Engraved title vignette and a few small engraved vignettes in text. A fine, unrestored and unmarked copy in original German binding. ----PMM 226; Norman 1197; Warda, Die Druckschriften Kants, 59. FIRST EDITION of Kant's most highly regarded work and a landmark of modern thought. " Kant's great achievement was to conclude finally the lines on which philosophical speculation had proceeded in the eighteenth century, and to open up a new and comprehensive system of dealing with the problems of philosophy ... The influence of Kant is paramount in the critical method of modern philosophy. No other thinker has been able to hold with such firmness the balance between speculative and empirical ideas. His penetrating analysis of the elements involved in synthesis, and the subjective process by which these elements are realized in the individual consciousness, demonstrated the operation of "pure reason"; and the simplicity and cogency of his arguments achieved immediate fame. Kant's achievements in other branches of philosophy were equally distinguished and fruitful... His methods... dominated western philosophical thought throughout the nineteenth c … [Click Below for Full Description]

KANT, Immanuel
Riga: Johann Friedrich Hartknoch, 1781. First edition. Very Good +/none. Kant's Masterpiece: Arguably the Most Important Philosophical Work in Modern Times KANT, Immanuel. Critik der reinen Vernunft (Critique of Pure Reason), Johann Friedrich Hartknoch, Riga, 1781. 1 blank leaf + TP + 2 leaves = Dedication + 8 leaves = Vorrede + 1 leaf = Inhalt + [1]-856 + 1 blank leaf; Octavo. First Edition [Warda 59]. Kant's masterpiece, the book that made him world-famous, and arguably the most important book of philosophy published in modern times. “Kant's great achievement was to conclude finally the line on which philosophical speculation had proceeded in the eighteenth century, and to open up a new and more comprehensive system of dealing with the problems of philosophy'” (PMM, p. 137). Having been woken from his “dogmatic slumbers” by his reading of Hume, Kant went on to effect a “Copernican” revolution in philosophy – the effects of which have not yet subsided. In a letter to Mendelssohn, dated August 18, 1873, Kant claimed that the book was the result of twelve years reflection and that the writing was “affected within four or five months, the greatest attention being paid to the substance, but less regard being had for the form and for the interests of the readers who would understand it easily.” Printing and the Mind of Man 226 CONDITION: Contemporary half calf with light brown boards. Spine with raised bands forming six compartments. Author and title in gilt on a brownish/orange label with a gilt floral design in the other five compartments. The boards are lightly wo … [Click Below for Full Description]

Dezauche/de l Isle, J.A. / G.
Artist: Dezauche/de l Isle JA / G; issued in: Paris; date: ca, 1781. - technic: Copper print; - colorit: colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 62,5 x 65,5; - description: Map shows Southeast Asia with India and China - vita of the artist: J. A. Dezauche was the successor to Guillaume De L'Isle and Philipe Buache. Guillaume De L isle (1626- 1757) Paris, was a French cartographer known for his popular and accurate maps of Europe and the newly explored Americas and Africa. De L isle was admitted into the French Académie Royale des Sciences, an institution financed by the French state. After that date, he signed his maps with the title of ?Géographe de l?Académie? Five years later, he moved to the Quai de l?Horloge in Paris, a true publishing hub where his business prospered. De L isle?s ascension through the ranks culminated in 1718 when he received the title of Premier Géographe du Roi. His new office consisted in teaching geography to the Dauphin, King Louis XIV?s son, a task for which he received a salary. De L sle?s reputation as a man of science probably helped .This supports the claim of the historian Mary Sponberg Pedley, who says ?once authority was established, a geographer?s name might retain enough value to support two or three generations of mapmakers? In De L isle?s case, it could be said that his accomplishments surpassed his father?s. Up to that point, he had drawn maps not only of European countries, such as Italy, Spain, Germany, Great Britain, Poland, and regions such as the Duchy of Burgundy, but he had also contributed to the empire?s claims to r … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bruder Seddag [d.i. Cagliostro, Alessandro; eig. Giuseppe Balsamo?].
Philadelphia [d.i. Freimaurer-Mus. Bayreuth, 494. VERRI, Pietro
In Milano, presso Giuseppe Marelli, 1781. Bompiani, IV, 609. In 4to (cm. 20,7); mezza pelle coeva con fregi e titoli in oro; pp. (18), 100, (4), 8 pp. non numerate dopo p. 183; 394. [He] offered detailed advice on all aspects of animal welfare, specializing at various periods in the breeding of harriers, foxhounds, and buck-hounds.
