Chez Bouchard et Gravier, Rome 1781 - 422 x 279 mm. (16 5/8 x 11"). 2 p.l., 14 pp., [1] leaf. FIRST EDITION. Harmless contemporary quarter calf over tan paper boards, flat spine divided into panels with central gilt flower ornament, brown morocco label. With title page vignette and 33 HAND-COLORED PLATES OF MURALS FROM ANCIENT ROME, as called for. Cicognara 3678. Extremities somewhat worn, paper boards unevenly faded and with a dozen minor abrasions and marks, but the binding sound and inoffensive; one plate with trailing dampstain touching bottom of image, plates with just visible pale spotting (a faint peach color) as a reflection, apparently, of impurities in the paper, a minor smudge here and there, but still quite an excellent copy, the contents extremely fresh, the plates richly printed and with uneroded color, and with deep impressions of the text (printed damp, on thick, appealing paper). This is an extremely rare and, in its quiet way, an esthetically very charming work reproducing paintings that decorated the palaces, baths, and mausoleums of the Roman emperors Titus, Trajan, Hadrian, and Constantine. The subjects are Roman gods and goddesses, figures from classical mythology, and the ever-popular nymphs and putti, all of them reproduced in engravings that have been hand painted in gray, blue, and sepia tones, usually on a darker background, giving them the appearance of marble friezes. There is a text description for each numbered plate, discussing the myths or legends that inspired paintings such as "Oedipus explaining the riddle of the Sphinx" and "Birth of Adonis." We are also told what edifice each painting adorned. The coloring in very pleasing monochromatic blues, grays, or browns (with white highlights) is more than a little appealing, and the volume as a whole, especially in its original binding, is quite attractive. The book is uncommonly seen in the marketplace, perhaps because copies were broken up and the plates sold individually. No other copy appears to be advertised currently for sale, and ABPC lists nothing at auction since at least 1975. Göttingen, (Johann Christian Dieterich for) Victorius Boßiegel, 1781.

1781. 8vo. (2), 8, (III)-CXII, 136 (Arabic), 256 pp. Contemp. marbled limp boards with ms. title to spine. The final edition of the venerable Arabic grammar first published by Erpenius in 1613, the work that dominated western instruction in the Arabic language for two centuries. After re-issues (with various amendments) by Deusing (1636), Golius (1656), and Schultens (1748 and 1767), the Göttingen Biblical scholar Michaelis produced a German translation in 1771. "In the long preface [...] Erpenius's grammar is characterised as still the best one in existence for Hebrew and Arabic, and as regards any Oriental language second only to the author's father's Syriac grammar" (Smitskamp, p. 278). This second edition, published a decade later, omits the name of Erpenius: "owing to the many additions (for the greater part unneccessary according to Schnurrer) the work may now be called Michaelis' own" (Smitskamp). It was not until 1810 that Silvestre de Sacy's "Grammaire Arabe" would produce an actual advance in the field. - Binding rubbed; occasional brownstaining to interior; several old ownerships and acquisition notes to insides of covers. A good, untrimmed copy. Schnurrer p. 83f., no. 120. Smitskamp, PO 283. Fück p. 65 & cf. 119f.

Critik der reinen Vernunft. Riga, Johann Friedrich Hartknoch, 1781.

1781. 8vo (205 x 123 mm). Engraved title vignette and a few small engraved vignettes in text. Contemporary marbled paper-covered boards, flat spine with orange label lettered in gilt, edges red. Modern cloth box, orange label. One of the most influential works in the history of philosophy. In the preface to this first edition Kant explains what he means by a critique of pure reason: "I do not mean by this a critique of books and systems, but of the faculty of reason in general, in respect of all knowledge after which it may strive independently of all experience." Before Kant, it was generally held that truths of reason must be analytic, meaning that what is stated in the predicate must already be present in the subject (for example, "An intelligent man is intelligent" or "An intelligent man is a man"). In either case, the judgment is analytic because it is ascertained by analyzing the subject. It was thought that all truths of reason, or necessary truths, are of this kind: that in all of them there is a predicate that is only part of the subject of which it is asserted. If this were so, attempting to deny anything that could be known a priori (for example, "An intelligent man is not intelligent" or "An intelligent man is not a man") would involve a contradiction. It was therefore thought that the law of contradiction is sufficient to establish all a priori knowledge. 'The influence of Kant is paramount in the critical method of modern philosophy. No other thinker has been able to hold with such firmness the balance between speculative and empirical ideas. His penetrating analysis of the elements involved in synthesis, and the subjective process by which these elements are realized in the individual consciousness, demonstrated the operation of "pure reason"; and the simplicity and cogency of his arguments achieved immediate fame. Kant's achievements in other branches of philosophy were equally distinguished and fruitful [...] His methods [...] dominated western philosophical thought throughout the 19th century, as they do today' (PMM). - Provenance: Librarie Schlesinger, Vevey (bookseller's small ticket). - Some light marginal spotting, occasional light marginal browning or staining. Extremities rubbed, sides scuffed. Warda 59. Norman 1197. PMM 226.

