military campaigns in foreign lands, from Alexander the Great to Genghis Kahn, as butcheries, Varela y Ulloa went on to claim that the Spanish colonialism was unique. The crimes attributed to Spain in the Indies had been committed by private individuals, who did not represent the nation as a whole, and who had acted as they did while surrounded by hungry cannibals. Moreover, compared with the atrocities committed by other European colonial powers, the actions of the Spaniards looked like misdemeanors. Varela y Ulloa's effort to portray Spanish colonialism as unique benign captured the essence of Nuix's thesis well. Nuix's defense of the record of Spanish colonialism opened with passages that sought to bolster his credibility by stressing that he was a Catalan, and that Catalans had not really participated in the Spanish colonization of the Indies, so that he could not be accused of being partisan. He then articulated a five-pronged defense of Castilian colonial behavior in America, seeking to demonstrate the unreliability of the sources used by Robertson and Raynal, and of their interpretations. Nuix First set out to prove that charges of Spanish cruelty to Amerindians were exaggerations, originally put into circulation by writers such as Las Casas, whose reports on the destruction of the Indies were at the root of most foreign criticisms of Spain. According to Nuix, Las Casas was of Flemish origin, which explained why he had sought to undermine Spain. Las Casas also often contradicted himself, Nuix argued no impartial jury could trust such "an inept" witness. Foreign historians who had echoed Las Casas's allegations were not credible either, not Robertson, whose moderation had prompted him to dismiss Las Casas. Robertson had selected and reinterpreted the testimony of Spanish witnesses when recounting various colonial massacres. Instead of quoting them, moreover, Robertson had manipulated the testimony of witnesses to depict the Amerindians as passive victims of Spanish cruelty. History was not a matter of interpretation, however, but of faithfully presenting the testimony of witnesses, and in that respect, Robertson lacked credibility. In order to prove that Spaniards in America had not behaved like greedy barbarians, Nuix argued that the alleged depopulation caused by the Conquest was the product of factors outside human control. The infantile susceptibility of the natives to disease, for example, was why epidemics had wiped them out. The barrenness of the Americas and the idleness of the originally small number of natives had moved the conquerors to create economies based on mining and large estates. Such economies along with the foreign monopoly on colonial trade, not Spanish cruelty and greed, Nuix contended, were responsible for having slowed both markets and population growth.       - Paris, Dugour et Durand, An VII. 2 volumes in-8 pleine basane fauve marbrée du temps, dos lisses ornés de fleurons et roulettes dorés, pièces de titre et tomaisons rouges, (2ff+ft+t+X+478pp+1f),(1f+ft+452pp+1f). Bien complet des 3 cartes et 5 planches dépliantes dont un tableau. Le dos des reliures a été proprement restauré (dorures partiellement effacées et fente infime à un mors), quelques rares rousseurs au papier, malgré cela, l'ensemble est propre, dans sa reliure, intérieur très blanc, gravures superbes.Volney vint à Paris pour étudier la médecine mais se livra de préférence à des travaux d'érudition. En 1782 il voyagea en Orient, apprenant l'arabe, parcourant la Syrie et l'Egypte pendant 4 ans. A son retour il en publia la relation qui eut un grand retentissement. Après une carrière politique il se livra surtout à ses travaux de philologue et d'orientaliste; il chercha à simplifier les écritures de langues orientales. La présente édition est considérablement augmentée. (EO en 1857). Par ailleurs les 2 volumes sont truffés de notes écrites à l&#146;encre ancienne et provenant d&#146;un amateur éclairé et bon connaisseur du sujet; en effet, elles sont loin d&#146;être anodines et apportent des précisions au texte; elles sont regroupées sur les pages de gardes ou bien proprement inscrites dans les marges.

