"Following the appearance of the 'Systema Entomologiae...' Fabricius returned again to Europe and a professorship at the University of Kiel, taking his collections with him. Early in 1776 he wrote Banks asking if Sparrman had brought back any new insects, hoping that he might have the opportunity to see them. Forster had of course given his insects to Solander, who distributed them to Banks, the British Museum and other collectors. It was not until the summer of 1780 that the industrious Fabricius had once more the opportunity of visiting London and seeing the specimens, but few were from New Zealand. Again, a publication was forthcomming: the 'Species Insectorum...' (1781), which included eight New Zealand species some of which might have been collected by the Forsters, but at least one having been left over from the first voyage" (J. Andrews. The Southern Ark pp. 40-41). Musgrave in his 'Bibliography of Australian entomology' lists a number of new species from New Holland. Nouvelle edition. Memoires d'Amerique. Tome Septieme.

Paris: J. G. Merigot, 1781. - Volume 7 only [of 26]. 12mo., (6 ¾ x 4 inches). (A bit toned and occasionally spotted throughout). Contemporary tan sheep, the spine in six compartments with five raised bands, gilt lettered with the general title in one, volume title in manuscript on a paper label in another (worn with minor loss to the extremities). Provenance: Dorothy Sloan, 12/11/2009, lot 323. Contemporary pen trials to front free endpaper; early ink library stamps to title page. Second and preferred edition, first published in 34 parts between 1702 and 1776. WITH "KINO'S REVOLUTIONARY MAP" (Burrus). The seventh volume (as here) of this series is one of four that deal with the Americas, and contains the immensely important map of California by Eusebio Francisco Kino (1645-1711). The map is misbound here, as it usually appears in volume 8. A Jesuit priest from what is now northern Italy, Kino set out to determine whether California was an island (as was widely thought at the time) or a peninsula. He looked at this question from a pragmatic, rather than academic, point of view, and figured it could be solved once and for all by scientific exploration. As Dorothy Sloan notes, the main impetus for Kino's curiosity was financial. The cost of transporting cattle and grain across the Gulf of California from the mainland to the Loreto mission threatened to bankrupt them. Kino knew that a land passage would greatly reduce transportation costs, and by 1698 he had discovered one. He sent his 1701 manuscript map and treatise to Spain to the Jesuit scholar, scientist, and writer, Bartolomé Alcázar. Alcázar re-drew Kino's original map and submitted it to Charles Inselin, renowned French engraver of the finest maps of his time (see Le Gear, United States Atlases V, p. 559 & Tooley's Dictionary of Mapmakers, revised edition, Vol. II, p. 410). The Jesuits first published the map in 1705, and the map appeared in print repeatedly in Europe for decades. Kino believed his evidence was sufficient to prove beyond doubt that California was a peninsula, yet the "California as an Island" myth persisted until the next century. It is hard to overstate the importance of this map. Burrus gives six major reasons for its significance: "First, it records his rediscovery (after three-quarters of a century primacy of the insular theory of California) of the true configuration of the peninsula. Secondly, this fact is established by an eyewitness. Thirdly, the land passage is at a relatively short distance from the missions and towns already founded in northwestern Mexico. Fourthly, the location of the Colorado and Gila Rivers, their confluence, their course and several of their tributaries, are established with a precision hitherto unknown. Fifthly, the recently founded Jesuit missions in Lower California are recorded cartographically for the first time. This had particular importance in view of Píccolo's 1702 printed report of the Jesuit enterprise in Lower California; inasmuch as he did not include a map of his own, editors, on reprinting his account, regularly reproduced Kino's 1701 map to accompany it. Lastly, Kino's revolutionary map was given exceptionally wide publicity in the most popular publications at the time and also in the most scientific reviews and books. Europe's most outstanding map-makers took notice of it. At first they merely mentioned the rediscovery of the peninsularity of California, often underscoring the fact that it had been made by an eyewitness; gradually the geographic reality was recognized by more and more cartographers, geographers, and historians. The insular theory had been put on trial and before a century had passed would be condemned to prudent silence if not death" (Burrus, p. 50). Additionally, Wheat notes that "Kino's map exerted a great influence on contemporary cartography, especially after the French mapmaker, Guillaume Delisle, adopted the redoubtable missionary's thes [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Monody on Major Andrè. By Miss Seward. (Author of the Elegy on Capt. Cook.) To Which Are Added Letters Addressed to Her by Major Andrè, in the Year 1769

Lichfield: Printed and Sold by J. Jackson, for the Author , 1781. Second edition (same year as the first). Small 4to. vi, 47, [1] pp. Later marbled wrappers. Fine. Adams 81-65b; Sabin 79478 . In the Fall of 1780 the young and dashing British officer, John Andrè, was arrested in civilian clothes, with a false passport, bearing reports from Benedict Arnold to General Henry Clinton on the vulnerabilities of the fort at West Point. His execution as a spy prompted great sympathy on both sides of the Atlantic. In the household of Anna Seward, the 'swan of Lichfield", where there was a close personal attachment to Andrè, a keenly felt outrage was directed at the bloodthirsty George Washington in this poem which has been reprinted innumerable times: "Remorseless Washington! the day shall come "Of deep repentance for this barb'rous doom!" For this second setting of Seward's poem, the errata were corrected, and Hayley's laudatory poem, "To Miss Seward, Impromptu," was been added at pp. v-vi. This copy is signed in ink by the Seward ("Anna Seward") at the end of the poem, on p. 28

Abhandlungen von den Nerven und ihren Krankheiten. 4 Bde.

