Insgesamt sehr gutes Exemplar!

Clough Overton Virginia Land-Office Treasury Warrants with John Harvie Secretarial Signature [Overton Family/County Interest] [Daniel Boone Interest]

Richmond: Commonwealth of Virginia Land-Office, 1781. 1st Edition. Other Other. Good. (Autographed Letters & Documents, Americana) Duel 18th-Century Virginia Land-Office Treasury Warrants dated the 23rd of November 1781, Clough Overton. Partially-printed document with secretarial signature for John Harvie. Document numbers 8032 and 8033, each for the sale of one thousand acres of land in Virginia for the sum of 1,600 pounds. Signed and inscribed by Clough Overton and Jacob Myers on reverse of each document section in recognition of payment. One sheet, measures 13 x 8 inches. Original seals detached. Wear to folds. Ink faded in some places. Some toning and foxing. Damp-staining. Edge wear with some small tears and chips. Good condition. John Harvie, the American lawyer and builder from Virginia, was a delegate to the Second Continental Congress in 1777 and 1778, where he signed the Articles of Confederation. In 1780, he moved to Richmond, Virginia and began work as a land developer and builder. From 1785 to 1786, Harvie served as the fourth mayor of Richmond. From 1788 to 1789, he served as the Secretary of the Commonwealth of Virginia. In 1780, Kentucky County was dissolved and divided into three counties, but these counties were still part of Virginia. These land-office warrants granted Clough Overton [first cousin of Judge John Overton, founder of Overton County, Tennessee] 2,000 acres in one of the new counties. Less than a year after the documents were signed, Clough Overton died in the Battle of Blue Licks in Fayette Co., Virginia [in the area of modern day Robertson County, Kentucky] on August 19, 1782â€?"one of the last battles of the American Revolutionary War fought ten months after Lord Cornwallis's famous surrender at Yorktown. During the battle, a group of Kentucky militiamen led by Daniel Boone were ambushed and routed by a much larger force of Canadian and American Loyalists and American Indians.

Maritime School on the Banks of the Thames, for the Education of the Sons of such Sea Officers, and others, as may be intended for the King's, the East India Company's, or the Merchants Service [caption title]

[Chelsea, England?: no publisher. circa 1780s]. Small quarto pamphlet, approximately 6.75" x 3.5". 19, [1, blank] pp., A--B[4], C1--C[ 2]. Stitched, without wrappers, later (?) paper reinforcement strip to spine. First leaf slightly dust-soiled, very good. This pamphlet serves as a continuation of a proposal first made in1777 to establish at Chelsea a naval training school for young English boys. The school was the brainchild of English philanthropist andmerchant Jonas Hanway. The objectives of the school were to train young boys for the Royal Navy, and to ensure the children of fallenofficers who had died in serving their country could receive a naval education. The details of the institution and its benefits for King, country, and character are herein outlined. Pages 13--19 record a lengthy list of subscribers; many, quite obviously, with title, status, and notable standing. Not on ESTC, COPAC, or OCLC. A variant example, in seventeen pages, held by the National Maritime Museum in England, has a similar, but variant title, and suggests a date of 1781. We suspect NMM's example chronologically preceded this present example. Other Maritime School on the Banks of the Thames pamphlets are recorded, but not with this title's wording. Additionally, they often appear to post-date this present example which is apparently unrecorded. Of the other editions, not one mentions in the caption title that the school was intended for training individuals who would then serve with the East India Company. A curious anomaly? .

The Elements of Euclid, viz. The First Six books,

1781. EUCLID. The Elements of Euclid, viz. The First Six books, Together with the Eleventh and Twelfthe. In this Edition, the Errors, by which Theon, or others, have long ago Vitiated these Books, are Corrected, And some of Euclid's Demonstrations are Restored. By Robert Simson, M.D. Professor of Mathematics in the University of Glassgow. [8], 466, [2], 38 pp. Illustrated with 3 folding engraved plates, numerous woodcut text figs. 8vo., 205 x 130 mm, bound in contemporary English full calf, gilt-ruled spine, gilt- stamped red morocco spine label. Glasgow: Andrew Foulis, 1781.A handsome octavo version of The Elements of Euclid printed by the famous Glasgow University printers Robert (1707-76) and Andrew Foulis (1712-75) first issued in quarto in 1756. Best known for their simple yet elegant printings of carefully edited classics, this work is no exception. Dr. Robert Simson's corrections and additions to Theon and early editors in this edition were among the most important in clarifying Euclid's theorems. In addition, Simson's demonstrations were among the most clearly illustrated. Simple in-text woodcut diagrams appear next to the geometrical ideas they highlight in a harmonious mise en page. Some slight wear to the binding, still a fine crisp copy, and presumably one of the copies which Gaskell referes to as being printed on slightly better paper. PROVENANCE: Andras Gédéon with his ex-libris on front paste-down. In 2006 Gédéon published a book entitled: Science and Technology in Medicine: Based on Ninety-nine Landmark Publications form Five Centuries using his own library as source material.Gaskell 648.

Arrest de la cour du Parlement, qui fait défenses à toutes personnes de s'assembler ni de s'attrouper, sous quelque prétexte que ce puisse être, le jour de la Pentecôte, pour danser dans la place publique & boire dans les cabarets [...]

