Full leather with poor hinges, some wear to spine edges. Bookplate, owner's sig., foxing. Thomas Pennant's interest in natural history began at the age of 12 when he was given a copy of Francis Willoughby's 'Ornithology'. In 1755 he began a correspondence with Linnaeus, and was elected a member of the Royal Society of Upsala in 1757. He began 'British Zoology' in 1761, and pub. the first part in 1766. He gave the profits of this work to the Welsh school in London. Pennant made a tour of Scotland in 1769, and published a volume of his findings. He did the same for Wales. In 1781, he pub. his own favourite work, the 'History of Quadrupeds', a new and enlarged ed. of his 'Synopsis of Quadrupeds' which had been pub. in 1771. He followed this by publishing other journeys, incl. 'London', and 'Arctic Zoology'. From about 1777, he stayed closer to home, publishing many other works. Pennant's name stands high among the naturalists of the 18C, and he has been commmended for making dry and technical matter interesting. His 'British Zoology' and 'History of Quadrupeds', arranged according to the classification of John Ray, long remained classical works. (DNB). Benjamin White was the brother of Gilbert White (Natural History of Selbourne). B. White suggested to Pennant that his publishing firm should bring out a new edition of Pennant's British Zoology (first pub. in 1761). Through this connection Gilbet White met Pennant. Pennant was a highly talented zoologist, and a collector and sifter of information but not a field naturalist. After their meeting, Pennant made frequent use of White, asking him specifically to study a certain species and report on it to him or even gather specimens for the guidance of his illustrator. Subsequent ed's of British Zoology and also the History of Quadrupeds (1781) owe much to White's ready information. In return, his acquaintanceship with White contributed greatly to the Natural History of Selbourne. Selbourne was published in the form of letters to Pennant and Daines Barrington.