- Tissot, one of the most celebrated physicians of his time, was the eighteenth-century advocate of the importance of temperament in mental disease. He wrote probably one of the first monographs devoted exclusively to the nervous system. Tissot discussed in great detail the problem of the relationship between complete sexual continence and psychopathology. Here he also presented a rudimentary concept of the unconscious or subconscious, and he touches an area that brings to mind Freud's theory of suppression. - Classical Works in Neurology, 51; Harms, Origins of Modern Psychiatry, 70-74; Bucher, Tissot u. sein Traite des Nerfs; Hirsch V, p.594f.; Olivier, Medecine et Sante II, p.1060ff.; Bayle & Thillay II, pp.532-34.

Wien, J. Gerold, 1781. 8vo (207 x 135mm). pp. (24), 312, (22), with 4 folding engraved plates. Contemporary boards. Antoine Gouan (1733-1821) was a famous French naturalist. He became the doyen of Linnaean taxonomy in France and was the first to introduce binary nomenclature in the country. Gouan was primarily a botanist. He however published one important work on fishes of which the first edition with text both in Latin and French was published in 1770. The present German edition is rare and was translated by Meidinger, a famous ichthyologist. "The modifications introduced into the class by Linné in the tenth edition of the Systema naturae are adapted. The genera were quite well described, and three new ones still retained in the system (Lepadogaster, Lepidopus, and Trachypterus) were established" (Gill, T.N., Smith. Miscell. Neues systematisches Conchylien-Cabinet fortgesetzet durch Johann Hieronymus Chemnitz: Fünfter Band.

Nürnberg, G.N. Raspe, 1781. 4to (290 x 225mm). pp. (24), 324, with an engraved title vignette, some engravings in the text and 34 fine handcoloured engraved plates. Contemporary half calf, richly gilt decorated spine with red and green label. The 5th volume of this large and rare iconography on shells is of particular interest as it describes and portrays many shells from New Zealand and some from Australia collected during Cook's voyages into the Pacific. In the preface Chemnitz states: "... viele dem Kenner wichtiger Conchyliologische Nachrichten aufgetrieben, auf jeder Kupferplatte einige ganz neue, äusserst seltene, auch vorzügliche Südländische, bey den Cookischen Seereisen, zuerst entdeckte Gattungen geliefert"./Below we give the pages where these shells are described (as well as portrayed). Vol. V: pp. 26, 27, 28, 36, 42, 47, 97, 100, 163, 166, 187, 207, 213, 215, 229, 230, 272, 285, 296, 321. Many of the shells come from the cabinet of Lorenz Spengler of Copenhagen (ex Museo Spengleriano). His cabinet contained many Cook related items and Spengler was a regular customer of Humprey, 'who wrote to Spengler on 15 October, 1775, apologizing for the delay in sending him shells and explaining that he needed to be on hand to take care of transactions on the return of the 'Resolution" (Andrews, The Southern Ark p. 48). /"Friederich Wilhelm Martini, a Hamburg physician, conceived the idea of publishing the first large-scale encyclopaedia of shells illustrated with hand-coloured plates. His ambition was to describe and portray every kind of shell known, an ambition virtually impossible to fulfil, as others have discovered since. No sooner was the third volume of the 'Neues Systematisches Conchylien-Cabinet' in print that its author died, in 1778. Publication was continued by Johann Hieronymus Chemnitz, a Danish clergyman who, between 1779 and 1795, added a further eight volumes" (Dance, Shells p. 24). / ///Nissen ZBI, 2722; B.M. (Nat. Hist.) The Bloomsbury Encyclopedia of Utilitarianism

Bloomsbury Academic. Hardcover. New. Hardcover. 608 pages. Dimensions: 9.3in. x 6.2in. x 1.8in.Jeremy Bentham coined the term utilitarian in 1781, but the idea of utility as a value, goal or principle in political, moral or economic life has a long and rich history. The Bloomsbury Encyclopedia of Utilitarianism captures the complex developmental history and the multi-faceted character of utilitarianism in its various contexts and forms more completely than any previous source. Studies of utilitarianism hitherto have been notably compartmentalised, focusing on utilitarian ethics, or the socio-political utilitarianism epitomized in Benthamism, or the genesis of Austrian jurisprudence, but never making these various aspects available for comparative study within a single work. The Encyclopedia includes entries on the authors and texts that are recognised as having built the tradition of utilitarian thinking, as well as on the issues and critics that have arisen at every stage of the development of that tradition. Academics and researchers in search of fresh juxtapositions of issues and arguments will welcome this unique reference work. This item ships from multiple locations. Your book may arrive from Roseburg,OR, La Vergne,TN, Momence,IL, Commerce,GA.

