*****. In-8.         Douglass & Aikman's Almanack and Register for the Island of Jamaica: calculated For the Year of our Lord 1782, From the Creation of the World, 5786, And of the Julian Period, 6495; being the Second after Bissextile or Leap-Year.

Kingston: Douglass & Aikman, 1781 - Octavo (149 × 91 mm). Original tan calf wallet binding, raised bands to the spine, gilt chain-link rules, date gilt in the second compartment, single chain-link panel to both boards and the flap, a pocket inside both boards. Housed in chemise in a black morocco-backed black cloth drop-back box, title gilt to smooth-polished black morocco label. Somewhat worn and a touch stained, upper joint starting at the tail, short split at the tail of the fold of the flap, internal binding a little cracked after the final leaf of the text, spine correspondingly creased and just starting, light browning, but overall a very good copy in excellent unrestored contemporary condition. 92 pages, plus 5 leaves unpaginated of currency conversion tables, the almanac proper entirely interleaved with blanks, and 34 blanks at the rear. Extremely uncommon. Printed and published by David Douglass and William Aikman, Loyalist refugees from the Revolution in America – Douglass from Charleston, Aikman from Annapolis - this almanac includes, at the conclusion of the calendar proper, on the verso of the leaf bearing a Jamaican historical chronology - a "Kalendar of Months, Sabbaths, and Holy Days, the Hebrews or Jews observe & keep, for the Years 5541 and 5542 of the Creation", with the names of the holidays and the months printed in both English and Hebrew types. This page represents one of the very earliest specimens of Hebrew type in a publication produced in the Western Hemisphere intended for the use of Jews. Judah Monis's Grammar of the Hebrew Tongue of 1735 was a textbook for the instruction of biblical students at Harvard, while the first book published in North America, set with Hebrew type intended for a Jewish readership was probably the 1816 Philadelphia-published Order of Service containing "an Acrostic hymn in Hebrew" (Singerman 262), over thirty years after this almanac. In his study of DeCordova's Reason and Faith, (Kingston: Strupar and Preston [for Subscribers] 1788) Korn calls for serious investigation "of the relative significance of the Jewish communities in the West Indies during the eighteenth century in contrast to the settlements on the North American mainland" and describes how beginning with "the 1776 Jamaica almanac published by James Fannin in Montego Bay, the compilers of such guides included a Jewish calendar, pages which listed the Holy Days, holidays, the first days of the Hebrew months, and other such details", which he sees as a clear "indication of the importance of Jewish residents in the eyes of Christian Jamaicans" ("The Haham De Cordova of Jamaica" in American Jewish Archives, November, 1966, p. 141). However, the earliest examples printed "these Jewish data in English type", the first to utilize Hebrew type was Ann Woolhead's 1779 Almanac published in Kingston - no copy traced on current library searches, but a copy was apparently formerly in the library of the American Antiquarian Society - "thenceforth, all the printers of eighteenth-century almanacs which the writer has been able to examine in the West Indies Research Library utilized Hebrew type " (p142). That Douglass and Aikman - "Printers to the King's Most Excellent Majesty" – who are described by Cave as "extraordinarily good businessmen" ("Printing in Eighteenth-century Jamaica" in The Library, September 1978, p194), should adopt this practice is clear confirmation of Korn's inference relative to the perceived importance of the Jewish community in Jamaica at this time. Almanacs are by their very nature ephemeral, a functional reference and notebook, pocket-carried for their year of currency and then most often discarded; and those produced locally for a small readership, in a climate unforgiving to books, the more so. Don Mitchell's on-line West Indian Bibliography describes all issues of Douglass & Aikman's almanacs as "rare"; BL has two copies, one for 1781 and an imperfect copy for 1783 "wanting many leaves"; OCLC locates copies of the present edition a [Attributes: First Edition]

Les Nouvelles Découvertes des Russes, entre L'Asie et L'Amerique...

