Critic, The

London: Printed for T. Becket, Adelphi Strand, 1781. - Everybody Has An OpinionWith First English Translation of Rousseau's "Historically Important" OperaSHERIDAN, Richard. [Bound with] The Cunning-Man, A Musical Entertainment, in Two Acts. As it is Performed at the Theatre Royal in Drury-Lane. Originally written and Composed by Mr. J.J. Rousseau. Imitated, and adapted to his original Music, by Charles Burney. The Second Edition. London: Printed for T. Becket and P.A. de Hondt, 1766.Fourth edition of The Critic, second edition of The Cunning-Man. Octavo. [10], 98; [8], 30, [1, adv.], [1, blank] pp. Engraved title page to The Critic. The Cunning-Man complete with the publisher's notice, dated Nov. 29, 1766, at the end advertising translated works by Rousseau.Contemporary quarter calf over marbled boards, expertly rebacked to style. With the bookplate of J.S. Bentley to the front paste down endpaper, and that of Thomas Merriman to the front free endpaper. A very good copy. The Critic was first performed 30 October 1779; the first edition was issued in 1781, this, the fourth edition, was issued later in the same year. The Prologue is by Richard Fitzpatrick. Another huge success for the celebrated dramatist, The Critic is " an exuberant burlesque on the problems of producing a play. The work under rehearsal by its distraught producer is 'The Spanish Armada', a ludicrous parody of the modish tragic drama of the day The action of the main play continues with undiminished vivacity to the end" (OCEL). Playwright, producer, and theater manager and owner Richard Brinsley Sheridan (1751-1816) made his reputation as a dramaturge in 1775 with The Rivals. Success followed success, celebrity ensued, and soon Sheridan bought out actor playwright, and impresario David Garrick's share in the Drury Lane Theatre and became its manager. The fabulous success of his School For Scandal gave him the wherewithal to become the sole proprietor of the Drury Lane Theatre in 1779. He was considered the true heir of Garrick, the most respected and celebrated theatrical personage of his age, and later became a MP.The Cunning-Man is Charles Burney's translation and adaptation of the libretto and songs to Rousseau's pastoral opera Le Devin du Village (The Village Soothsayer. 1752). "As with many French operas, Rousseau’s Le devin du village was first staged for the court, appearing at Fountainebleau on 18 October 1752. The work was then performed at the Paris Opéra on 1 March 1753. The historical importance of this short intermè is closely tied to its role in the famous Querelle de bouffons, a debate about the merits of French serious opera in comparison to Italian comic opera (especially Pergolesi’s La serva padrona). "Rousseau applied the principles of Italian buffo style to Le devin, showing a preference for simple melodies in his airs, and although the subject matter is typical of comic opera’s interest in paysannerie (see Grétry’s Le Huron), the use of recitative explains why Le devin appeared at the Opéra."Le devin’s popularity is evident in that it was parodied by the Comédie-Italienne and later arranged in English by Charles Burney. However, Rousseau’s outspoken nature caused problems for him at the Opéra when he wrote an indictment against French opera (titled Lettre sur la musique française) late in 1753. While Rousseau was no longer welcome at the Opéra, Le devin continued to be performed until the early nineteenth century. Berlioz famously criticized the work, though, and argued that Rameau’s music was far superior to Rousseau’s diminutive intermé" (University of North Texas Libraries). The opera became one of the most popular of its day and brought Rousseau both wealth and fame. "Dr. Charles Burney (1726-1814), organist, musical historian and minor composer was the friend of Garrick, Joshua Reynolds, Dr. Johnson, and many members

Tratado De Las Ocho Questiones Del Templo, Propuestas Por El Illmo Senor Duque Del Infantadgo, I Respoindidas Por El Doctor Vergara, Canonigo De Toledo [Extracted from Clarorum Hispanorum...]