MONODY On MAJOR ANDRE. By Miss Seward. (Author of the Elegy on Capt. Cook.) To Which Are Added LETTERS ADDRESSED To HER By Major Andr, in the Year 1769.

Printed and Sold by J. Jackson, for the Author., Lichfield: 1781 - Seward was a prominent woman of letters in her day, having, for example, the admiration of Wordsworth & Scott, and whose disapproval of Dr. Johnson is as well chronicled as her support of young writers of the era is, perhaps, under appreciated. This title, her second published, by the 'Swan of Lichfield' [as this poet is known] is a tribute to the suitor of her friend, Honoria Sneyd [stepmother to Maria Edgeworth]; said suitor having been executed, as a courier of information from Benedict Arnold to General Clinton, during the Revolutionary War by the Americans. The work's publication reportedly "brought her an apology from General Washington." Cf. Shattock. BRITISH WOMEN WRITERS, pp. 384-85. Uncommon title; last at auction in 1996. A VG+ copy, showing minor extremity wear & evidence of some inconsequential worming @ base of spine. Later tan half-calf with marbled paper boards. Gilt title lettering to spine. 4to: 1 A3 [A4 = 1?] B - G4. 10-1/2" x 8-1/4". The Second Edition (NCBEL II, 682; Sabin 79478). SIGNED by the Author on p. 28. Tratado De Las Ocho Questiones Del Templo, Propuestas Por El Illmo Senor Duque Del Infantadgo, I Respoindidas Por El Doctor Vergara, Canonigo De Toledo [Extracted from Clarorum Hispanorum.]

Atonium De Sancha, Matriti 1781 - In Spanish. Undated, but most likely to be an extracted portion of Clarorum Hispanorum, Opuscula Selecta et Rariora tum Latina, tum Hispana, Magna ex Parte Nunc Priumum in Lucem Edita. Ano de 1548 in old pencil writing on title page. Juan de Vergara was a Spanish Humanist who was tried and imprisoned for his views during the Inquisition. The title roughly translates to: Treaty of the Eight Proposed Questions of the Temple by Illmo Sir Duke of the Infantadgo. Original marbled softcover, 94 pages. Printed on watermarked paper, with the watermark mainly obscured by the binding, but which appears to be an orb with a cross on top with perhaps three intials below - very hard to make out. The text includes Questiones de Templo de Salomon, Tabla de lo Contenido en este Tratado, Carta del Doctor Juan de Vergara A Geronymo Zurita, and Respuesta de Geronymo Zurita. Covers badly worn and chipped, with some very faint dampstaining that does not extend past the first text page, many corner folds but no significant chips or tears, almost no foxing, one area of worming throughout the book that manages to stay almost exclusively between the lines of text, the worming being one tiny spot for the last half of the book, with elongated holes in one horizontal line further forward in the book. One page has some finger smudging. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

NICE COPY. PICTURES AND MORE DETAILS ON REQUEST. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Maritime School on the Banks of the Thames, for the Education of the Sons of such Sea Officers, and others, as may be intended for the King's, the East India Company's, or the Merchants Service [caption title]

[Chelsea, England?: no publisher. circa 1780s]. Small quarto pamphlet, approximately 6.75" x 3.5". 19, [1, blank] pp., A--B[4], C1--C[ 2]. Stitched, without wrappers, later (?) paper reinforcement strip to spine. First leaf slightly dust-soiled, very good. This pamphlet serves as a continuation of a proposal first made in1777 to establish at Chelsea a naval training school for young English boys. The school was the brainchild of English philanthropist andmerchant Jonas Hanway. The objectives of the school were to train young boys for the Royal Navy, and to ensure the children of fallenofficers who had died in serving their country could receive a naval education. The details of the institution and its benefits for King, country, and character are herein outlined. Pages 13--19 record a lengthy list of subscribers; many, quite obviously, with title, status, and notable standing. Not on ESTC, COPAC, or OCLC. A variant example, in seventeen pages, held by the National Maritime Museum in England, has a similar, but variant title, and suggests a date of 1781. We suspect NMM's example chronologically preceded this present example. Other Maritime School on the Banks of the Thames pamphlets are recorded, but not with this title's wording. Additionally, they often appear to post-date this present example which is apparently unrecorded. Of the other editions, not one mentions in the caption title that the school was intended for training individuals who would then serve with the East India Company. A curious anomaly? .

Monody on Major Andrè. By Miss Seward. (Author of the Elegy on Capt. Cook.) To Which Are Added Letters Addressed to Her by Major Andrè, in the Year 1769

Lichfield: Printed and Sold by J. Jackson, for the Author , 1781 - In the Fall of 1780 the young and dashing British officer, John Andrè, was arrested in civilian clothes, with a false passport, bearing reports from Benedict Arnold to General Henry Clinton on the vulnerabilities of the fort at West Point. 28 Second edition (same year as the first). Small 4to. vi, 47, [1] pp. Later marbled wrappers. Fine.