Paris: Hotel de Thou, 1781. Quarto, four folding engraved maps & one folding plate; a handsome copy in contemporary French mottled calf, gilt spines, red edges. The rare French edition of this famous book on Russian exploration, with good material on Alaska, the Aleutian Islands and the Northwest Coast. Coxe, on a journey through Russia, collected, compared and translated Russian journals, collected maps at St Petersburg, consulted with authorities and included several journals 'never before given to the public', directing the 'curious and inquisitive reader' to compare them to Cook's then unpublished journals. The book is a significant source on Russian exploration and expansion into the northern Pacific, and the attempt to open trade with Alaska and the Aleutian Islands. Coxe 'also succeeded in securing additional material (for instance the narrative and maps of Krenitzin and Levashev's 'secret' expedition, the first official Russian government expedition since Bering's second expedition of 1741). He was able to secure this particular information, not widely known at the time even in Russia, from Dr. William Robertson, who in turn obtained it through his friend Dr. Rogerson, first physician to Empress Catherine II...' (Lada-Mocarski).This edition is not in Sabin, who does record another French edition, a version reduced to octavo format published in Neuchâtel in 1781. A few stains and some browning.

De generis humani varietate nativa liber. Editio altera longe auctior et emendatior.

Göttingen: Vandenhoek & Ruprecht, 1781. 2nd Edition. Hardcover. 8vo (203 x 125 mm), [6], 128 pp., including 2 engraved folding plates bound at the end. Modern papercard boards. Edges untrimmed. Internally browned, with some spotting and soiling mainly to margins. Provenance: Royal College of Surgeans in Ireland (ink stamp to title-page). Good copy. ----PMM 219 (first ed.); NLM/Blake 51; Wellcome II, p.183; Garrison-Morton 156; Norman 250 (first ed.). - The rare second edition. The first edition was a dissertation printed for private distribution only and is practically unobtainable. "Blumenbach was the founder of anthropology... he classified mankind into four races, based on selected combinations of head shape, skin colour and hair form... his famous terms 'Caucasian, Mongolian, Ethiopian, American, and Malayan' were not used until the third edition of 1795" (Garrison-M. 156).Blumenbach 'was preceded by Tyson and Linné who had prepared the ground for his studies by relating man to the order of the primates. Linné had distinguished four races of man chiefly by the color of their skin. From these premises Blumenbach was able to develop the thesis that all living races are varieties of a single species, homo sapiens, and that their differences were small compared with those between man and the nearest animal; "innumerable varieties of mankind run into each other by insensible degrees". It is not surprising therefore that Blumenbach was opposed to the practice of slavery and the then current belief in the inherent savagery of the colored races' (PMM). Very Good.

NO.OF PAGES: 91 including 44 hand color aquatint plates and 2 b &w aquatint plates covered with tissue guardsSIZE:Height: 53.5 cmWidth: 38 cmDepth: 3.2 cm'In 1781, after his younger brother Claud had been appointed administrator of Vizagapatam, Russell accompanied him to India, and in November 1785 he succeeded the Dane John Gerard Koenig as botanist to the East India Company in the Carnatic. In this capacity he made large collections of specimens and drawings of the plants, fishes, and reptiles of the country and he proposed to the governor of Madras in 1785 that the company's medical officers and others should be officially requested to collect specimens and information concerning useful plants of the various districts of India. In 1787 he drew up a preliminary memoir on the poisonous snakes of the Coromandel coast, which was printed officially at Madras ... [In 1794] he wrote the preface to the Plants of the Coast of Coromandel by William Roxburgh, a sumptuous work published at the expense of the East India Company, and one outcome of his own recommendations made ten years before. In 1796 he published on the same scale, at the cost of the company, the first fascicle of his Account of Indian Serpents in folio, with forty-six plates, forty-four of which were the product of a huge collaborative enterprise in which Russell enlisted the help of other company servants. Russell's Account also relied heavily on Indian knowledge, although he subjected local wisdom to the trial of experiment and his own observations' (ODNB). Nissen ZBI; Wood p.546.