"Irwin's report contains several additions to the observations of C. Niebuhr" (cf. Henze II, 688), and significantly more detailed maps and charts. Irwin supported Pigot, and in August he was suspended from the company's service. Early in 1777 he left India in order to seek redress in England. Irwin later published an account of his journey home, which was entitled 'A series of adventures [...]'. Eigenh. Bericht mit U. ("G. A. Bürger mpr."). Altengleichen, 16. VI. 1781.

1781. 3 SS. auf Doppelblatt. Folio.

S.l., s.n., 1781 ; in-8, broché ; VIII, 159 pp. EDITION ORIGINALE.

While Napoleon called Lloyd's military theories absurd, Antoine-Henri de Jomini, the best-known contemporary analyst of Napoleon's campaigns, credited Lloyd in his Traité de grande tactique (1803), and plagiarized much of Lloyd's work in the text. However Carl von Clausewitz, in his major work Vom Kriege (1832-7), rejected Lloyd's dogmatic approach to military operations.

[Short autograph note signed by La Pérouse].[At sea, ca. 1781-1785]. Short manuscript note in ink on a small sheet of laid paper (12 x 13.5 cm).

An exceptionally rare autograph note signed by the great French explorer La Pérouse. The extraordinary story and achievements of La Pérouse are well known, and recounted in the handsome official account of his expedition. However, because he was lost without trace mid-voyage, manuscript material relating to his life is very rare indeed. In the present note La Pérouse asks that his boat be given an impressive 286 "aunes" of canvas which is needed on board. An "aune" is an old-fashioned French measure usually translated as ell or cubit: its length could vary but the normal French/Parisian aune was about 118 cm, meaning that La Pérouse is in fact asking for about 340 metres of canvas. The sheer quantity of the request speaks to La Pérouse having written the note while in charge of a large vessel. The document is counter-signed and noted as "delivered" by one "Deletombe": it seems very likely that this is Philippe-André-Joseph de Létombe, who arrived in the United States in 1781, and was the French Consul in Boston and a correspondent of Thomas Jefferson. If this identification is correct, the note would possibly date from La Pérouse's cruising in the West Indies and along the coast to Hudson Bay in 1781 and 1782.With old folds, clearly and legibly written and docketed; in very good condition.

