Revolutionary War Autograph Pay Order Signed by Samuel Huntington while he was President of the Continental Congress

Approximately 8" x 6.5". Laid paper with one deckled edge and a partial watermark. Old folds, a little soiling, and a very faint spot to the left of the signature, but nice and near fine.Huntington writes: "Mr. Treasurer Lawrence is requested to send me by Mr. Brown on his next return to Philadelphia the one hundred pounds specie mentioned in my last letter : if not already forwarded. Sam'l. Huntington." Undated but endorsed on the verso by Jesse Brown: "Hartford March 6, 1781 Rec'd. of Pay Table Comte. on order on Treasurer for one hundred pounds in lawful silver money. Order was in [?] of Excellency Samuel Huntington Esq. and for which he is to account. Recev by Me - Jesse Brown."Huntington was a Signed of the Declaration of Independence, President of the Continental Congress from 1779-1781, and the Governor of Connecticut from 1786-1796. There is some evidence that Jesse Brown was an Continental Army post rider with a route between Philadelphia and Hartford. In one instance he was taken captive by Royalists at a public house between Fairfield and Norwalk, but later gained his freedom. Huntington correspondence isn't rare, but documents signed as President of the Continental Congress are desirable and less commonly found. .

Venezia Pietro Marcuzzi 1781 8° Pagine XXVIII + 1 tavola incisa in rame raffigurante la macchina + 1 carta bianca. Legatura coeva in carta decorata.

Charleston, MA 1781 land purchase from descendants of Tufts and Adams signed by Nathanial Gorham