These four examples come from a set of twelve prints that were not part of 'A Picturesque Tour' (BL).The prints show Guildhall, the centre of civic government in London, where the Lord Mayor and Sheriffs met; Mansion House, the official residence of the Lord Mayor of London, designed by the architect George Dance and finished only in 1752 after 13 years of building works; New Palace Yard; and the Royal Exchange in its second incarnation.         The Earwig; or An Old Woman's Remarks on the Present Exhibition of Pictures of the Royal Academy: Preceded by a Petit Mot Pour Rire, instead of a Preface . . .

London: Printed for G. Kearsly, 1781. 4to, recent red quarter morocco period style by Philip Dusel, marbled paper boards, gilt rules, decorations and lettering. A satirical review of an imaginary exhibition by real artists at the Royal Academy, dedicated to Joshua Reynolds, a founder and the first president of the Academy. The anonymous author makes fun of the pretentions of the Academy and its guidelines in choosing members. In the preface, Petit Mot Pour Rire ("a small joke"), Academy founder Johann Zoffany is subject to a particularly unfriendly tale of how he acquired his fame. This is followed by the review of the fictitious paintings, with prefatory remarks on the "revolution of taste in the Polite Arts" ("the love of novelty is particularly remarkable . . .") and an addenda with an assessment of the new quarters of the Royal Academy at New Somerset House, where it moved in 1780. The author apparently was not a member of the Academy. Fine copy.

Representation of the Death of Capt. Cook.

London: imprint clipped, but S.A. Cumberlege, 1 July, 1781. Engraving, 145 x 180 mm., laid paper, mounted. Early and very important representation of the death of Captain Cook: evidently based on John Webber's original painting, this engraving actually predates the more famous Bartolozzi engraving with which Webber's name is now inextricably linked. As a result, this is the earliest recorded version of the print, and seemingly the earliest public representation of the infamous scene to be based on official witness accounts. As a note in Forbes suggests, this plate was originally issued to accompany a five-page article entitled 'A Succinct Account of the Life and Voyages of Captain James Cook', printed in the Universal Magazine for June 1781 (see Forbes 38). What is fascinating about this rather naïve popular print, is that the 1781 date of publication is at least a year earlier than the earliest imprint details on any of the large format representations of the death of Captain Cook engraved after Webber's original by Bartolozzi. Indeed, this is the earliest representation of Cook's death to be based on an official accounts, although at least one fanciful version is known from a German magazine of 1780.Given that Webber was thought to have been working on the scene from 1781 at the latest, and given that he was famous for inviting any number of guests to view his sketches and see his atelier, it is apparently the case that this engraving was prepared by an artist who had access to Webber's originals. This is strongly implied in the full title of the original article in the Universal Magazine, which notes 'with an exact representation of the death of that celebrated navigator communicated by respectable authority and elegantly engraved on copper.'Although the imprint has been clipped from this copy, comparison with other examples confirms the details. S.A. Cumberlege was the successor to the printer J. Hinton and married Hinton's widow. Beddie knew copies in the Mitchell and Dixson collections, and a copy is also recorded in the collection of Nan Kivell, now held at the National Library of Australia. Early folds, trimmed to plate mark but retaining original caption, lacks publishing imprint.

        Critik der reinen Vernunft.