Matriti: Atonium De Sancha. 1781. 8vo (20.5 cm x 14 cm). Segunda Impression. S Soft Cover. Fair. In Spanish. Undated, but most likely to be an extracted portion of Clarorum Hispanorum, Opuscula Selecta et Rariora tum Latina, tum Hispana, Magna ex Parte Nunc Priumum in Lucem Edita. Ano de 1548 in old pencil writing on title page. Juan de Vergara was a Spanish Humanist who was tried and imprisoned for his views during the Inquisition. The title roughly translates to: Treaty of the Eight Proposed Questions of the Temple by Illmo Sir Duke of the Infantadgo. Original marbled softcover, 94 pages. Printed on watermarked paper, with the watermark mainly obscured by the binding, but which appears to be an orb with a cross on top with perhaps three intials below - very hard to make out. The text includes Questiones de Templo de Salomon, Tabla de lo Contenido en este Tratado, Carta del Doctor Juan de Vergara A Geronymo Zurita, and Respuesta de Geronymo Zurita. Covers badly worn and chipped, with some very faint dampstaining that does not extend past the first text page, many corner folds but no significant chips or tears, almost no foxing, one area of worming throughout the book that manages to stay almost exclusively between the lines of text, the worming being one tiny spot for the last half of the book, with elongated holes in one horizontal line further forward in the book. One page has some finger smudging.

G. de l’Hospital’s analysies of the infinitesimal introdiuces in France the differential calculus and constitutes the first overall treatise on the subject. This work had an important circulation and aroused many comments. G. de l’Hospital owes the main part of this work to the Swiss physicien & mathematicien Jean Bernouli who tought him between 1691-1692 the differential calculus which had been published in 1684 by the German Philosopher Leibniz. LIVES OF THE MOST EMINENT ENGLISH POETS; With Critical Observations on Their Works.

London for C. Bathurst, et al 1781 - 4 volumes. The First London edition, first authorized edition, first separate edition. Portrait of Johnson by Joshua Reynolds as frontispiece in the first volume. 8vo, contemporary tree calf with gilt fillet lines surrounding the covers, the spines with plain calf backs. vii, 480; iii, 471; iii, 462; iii, 505. A very good, handsome and honest copy, rehinged incorporating the original spine panels and without labels, the text block clean and sound throughout. FIRST LONDON EDITION, FIRST AUTHORIZED EDITION, FIRST SEPARATE EDITION of this masterwork of literature. It took Johnson four years to write these lives, and much of their charm lies in the anecdotes and reminiscences which the author was able to provide. He spent much time in the company of men of letters and his retentive memory preserved many of the facts and criticisms which fell from their lips. The work, Johnson's last great labor, was suggested by the Martins at Edinburgh. "The first conception of the booksellers was to begin with the works of Chaucer, but that project was too vast for them, and the first author in their edition was Cowley. The diminution of the scheme is not greatly to be regretted. The poets before Cowley were not so well know to Johnson, and he had no special information on their lives" (Courtney and Smith, p. 130). PRECIS HISTORIQUE Et EXPERIMENTAL Des PHENOMENES ELECTRIQUES, Depuis L'Origine de Cette Decouverte Jusqu'a ce Jour.