The author, a native of Tomar (1739-1796), wrote of a number of biographical works, the present one being his most important and most interesting. Luís de Loureiro was a notable Portuguese captain who fought in Morocco against the Moors for over 40 years. He appeared for the first time in Morocco in 1510, serving under Nuno Fernandes de Ataíde. He was at the seige of Safim in December of that year. In 1511 he was Adaíl of that North African city. In 1515 he took part in an expedition to Mamora, and in the following year was among the defenders of Arzila during a seige by the King of Fez. In 1534 he obtained his first captaincy. After a brief rest in Portugal, he returned to Morocco in 1537 as governor of Mazagão. D. João III decided to abandon some of the Portuguese forts in Morocco and concentrate his forces at Mazagão, where Luís de Loureiro remained until 1548. He died fighting near Tanger in 1553.The present work is a crucial source for the history of the Portuguese in Morocco during the first half of the sixteenth century. It contains transcriptions of a number of letters written from this theater of warfare to the Portuguese king.---- Innocêncio V, 194 (calling this the author's most important work): "Todos as obras d'este nosso biographo são pouco vulgares no mercado, talvez porque d'ellas se imprimissem oucos exemplares."         Salle De Spectacle De Bordeaux.

      Paris: Esprit, at the Author's Expense, 1782. - large folio. pp. 1 p.l., 10, [2]. engraved dedication & 22 engraved plates (1 double-page). old half calf over marbled bds., rebacked & recornered (some foxing mainly affecting margins, frontis. creased, 3-inch waterstain affecting lower edge of several plates). First Edition of this illustrated description of one the grandest of European theatres, constructed by Louis between 1773 and 1780. The plates include two perspective views of the interior and one of the main entrance, and several plans and sections, the last plate providing a comparative view of the plans of fourteen other theatres including Covent Garden, London, Versailles, the old Paris Opera, the Comédie Française, and theatres in Berlin, Argentina, Madrid, &c. A plate of the ceiling of the theatre was separately issued. With two exceptions the plates were designed and engraved by Louis himself. "The Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux (1773-1780) is his masterpiece and a significant influence in nineteenth-century theater architecture. The elegant grand staircase and vestibule were models for Charles Garnier's Opera. The horseshoe-shaped auditorium became an exemplar for many nineteenth-century auditoriums, and the giant Corinthian colonnade running the full length of the facade was also influential.This well-produced folio is dedicated to the Duc de Richelieu, who was associated with the project.The discours préliminaire, which gives a history of the construction of the theater, was written for the education of the young architect. Its defense of the cost of the project and its many anecdotes concerning progress of the building, are interesting reading." (Millard) Berlin Kat. 2812. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        To His Excellency Genl. Washington Commander in Chief of the Armies of the United States of America. This Plan of the investment of York and Gloucester has been surveyed and laid down, and is Most humbly dedicated by his Excellency&#39;s Obedient and very humble servant, Sebastn. Bauman, Major of the New York or 2nd Regt of Artillery