Riga: Johann Friedrich Hartknoch, 1781. 1st Edition. Hardcover. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 8vo (197 x 119 mm). [24], 856 pp., pp. 426-461 unpaginated. Engraved title vignette and a few small engraved vignettes in text. Contemporary blue paper-covered boards, flat spine with brown label lettered in blind, blue-sprinkled edges (boards and extremities lightly rubbed, corners little bumped and scuffed). Light browning and occasional pale, mainly marginal, spotting to text, p.19 with small stain from lamp oil. A fine, unrestored and unmarked copy in original German binding. ----PMM 226; Norman 1197; Warda, Die Druckschriften Kants, 59. FIRST EDITION of Kant's most highly regarded work and a landmark of modern thought. " Kant's great achievement was to conclude finally the lines on which philosophical speculation had proceeded in the eighteenth century, and to open up a new and comprehensive system of dealing with the problems of philosophy ... The influence of Kant is paramount in the critical method of modern philosophy. No other thinker has been able to hold with such firmness the balance between speculative and empirical ideas. His penetrating analysis of the elements involved in synthesis, and the subjective process by which these elements are realized in the individual consciousness, demonstrated the operation of "pure reason"; and the simplicity and cogency of his arguments achieved immediate fame. Kant's achievements in other branches of philosophy were equally distinguished and fruitful... His methods... dominated western philosophical thought throughout the nineteenth century as they do today" (PMM). Very Good.

Journal of Captain Cook's Last Voyage to the Pacific Ocean, on Discovery; performed in the years 1776, 1777, 1778, 1779, illustrated with cuts and a chart, shewing the tracts of the ships employed in this expedition. Faithfully narrated from the original Ms.

London: F. Newbery, 1781. Octavo, with a folding engraved frontispiece of the Death of Cook, folding map and four engraved plates (one folding); the leaf D4 cancelled as usual and replaced with four unsigned leaves; contemporary calf with a folding cloth box. First edition of the first full account in English of Cook's third voyage. This scarce and important book, though published anonymously, was conclusively shown by Judge Howay to be the work of John Rickman, a lieutenant on the voyage. Rickman's book and the German language account by Heinrich Zimmermann were both published in 1781, three years before the official account. It is not certain which of them was the first to appear in print, and thus to be the first description of the third voyage - and of Hawaii - to be published. Nonetheless, Rickman's remains the first English language account of the third voyage in print (see Howay, Zimmerman's Captain Cook, Toronto 1930).Rickman's description of the voyage differs from the official account in many respects - particularly regarding the death of Cook, for which this is a prime source. The engraved frontispiece "Representation of the Murder of Capt. Cooke at O-Why-ee" is the first representation of Hawaii in a printed book.David Forbes identifies four variant states of the book ("A" to "D"), without assigning priority. This example falls somewhere between states "A" and "B" with various identifying misprints and pagination errors of "B" but in addition having the mistaken page-numbering of 331 for 231 while the mistake of "22_" for 225, a feature of state "B", has not happened here yet, appearing as "225" and therefore presumably being "22_" about to happen! Many editions and versions of the book followed in later years, attesting to its popularity and importance. Rebacked retaining original label, endpapers preserved, a good copy preserved in a folding cloth box.

        Carte de l'Océan Pacifique...

Augsburg: Tobie Conrad Lotter, 1781. Engraved map, 465 x 490 mm., with original handcoloured outlines; mounted. The first separately-issued map to depict Hawaii: the panels of text beneath the map, in both French and German, mention the discovery of Hawaii and Cook's death. The text describes the map's origin, claiming that it is based on a map published in the Gentleman's Magazine of 1780. According to Forbes, the magazine 'published during 1780 important notices on the progress of Cook's Third Voyage, his death, and inter alia the existence of Hawaii'. The map from the Gentleman's Magazine was made by Thomas Kitchin the elder, and was published initially in July 1780 without marking the tracks of the voyage, and again in December of that year with the addition of Cook's route.Tobias Lotter (1717-1777) was an engraver and publisher who married into the long-established and respected map-making firm of Seutter of Vienna and Augsburg. His handsome map, with text in both French and German, shows the tracks of Cook and Clerke from Hawaii to the Northwest Coast of America and on to Kamchatka. It also shows Russian and Spanish routes in the Pacific.Lotter's map, and Kitchin's on which his was based, predated the first "official" map to show Hawaii which appeared with the official account of the voyage published in 1784. A chart showing Cook's discoveries in Hawaii did appear in John Rickman's surreptitious account of 1781, but it was the appearance of the official account of Cook's third voyage which resulted in a flood of maps delineating Cook's tracks and drawing particular attention to Hawaii where the great navigator met his end. In fine condition.