Paris: 1781 - Illustrated with 9 folding copperplate engravings, depicting the divers pieces of electrical apparatus of the day (bound, at rear, out of sequence). Head- tailpieces. The author, while studying for his medical degree, attended a course of public lectures given by Abbe Nollet, the tenor of which so inspired Siguad's subsequent interest in, and investigations of, experimental science at the College Louis-le-Grand. In 1760, Siguad succeeded the Abbe Nollet in his chair at Louis-le-Grand, where, along with anatomy & physiology, he continued "those courses in experimental physics that had been taught by his famous predecessor." Siguad's "positive contributions to science were in the area of experimental technique. He is sometimes attributed with the invention of the glass insulator and the circular glass plate (to replace the glass globe) in electrical machines." This particular work written by him slanted more toward the "enlightened layman", rather than offering a rigorous technical treatise for his peers, nevertheless it does provide a significant historical summary on the subject of Electricity, as well as current thoughts of the 18th Century. In 1779, Spain joined France in aiding the Americans against the British in the Revolution; however, Spanish goals were mainly self-serving, and she particularly wished to regain Florida, lost to Britain in the Peace of 1763 which concluded the French and Indian War. With this in mind, the energetic Viceroy Bernardo de Galvez organized an expedition from Havana against the British base at Pensacola, the capital of the Province of West Florida (including the present Florida panhandle, southern Alabama and Mississippi, and Louisiana as far as the Mississippi River). The expedition set out in November 1780, but was scattered by storms and was launched again in February 1781. The Spanish secured Baton Rouge, Natchez, and Mobile before turning on Pensacola. Despite difficulty in coordination (the Spanish admiral was not under Galvez' direct command and at first refused to run the bar at Pensacola under the British guns), Galvez was able to land his forces and effect a siege, resulting in British capitulation on May 9, 1781. The loss was a major setback to the British in the South and insured that the Floridas were returned to the Spanish in the Peace of 1783. Spanish control of the Floridas was a thorn in the side of the United States until they were sold to the U.S. under the conditions of the Adams-Onìs Treaty of 1819. This account is Galvez' detailed report of the entire expedition, with the last part dated at Pensacola on May 12, 1781. Also included is the treaty of capitulation and a schedule of troops involved. Medina believed that this pamphlet was published first in Havana and later in Madrid. We recently compared two copies which we believe confirms this. While the same in pagination, and indeed with the same text per page, the line settings within each page vary considerably. One is crudely printed and looks like Spanish colonial printing; and the other, with a different type face, is much more elegantly printed. The present copy matches the latter description, which we believe to be the Madrid printing. The easy way to tell the two apart is the first (of many) different paragraph settings: on page three, the first paragraph at the top has five lines in the Havana edition and only four in the Madrid edition. Accompanied by a copy of Jose Porrua Turanzas' (editor) DIARIO DE LAS OPERACIONES CONTRA LA PLAZA DE PANZACOLA 1781. (Madrid, 1959). SABIN 26475. PALAU 96980. MEDINA (HAVANA) 68 (ref). Medina knew of only 11 earlier Buenos Aires imprints, Furlong of 19. Dated in Córdoba de Tucumán on 25 April 1781, this edict establishes norms governing the selection of priests. San Alberto discusses ten regulations: notification of the archbishop of intent to become a priest; declaration of title; qualification for those aspiring towards a Patrimonia level; qualification for those aspiring to a Capelaria title; qualification for those wishing to be ordained as Tenientes Curas; inquiry into the candidate's background (e.g. his patrimony); examination preceding ordination; age; spiritual exercises; and what @regulares must practice while they are candidates for ordination. Furlong states: "Este Edicto o Carta Circular está datado en Córdoba de Tucumán a 25 de Abril de 1781 y tiene por objeto dar normas a los que pretenden el sacerdocio. Es documento bien escrito y muy bien pensado."Fr. José Antonio de San Alberto (1727-1804), born in the Aragonese town of Fresno, professed in the Carmelite convent in Zaragoza in 1744 and was named prior of the Convent of St. Theresa in 1766. He became the doyen of Linnaean taxonomy in France and was the first to introduce binary nomenclature in the country. Gouan was primarily a botanist. He however published one important work on fishes of which the first edition with text both in Latin and French was published in 1770. The present German edition is rare and was translated by Meidinger, a famous ichthyologist. "The modifications introduced into the class by Linné in the tenth edition of the Systema naturae are adapted. The genera were quite well described, and three new ones still retained in the system (Lepadogaster, Lepidopus, and Trachypterus) were established" (Gill, T.N., Smith. Miscell. Mechios River Near the Mills--A Sketch of Mechios Mills

