        Archiv der Insectengeschichte

Heinrich Steiner und Comp. 1781-1785, Zurich and Winterthur - With 39 plates, mostly hand-colored, of insects, all finely and minutely rendered. Four parts bound in one, although title pages for six parts. While the organizational principle of this early entomological series defies coherent explanation, there are textual descriptions of the plate content easily discoverable in the vicinity of the pertinent plate, and there is some table of contents to be found herein. Bound in modern calf, with contemporary spine label preserved. Binding is tight, and while there is at times moderate foxing, most pages are clean, notwithstanding age toning, and the plates themselves are stunning. With modern endpapers sympathetic to the work and its vintage. [Attributes: First Edition]

53 fine plates on 30 sheets. 2 p.l., xxxix, 99, [4] pp. 4to, cont. Spanish green morocco, cover with gilt fillets round sides, flat spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine, characteristic Spanish marbled endpapers, a.e.g. [Madrid: en la Imprenta Real de la Gazeta, 1781]. First edition -- and a superb copy in contemporary Spanish green morocco -- of one of the most beautiful and influential of the Spanish writing books; this work and that of Palomares, published in 1776, made Spain an 18th-century center for calligraphy and fine handwriting. The calligraphic world of later eighteenth-century Spain was formed by the Palomaristas and the Anduagistas, two sides of a long-contested debate. Those supporting Palomares argued that the establishment of rules in order to make correct letter forms -- a more efficient national script -- was unnecessary because the plates contained in his book were sufficient to explain the process. On the other hand, Anduaga (1751-1822), felt that a full understanding of the rules was more important than any calligraphic samples. He was the first to introduce English letter forms into Spain, which caused further controversy. A fine and large copy, elegantly bound. This was a very popular text, with later editions and reworkings in 1791, 1793, 1795, 1805, and 1822. ❧ Becker, The Practice of Letters: the Hofer Collection of Writing Manuals 1514-1800, 143.         A General History of Connecticut, from its First Settlement under George Fenwick, Esq., to its Latest Period of Amity with Great Britain; including a Description of the Country, and many curious and interesting anecdotes. To which is added, an Appendix, wherein new and the true Sources of the present Rebellion in America are pointed out; together with the particular Part taken by the People of Connecticut in its Promotion. By a Gentleman of the Province

London: Printed for the author, 1781. First edition. Contemporary tree calf, rebacked to style. Extremities rubbed, a few short tears to front flyleaf, bookplate on free front end-paper, neat ownership signature to title, clean with wide margins, a very good copy. 8vo. Peters was the first to popularize. the term 'Blue Laws'. "An entertaining but wholly untrustworthy account of Connecticut by an exiled and embittered Tory. Fiction and fact are so run together in the narrative that their separation is well-nigh impossible. The most famous part of the book is the alleged code of New Haven laws popularly called "Blue laws," (Larned, Literature of American History, p. 88). The entry in the Church Catalogue (V. 5, pp. 2317-2319) notes: "Peters, a native of Hebron Connecticut... was a Loyalist during the Revolution. He made himself so obnoxious by his prominence and activity as such, that he was presented with a coat of tar and feathers and permitted to visit England for his health...[where he remained until 1802]. His apocryphal history of Connecticut is a remarkable tissue of misstatements and exaggerations, not to say of malicious falsehoods." Howes calls the work a "false and vicious misrepresentation." Sabin notes that the first edition is "very rare." Provenance: Illustrated bookplate of Justin George Turner (1898-1976), highly respected historian, author, and collector of Lincolniana, co-author of 'Mary Todd Lincoln: Her life and letters' and other works. Sabin 61209. Howes P262. Church 1183. Lowndes II: 472. Larned: 1006. ESTCT122416.

        Poems by a Lady.

Sold by Henry Payne 1781 - FIRST EDITION, issue with printed title-page instead of engraving (see below), browned and soiled, a few corrections in early ink, pp. [vi], 204, 4to, modern quarter blue calf, marbled boards, black morocco lettering piece, good A rare book - and this apparently a particularly rare variant - with ESTC locating four copies in three locations (BL, 2 in the Bodleian, Cornell). Worldcat adds Glasgow (though it is not in their OPAC) and Brigham Young. The descriptions of those copies call for a plate, which the scanned Bodleian copy confirms is an engraved title-page with a large oval vignette. That scan, however, as well as the pagination given by Brigham Young, also confirm that the engraved title-page is the only title-page; there is no half-title or printed version called for. This copy, on the other hand, does not have the engraved title-page but does have a printed title-page giving the same information, printed on paper that matches the rest of the text. The identity of the author appears to be wholly unknown. (ESTC T64186)

Joachin Ibarra, Madrid 1781 - 8º, 2h, XXp, 189p. " 1781