Extraordinary meeting of 120 judgments concerning essentially the rules of public life. Handwritten pagination and table of contents premettant consult the various pieces of this collection. Full marbled calf period. Back tooled raised, wheels and tail head. Part of title in red morocco. A lack in mind. Friction. A dull corner. Besides many regulations of public space, including the disruption of public order (drinks, games, music, gatherings ...) the obligations of hotels and inns; various judgments also apply to merchants, and some publications; we particularly distinguish a judgment condemning philosophical History of the Indies by Raynal to be slashed and burned. Very interesting set which tracks public life under Louis XVI, and many regulations pout all things such as the prohibition to kill calves for slaughter less than three weeks. Chez P. G.         The New British Traveller, The National Omnibus and General Advertiser

Alex Hogg, George Cowie 1781 - Two titles bound together at a later date. The first is The New British Traveler, or a complete modern universal display of Great Britain and Ireland printed for Alex Hogg at the Kings Arms, 16 Paternoster Row, undated but believed to be 1781. The other is a set of weekly publication from 1831-1833 entitled The National Omnibus and General Advertiser and subtitled A journal of literature, science, music, theatricals and fine arts. Each consists of about 6 sheets with adverts, reviews of books poems and articles printed in a 3 column format. There are a few small illustrations. 67 issues are present being # 14 dated 30 Sept 1831 to # 80 from 4th Jan 1833 (dated in error 4 Jan 1832). The year 1832 is complete. The the British Traveler is a work of 520pp and is extensively illustrated with upwards of 150 engravings of famous houses of the day, views of towns, county maps and prominent persons. As stated the book has been rebound probably around 1833. The current binding is poor with the front board completely removed and spine loose. The rear board is badly scuffed and damaged around the edges and is nearly detached. The British Traveler frontispiece has a tear across most of it's width which has a good quality repair probably done at the time of the rebind. Similar damage and repair applies to the title page. Internally there is age related browning and spotting but many of the illustrations are free of these marks. Generally the internals are very good for a book of this age. No original end papers are present. The National Omnibus copies are generally free of damage. 237x370x85mmHeavy book. Extra carriage will be require for delivery and insurance charges.

Riga, Hartknoch, 1781. 8vo. Very nice later (probably around 1920, signed "F. Dudik, Aachen) pastiche-binding of brown half calf with elaborate blindtooling and gild lettering to spine. A bit of wear to extremities, especially corners. A bit of soiling to inner blank margin of title-page. One tiny wormhole to blank margin of first four leaves. A very nice, clean, and fresh copy. (24), 856 pp.. Rare first edition of Kant's monumental main work, arguably the most important work in the history of philosophy since Aristotle. The "Critique of Pure Reason" took Kant about a decade to write, and the work is of the utmost scarcity. It is due to this work that Kant became world famous as one of the three or four greatest philosophers of all times, and the work fundamentally changed the face of philosophy. With this work philosophy is finally provided with a new and comprehensive way of dealing systematically with the problems of philosophy. "In 1770 Kant became professor of logic and metaphysics, and at this point there is a sudden falling off in number of his publications. The cause of this became clear eleven years later when "The Critique of Pure Reason" appeared; and with it Kant became famous. Kant's great achievement was to conclude finally the lines on which philosophical speculation had proceeded in the eighteenth century, and to open up a new and more comprehensive system of dealing with the problems of philosophy... The influence of Kant is paramount to the critical method of modern philosophy. No other thinker has been able to hold with such firmness the balance between speculative and empirical ideas. His penetrating analysis of the elements involved in synthesis, and the subjective process by which these elements are realized in the individual consciousness, demonstrated the operation of "pure reason", and the simplicity and cogency of his arguments achieved immediate fame."         A Letter from Mr. Christian Mayer... On the Going of a New Pendulum Clock, made by Mr. John Arnold

London: T. Becket, 1781. Quarto, 19 pp., final page advertisement for a work by John Arnold, a few spots; very good in neat modern paper boards with morocco spine label. Significant longitude publication. Very rare: one of very few publications to directly discuss the chronometers of John Arnold, and clearly published with his consent - and almost certainly with his involvement - this work was issued in very small numbers to puff the technical prowess of Arnold at a time when he was working on the revolution in chronometers that would culminate in "Arnold 36" of 1782, the first timepiece to actually be called a chronometer, and the forerunner of the viability of quantity production: by the mid-1780s 'Captains of the East India Company and the Royal Navy flocked to the chronometer factories' (Sobel, Longitude).Arnold (1736-1799) was the English watchmaker most responsible for making practical advances in the manufacture of chronometers. He had benefitted from the magnum opus of longitude, John Harrison's Principles of 1767, the publication of which was forced by Astronomer Royal Nevil Maskelyne, who first gave copies of the detailed plates to Larcum Kendall for the manufacture of K1, the chronometer taken on board Resolution for Cook's second voyage. Soon after, Maskelyne also gave a copy of Harrison's book to Arnold, who ultimately produced three chronometers which were also taken on board the Resolution. Kendall's was by far the superior timepiece, although Arnold's chances were not helped by the fact that one was allowed to go unwound (the fiery debate about whether this was the fault of William Wales helped fuel his acrimonious split with the Forsters).Arnold had a better business mind than Kendall, and was more aware of the practicalities of watch-design meaning that his "Arnold 36" of 1777 is considered the first modern chronometer. Arnold was also not only personally charming, but as this rare pamphlet neatly proves, a wonder at self-promotion. This work translates a laudatory essay by the German astronomer Christian Mayer, praising Arnold's work on a new pendulum clock at Manheim. The fact that this is in effect an extended advertisement is safely proven by the long translator's preface, which concludes triumphantly: 'While Mr. Arnold's improvements in clock-work may thus become serviceable to astronomers; that superior degree of perfection to which he had brought his Pocket Chronometers must be of the highest utility in geography and navigation... ships may now proceed on their voyages with a degree of certainty and expedition unhoped for and unknown to preceding navigators...'.