Contemporary gilt-tooled French calf, spines gilt extra, leather labels, gilt armorial stamping on covers. Bookplate on front pastedowns. Slight wear at hinges, else a fine set. An excellent work, one of the rarest histories of the Revolution, by a French historian. The first two parts give a brief history of the colonies, but are mainly devoted to the growing troubles from 1764 to 1775. The second two parts are devoted to the actual Revolution up to 1782. The maps depict New York, Virginia and Maryland, Pennsylvania and Delaware, the Great Lakes region, Canada, New England, the Carolinas and Georgia, and the east coast of America. Most of the plates illustrate political scenes and personages, including Washington and Franklin; the most dramatic plate, however, is an imaginary representation of the burning of New York in December 1776. Millard French 148: "the completed work is one of the most beautiful that a private person has ever produced, and it is unparalleled among the sumptuous voyage pittoresque publications". Amsterdam, 1781. [4]pp. Quarto, on a folded folio sheet. Old folds. Small loss in center of sheet, not affecting text. Strip of later paper at left edge of first leaf. Light toning and soiling. Good. In a folio-sized black half morocco and cloth clamshell case, spine gilt. Painter John Trumbull writes to his father, Connecticut governor and merchant Jonathan Trumbull, relating information about business affairs in London and some of the anti-American sentiment at work against him there. John Trumbull's skill with the pen earned him the notice of Gen. George Washington, drawing battle plans at Lexington, and Washington made him an aide-de-camp. Trumbull later served as a colonel under Horatio Gates, but retired from the army in 1777. In 1780 he traveled to Paris on business for his father, also journeying to London and the Netherlands, whence he wrote this letter. Trumbull expresses a resigned frustration over his treatment as an American in London during the American Revolution. Exactly why he thought he would be welcome, as a former rebel officer and son of a rebel colonial governor, is unclear, and the English showed remarkable restraint in just warning him out of town. He explains to his father at some length the involvement of the London counting house in anti-American politics, noting they host expatriate Loyalists on a regular basis. He writes: "Dear Sir, Before I left London, I called at Messrs. Lane Son & Frazer's counting house, to have some conversation with them on the subject of their debt; but finding none of them at home, & being oblig'd to leave the City the next morning, I wrote a few lines explaining your wish to bring the affair to a conclusive fulfillment, & assuring them that tho' the war, & consequent distress of America had not advanc'd the facility of a payment, yet if they chose to confide full powers on that head to their attorney Dr. Johnson, they might depend upon every degree of honour on your part. After having finished the letter, I was desir'd to step into the house of the elder Mr. Lane, whom I found accordingly. I told him my name and the subject on which I came to converse, and was treated as I expected rather cavalierly. I took leave therefore immediately, in the same style, telling him that he might depend upon it I was as perfectly indifferent to the business as he possibly could be. But if the house should see fit to think a little more at leisure on the subject, I had left a few lines with a direction under which they might write to me. On my arrival here I found the letter of which I enclose a copy & to which I have return'd a few lines in answer, as you will see, & which I hope will prove agreeable. "It is proper I should add a few words on the character which the house supports in the present contest, which is most inveterately anti American. Their table is attended one or two days in every week by the Refugees [i.e. Loyalists], and when some two years ago a subscription was set on foot for the relief of the American prisoners, a counter subscription 'for the purpose of enabling His Majesty to carry on the just and necessary war against his rebellious subjects in America' was put about, and among many others this house subscribed one hundred pounds. In short, every part of their conduct & language as I have been constantly inform'd, is hostile in the highest degree, and it was for this reason that I avoided calling upon them, until the whole force of Refugee vengeance had been exhausted upon me, & I had nothing more to fear."

The Earwig; or An Old Woman's Remarks on the Present Exhibition of Pictures of the Royal Academy: Preceded by a Petit Mot Pour Rire, instead of a Preface . .

London: Printed for G. Kearsly, 1781, 1781. First edition. ESTC T32385 records six copies in the British Isles and three in the US (Getty, HRC & Yale). Fine copy.. 4to, recent red quarter morocco period style by Philip Dusel, marbled paper boards, gilt rules, decorations and lettering. A satirical review of an imaginary exhibition by real artists at the Royal Academy, dedicated to Joshua Reynolds, a founder and the first president of the Academy. The anonymous author makes fun of the pretentions of the Academy and its guidelines in choosing members. In the preface, Petit Mot Pour Rire ("a small joke"), Academy founder Johann Zoffany is subject to a particularly unfriendly tale of how he acquired his fame. This is followed by the review of the fictitious paintings, with prefatory remarks on the "revolution of taste in the Polite Arts" ("the love of novelty is particularly remarkable . . .") and an addenda with an assessment of the new quarters of the Royal Academy at New Somerset House, where it moved in 1780. The author apparently was not a member of the Academy.

Considerations on the Principles of Naval Discipline, and Naval Courts-martial; In which the Doctrines lately laid down in the House of Commons upon those subjects, are examined, and the conduct of the courts-martial on Admiral Keppel and Sir Hugh Palliser, are compared

