Gamerra Giovanni de
Livorno s.e. (Gio. Tommaso Masi) 1781.  8°,  mm 208x133, sette volumi di pp. (1), 501; 528; 533; 510; 446; 413; 426; legatura coeva in piena pergamena rigida, doppio tassello al dorso, buona conservazione. Berio. Per il nome dell'A., Giovanni De Gamerra, cfr.: G. Payne and Son,, 1781. and the doctrine of an increased population in this kingdom, established by facts. To which is added an appendix. Containing Remarks on Dr. Price's Argument of a decreased Population deduced from the decreased Produce of the hereditary and temporary Excise. Octavo. Old blue wrappers to style, red speckled edges. Contemporary ownership signature to title page. Residue of former label to front cover, a few instances of mild foxing or creasing, else a very good copy. First edition. The statistician and economist John Howlett (1731-1804) published the present work in response to the demographer Richard Price's essay of 1780, which claimed that the population of England and Wales was in decline. Howlett instead argued, correctly, that the population was in fact increasing, and at a quickening pace. He calculated that the population had doubled since 1688, and that this was to the benefit of the rural poor. Howlett would go on to be a fierce defender of the economic benefits of enclosures, castigating its opponents as motivated by irrational sentiments.

VERRI, Pietro
In Milano, presso Giuseppe Marelli, 1781. Bompiani, IV, 609. In 4to (cm. 20,7); mezza pelle coeva con fregi e titoli in oro; pp. (18), 100, (4), 8 pp. non numerate dopo p. 183; 394. Fedeli Francesco detto il Maggiotto
Venezia Pietro Marcuzzi 1781 8° Pagine XXVIII + 1 tavola incisa in rame raffigurante la macchina + 1 carta bianca. Legatura coeva in carta decorata.

1781.. Engraving, handcolored, image 8 3/4 x 13 inches on sheet size 9 5/8 x 13 1/4 inches. Tight margins, mended 1/4 inch tear to right upper edge, light soiling to corners, main image clean and bright with very faint foxing barely visible, soft crease to upper right corner, . Artist initials: R.S. The print appears to have been trimmed at the bottom. Information on a copy of the print available in the collection of the American Antiquarian Society states at bottom: "London: Published as ye Act directs, Jany 17 1781 by R. Wilkinson, at No. 58 in Cornhill." Robert Wilkinson was active between circa 1780 and 1820, hence this would be one of his earliest engravings. The delicately colored print depicts Britannia positioned defiantly at the weighty end of a scale holding the Sword of Justice. In a speech bubble she states: "No one injures me with impunity." Lifted aloft on the lighter end of the scale are three opportunists: a Frenchman, Spaniard, and Dutchman crowding about a collapsed Native American woman, representing America. In a speech bubble America states: "My ingratitude is justly punished." Printed below the image is a verse that reads in part: America dup'd by a treacherous train, Now finds she's a Tool both to France and to Spain, Yet all three united can't weight down the Scale. So the Dutchman jumps in with the hope to prevail. Yet Britain will boldly their efforts withstand, and bravely defy them by Sea and by Land...etc. The piece is an excellent example from the genre of political/satirical printmaking flourishing in the late 18th century. .