      Philadelphia, 1782. A cornerstone document of our national heritage" (Nebenzahl, Atlas, p. 184.) Within three days of the British surrender on October 19, 1781, Major Sebastian Bauman, an American artillery officer, took the field and carefully surveyed the terrain and battle positions at Yorktown. A native of Germany, Bauman had emigrated to America after service in the Austrian army. During the Revolution, he served in the campaigns in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, and was in command of the artillery at West Point, before joining Washington at the siege of Yorktown. Bauman spent six days surveying the battlefield at Yorktown. His manuscript draft was quickly sent to Philadelphia where it was engraved by Robert Scot to be sold by subscription. The map was advertised in The New York Packet and the American Advertiser in March 1782: "Major Bauman of the New York, or Second Regiment of Artillery, Has Drawn a Map of the Investment of York and Gloucester, in Virginia. Shewing how those posts were besieged in form, by the allied army of America and France; the British lines of defence, and the American and French lines of approach, with part of York River, and the British ships as they then appeared sunken in it before Yorktown; and the whole encampment in its vicinity./ This Map, by desire of many gentlemen, will shortly be published in Philadelphia, in order that the public may form an idea of that memorable siege. Those gentlemen who incline to become subscribers will apply to the printer hereof; where the conditions will be shewn, and subscription money be received." This was the only detailed battle plan of Yorktown published in America. As a participant for the winning side, Bauman was able to spend more time surveying the field than the British engineers who were bottled up in Yorktown. Thus he was able to include an extensive area to the south of the town that does not appear on the best British plans, such as those published by Faden and Des Barres. The location of the French and American positions is necessarily more detailed and informed. As it appeared in print before the British plans, it was the first survey of the Siege of Yorktown made available to the American public. Margaret Pritchard notes that the plan was also an effective piece of propaganda: "In addition to providing substantial detailed military information, this map is also interesting for its artistic composition. Yorktown, Gloucester Point, and troop positions are confined primarily to the top half of the map. The lower half is dominated by the explanation that is embellished with ornaments of war. The shape of the scrollwork cartouche surrounding the explanation, with flags and banners that thrust upward from both sides, force the eye to the center of the image. "Here, in an open space, is the very heart of the map, &#39;The field where the British laid down their Arms&#39; . " It is this field that is omitted from all of the British battle plans of Yorktown. Bauman&#39;s plan is a legendary rarity which almost never appears on the market. Its scarcity is due to the fact that it was separately published by subscription only. Relatively few sheets were printed, and very few of those survived. Wheat & Brun locate eight institutional copies, but not one in Virginia. To these, we can add four copies known to us in private American collections. Perhaps Nebenzahl summarized the importance of the map best: "Bauman&#39;s splendid map, dedicated to General Washington, reflects his formal European training in topographical engineering. It is the only American survey of the culmination of the great struggle for independence and a cornerstone document of our national heritage." Alexander O. Vietor, The Bauman Map of the Siege of Yorktown ; Schwartz & Ehrenberg, The Mapping of America, p . 199; Degrees of Latitude, 68; Nebenzahl, A Bibliography of Printed Battle Plans of the American Revolution, 189; Nebenzahl, Atlas of the American Revolution, Map 48; Wheat & Brun, Maps and Charts Published in America Before 1800: A Bibliography, entry 541; Fite & Freeman, A Book of Old Maps , pp. 287-288; Stokes & Haskell, American Historical Prints , pp. 57-58; Virginia Magazine of History & Biography 39 (1931), reproduced opp. p. 104. Copper engraving, with original hand-colouring. "References to the British Lines" is set within a scroll in the upper right-hand corner. At lower center is a lengthy key or "Explanation" of the battlefield, which identifies and describes eighteen key locations on the battlefield. The explanation is set within a rococo frame, which in turn is enclosed by the flags of the United States and France, cannon, arms, and other spoils of battle. Some minor creases on verso from previous folding, restoration to margins beyond platemark.

Folio, (19 x 13 inches). 20 decades, each with engraved title-page, many of which are printed in color, an engraved leaf of explanation -some in Chinese characters, and an engraved table of contents, 400 fine engraved plates: comprising two suites of 200, one suite uncoloured and one with original hand-colour (the first title-page repaired, a few marginal tears). Modern half red morocco, gilt. First edition, LARGE PAPER COPY, WITH TWO SUITES OF PLATES. Considered the principal work of the physician and naturalist, Pierre Joseph Buc&#39;hoz. The magnificent plates were designed and engraved by the leading artists and engravers of the 18th century. They include Jean Baptise Desmoulins, Jac de Favanne, and Guil. De Favanne; Claude Mathieu Fessard, who engraved the plates for many books of Buchoz, C. Baquoy, Dupin fils, J. Mesnil, I. Robert, F. Lucas, Jac. Julliet. Buc&#39;hoz, who was born in Metz, was appointed physician in ordinary to Stanislaus, King of Poland, but his driving interest was in natural history and the publication of numerous books. His biographer in the &#39;Biographie Universelle&#39; states that he published over 300 volumes, including 95 large folios, in addition to a great number of papers and dissertations. He also described many new plants which Louis XV ordered to be cultivated in the Jardin du Trianon. Of special interest also is the use made for the first time of drawings of Chinese plants executed by native artists (many of the plants are signed "Peint a la Chine"), and much of Buchoz&#39;s other work also has some distinctly oriental flavor. The British Museum (Nat. Hist.) Cat.: I, 275, notes that "the plates of fossils and minerals were collected and issued in 1782 as &#39;Les dons merveilleux.de la Nature dans le regne Mineral." The sixty plates of plants were issued separately, "Collection precieuse.des fleurs.de la China"(1776?). Blunt pp.158-160 Brunet I, 1371. Graesse I, 563..

Les Confessions was published right after his death in 1778 (the second two parts of the complete four volumes was published in 1789) and initiated the genre of modern biography. The work had a huge impact on Goethe, Wordsworth and other romantic writers. The Confessions and his 'Contract Social' from 1762 stand as major texts of history. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Martin & Walter, 24441. in Edition collective, Histoire de Pontarlier, 1979. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

[Attributes: First Edition]