London 1781 - From The Atlantic Neptune. From The Atlantic Neptune .At the close of the French and Indian War, Des Barres, the most noted and skilled producer of coastal charts in late eighteenth-century England, was sent to America by the British Admiralty to survey the coasts of the Maritime Provinces. These provinces, so recently acquired from France, had never been adequately mapped, and using the most advanced hydrographic instruments available, Des Barres spent the next ten years constructing a series of charts of unparalleled accuracy and schematic beauty, of crucial importance for military maneuvers on the Northeast Coast. Ultimately the project was expanded to include the entire Atlantic and gulf coasts of North America. At the outset of the American Revolution, Des Barres was assigned the task of compiling his work -- and that of others surveying the coast and shorelines of North America -- into an atlas that would enable the British Navy and Merchant Marines to navigate safely in North American waters. Des Barres returned to England in 1774 and began to prepare his charts for publication. The collected charts appeared as the Atlantic Neptune, a magnificent work consisting of about 275 views, plans and charts, which is considered the first great marine atlas of the eastern seaboard, and by many the most splendid collection of charts ever published. Each volume was composed of charts selected for a particular purpose or mission and thus, no two sets are identical. Sheet size: 33 x 25". Inventory#: p178pmat.

[Exeter. 1781].. Broadside, 12 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches. Some creasing. Small hole, with loss to two words. Very minor foxing. Contemporary ink inscription on verso: "March & April 1781 No. 2." Overall very good. New Hampshire broadside, announcing an important constitutional convention. In January 1776, New Hampshire became the first of the thirteen colonies to adopt a constitution and create an independent commonwealth government. The 1776 constitution, however, had not been submitted to the people, and it severely limited the ability of most New Hampshire citizens to participate in the selection of their representatives. The present broadside, implicitly noting this problem, calls for the different towns and districts of the state to choose delegates to convene for the drafting of a new constitution. Numerous conflicts and amendments caused the convention to last for over two years, and the constitution was rejected by the people of the state four times before it was finally approved and put into effect in June 1784. The constitution itself greatly expanded manhood suffrage in the state, included an extensive bill of rights, and is notable as one of the earliest documents establishing the republican form of government adopted by the Framers in Philadelphia in 1787. TraitŽ de la Construction des Vaisseaux, avec des Eclaircissemens & DŽmonstrations touchant l'Ouvrage intitulee: Architectura Navalis mercatoria, &c. .

Chez R. Mallassis, Impremeur ordinaire du Roi & de la Marine. A Paris, Chez Durand, nevey, Libraire, rue Galande. Jombert, heune, Libraire, rue Dauphine, Brest 1781 - Quarto. Illustrated with 20 folding plates. . One of the most important books of the eighteenth century on ship designs. af Chapman introduced new mathematical methods of determining the center of gravity for proposed designs. He also had worked out a system of isometric views of design proposals to assist in the accurate transfer of measurements. Other chapters are devoted to calculating the ship's way through the water, i.e. resistance to contours, and appointments and methods of construction. An earlier French edition had been issued in 1779 which only had 11 of the plates. The French edition criticizes Chapman's treatise to which Chapman replied in a later edition. It should be noted that Clairbois (the translator) took many of the illustrations for his own book Encyclopedie Methodique published in 1783.Frederik Henrik af Chapman, universally acknowledged as the father of naval architecture, was born in 1721 in Gšteborg (Gothenburg) on the Swedish west coast, and died in 1808 in Karlskrona on the east coast, the son of a British Naval officer who had joined the Royal Swedish Navy in 1716, and an English mother, Susanna Colson, the daughter of a London shipwright. His studies of mathematics and physics began in Sweden and were completed in England; he also spent long periods in France, Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands and England studying naval architecture before eventually settling in Sweden where he devoted himself to naval architecture and ship building. In 1765 he took leave of absence from his work as chief naval architect for the Swedish Archipelago Fleet based at Sveaborg (off Helsinki) to devote himself for two years to Architectura navalis mercatoria. He devoted himself not only to the construction of ships but the re-bulding and re-organization of the whole system of ships building. In the short period of three years he accomplished the completion of twenty ships, ten ships of the line, and ten frigates. His system for building ships far surpassed all that existed and the majority of European naval powers adopted his system with all speed. [Polak 1605. Scott 377. Harris, F.