S.n.. Collective edition, rare. Another edition of posthumous works appeared in the same time at Samuel Neuchatel Mowing, it differs in some points.Binding full glossy blond calf. back with nerves decorated. part of title and volume number in red morocco. Volume X, released in 1789 has a significantly different binding, still glossy golden calf with a triple framing net on the dishes. Some bumped corners and minimal defects. Very nice copy. This collective editing was complete collection of the works of Rousseau, but ahead of the multiple editions of Rousseau, it is problematic. It includes dialogues (Rousseau Judge of Jean-Jacques, Confessions (1782 VI books, as a result of M. de Malesherbes Covers) and later confessions (1789, Volume X) and Reveries of the Solitary Walker after the first part of the Confessions. It is unclear whether or not this issue before editing in-4 with figures, but it seems beforehand, since the first volume in 1781, and the in-4 edition begins in 1782. It is possible that this is the first collected edition of the Confessions, but nothing attests. It is also necessary to determine whether the collective original edition is the first original edition of the Confessions, or whether to take account separate edition 8vo, some bibliographers agreeing on the fact that a group can not be an original despite the prior art. In addition to these major works, this edition contains multiple rooms including a selected correspondence, Emile and Sophie , Love Stories Milord Edouard Bomston, The reckless engagement (theater), the translation of The History of Tacitus, The essay on modern music, Fragments for a dictionary of terms used in botany (different title but botanical dictionary same work). Most of these parts seems to appear here for the first time, if this edition is prior to the in-4 edition works by 1782. Note that this edition is different from the collective edition 8vo published at the same time as publishing in-4, there was also a collective edition of In-12 from 1782 to 1790 in 36 volumes in Neuchatel. In the edition of Génève 8vo, similar to editing in-4, the second part of the Confessions is 1790, it's here in 1789. In addition editions in-4 in-8 and Geneva have figures whose circulation has taken longer.Number of points tend to think that this joint issue is before all others, and contains many original, including Confessions, Dialogues, Reveries and various parts, it is in any case very rare. It is certain that this year could come to enlist the various previous editions of the works of Rousseau, including that published in 1772 by Rey in Amsterdam. S.n.

Rogerson, first physician to Empress Catherine II... ' (Lada-Mocarski).This edition is not in Sabin, who does record another French edition, a version reduced to octavo format published in Neuchâtel in 1781. A few stains and some browning.

Paris, impr. royale, 1781, fort vol in 8°, de 1f.

The Nuova Pianta by Vasi was published 18 years after the Itinerario and follows an earlier, smaller version, the Nuova Pianta di Roma (piccola) which was first published in 1667. Evidently, the later map was conceived as a companion for the Itinerario and although the numbered sites do not correspond to the text in the Itinerario, they do traverse the city in a similar manner. The map itself is modeled after Falda's 1676 Pianta di Roma which shows the city as a plan projection view with the traditional east orientation (i.e., east is at the top of the page). The matrici (copper plates) of Falda's map were subsequently revised on four different occassions, the last of which was authored by Giuseppe Vasi in 1781. It is not a map in a technical sense, it is rather a bird's eye view with more than 300 points of interest clearly identified. The view is taken from the West, so top is East, left is North and right is South. Copperplate, printed on contemporary laid paper, laid down on canvas and folded, some worm holes in the top right, otherwise in good condition. Roma Rome Frutaz, Le piante di Roma, CLXXIV; J. Maier, Giuseppe Vasi's Nuova PiaNta di Roma (1781): Cartography, prints, and power in Settecento Rome. 925 670

        Veduta di Brescia.