July 10, 1781. 8" x 11". "Single page 8"" x 11"" land grant, partially printed and signed, on laid paper. Dated ""the Tenth day of July, In the Year of our lord One Thousand Seven Hundred + Eighty One"". For the purchase of land in ""Charlestown in County of Middlesex ... ". Signed and witnessed by Nathanial Gorham as ""Nath Gorham"". Docketed and recorded verso in the Registry of Deeds, Book 115, page 262. Age toned with light foxing and staining. Professional archival paper conservation evident to the right margin, where missing paper pieces are backed by a very fine woven mesh which is barely visible but supports the document edge.An incredibly rich document from the heart of the American Revolutionary period signed by Nathanial Gorham as a witness. Gorham was a delegate from Massachusetts to the Continental Congress, and served as the presiding officer of that body for six months. He also attended the Constitutional Convention and was one of the signers of the United States Constitution on September 17, 1787.This document involves a Charlestown, MA land sale from David Wood to Joseph Adams, son of Boston patriot Samuel Adams. The land in question had been owned by Peter Tufts, Jr., a descendent of Peter Tufts (1617 - 1700), an early colonist who came to America from England in 1638, and whose descendants lived in Boston suburbs Charlestown, Medford, Malden, and Somerville. (These were the ancestors of Charles Tufts, who donated land that became the campus of Tufts University.) This land is thus some of the most storied in New England, being from the geographical heart of the Revolutionary War movement. The land grant reads in part:""In consideration of the sum of 'Two Hundred and forty pounds Lawful silver money' me in Hand Paid before the Delivery of the said ""Joseph Adams his Heirs and Assigns forever, A certain piece of pasture Land Situate in Charlestown aforesaid and on the .... Side of a Rangeway contains Eighteen Acres more or less bounded Northerly on the Road leading .. Winter Hill, Westerly on the said Rangeway, southerly on land of Samuel Kent, Easterly partly on the Land Of Williams Tufts, and partly on the lands of Peter Tufts Jun: or however otherwise bounded""The document includes the Registry of Deeds recording information, allowing further research to be done to ascertain the exact location of the land within Charlestown, MA, one the most significant towns involved in the Revolution.       Boston, 1781. [1]pp. Single folio sheet. Slight wrinkling, some edge and fold wear. Very good. A possibly unique surviving example of a manuscript in the hand of Job Pray, captain in the Georgia State Navy during the American Revolution. According to naval historian Charles Oscar Paulin, during the Revolutionary War, "Georgia's naval armament was small and unimportant" though "Her Provincial Congress commissioned one of the first armed vessels of the Revolution." The Georgia State Navy was comprised of only a handful of vessels, most of which were destroyed by 1789. In June 1775, not long after the War broke out, the Georgia Provincial Congress commissioned an armed sloop for the purpose of seizing a British transport carrying munitions that was destined for Savannah. The next month, on the day after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the Continental Congress resolved to build four ships under the authority of the Georgia Provincial Congress. They sent Captains Job Pray and Oliver Bowen to Cape Francois and Hispaniola, respectively, to purchase armed vessels, instructing Pray to "mount on his vessel…as many guns as it would conveniently bear" - Paulin. The results of this mission are lost to history. Job Pray lived in Georgia before the start of the Revolutionary War. Shortly before the British siege of Savannah, Captain Pray took command of the captured British brigantine, the Hinchinbrook, in the Savannah River. Later, in August 1778, Pray was involved in a prisoner transfer between the American and British forces at St. Augustine. The British occupation of southern Georgia in early 1779 through the end of the War spelled doom for the Georgia State Navy. After the War, Pray was a merchant in Sunbury. He is the only known Continental Navy officer to become a member of the Georgia Society of the Cincinnati. He also served as a member of the Executive Council of Georgia at the time of his death, in April 1789. The present letter stems from Pray's time as a merchant seaman after his official involvement with the Georgia Navy, though the Revolution was still raging. At the time he writes this letter in January 1781, Pray is docked in Boston after a "tempest passage of 24 days," apparently a commercial venture for sugar, salt, and coffee, all three of which Pray mentions in his letter. It is possible, however, that he was running supplies for the southern efforts of the Continental Army, or on some other mission, clandestine or otherwise, when he penned this letter. Within the text of the letter, Pray mentions Col. Clement Biddle, who was an American Revolutionary War soldier and the Commissary General at Valley Forge under George Washington. He also refers to Capt. John Barry, widely credited as "The Father of the American Navy" (sharing that distinction with John Paul Jones and John Adams), who was appointed a captain in the Continental Navy on December 7, 1775. Barry was the first captain placed in command of a US warship commissioned for service under the Continental flag. After the war, he became America's first commissioned naval officer, at the rank of commodore, receiving his commission from President George Washington in 1797. Manuscript material from Pray is practically unheard-of, either in the market or in institutions. We find no record of any manuscript sales in either ABPC or Rare Book Hub. An author search in OCLC results in a single Job Pray estate inventory, the original of which is located at the Probate Office of the Chatham County Courthouse in Savannah. An extraordinarily rare appearance in the historical record of a minor but still important Georgia Revolutionary figure. Charles Oscar Paulin, THE NAVY OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION. (Chicago: The Burrows Brothers Company, 1906), pp.459-62.

Tratado del Socorro de los Pobres. Compuesto en Latin . . . Traducido en Castellano por el Dr. Juan de Gonzalo, Nieto, Ivarra

Valencia: La Imprenta de Benito Monfort, 1781, 1781. First edition in Spanish. Palau 371641. Some light foxing and smudges in the text; fine copy.. 4to, contemporary vellum, spine hand-lettered. Title-page vignette portrait of Juan Luis Vives. The first work in Western literature to examine the issue of urban poverty and the moral imperative of society to alleviate human suffering through public policy. Originally published in 1526 in Latin as De Subventione Pauperum, Vives' seminal work saw German, French and Italian translations in the 16th century (all rare), followed many years later by this Spanish edition. Juan Luis Vives (1492-1540) was Spanish by birth, originally from Valencia, though he lived most of his life in the Netherlands as an expatriate, after fleeing the Spanish Inquisition. He was educated in France, where he befriended Erasmus; he resided briefly at Corpus Christi College, Oxford; and he wrote several important treatises on philosophy, education, memory and perception, establishing himself as one of the leading humanist scholars of his era. When finally translated into Spanish, Tratado del Socorro de los Pobres became an central text of the Spanish Enlightenment.