London: Printed for J. Almon and J. Debrett, 1781. First edition. [A2], B-2B4. [4], 190, [2, ad] pp. Errata leaf follows title page. 1 vols. 8vo. Uncut in later drab wrappers (chipped and torn, lower wrapper especially). Title leaf soiled with abrasion costing four letters in first line. Some old folds and minor soiling, bottom corner of last leaf crumpled. First edition. [A2], B-2B4. [4], 190, [2, ad] pp. Errata leaf follows title page. 1 vols. 8vo. Courts Martial of Keppel & Palliser, during the American Revolution. Written by Thomas Lewis O'Beirne (1748?-1823), the Anglican divine, whose first publication was the sermon he preached ("An excellent sermon preached in St. Paul's Church, New-York", NY, 1776), as chaplin in Lord Howe's fleet, at St. Paul's Chapel in New York after the disastrous fire in New York City of September 21, 1776 (probably set by Patriot arsonists). Upon his return to England in 1779, O'Beirne wrote a defense of Howe in "A Candid and Impartial Narrative of the Transactions of the Fleet …" (L., 1779), and became more and more allied with the Whig party. This is his defense of Admiral Keppel in the politically charged dispute with Sir Hugh Palliser and Lord Sandwich over their actions in the engagement with the French fleet off the coast of Brest in July, 1778. Charges and counter-charges flew over that indecisive and costly encouter, Kessel being accused "misconduct and neglect of duty" and of not having done enough to finish off the crippled French fleet. Indeed, a claim was made at the time "that had the French been defeated at the time, a diplomatic mission to America, giving them the opportunity to abandon the French treaty, would not have failed" (DNB) Palliser, on the other hand, was accused of neglecting to obey an order to come to the support of the rest of the fleet. The dispute ultimately resulted in court-martials of both men, resulting in the acquittal of each, although Palliser was censured and ruined, while Keppel refused to serve under the current Ministry. "The whole episode had severely weakened the standing of the Navy. Keppel asked not be sent to sea under the current Ministry, and so the Admiralty retired him, which led to a general resignation by his naval supporters, depriving the Navy of many able officers in the continuing war against America." - DNB The first edition of O'Beirne's account of the two court martials, although well represented in institutions, is rare on the market; and only one copy of the 2nd edition has appeared at auction over the last 30 years.

Paris: Cailleau, 1781. 24mo (binding size 98 x 60 mm). Collation: [A]8 B-I8 (nested quires, sewing between I4 and I5). 143, [1] pp. Woodcut allegorical frontispiece, title printed in red and black, 12 woodcut vignettes, rule page borders throughout. Publisher's case binding of red morocco with large green morocco panels on each cover gold-blocked with a rococo design incorporating a flowering vase, at its foot a sheath and an arrow, spine gilt, pastedowns of orange Dutch-gilt paper, gilt edges (text block inserted into binding upside down).*** A compact and informative pocket almanac, published from 1779 to 1793. Economically printed in very small types, Cailleau's almanac is packed with information on the history of the monarchy, administrative and ecclesiastical hierarchies, episcopal cities throughout Europe, upcoming events in Paris, exchange rates, courrier schedules, and so on. Even the preliminary leaves waste no space: the first and last pages, blank except for the page border, function as flyleaves, with the Table of contents on the verso (p. [2]), a half-title on p. [3], the frontispiece on p. [4] (showing Love presenting a medallion of Louis XVI to France, according to Grand-Carteret), and the title on p. [5], followed by the calendar. The monthly calendars are printed on versos each facing a page containing a paragraph on a different topic, illustrated with a vignette at top showing putti engaged in relevant activities, and followed by a list of Curiosités, consisting of processions, festivals, fairs, etc. to be held in and around Paris. The monthly topics are Religion, Writing, Eloquence, History, Natural History, Chemistry, Dance, Tragedy, the Art of Equitation, Fencing or the Art of Arms, Physics, and Watch-Making (L'Horlogerie). Following the calendar is a "Curious Glimpse of the Theatre of the Present War" (pp. 32-35), describing 14 American "provinces," as seen from French eyes, ignoring most of the Colonial divisions (e.g., la Nouvelle Ecosse ou l'Acadie, la Nouvelle Angleterre, la Floride Anglaise, la Louisiane), and including Jamaica and several parts of Canada (described as "almost as large as Europe"). Noteworthy is a perplexing description of Nouvelle Yorck, "on the Hudson, in the Isle de Mahanatan," and of which "Neuf-Yorck is the capital." Other sections and tables of interest, some printed longitudinally, include a list of 29 Academies and 7 Literary Societies in Paris and other parts of France (p. 105), and a 2-page table of public and private libraries in Paris, including the year each was founded, name of the founder, number of printed volumes, number of manuscript volumes, location and opening times. Grand-Carteret 617.
